Is airline status worth it if you fly a few times a year?

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

The September 2026 bag fees at American, Delta, United and Southwest, the cheapest bottom rung in each program, and the status-match shortcut that skips most of it.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Four round trips a year with one checked bag each way costs $360 in fees: 8 bags at the $45 prepaid price now charged by American, Delta, United and Southwest alike. That is the number any status has to beat. 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Southwest stopped being the free-bag exception. For tickets bought on or after 18 April 2026 its Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred fares pay $45 for a first bag and $55 for a second, matching the other three carriers. 4
  • Delta's Silver is the cheapest entry tier in plain dollars: $5,000 of fare spend, and it waives baggage fees like every tier above it. One eligible SkyMiles Amex card deposits $2,500 of that before you fly. 5, 2
  • United's waiver is the widest: the Premier member and up to nine other travelers on the same itinerary check bags free, so a household of four needs one membership. 3
  • Status you already hold is worth a free match: 4 months at American, 90 days at Delta, 120 days at United. Delta's extension then asks $1,250 MQDs instead of $5,000. 6, 7, 8, 5

The bag bill is the whole question

You are at the kiosk with one roller bag and a boarding pass. The screen wants $45 to check it. On the way home it wants $45 again. Four round trips a year and the airline has collected $360 for carrying the same suitcase eight times. 1, 2, 3, 4

Elite status erases that line. It also brings priority boarding, a shorter security queue at some airports and, high enough up, the lounge in the photograph above. For a person who flies a few times a year, the bag is the part with a dollar figure on it, so the bag is where this decision starts.

One change in 2026 reshaped the arithmetic. Southwest, the airline that built its brand on free bags, now charges $45 for a first checked bag and $55 for a second on Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred fares ticketed on or after 18 April 2026. 4 All four big US carriers charge the same first-bag price today.

So the bag benefit is worth roughly the same wherever you earn it, and the real comparison is what each program asks of you. Every figure below comes from the airline's or the alliance's own page, read on 28 September 2026, with two exceptions named in the confirm box. The program cards sit on MMT's airline loyalty hub.

How much does elite status save on baggage?

Four programs, one benefit, and the fee it cancels. Prices are the airlines' own, read on 28 September 2026.

Delta hands the bag waiver out at the bottom rung; American builds it into a ladder. Every Delta Medallion tier waives baggage fees, Silver included. 5 American gives one free bag at Gold, two at Platinum, three at Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum. 9 Southwest gives A-List one bag and A-List Preferred two. 10, 11 United covers the member and up to nine companions. 3

American's fees cover travel inside the US and to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and Guyana, as printed on its page on 18 May 2026; Basic Economy adds $5 a bag, so $50 online for the first. Delta's prices are per bag under 50 lb, each way. United's $10 increase applies to tickets bought on or after 3 April 2026. Southwest's fees apply to Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred fares ticketed from 18 April 2026; its Choice Extra fare keeps two bags.

The orange bar is the one to hold in your head. Four round trips with one checked bag each way is 8 bags at $45, or $360 a year, and that is the figure any status has to beat. Source: 1, 2, 3, 4

Two travelers double it, and that is where the programs stop being interchangeable. Sixteen first bags at $45 is $720. United's own baggage page extends the waiver to the Premier member and up to nine others on the same itinerary. 3 On the other three, count the member's bags only. 9, 5, 10

There is a cheaper version of this whole exercise: skip the checked bag. MMT's carry-on size limits on budget airlines has the measurements that decide whether a bag goes in the cabin or under the plane.

What does the bottom rung of each program cost?

Delta's Silver is the cheapest entry tier stated in plain dollars. Delta counts one Medallion Qualification Dollar per dollar of fare on its own flights, so Silver is $5,000 of tickets. 5 American asks for 40,000 Loyalty Points for Gold, counted over the year that starts each 1 March. 9

United wants 15 flights plus 5,000 Premier Qualifying Points for Silver, or 6,000 PQP with no flight count, and at least four United flights on either route. 13 Southwest wants 20 qualifying one-way flights, which is 10 round trips, or 35,000 tier qualifying points in a calendar year. 10

Southwest Rapid RewardsA-List20 one-way flights, or 35,000 tier qualifying pointsA-List Preferred at 40 flights or 70,000 points

Delta's MQDs exclude ancillary fees, Sky Club membership and Basic Economy tickets. United's PQP-only route to Silver is 6,000 PQP, and its published table covers 2026 and 2027; the PQP-only path to 1K is 28,000.

One ratio settles most of these decisions. Delta Silver saves the four-trip flyer $360 of bag fees and takes $5,000 of Delta fares to reach. Divide $5,000 by $360 and every dollar of bag saving needs about $13.89 of ticket spending. 5, 2

Is status worth it for four trips a year?

Your year, four ways, priced at the September 2026 fees.

Put your own trips in the left column and the answer stops being a matter of taste. The count of first and second bags does the work. The only other question is who else is on the ticket.

What entry-tier status is worth by party and bag count, at the $45 and $55 prepaid fees of 28 September 2026 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 5, 10, 11
Your yearBags you pay forFees, USDWhat the entry tier covers

4 round trips, 2 travelers, 1 bag each16 first bags$720United Premier Silver covers the companion; the others cover the member

Arithmetic on the prepaid fees: 4 bags at $45 is $180, 8 at $45 is $360, 8 at $45 plus 8 at $55 is $800, and 16 at $45 is $720. American's and United's airport prices add $5 a bag, and American's Basic Economy adds $5 more. Southwest's A-List covers one bag, A-List Preferred two.

$720 is the row that changes plans. Two people, four round trips, one bag each: 16 bags at $45. United is the only one of the four whose own page carries the waiver across to companions, up to nine on the same itinerary. 3 For a family that flies together, one Premier Silver membership does the work of four.

The $800 row is the other one worth a look. Second bags cost $55 each, so a traveler who checks two on every leg pays more in bag fees alone than the four-trip single-bag flyer pays for bags all year. 1, 2 Delta Silver and Southwest A-List Preferred are the entry tiers that cover both. 5, 11

  • Count bags, not trips. Eight first bags at $45 is $360 whether they ride on four round trips or eight one-ways. 1
  • Prepay every time. American and United charge $50 for a first bag at the airport against $45 online, so 8 bags bought at the counter costs $40 more across the year. 1, 12
  • Watch the fare class. American's Basic Economy adds $5 a bag on top, which turns a prepaid first bag into $50. All AAdvantage status members get their bags regardless of fare. 1
  • Price the alternative honestly. $360 of bag fees against the points you already hold is a real comparison, and MMT's travel points vs cash worksheet runs it after taxes and fees.

What is a status match, and does it help an occasional flyer?

The one path here that hands you the tier before you earn it. American asks for no flight at all; United wants one to start the clock.

Three of the four programs will hand you their status free when you already hold it somewhere else. That is a status match. American gives four months, Delta gives 90 days, United gives 120 days after an activating flight. 6, 7, 8 Then the clock runs out, and each program asks for some flying to keep it.

Status-match offers read on each program's own pages, 28 September 2026 6, 7, 8

United, Premier Status Match Challenge120 days after the activating flightA long list of partner and competitor programsPQF and PQP earned inside the challenge window

Delta's match tops out at Platinum, with no Diamond match offered. It asks for a SkyMiles account at least 30 days old and one prior non-Basic Delta flight in the last three years, allows one enrollment every three years, and a challenge completed in 2026 holds status to 31 January 2028. United's 2026 applications run 8 January to 21 December. American matches Southwest A-List to Gold and A-List Preferred to Platinum; JetBlue Mosaic 1 and 2 match to Gold and Platinum; Mosaic 3 and 4 both match to Platinum Pro; none of JetBlue's tiers reach Executive Platinum.

Delta's extension is the cheapest number on this page. Silver normally takes $5,000 MQDs. Through the challenge it takes $1,250, a quarter of the standard threshold, plus one Delta flight. 5, 7 For someone holding status earned in a heavier year, one trip can carry a whole year of free bags.

  1. Check what you already hold

Old status counts. American matches from Southwest, JetBlue, Delta and United; Delta's list includes American, United and Alaska; United's list runs long. 6, 7, 8

  2. Apply before you book the trip

United's 2026 window closes on 21 December and the 120 days start after an activating flight, so the application comes first and the ticket second. 8

  3. Put the free window on a real trip

Ninety days at Delta covers one holiday round trip and the bags on it. 7, 2 Book inside the window so the match earns its keep.

  4. Decide at the end, with numbers

By then you know the bags you checked and the fares you bought. Delta asks $1,250 MQDs to extend Silver, against $5,000 from a standing start. 7, 5

Do the benefits follow you onto other airlines?

Mid-tier status travels, and abroad it arrives as kilograms. oneworld Sapphire, the tier American Platinum maps to, adds 15 kg to the ticketed economy allowance on weight-based itineraries, or a guaranteed extra piece where the fare counts pieces. 14, 9

oneworld Emerald, the tier American Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum both map to, adds 20 kg on weight-based itineraries or one extra bag free on piece-based ones. 14, 9 Both apply on any oneworld carrier, so a single American tier buys allowance on Qatar Airways, British Airways or Japan Airlines the same way it does at home.

Delta's tiers map onto SkyTeam on the same principle. Silver becomes SkyTeam Elite, and Gold, Platinum and Diamond become Elite Plus, each carrying an extra baggage allowance in weight or pieces on any SkyTeam airline. Delta's page confirms the extra allowance; SkyTeam publishes the kilograms and pieces on its own benefits table. 15

  • The allowance is the part that travels. oneworld Sapphire's 15 kg applies across the alliance, not only on American metal. 14
  • The lounge sometimes arrives by card. American's own status-match page markets the Citi/AAdvantage Globe Mastercard with four Admirals Club passes a calendar year, which is how plenty of occasional flyers get through that door. 6
  • Star Alliance sets United's partner allowance, and publishes it itself. Ask United or the Star Alliance carrier you are flying for the current extra-bag figure before you check in.

Can a credit card buy the status outright?

Delta comes closest by a wide margin. One eligible SkyMiles American Express card deposits $2,500 MQDs a Medallion year, half of Silver's $5,000 threshold, before the flyer boards anything. 5 Four deposits are the annual maximum across all eligible cards, and 4 times $2,500 is $10,000, which is exactly Gold. 5

United's card route is a much longer road. The United Club Card and United Club Business Card earn 1 PQP per $15 spent, and other United cards 1 per $20. 16 Premier Silver on the PQP-only path takes 6,000 PQP, so $90,000 of card spending at the better rate, or $120,000 at the other. 13, 16

That same status-match page markets the Citi/AAdvantage Globe Mastercard, worth up to 15,000 extra Loyalty Points after qualifying flight activity, against the 40,000 Gold needs. 6, 9 The card shortens the run. The flying still opens the door. Annual fees belong in the comparison too, and MMT's credit card points and transfer partners page sets them against what the points actually do.

How do you decide in ten minutes?

Count the bags, then the party, then the threshold. The airline is the last variable, because the bag fee is now the same $45 at all four.

  1. Count the checked bags you will pay for

One bag each way across four round trips is 8 bags. At $45 prepaid that is $360 a year; bought at an American or United counter at $50 it is $400. 1, 12

  2. Count the people on your itineraries

United's waiver reaches the Premier member and up to nine others on the same booking, so a household qualifies once. 3 On American, Delta and Southwest, count the member's own bags. 9, 5, 10

  3. Look up the threshold in money you already spend

Delta Silver is $5,000 of fares at $1 MQD per $1. 5 Southwest A-List is 20 one-way flights, which is 10 round trips. 10 If your real year clears one of those, the status costs you nothing.

  4. Ask for a match before you chase a tier

Status you hold elsewhere is worth 4 months at American, 90 days at Delta and 120 days at United at no charge. 6, 7, 8 Apply, fly once, then decide with the receipts in front of you.

  5. Price the version with no checked bag

Eight fewer bags is $360 back. Run the year against a cabin-only trip with MMT's one-bag travel guide before you commit to a program.

For the flyer with four trips and one suitcase, the honest answer is narrow. Status is worth chasing when the flying is already on the calendar, when someone else travels on your ticket, or when another airline owes you a match. Outside those three, $360 is cheaper than $5,000.

Frequently asked questions

Is airline elite status worth it if I fly four times a year?

It is worth it when the flying is already booked. Four round trips with one checked bag each way is 8 bags at $45, or $360 of fees that entry-tier status removes at any of the four programs. 1, 2, 4 Reaching Delta Silver from a standing start takes $5,000 of fares, so about $13.89 of ticket spending per dollar of bag saving. 5 Buying flights you had no plan to take loses that trade.

How much does elite status save on checked bags in 2026?

The first checked bag is $45 prepaid at American, Delta, United and Southwest, and the second is $55. 1, 2, 3, 4 American and United charge $5 more per bag at the airport, and American's Basic Economy adds another $5. 1, 12 Delta waives bag fees at every Medallion tier; American covers 1 bag at Gold and 2 at Platinum; Southwest covers 1 at A-List and 2 at A-List Preferred. 5, 9, 10, 11

Can I get a status match without flying first?

American's Instant Status Pass grants four matched months from Southwest, JetBlue, Delta or United status, and Delta's challenge grants 90 complimentary days. 6, 7 United's 120 days begin after an activating flight, and its 2026 applications run from 8 January to 21 December. 8 Every one of them then asks for flying or spending to carry the status past the free window.

Which program's entry tier is easiest to reach?

In plain dollars, Delta's Silver at $5,000 MQDs, earned at $1 per $1 of fare, and an eligible SkyMiles Amex card deposits $2,500 of it. 5 United's Silver is 15 flights plus 5,000 PQP or 6,000 PQP alone, with 4 United flights minimum. 13 American's Gold is 40,000 Loyalty Points. 9 Southwest's A-List is 20 one-way flights, which is 10 round trips, or 35,000 tier qualifying points. 10

Can a credit card get me elite status?

Partly, and only on Delta at a sensible scale. Eligible SkyMiles Platinum, Platinum Business, Reserve and Reserve Business Amex cards deposit $2,500 MQDs each per Medallion year, up to four deposits, which is $10,000 and Gold's threshold. 5 United's card route is far longer: 6,000 PQP for Silver at 1 PQP per $15 means $90,000 of spending. 13, 16

Does my status cover the people traveling with me?

On United, yes. Its baggage page says the Premier member and up to nine others on the same itinerary check bags free, and Premier members also get a 70 lb per-bag weight allowance. 3 American's, Delta's and Southwest's own pages describe the free-bag benefit for the member, so a second traveler pays. Two people on four round trips with one bag each is 16 bags at $45, or $720. 9, 5, 10

Do I get extra baggage on partner airlines?

American Gold does not reach a oneworld tier; Platinum is the first that maps to Sapphire, and Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum both map to Emerald. Delta Silver maps to SkyTeam Elite, and Gold, Platinum and Diamond map to SkyTeam Elite Plus. 9, 15 Star Alliance publishes United's partner allowance on its own site; ask United or your Star Alliance carrier for today's figure.

Does Southwest still fly bags free?

Only with status or the right fare. Basic, Choice and Choice Preferred fares ticketed on or after 18 April 2026 pay $45 for a first bag and $55 for a second, up from the $35 and $45 charged for tickets through 17 April 2026. 4 Choice Extra fares, A-List Preferred members and Rapid Rewards cardmembers keep free bags, with A-List and cardmembers getting the first bag and A-List Preferred both. 4, 10, 11
