Australia travel guide

Plan one rewarding Australian route, from Melbourne to the Victorian coast and Gunditjmara Country, with clear costs and time to stop.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Use Melbourne for your first two nights, then Apollo Bay, Port Campbell and Port Fairy before a final Melbourne night. This seven-night plan leaves the airport return on its own day.
  • Reserve your Budj Bim tour before fixing the western nights. Advertised tours run Wednesday to Sunday, with two-, four- and seven-hour choices. 1, 2, 3
  • Keep airport transport as a separate budget line: SkyBus is outside the Victorian public-transport fare cap. 4
  • Bring an electronic payment backup for Tae Rak, a rain layer for the coast and offline copies of your route and bookings. 5, 6, 7

Give this part of Australia a week: a Melbourne arrival, a slow drive along the Great Ocean Road, and a day on Gunditjmara Country at Budj Bim. This guide puts those days in order, from the airport bus to the right tour meeting point. You can copy the seven-night route, shorten it to a coastal break, or build a version with trains and booked transfers.

The focus is southern Victoria. National entry and money advice comes first; the route stays local enough to leave room for lunch, a walk and a change of weather. The overnight splits are MMT planning suggestions. Prices and operating details were checked on 27 September 2026; the booking checklist flags the changes closest to that date.

How many days should you give this route?

Start with seven nights. Put two in Melbourne, one in Apollo Bay, one in Port Campbell, two in Port Fairy and one back in Melbourne. That gives the coast several separate days and protects the Gunditjmara-led visit from a rushed airport return. With a longer flight home ahead, the final city night is worth keeping.

Torquay is the eastern gateway to the Great Ocean Road. Travel west through Lorne and Apollo Bay, then continue towards Port Campbell and Warrnambool. Port Fairy and Tae Rak extend the trip beyond that coastal sequence. The regional tourism body's route links rainforest stops with the Twelve Apostles and the Bay of Islands. 16

Choose the trip's main reason before allocating nights. If you want a long walk, add a second Apollo Bay night. If a full day with a Gunditjmara guide matters most, secure that date and work backwards. If you mainly want Melbourne, take the short coastal version below and keep the western extension for a trip with more time.

Our default is to collect a car after the Melbourne stay and return it before the last city night. Compare the total price with an airport rental, including transfers and city parking. A cheaper daily rental rate can still produce a larger bill when you pay for days during which the car sits unused.

Put your chosen nights into the before shopping for hotels. Count the arrival and departure dates separately from full sightseeing days. A late landing followed by an early departure gives you far less usable time than the same number of hotel nights with daytime flights.

What do you need to enter Australia?

Choose entry permission by passport and purpose. Start with the official Home Affairs eligibility pages. The eVisitor subclass 651 is free for eligible passport holders and requires an application from outside Australia. It allows visits of up to three months at a time during its twelve-month travel period. Check the country list and your own grant conditions before booking. 17

For eligible ETA applicants, the Australian Embassy directs travellers to the Australian ETA app. On 27 September 2026, it lists an AUD 20 app service fee and no separate visa application charge. Use the app links on the embassy's visa page; the embassy warns against websites selling ETA applications or paid expedited processing. 9

The offshore Visitor visa subclass 600 Tourist stream is another route to check when your circumstances fall outside the simpler options. Home Affairs lists it from AUD 250, with limited concessions for eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens. Its grant determines the stay, which can be three, six or twelve months. Additional document or examination costs can apply. 18

For arrival, the Australian Border Force still describes a paper Incoming Passenger Card as the usual process. Its digital Australia Travel Declaration pilot is for invited eligible Qantas passengers. Follow the process your airline supplies, and keep your first accommodation address available without needing mobile data. 19

Pack with biosecurity in mind. Certain food, plant and animal products need declaration. Footwear and equipment used around animals or in rural areas need cleaning and declaration too. Keep those items easy to reach so you can show an officer. Check the official goods guide before packing gifts or trail snacks. 20

Your first afternoon in Melbourne

Make Southern Cross your first transport landmark. SkyBus Melbourne City Express links Melbourne Tullamarine Airport with Southern Cross Station. Use the airport printed on your flight booking when choosing transport. 8

For a short stay, search the western city centre near Southern Cross first. It keeps the arrival simple. Southbank and Docklands are other lodging areas to compare; Visit Victoria lists accommodation in both. Choose the district around your evening plans, then check the actual walk or transit journey from the station to the hotel entrance. 21

Give the arrival day a light plan: check in, eat, take a short walk and sleep. Save the regional drive for a rested morning. If your room is unavailable until afternoon, arrange luggage storage and keep a small bag with a change of clothes. A first-day booking with a strict start time adds pressure before you know how the flight will go.

The SkyBus return is one person’s two-trip ticket, valid for twelve months. Airport access, road tolls and GST are included. On 27 September 2026, the operator lists service hours of 4am to 1am; check the timetable against your landing and departure. 8

  1. Clear the border

Complete passport checks, collect baggage and follow the declaration lane instructions. Keep the items you declared accessible until you have finished biosecurity clearance. 19, 20

  2. Reach the city

Follow airport signs for your booked transfer, and have its ticket saved on your phone. For City Express, use Southern Cross Station as the destination when mapping your onward walk. 8

  3. Drop the bags

Go to your chosen hotel before starting the day out. Save its front-door location and reception instructions; the address of an apartment building and the key-collection point can be different.

  4. Set up tomorrow

Locate the rental pickup point or next station, charge your devices and download the coast map. Leave the first evening loose enough to finish early if you need sleep.

SkyBus includes airport access, tolls and GST. It is excluded from the public-transport cap, as are ferries and non-subsidised regional buses. The temporary cap runs from 1 June 2026 until 1 January 2027.

Can you travel without a car?

Separate the coast from the last transfer to Tae Rak. Southern Cross serves the Warrnambool line. For Apollo Bay, the V/Line timetable shows a train from Southern Cross to Geelong, then a coach to Apollo Bay Information Centre. Use the current timetable list for your dates and check service changes. 22, 23, 24

For a first car-free visit, choose one coastal base and keep the connections simple. Melbourne plus Apollo Bay is a more forgiving plan than changing hotels at every scenic stop. For Budj Bim, another option is to use Warrnambool as the regional base and arrange a return transfer to the tour. Price that transfer before committing to rooms.

Tae Rak has no public transport access. The operator's FAQs list charter contacts, including Coles Coaches in Warrnambool. Treat those as leads for an advance booking, with both directions agreed. Reaching a regional station still leaves a separate journey to the Aquaculture Centre. 25

On participating services, Victoria accepts myki or Visa and Mastercard contactless payment, including supported phones and watches. Contactless is full fare only. V/Line coaches need paper tickets or eTickets. For trams wholly inside Melbourne's Free Tram Zone, leave the card untapped; check the zone boundary before a trip that crosses it. 11

The temporary full-fare daily cap is AUD 5.70 until 1 January 2027, as checked on 27 September 2026. SkyBus, ferries and non-subsidised regional buses sit outside it. A cheap regional fare helps, but the practical limit is where a service stops and when it comes back. 4

  • Write down the exact boarding stop and arrival stop, including the station or coach interchange name. Keep a copy of the timetable that applies to your travel date.
  • Plan the hotel transfer with luggage in mind. A property outside town works very differently when you have no car to fetch dinner or reach an early departure.
  • For a day tour, choose a pickup that you can reach on foot or by a confirmed connection. Compare the stated stops, time out of the vehicle and return location before paying.

Driving the coast at a sensible pace

Rent for the regional days you will use. Check each driver's documents before choosing a vehicle. VicRoads allows a current overseas licence for the right vehicle class when you plan to reside and drive in Victoria for less than six months. That period starts when you begin living in the state; leaving and returning does not reset it. Other eligibility exclusions apply. 12

Carry the licence while driving. If it is outside English, also carry an English translation or an international driving permit in English. Check rental-company age and licence-tenure terms separately. The state rule and the rental contract answer different questions, so settle both before paying for a non-refundable vehicle. 12

Victoria's visitor guidance says to drive on the left, wear seatbelts and take a break every two hours. It also warns about wildlife at dawn and dusk. Plan the overnight town before setting out, and stop for photographs only where you can pull off safely. A short map distance still deserves a full day when you intend to stop. 13

At collection, photograph the vehicle and confirm the fuel policy, return location and after-hours procedure. Put every intended driver on the agreement. Read the excess, exclusions and any unsealed-road restrictions before adding a side trip. Keep those terms with the booking, where both travellers can find them.

Build each driving day around one main outing. On the first coast day that can be a long stop around Lorne; on the next, a forest walk; farther west, the cliff viewpoints. Leave room between them for lunch and weather. If a day slips, cut the optional detour before cutting the rest break.

When should you go, and what should you pack?

Pack for the coast as well as the city. Bureau of Meteorology statistics show a January mean maximum of 26.8°C at Melbourne Olympic Park and 21.5°C at Cape Otway Lighthouse. In July, those figures are 14.5°C and 13.0°C. These are station averages over different records, useful for packing rather than predicting a particular afternoon. 14, 6

Start with a waterproof outer layer, something warm underneath and shoes you can walk in after rain. Keep them reachable in the car. It is easier to enjoy a short stop when putting on a jacket takes a minute, instead of unpacking every bag in the boot. Bring a dry change for the next hotel.

Choose your season around how you want to spend the days. A trip built around long walks needs different clothing and flexibility from a series of short viewpoints. Once you have dates, check the forecast for each overnight town before committing to a long outdoor day.

For the seven-night plan, use the spare afternoon near Port Fairy as your main breathing space. A wet morning can become a late start, a longer lunch or time to dry clothes. A severe-weather warning calls for a different plan altogether. Keep the return to Melbourne independent of a final weather-sensitive activity.

Choose rooms that fit the season and how you travel. For a walking trip, space to hang wet clothing can matter more than a balcony. For a family, a table for a simple meal can save an evening outing when everyone is tired. Compare useful features before comparing photographs.

All-years station statistics, not a shared climate-normal period or a forecast. Melbourne data begin in 2013; Cape Otway has a much longer record.

  • Keep rainwear, warm layers and dry socks in a small day bag.
  • Carry drinking water and an easy lunch on driving days.
  • Save the local forecast and warnings before leaving reliable reception.

Apollo Bay, Port Campbell and the western towns

Choose your bed around the next morning. Apollo Bay works as the first coastal night in this route; Port Campbell breaks the next stretch before Warrnambool. The regional itinerary places Maits Rest and Cape Otway between Apollo Bay and Port Campbell, then the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge near the latter. Pick a few stops from that sequence. 16

Search in the town itself if you want to leave the car parked after dinner. Before booking a rural cottage, map the evening meal and the next day's departure. A kitchen is useful only if you buy food before settling in. For one-night stays, prioritise a clear check-in process over extras you will barely use.

At Port Campbell, plan a viewpoint day with time outside the car. On 27 September 2026, the coast authority says the Loch Ard Gorge beach-access steps are closed because of geological instability. Keep to open routes and respect barriers. Check the Loch Ard Gorge status before going. 15

Tower Hill adds a different stop between Warrnambool and Port Fairy: a volcanic crater with wetlands and wildlife. The regional tourism body identifies Worn Gundidj Aboriginal Cooperative as the visitor-centre manager. Give a walk there its own time, and keep distance from animals. Leave feeding and close-up pursuits out of the visit. 27

For the western nights, compare Port Fairy, Warrnambool and Heywood. We suggest Port Fairy for keeping the coastal sequence together, Warrnambool for a rail-based version, and Heywood when the tour approach is the priority. The Budj Bim operator lists Heywood as the nearest town with accommodation. Check the exact route from your chosen address. 25, 22

A day on Gunditjmara Country

Give Budj Bim a day of its own. Gunditjmara people own or co-manage the World Heritage property, lead research and monitoring, and run guided visits. The aquaculture system and the contemporary work of caring for Country belong in the same story. A tour offers the chance to hear that story from a Gunditjmara guide. 28

The two-hour Tae Rak tour introduces Lake Condah and kooyang, or eel, through Gunditjmara guiding. The four-hour Stone Country tour extends the visit to cultural places and stone house remains. The seven-hour Kooyang Yana tour gives the day to this wider experience, with food included. Choose for the depth and shape of the day you want. 1, 2, 3

Set your destination to Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre on Vaughans Road, Breakaway Creek. That is the tour meeting point. The operator distinguishes it from Budj Bim National Park and asks guests to arrive fifteen minutes early. Save the booking's map pin as well as the written address. 25

On 27 September 2026, the centre lists free admission, Wednesday to Sunday opening from 9am to 4pm, and electronic payments only. Its café serves dishes using native ingredients and kooyang tasting plates. Reserve a table if lunch is part of your plan; leave enough time between eating and a separate tour departure. 5

Treat the guide's directions as the terms of the visit. Ask before photographing people or recording an explanation. Stay with the group in cultural places and let the guide decide what can be shared. Allow a change of sites without treating the printed itinerary as a claim on access.

Give the tour your attention by keeping the rest of that day light. Have your water and layers ready before leaving the hotel. For the longer option, plan to return to the same bed afterward. That removes the need to pack up, check out and find a new room around the cultural visit.

How much do the Budj Bim tours cost?

Compare the whole experience. The adult starting prices checked on 27 September 2026 are AUD 89 for two hours, AUD 159 for four hours and AUD 199 for seven hours. All three list a Gunditjmara guide, transport during the tour, activities or walks, and access fees. The chart shows the total advertised adult starting price for each product. 1, 2, 3

The seven-hour tour also includes morning tea, lunch and a kooyang tasting platter. That gives a useful decision: its advertised starting price is AUD 40 above the four-hour tour. Choose it when the longer day and those inclusions suit you. Check dietary needs with the operator before booking the meal-based option. 2, 3

For a short visit, the two-hour choice leaves room for a separate meal and a quiet afternoon. The four-hour choice puts more of the day into guided cultural places. A longer tour is worthwhile only if your group wants that time; children, standing tolerance and the following day's drive all belong in the decision.

Keep the transfer to Tae Rak as a separate budget line. Included tour transport starts with the operator's programme; arrange your journey to the meeting point yourself. Before paying, check the final total for your date and party, including tax treatment, any booking charges and the age rules for child tickets. 1, 25

Cards, phones and the rest of your budget

Build the budget from bookings you can price. Start with flights and entry permission, then enter each room total, rental agreement and booked experience. Split shared costs by the actual number travelling. Keep personal spending separate so a solo café stop or a different activity does not complicate the common pot.

For accommodation, compare the full stay including parking, breakfast and cancellation terms. For the car, record the quoted rental charge separately from the deposit and excess exposure. Add fuel from your intended route and the vehicle you choose. These choices matter more than a countrywide daily average, which would hide the shape of this trip.

Payment rules are changing close to this guide's check date. On 27 September 2026, the ACCC says card surcharges are capped at the business's acceptance cost. It says Visa, Mastercard, American Express and eftpos introduce no-surcharge rules on 1 October. Weekend and public-holiday hospitality surcharges are a separate category and remain outside that change. 30

For a phone benchmark, Telstra lists an AUD 44 prepaid mobile recharge with 20GB of base data, 28 days' expiry, and unlimited standard Australian calls and texts on 27 September 2026. Compare the current prepaid plans with your own roaming package. Check device compatibility and activation requirements before paying. 31

Telstra describes its coverage maps as predictive guidance. Download road maps, tour tickets and lodging instructions before the regional leg. Keep enough battery for the return journey, and agree on a meeting point if your party splits up. A saved address is more useful than a booking email that needs to load. 7

For use in Australia. Standard Australian calls and texts are unlimited. International allowances have destination limits. This is a recharge reference, not a promised starter-SIM offer; check final purchase terms and any additional charges.

Use the travel money hub for the wider budget, then return to the actual supplier totals for this route. Give the shared worksheet one currency, AUD, and a separate space for what your bank ultimately charges at home. Save receipts as you go so the final split stays straightforward.

Coastal safety and daily checks

Treat the cliff stops as walks, not swimming plans. Parks Victoria's visitor guide says the beaches in Port Campbell National Park and Bay of Islands Coastal Park are unpatrolled and unsuitable for swimming. It warns that cliffs can fail without warning. Stay behind barriers and away from cliff bases, even when the sea looks calm. 32

For a swim, choose a beach with an active lifesaving patrol and follow its flags and warnings. The same guide identifies Port Campbell's patrolled beach but notes that patrols are seasonal. Decide on the day, after checking conditions. Keep a scenic cove off the swimming schedule when there is no patrol. 32

Check road conditions and emergency warnings over breakfast, before the day's driving starts. Read the alert for the place you plan to visit, not just your overnight town. Keep an alternative that involves staying put or returning by a confirmed open route. A booked room is a reason to plan carefully, not to continue through a closure. Check VicEmergency preparation advice before the regional leg. 33

For urgent help, call 000. Give your location clearly, including a nearby road, landmark or emergency-marker code where one is available. Save the names of your planned stops before leaving reception. If several people are travelling, make sure more than one person has the route and the day's accommodation details. 15, 32

Choose each walk for the group present that morning. Read the route board, carry water and turn back while the return still feels manageable. For a longer walking trip, use the adventure travel hub to start a separate plan; add the relevant park's track notes and closure checks before setting out.

  • Open VicTraffic before driving and allow for signed detours. Recheck if weather changes the route.
  • Open VicEmergency for warnings affecting the coast and inland return. Follow the current advice for the area you are entering.
  • Check the coast authority for access to the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge. Keep photographs and walks within the open areas.

Two routes you can copy

Count nights first, then place the tour day. These itineraries are MMT planning frameworks. The seven-night version spends two nights in Port Fairy so the cultural visit sits between them. Check the tour calendar before assigning weekdays, and keep the last Melbourne night if your onward flight is early or difficult to change.

For a group, choose one person to keep the booking list and share a copy with everyone. Put the address, check-in time and cancellation deadline beside each night. Write the next morning's departure point underneath it. That is enough structure to keep moving without turning every hour into an appointment.

The shorter version ends at Apollo Bay. It is the choice for four nights when you want both a Melbourne stay and time on the coast. Keep the Twelve Apostles and Budj Bim for a longer visit, or replace the whole coastal portion with a different focused excursion. Trying to keep every western stop would change the pace of the trip.

BEFORE YOU GO

Australia travel questions, answered.

Find the practical detail you need, or browse by topic.

Is the twelve-month eVisitor period a twelve-month stay?

No. It is a period in which eligible holders can travel, with stays of up to three months per entry. Read your grant for the conditions that apply to you. If your plan needs a longer continuous stay, check a different visa before setting the dates. 17

Does being over 65 qualify me for the SkyBus senior fare?

Age alone is insufficient. SkyBus requires a valid Australian state-issued Seniors card or Victorian Carers Card for its senior fare. An overseas visitor without an accepted card should budget the adult fare. Have the required eligibility document available when boarding. 8

Does the cheap public-transport cap include my airport bus?

SkyBus is excluded. Keep the Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross transfer as its own purchase, then use the applicable city or regional fare for later journeys. Ferries and non-subsidised regional bus services are also excluded from the temporary Victorian fare discount. 4

Does a short trip out of Victoria restart the overseas-licence period?

No. VicRoads counts six months from when you start living in Victoria, including when you leave and return. A visitor planning to remain longer should check the licence-conversion process. Rental-company acceptance is an additional check, even when the state driving rules allow your licence. 12

Should I book the coast before or after Melbourne?

For a long-haul arrival, put Melbourne first. Our suggested order gives you two nights to settle in before collecting a car. If your only available cultural-tour date comes earlier, work backwards from it and add a rest night before driving. Keep the final return day clear either way.

Can I bring a pet to Tae Rak?

Pets are excluded from the Aquaculture Centre and cultural tours; registered assistance dogs are the exception. If you are travelling with an animal, settle its care before choosing the tour day. Leave enough time for that arrangement on both sides of the booking. 29

Can I stop at Tae Rak just for lunch?

Yes. The Aquaculture Centre café accepts table bookings, and centre admission is free. On 27 September 2026 the centre lists Wednesday to Sunday hours of 9am to 4pm. Book a meal at a suitable time and take electronic payment; a café visit and a guided cultural tour are separate plans. 5

Will summer clothes be enough for Cape Otway?

Pack a warm layer and rainwear too. Cape Otway Lighthouse has a January mean maximum of 21.5°C in the cited station statistics. Use that as a reason to bring layers, then check the local forecast shortly before leaving Melbourne. Keep the jacket in the day bag instead of underneath the luggage. 6

Where should I cut costs first on this route?

Compare fewer car-hire days, fewer hotel moves and the room features you will actually use. Keep the cultural tour that matters to you, then remove optional paid stops around it. For two people, enter shared room and car costs once in the worksheet; enter per-person tickets for each traveller.

Can I drive from the western end straight to my flight?

Our route uses a final Melbourne night. Keep it for an early flight or a ticket that would be costly to replace. If you decide to travel on flight day, calculate backwards from the airline check-in deadline and rental return, then allow for the current road conditions and a rest break.
