Argentina travel guide

Build a Buenos Aires and Patagonia trip with room for art, glacier views and a spare day when the mountains ask you to wait.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Allow 13 nights for the suggested Buenos Aires, El Calafate and El Chaltén route. Keep the final Buenos Aires night between Patagonia and your flight home.
  • Check entry with the Argentine consulate for your passport, and arrange health insurance before departure. The current law requires an entry declaration that includes insurance. 1
  • Use pesos to compare prices and your settled card statement to check conversion. A published exchange-rate mechanism is only part of the cost. 2
  • Put park entry, buses and any guided activity on separate budget lines. At Los Glaciares, an admission ticket buys access; plan your transport around it.
  • For May through September hiking at El Chaltén, plan around mandatory registration and winter equipment rules. 3, 4

Under the metal arches and glass roof of Mercado San Telmo, Buenos Aires gives you a good reason to leave the morning loose. Start with the city, then head south for glacier views and mountain trails. This guide joins those days into a 13-night route, with places to start your lodging search, dated costs and a shorter option for a week. 5

The practical thread runs from your airport arrival through El Calafate to El Chaltén and back. Jujuy is a separate northwest choice for a different trip. Prices and rules were checked on 28 September 2026; each price keeps its currency and conditions. Use the route as a starting plan, then choose the walking days and city stops that matter most to you.

How long do you need for Buenos Aires and Patagonia?

Give the walking part of the trip room to breathe. Our suggested route uses 4 nights in Buenos Aires before the flight south, 2 in El Calafate, 5 in El Chaltén, then a night in each gateway on the way home. Those final stops make the return less brittle. A bus delay should cost an evening, not your long-haul ticket.

Book the international journey and the domestic flight as one planning exercise. Write down each airport, date and baggage allowance before you commit. An attractive fare loses some appeal when it forces an extra transfer or an overnight you left out of the room budget. Treat the first and last days as travel days until the actual flight times prove otherwise.

For a week, keep Buenos Aires and El Calafate. For committed hikers, keep Buenos Aires brief and spend more of the trip in El Chaltén. Trying to give every stop equal time makes little sense when the main thing you want is several full days outside. Choose the version that protects your reason for coming.

The longer plan below puts the glacier visit before the hiking stay. You can reverse that order if the transport works better, but retain a buffer before leaving the south. Use the El Chaltén hiking budget to work through that part of the trip, then return here to join the stops together.

ROUTESuggested first trip: city, glacier and trails13 nights
  1. 01
    Buenos Aires4 nights

Settle in, arrange a city walk and leave separate time for art and a long meal. Four nights let you move a museum visit without turning each morning into a rush.

→ Fly to El Calafate; verify the Buenos Aires departure airport.
  2. 02
    El Calafate2 nights

Use one full day for the Perito Moreno Glacier area. Keep the arrival evening for checking the next day’s transport and collecting food for the outing.

→ Reserved bus to El Chaltén.
  3. 03
    El Chaltén5 nights

Choose your main walk after the local briefing. Keep a second walking option and a rest day, with spare time to change the order as conditions dictate.

→ Reserved bus back to El Calafate.
  4. 04
    El Calafate1 night

Sleep here before the flight north so the intercity bus and airport check-in are on separate days.

    → Flight to Buenos Aires.
  5. 05
    Buenos Aires1 night

Keep this night as a buffer before the international journey. A relaxed final dinner is a good use of it if all goes to plan.

→ Transfer to the airport named on your international ticket.

With less time: With fewer nights, remove a destination before trimming every stay. A 7-night version is 3 nights Buenos Aires, 3 El Calafate and 1 Buenos Aires; leave El Chaltén for a trip with more walking time.

ROUTEShorter option: Buenos Aires and the glacier7 nights
  1. 01
    Buenos Aires3 nights

Use your first full days for a city walk and the museum or theatre visit you most want. Keep arrival day free of fixed bookings.

    → Flight to El Calafate.
  2. 02
    El Calafate3 nights

Keep one day for the glacier area and one open day. Staying in one southern base lets you unpack and avoids adding two intercity bus legs to a short trip.

→ Flight back to Buenos Aires.
  3. 03
    Buenos Aires1 night

Sleep in the city before the flight home, with the airport transfer arranged for the correct departure terminal.

    → International departure.

With less time: If you have fewer nights, favour Buenos Aires alone and save southern Patagonia for a longer visit.

Do you need a visa or health insurance for Argentina?

Start with your passport and purpose of travel. Argentina’s migration authority describes tourist admission as up to 3 months, extendable for a similar period. Tourist status excludes paid work. Check the permission you actually receive on arrival before fixing a departure near the limit. 6

The Argentine embassy in the United States says US passport holders visiting for tourism or business for no more than 90 days need neither a visa nor a reciprocity payment. For another passport, use the Argentine consulate responsible for your application. A rule for a travel companion’s nationality tells you little about your own case. 7

Where a tourist visa is required, the passport needs 6 months’ validity from entry and one blank leaf (two sides). Provide funds evidence, a round-trip reservation, a hotel reservation and a tourist itinerary, and attend an interview. Without a hotel reservation, an invitation from a private individual requires the specified invitation letter; the itinerary remains required. The consular fee is USD or EUR 150, paid in local currency as the consulate directs. 13

As checked on 28 September 2026, article 34 of the migration law requires an entry declaration stating your purpose and that you have health insurance for medical needs. Carry the policy and emergency contact details offline. Check the accepted proof with your carrier and Argentine consulate before departure. 1

Read the activities section of the policy before you pick a trail or book an excursion. Make a short list of what you intend to do and compare it with the cover, exclusions and excess. Keep the answer with your booking records so a change of route prompts a fresh check. This is especially useful when the trip mixes city days with guided outdoor activities.

What should you do on arrival in Buenos Aires?

Read the airport code before arranging the transfer. Tienda León’s offers connect Ezeiza and Aeroparque with Terminal Pellegrini, and also connect the two airports. Its city terminal is at Carlos Pellegrini 971, Retiro. Save that exact address; a terminal name and a neighbourhood name are different levels of detail. 8, 14

The web fares below were displayed on 28 September 2026. They are one-way seats per person, with the named endpoints. Check the next departure and final payable total before purchase, including baggage and change terms. Price the final leg from Terminal Pellegrini to your accommodation as well. 8

If your onward flight uses the other airport, compare a protected connection with a night in the city before choosing a tight transfer. Count passport control, bags, finding the pickup, road travel and a second check-in. The bus journey alone is only one part of that chain. On separate tickets, favour a plan you can still use after a late arrival.

  1. Before leaving arrivals

Save your lodging address and check-in instructions in a form you can show without internet. Confirm the exact pickup point on your transfer booking. Keep your passport and wallet accessible without opening your main bag in the queue.

  2. Take the booked transfer

Match the vehicle or counter to the operator on your receipt and confirm the destination before boarding. For a terminal bus, keep the last leg to your lodging ready too. Arriving at the city terminal should leave you with a clear next step.

  3. Drop bags and get connected

Personal requires a branch visit to activate a prepaid line with a foreign document; its online process is for Argentine documents. Bring your passport and test data before leaving the branch. Minors cannot activate a line under the published process. 11

  4. Make the first afternoon small

Walk the blocks around your accommodation, get food and test one modest card purchase. Save the receipt for comparison with the settled charge. Leave the first paid attraction for a time when a delayed flight will no longer threaten the booking.

Where should you stay?

Choose a base by the days you want to spend. Start your Buenos Aires search in Palermo, Recoleta or San Telmo. The city tourism office treats them as distinct neighbourhoods; Recoleta’s palaces and gardens offer one clear thread for a walking day. Pick one base for the initial city stay so you can unpack and learn the surrounding streets. 15

For a Palermo search, use Plaza Italia as a transport anchor. The station is on Avenida Santa Fe on subway line D. Look at the actual walk between a prospective room and the station, then compare that address with your evening plans. A listing that merely says Palermo still leaves a lot to decide. 16

For El Calafate, start along Avenida del Libertador General San Martín and adjacent central streets. The municipal tourism listing describes this as the main commercial street, with restaurants and travel agencies. For El Chaltén, start with Avenida San Martín and Avenida Lago del Desierto, both represented in the municipal hotel directory. 17, 18

Compare the total for your exact nights and party size. A room, a bed in a shared room and an apartment with a cleaning charge answer different needs. Put breakfast, kitchen access and luggage storage beside the price. For the hiking stay, space to dry clothes and an early breakfast arrangement can matter more than an elaborate lobby.

Think through the first and last hour of each stay. An apartment that needs a precise key handover works poorly with a late, uncertain arrival unless the host has a clear backup. A room with a staffed desk can make that day simpler. For an early departure, settle any remaining bill the evening before and keep the pickup address in your notes.

If step-free access matters, request details for the route from the street to the room, including lifts, door widths and the bathroom. A single accessibility label leaves too many practical points unanswered. Make the same check for the transfer vehicle. Base your choice on the parts of the journey you will actually use.

MMT area suggestions. Obtain dated quotes for your room type, occupancy, taxes and cancellation terms.

How should you pay without guessing the exchange rate?

Compare the amount you actually pay. The central bank describes a financial-market-linked mechanism for purchases with foreign-issued cards. That framework explains why a visitor’s result can differ from a headline rate. Your issuer’s fees and settlement still determine the cost on your statement. 2

Make a small purchase first. Write down the peso charge, the final amount in your home currency and any separate fee. Divide the pesos by that final amount to see the effective rate for that transaction. Use that result to understand your card, then repeat the check after a larger purchase. Keep a refund on your list until both the merchant and issuer show it as complete.

A foreign QR wallet needs its own check. The central bank’s tourist-wallet arrangement depends on agreements between foreign and local wallet administrators. A QR code at the counter alone tells you nothing about whether your wallet participates. Verify support in your wallet before relying on it for a meal or a bus ticket. 19

Use a simple trip worksheet in pesos: rooms, flights, airport transfers, intercity buses, park access, activities and food. Enter actual quotes as you receive them, with the payment currency and due date. This catches a common planning problem: a cheap flight or room can look attractive while the extra transfers it requires sit outside the comparison.

Keep enough accessible money for the next stage of travel, and separate your backup card from the one you use each day. Save your issuer’s lost-card contact before leaving home. For a shared trip, decide who pays each reservation and keep receipts in one agreed place; the person who booked the room should not have to reconstruct every expense at the end.

For cross-border cash, ARCA lists amounts below USD 10,000 equivalent as within the adult allowance and a USD 5,000 threshold for under-16s. Larger incoming sums require customs handling; outgoing amounts above the allowance must use bank transfer. Check the exact threshold procedure with customs if carrying anything near it. 20

  • Before paying for accommodation, record the quoted currency, taxes, deposit and balance due. Keep the cancellation deadline beside them.
  • For a card purchase, retain the peso receipt and compare it with the settled charge, including issuer fees.
  • Before an excursion, split out admission, guide, transport, equipment and food. A short description such as full day leaves those items unresolved.

How do you get around Buenos Aires?

Buy the card and the travel credit as separate items. A physical SUBE card was listed at ARS 1,500 when checked on 28 September 2026. It is used for buses, trains and the subway. Add credit for travel after buying it. 9

Registration is worth sorting out early. SUBE lists service centres as a registration channel with identity documentation. If the online form will not accept your document, take it to a centre and ask staff to check the process. The Retiro station desk is at Avenida Dr. José María Ramos Mejía 1430; published hours are weekdays 08:00-18:00. 21, 22

The September 2026 subway schedule prices the first 20 monthly rides at ARS 1,753 each with registered SUBE and ARS 2,541.10 with an unregistered card. The city also lists marked gates accepting bank cards, prepaid cards, NFC and QR at every station. Check the fare for your chosen payment method; the two SUBE prices below apply specifically to SUBE. 23

For buses, keep the system and distance band attached to the fare. The national table below covers interjurisdictional AMBA routes, not every bus within Buenos Aires. The train figures are by fare section. Use the trip you intend to take to choose the correct row, instead of treating the lowest number as a citywide flat fare. 24

For a first city day, group your plans around one area and make one transport journey at a time. Save the destination address before entering the station. On the return, check direction as well as the line. If you are tired, carrying bags or travelling late, compare a direct booked ride with the effort of several changes.

Make room for art and a long lunch

Give one paid visit the centre of the day. Teatro Colón’s guided route takes in the foyer, Bust Gallery, Golden Hall and main auditorium, with changes possible for theatre operations. The published visit lasts 50 minutes. On 28 September 2026, the general ticket was ARS 34,000; the Argentine-resident ticket with DNI was ARS 17,000. A performance needs its own booking. 25

For MALBA, choosing Wednesday changes the price of the same admission: collection plus temporary exhibitions, with cinema separate. The regular general ticket was ARS 14,000 and Wednesday ARS 7,000 on 28 September 2026. Tuesday is closed. The chart compares one person’s general admission, with the day of visit as the difference. 26

For a separate San Telmo morning, begin at Mercado San Telmo on Defensa and Carlos Calvo, then walk along Defensa to Plaza Dorrego. On Sundays, the square hosts the San Telmo fair; the surrounding buildings house cafés and antique shops. Leave this walk untimed so you can stop where something interests you. 5, 27

For a meal with a published price, Siga La Vaca at Alicia Moreau de Justo 1714 in Puerto Madero lists a weekday lunch at ARS 57,900 from 1 September 2026. It includes unlimited grill, cold dishes and salads, one listed drink choice and one dessert. The drink choices include beer, soft drink, water or a bottle of house wine. 28

The same provider lists Monday-Thursday dinner at ARS 59,900 and Friday night, weekends, holidays and holiday eves at ARS 63,900. Christmas and New Year are excluded. Taxes and tips are not separately described on the displayed menu; confirm the final bill and any dietary needs before booking. 28

How do you travel between El Calafate and El Chaltén?

Use El Calafate as the flight gateway and El Chaltén as the walking base. APN lists Comandante Armando Tola airport, buses between the towns and RP11 for the glacier approach. 10

Koon Calafate displayed an El Calafate-to-El Chaltén seat at ARS 60,000 on 28 September 2026, plus an excluded mandatory ARS 2,000 terminal-use fee. Its page lists a 17:00 departure and 17:30 airport pickup, with confirmation required before booking. The same published fare applies in the reverse direction. 29

If landing in El Calafate before travelling to El Chaltén, make a deliberate choice between a confirmed airport pickup and a night in town. The pickup saves a backtrack only when your flight timing and the bus conditions fit. A reserved bed in El Calafate is the simpler fallback when the afternoon connection looks tight.

Book the return leg at the same time you settle the outward journey. Keep the bus confirmation, boarding point and luggage allowance with the flight record. For a party travelling together, compare the group’s total bus cost with a quoted private transfer, then judge the pickup flexibility and cancellation terms. The cheapest seat price alone cannot answer that comparison.

For the glacier area, APN lists buses, remises and organised excursions from El Calafate, plus accessible walkway alternatives. Choose your outing before its transfer. 3

Keep the transport day light. After reaching El Chaltén, use your remaining time to check the local briefing, buy supplies and settle into the room. Save a major walk for the next full day. If the bus runs late, this plan loses an errand slot instead of the trip’s main outing.

Which Los Glaciares ticket should you buy?

Count park-entry days before buying a pass. Los Glaciares and its El Chaltén entrance show the same general-category prices: ARS 50,000 for a day, ARS 100,000 for a 3-day Flexipass and ARS 175,500 for a 7-day Flexipass. These are the published prices effective 1 June 2026, checked on 28 September. Keep transport, guides, equipment and meals on separate lines. 30

The amended June rule makes Flexipass an online purchase. It is personal, valid for use within 6 months, and permits consecutive or separate days within one park, regardless of entrance. Carry the same ticket and your identity document each time. For a second visit within 72 hours of the first, the rule also provides a 50% second-day discount. 31

Start with the days you genuinely expect to enter. A town rest day uses accommodation and food but does not, by itself, justify an extra park day. A larger pass makes sense only when you can use its coverage. Compare the relevant options after your route is settled, including the second-day offer if it fits your timing.

Pay attention to the name on the purchase screen. Perito Moreno Glacier is part of this Los Glaciares plan; the fee table also has a separate park called Perito Moreno. Check the selected park and visitor category before paying. APN’s online terms generally exclude ticket changes and refunds except where a board resolution allows them. 30, 32

The glacier corridor has its own access hours. APN lists entry from 08:00 to 18:00 in September-April, with exit by 20:00; May-August entry is 09:00-16:00, with exit by 18:00. Arrange your transport around the visit and exit, not just the last permitted arrival. 10

Before checkout, count the people, check the spelling of their names and compare the selected days with the transport bookings. Save tickets offline on more than one device if travelling together. For a family with children or anyone claiming an exemption, resolve the age or documentation category with APN before paying; a general-price calculation is only a starting point.

What changes in El Chaltén in winter?

Plan the walk around current conditions. APN requires trail registration from May through September, and registration for climbing and remote-area trekking. Its winter guidance requires poles and crampons on the northern trails because of ice, snow and mud. Winter road travel in the park also requires studded tyres or approved chains. 3, 4

APN lists Laguna de los Tres at 25 km, 8-9 hours and medium-high difficulty; Laguna Torre is 18 km return, 3-4 hours each way. Reserve a full day for either and check current conditions. 3

Choose one main walk before you arrive, but keep its place in the schedule flexible. A spare day helps you change the order without losing the whole plan. If your group has different walking speeds, agree on the route and turn-back point together. The slowest comfortable pace is the useful pace when everyone intends to return together.

APN warns that mobile signal is weak or absent in some sectors. Carry offline route information and the supplies for the walk, including water, food, spare warmth and a light. Stay on open trails, return with your rubbish and keep clear of frozen lake surfaces, which the park prohibits walking or skating on. 4

Make an easy day a real choice. It can be a short outing approved for current conditions, a slow meal, washing clothes or simply staying in town. Trying to repay a lost day with a longer walk makes the schedule harder just when you need flexibility. A booked room remains useful even when the day’s best decision is to rest.

If hiring a guide or equipment, settle the route, meeting point, equipment fit and cancellation plan before the morning of the outing. Tell the operator about your experience in plain terms. For a demanding route, describe the longest comparable day you have completed, how you felt afterward and what you carried. That gives the guide something more useful than a broad fitness label.

APN planning figures for two long walks 3
RouteDistance and published time
Laguna de los Tres25 km total; 8-9 hours
Laguna Torre18 km return; 3-4 hours each way

Check the exact start, open route and current conditions at the park visitor centre.

For a winter trip centred on snow sports, compare a different regional plan through the Bariloche ski-month guide. Keep that choice separate from this southern walking route. Decide which activity matters first, then choose the gateway, room and transport that support it.

When should you choose northwest Argentina instead?

Choose Jujuy for a different shape of trip. The official Quebrada de Humahuaca driving route follows RN9 for 150 km between Volcán and Tres Cruces, linking Andean towns and views of formations such as the Cerro de los Siete Colores. Purmamarca and Humahuaca are stops to build a slower road itinerary around. 33

Use San Salvador de Jujuy as the gateway. Its tourism office identifies Horacio Guzmán airport in Perico and the city’s bus terminal at Acceso Sur, where RN66 and RN9 meet. From there, arrange the onward journey into the Quebrada. Compare a hired car, a booked driver or a confirmed bus itinerary once your actual arrival time is known. 34

For this alternative, protect a few nights in one town before adding a second base. Pick the outings you most want, locate their departure points and then choose where to sleep. A road trip gives you freedom only if the daily drive leaves time to stop. Put the last night near the departure gateway if an early flight would otherwise require a rushed return.

Choose between this plan and southern Patagonia by the kind of days you want. The southern route is built around a glacier outing and long walks; the northwest alternative gives more room to shape days around towns and road stops. During the park’s winter-rule period, readers who want a less technical holiday should compare the northwest option, then check its own forecast and road conditions before booking.

Buenos Aires needs its own packing decision whichever region you choose. The city’s climate guidance describes humid summer heat, July as the coldest month and wetter periods in March-June and September-December. Pack for each stop and check the forecast just before departure instead of trying to cover the whole journey with a single seasonal label. 35

If you want to compare this trip with another country before buying flights, start with the country travel guides. Set your available nights and the activity you most want first. Those two decisions make the regional choice easier than trying to fit every appealing place into one ticket.

Community-led visits and everyday care

Let the named host shape the visit. For a separate northern Patagonia trip, Neuquén’s provincial report identifies Mankewe, a food and Mapuche cultural centre at the base of Chapelco near San Martín de los Andes, as administered by Comunidad Vera. The report dates from November 2024; obtain the community’s current visitor programme before arranging travel around it. 37

A community-run experience deserves the same practical attention as any other booking: who hosts it, what the visit includes, how payment works and which dates the hosts offer. Use the community’s chosen booking channel once verified. Leave enough time to follow the programme at its intended pace, including the parts that involve listening rather than taking photographs.

Ask permission before photographing people, demonstrations or spaces where the hosts set their own rules. Buy work from makers on the terms they give you, and ask who made an item if that is unclear. A visit is a chance to learn from the people running it; keep their names and preferred descriptions with anything you later share.

In Buenos Aires, the city’s practical advice includes keeping bags off chair backs and avoiding poorly lit streets at night. Save 911 for emergencies and 107 for medical emergencies. Plan your route back before an evening out, and keep enough phone charge to use the booking or address you saved. 12

  • Before a community visit, confirm the named operator, date, inclusions and visitor permissions through the hosts’ current channel.
  • Before leaving a city venue, check the destination and pickup details while still inside. Keep your bag with you.
  • Before a trail day, tell a trusted person the plan and agree when they should expect your return. Carry the route details offline.

Does a tourist visa let me take paid work?

Tourist status excludes paid work under the migration authority’s guidance. If work, study or residence is the purpose of the trip, check the appropriate permission before buying travel around a tourist stay. 6

Should I book exactly three months on a US passport?

Use the US-specific embassy guidance, which says up to 90 days for tourism or business without a visa or reciprocity fee. Three calendar months and 90 days can differ. Check the actual permission granted at entry before arranging a departure near the limit. 7

Is Terminal Pellegrini the same place as the Retiro SUBE desk?

They have different addresses. Tienda León’s Terminal Pellegrini is Carlos Pellegrini 971. The SUBE desk at Retiro station is Avenida Dr. José María Ramos Mejía 1430. Save the correct address for the task you are doing. 14, 22

Can I activate a Personal prepaid SIM online with a foreign passport?

Personal directs people with foreign documents to a branch. Its published self-service process uses Argentine document details. Go with your passport and an unlocked compatible phone, and test the connection before leaving; arrange a separate roaming option if you need data immediately on landing. 11

Can a foreign student get the Teatro Colón resident student price?

The published discounted category is for resident university students, with official proof, bought at the box office using debit or credit. Budget for general admission unless the box office confirms your eligibility. This is a guided-tour tariff, not a performance ticket. 25

Does MALBA offer a student discount on Wednesday?

Accredited students, teachers and retirees enter free on Wednesday; their regular-day admission is ARS 7,000. Present physical or digital proof. Children under 5 and visitors with disabilities also have free admission under the published categories. These terms were checked on 28 September 2026. 26

Can I do this route without renting a car?

Yes: build it around flights to El Calafate, regular buses between El Calafate and El Chaltén, and booked transport for the glacier outing. Check each departure and pickup separately. The car-free version works best when the walking stay has several full days between the two bus journeys. 10

Is a foreign university card enough for the park student rate?

The park rule requires Argentine DNI and proof of regular enrolment at a formal Argentine institution issued within 12 months. Use the general category unless you can meet the full documentation rule. The national and student categories have different purposes. 31

Should I hike after arriving on the late El Chaltén bus?

Keep that evening for check-in and preparations. Set out on a full walking day after checking the local route advice, conditions and return plan. A rushed start leaves little room for a wrong turn, a slower pace or the simple wish to stop and enjoy the view.

What should I cut if I have only seven nights?

Use 3 nights in Buenos Aires, 3 in El Calafate and 1 back in Buenos Aires as a planning outline. Keep one full day for the glacier area and another open. Leave El Chaltén out of this shorter version so the trip retains full days between transfers.
