What the three global alliances count in September 2026, what each status tier gets you at the gate, and how to pick the one that fits the routes you fly.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Star Alliance is the largest of the three: 26 member airlines reaching more than 1,150 airports across 190 countries. SkyTeam counts 18 members, oneworld carries 16. 1, 2, 3
  • oneworld publishes the clearest tier deal. Lounge access opens at Sapphire with 15 kg of extra checked baggage. Emerald adds first-class lounges, expedited security and 5 kg more baggage, 20 kg in total above your ticketed allowance. Ruby gets priority check-in and seating only. 4, 5
  • oneworld reached 16 members on 23 April 2026, when Hawaiian Airlines joined Alaska and American as its third carrier based in the United States. 2
  • SkyTeam spent 2025 shedding partners. Delta's own page records China Southern leaving its loyalty partnership on 10 August 2025 and ITA Airways on 1 September 2025. 3
  • Pick the alliance flying your regular routes, then earn in one program inside it. Status is granted by a single program's tier and travels across that program's alliance. 5, 3

Every figure on this page comes from an airline's or an alliance's own page, read on 28 September 2026, with its date attached. Star Alliance's and SkyTeam's own websites refused every request on 28 September 2026, so member airlines' pages carry those alliances' facts here. The Before you book list at the end of this page says exactly where each gap sits.

What an airline alliance actually gives you

Your boarding pass says one airline. Your account can say three. Two carriers, one booking, one bag tag, one pile of miles collecting the whole trip. That is an alliance doing its job, and three of them cover most of the world's long-haul map.

Star Alliance came first, established in 1997 as the first global airline alliance. oneworld launched on 1 February 1999. SkyTeam followed on 22 June 2000, three years behind Star. 1, 6, 7

Each one is an agreement between airlines that stay separately owned and keep their own loyalty programs. What the agreement buys you shows up in three places: where your miles count, what your status is worth at another airline's gate, and which door opens at the airport.

  • Earn across the group. oneworld's own wording: your points add up every time you book and fly with a member airline, and you book reward flights through your own airline's frequent flyer site. 5
  • Carry status across the group. Your home program's tier maps onto an alliance tier. Delta's Gold Medallion reads as SkyTeam Elite Plus at a partner airline's desk. 3
  • Collect the airport benefits. Lounges, priority boarding, extra baggage and faster security, in a mix that changes with the alliance and the tier you hold. 4

This page compares the three on what the airlines and the alliances publish about themselves, each figure carrying its date. MMT's airline loyalty hub holds the program cards; this page covers the alliance sitting behind each one.

Star Alliance vs oneworld vs SkyTeam: how do they compare?

Members, founding dates and network reach, read from the airlines' own pages on 28 September 2026.

Star Alliance leads on every headline number it publishes. Air Canada's own Star Alliance page puts the alliance at 26 member airlines reaching more than 1,150 airports across 190 countries, which it describes as 90% of the world. 1 10 airlines more than oneworld carries. 2

SkyTeam22 June 2000181,150 destinations in 175+ countries
oneworld1 February 199916900+ destinations in 170 territories

Star Alliance counts airports, SkyTeam and oneworld count destinations, so the two 1,150 figures measure different things. SkyTeam's page states 18 airlines while naming 16 partners beside Delta. oneworld's 16 excludes S7 Airlines, suspended since 19 April 2022, and counts more than 20 affiliate airlines separately.

Reach splits a different way. Delta's page counts 1,150 SkyTeam destinations in more than 175 countries against oneworld's 900-plus destinations in 170 territories, a gap of up to 250 destinations. 3, 8

Size decides the odds that a member airline flies the route you want. It says little about what waits for you once you get to the airport. That part lives in the tier tables below.

oneworld: 16 members and the clearest tier table

oneworld is the smallest of the three and the most exact about what each tier unlocks. Hawaiian Airlines joined on 23 April 2026 as the sixteenth member and the third based in the United States, beside Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. The same announcement counts more than 20 affiliate airlines behind those 16. 2

One name sits outside the count. S7 Airlines' membership has been suspended since 19 April 2022, and oneworld's members page still records it that way. 8

The network reaches more than 900 destinations in 170 territories. 8 Lounges are where oneworld puts its attention: nearly 700 of them by June 2025, up from more than 600 in February 2024, 16 months earlier. 9, 6

oneworld also makes a comparative claim about itself. Its 25th-anniversary release of 1 February 2024 calls it the only global alliance giving eligible customers access to First Class lounges whatever member airline they fly. 6 That is oneworld's own claim about itself, published on 1 February 2024.

Star Alliance: the widest map, with a February change to watch

Star Alliance has held the most airlines for the longest. Established in 1997, it unites 26 carriers reaching more than 1,150 airports. 1 The list runs from Lufthansa, United and Air Canada through Singapore Airlines, ANA, EVA Air and THAI, to Ethiopian Airlines, EGYPTAIR, Avianca and Copa Airlines. Juneyao Airlines flies alongside as a Star Alliance Connecting Partner, outside the 26. 1

Status arrives through your own program, as it does everywhere else. Air Canada's Aeroplan recognizes its 25K and 35K members as Star Alliance Silver across 25-plus airlines. On Air Canada's own flights, that status brings priority airport check-in, priority boarding and 2 complimentary checked bags of 23 kg each; specific perks at partner airlines vary, from Premier Access check-in and Group 2 boarding with United to Business Class priority check-in with Lufthansa Group. 10

For Star Alliance Gold benefits, open your own program's Star Alliance page; this page covers Silver, from Air Canada's Aeroplan. On Air Canada's own flights, that status brings priority airport check-in, priority boarding, 2 complimentary checked bags of 23 kg each, and Aeroplan's 2x Elite Points Multiplier for 25K members and above. 10

SkyTeam: a wide map with thinner airport benefits

SkyTeam is the youngest alliance and the one moving most. Four carriers founded it on 22 June 2000: Delta Air Lines, Air France, Aeromexico and Korean Air. 7 Delta's own SkyTeam page today describes 18 airlines serving over 175 countries and 1,150 destinations. 3

The count argues with itself. Delta's page names 16 partner carriers beside Delta, which totals 17 against the 18 it states, leaving 1 airline unnamed. 3 Take 18 as the alliance's own figure and keep the gap in view.

Delta frames these as changes to its own loyalty partnerships and lounge benefits, which travel with SkyTeam membership for most flyers but follow Delta's wording on the page. 3

One of those names has a second life. ITA Airways appears on Delta's page as a partnership that ended on 1 September 2025, and on Air Canada's list of the 26 Star Alliance member airlines. 3, 1 Airlines move between alliances, and the loyalty page you read last year may describe a different world.

The tier mapping is the simplest of the three. Delta's page maps Silver Medallion to SkyTeam Elite, and Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion to SkyTeam Elite Plus. 3

Lounges are the soft spot. A trade-press account read on 28 September 2026 describes reciprocal lounge access as complicated even at Elite Plus, while an extra checked bag arrives as low as base Elite. 7 Sources disagree on whether SkyTeam Elite or only Elite Plus opens a partner lounge, so no split is printed here. Ask your program or the lounge.

Which airline alliance is best for you?

The best alliance is the one flying out of your airport on the routes you repeat. Size comes second. A Star Alliance card is worth little at an airport where Delta and Air France hold the gates, and a full SkyTeam account is worth little where United owns the concourse.

  1. Write down your three regular routes

Home airport to the places you actually go, once a year or more. Include the trip you take for work and the one you take for family.

  2. Name the airlines that fly them

Then find the alliance behind each. Star Alliance carries 26 members, SkyTeam 18 and oneworld 16, so most large carriers sit inside one of the three. 1, 3, 2

  3. Check what your credit card transfers into

A card that moves points into one of those programs tips the whole decision. MMT's credit card points guide lists the transfer partners.

  4. Pick one program and earn in it

Status comes from a single program's tier and then travels across that program's alliance. Spread your flying over three and you reach a useful tier in none of them. 5, 3

  5. Price one real redemption before you commit

Work out what the seat is worth after taxes and fees with MMT's points versus cash calculation.

How do you earn and use miles across an alliance?

You earn in one program and you redeem in one program. oneworld puts it plainly: your points add up every time you book and fly with a member airline, and you visit your own airline's frequent flyer site to book the reward flight. 5 The alliance widens where you can earn. Your home program still holds the account.

Some programs pay extra for staying inside the alliance. Air Canada's Aeroplan gives 25K members and above 1 extra Elite Point per dollar, what Aeroplan calls its 2x Elite Points Multiplier, on Air Canada flights and on Star Alliance partner flights booked with Air Canada. 10 That is Air Canada's own offer on its own bookings, an example of the mechanic instead of an alliance-wide rule.

Status recognition travels the same road. A top tier in any oneworld member's own program lands you at Emerald across the alliance, and Delta's Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion tiers all land at SkyTeam Elite Plus. 5, 3 The card in your wallet stays the same; the gate agent reads the alliance tier behind it.

What should you check before you book?

Alliance membership and award rules move, and the last two years moved them hard. Delta's page records two loyalty partnerships ending in 2025 and one airline ceasing operations in October 2024, while oneworld added a member in April 2026. 3, 2 Treat every figure as dated, including the ones here.

  • Your own program's alliance page, for the tier you hold this month and the benefits attached to it. 4
  • The checked baggage allowance on the airline actually operating the flight. oneworld's extra allowance runs 20 kg at Emerald and 15 kg at Sapphire on weight-system itineraries. 5
  • Whether the lounge you are counting on admits your tier on that itinerary. Priority baggage handling already carries an exception for British Airways-operated flights. 5
  • Air Canada's Aeroplan baggage benefit, which its own page flags as changing in February 2026. 10
  • Your card's transfer partners at MMT's credit card points hub, before you move points anywhere.
  • Which alliance an airline belongs to today. ITA Airways shows how quickly that answer changes. 1, 3

One program, one alliance, one year of flying it. That is how a loyalty account turns into a seat.

Frequently asked questions

Which airline alliance has the most member airlines?

Star Alliance, with 26 member airlines against SkyTeam's 18 and oneworld's 16. For a US hub, that split tracks the big three US carriers: United sits inside Star Alliance, Delta inside SkyTeam, and American inside oneworld, so most large-airport route coverage in the country already sits inside one of the three. 1, 3, 2

Can I earn miles from one alliance airline in another airline's program?

Yes, inside the alliance. oneworld's own description is that your points add up every time you book and fly with a member airline, and you redeem through your own airline's frequent flyer site. Air Canada's Aeroplan goes further for its own members, adding 1 extra point per dollar on Star Alliance partner flights booked with Air Canada. 5, 10

What status do I need for a lounge on a oneworld flight?

Sapphire opens business-class lounges, and Emerald adds first-class lounges plus expedited security and first-class check-in. Ruby gets business-class priority check-in, preferred seating and waitlist priority, with no lounge attached. American Airlines publishes the full table on its own oneworld page. 4

How much extra baggage does alliance status carry?

oneworld adds 20 kg above your ticketed cabin allowance at Emerald and 15 kg at Sapphire on weight-system itineraries, a difference of 5 kg, with one extra free bag at Emerald on piece-system itineraries. Air Canada gives Star Alliance Silver members 2 complimentary 23 kg bags on its own flights, and flags a change for February 2026. 5, 10

Is Hawaiian Airlines in an airline alliance?

Yes, since 23 April 2026, when Hawaiian became oneworld's sixteenth member and its third carrier based in the United States, alongside Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. The same announcement counts more than 20 affiliate airlines standing behind those 16 full members. 2

Why do SkyTeam member counts differ from one page to the next?

Because Delta's own count and Delta's own name list don't match: the page states 18 airlines but names only 16 partner carriers beside Delta, a gap of 1 unnamed airline (the 16 appear in full above). Membership keeps moving too, which widens gaps like this one: China Southern's loyalty partnership ended on 10 August 2025 and ITA Airways' on 1 September 2025. 3

Which alliance has the best lounge access?

oneworld claims to be the only global alliance giving eligible customers first-class lounge access whatever member airline they fly. A trade-press account describes SkyTeam's reciprocal lounge access as complicated even at Elite Plus. Star Alliance Gold is not covered on this page. 6, 7

Is S7 Airlines still a oneworld member?

No. S7 Airlines' oneworld membership has been suspended since 19 April 2022 with no return date set, so it sits outside both the 16 full members and the network's more than 20 affiliate airlines. 8
