Which ride actually runs today?
One train route, one bus network and one highway, with the fares each of them published on 25 September 2026.
You land at Cancún, and three signs point three different ways. One sends you to the ADO counter inside the terminal. One sends you to the shuttle for the Tren Maya platform. One sends you to the rental desks. The choice you make in the next ten minutes decides how far south you sleep tonight, how much cash you carry, and whether you can pull over for a cenote at four in the afternoon.
The train is the newest option and the shortest one. Tren Maya's own site leads with a single resumed coastal route: Cancún Airport to Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen, running again since 15 August 2026, with a shuttle called Tren Maya Conecta feeding the stations. The ride takes 46 to 52 minutes. 1, 2
South of Playa del Carmen the picture changes. A federal collegiate tribunal granted a definitive suspension of construction work on Tramo 5, the Cancún to Tulum section, after the environmental group Selvame MX challenged its environmental authorization. Engineers had flagged the cave systems and cenotes below as a collapse risk. 9
That ruling was reported on 14 February 2026. On 25 September 2026 the operator's own pages still describe Tulum station in future terms. 1
| Option | Where it goes today | Time | One-way fare, MXN |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tren Maya | Cancún Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen | 46 to 52 min | 74 to 197 |
| ADO bus | Cancún Airport and downtown Cancún south to Playa del Carmen and Tulum | 1 h 15 to 3 h 05 | 124 to 475 |
| Rental car | Anywhere on Highway 307, toll-free | 90 to 120 min to Tulum | Fuel plus the counter bill |
Train fares run from the local, student and INAPAM rate up to international tourist class. Bus fares run from the downtown Cancún boarding point up to the full airport-to-Tulum ride. Car costs depend on the quote for your dates, since the rental companies publish live prices only.
How much is the Tren Maya from Cancún to Playa del Carmen?
Four fares ride the same train, and the cheapest one belongs to the people who live there. When the coastal segment reopened on 15 August 2026, the announced prices for Cancún to Playa del Carmen were 74 pesos for locals, students and INAPAM cardholders, 99 pesos for Quintana Roo residents, 148 pesos in national tourist class and 197 pesos in international tourist class. A visitor flying in pays the 197-peso fare, about $11.42. 2, 4
| Ticket | MXN | USD at 17.2454 |
|---|---|---|
| Local, student, INAPAM | 74 | 4.29 |
| Quintana Roo resident | 99 | 5.74 |
| National tourist class | 148 | 8.58 |
| International tourist class | 197 | 11.42 |
| Tren Maya Conecta shuttle, one ride | 55 | 3.19 |
Dollar figures are conversions at the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate of 17.2454 pesos per dollar for 18 September 2026, which was still the current weekly figure on the research date.
The station is the start of one more short trip. Tren Maya Conecta, the shuttle that links stations to city centres and the airport, charges 55 pesos a ride, about $3.19. In Cancún it runs to the airport, Plaza Las Américas and the Hotel Zone. In Playa del Carmen it runs to Plaza Playacar and the Zona Hotelera Mayan. Add it to the fare and the airport-to-Playa journey comes to 252 pesos, about $14.61. 2, 4
That is the train's case in one line: 46 to 52 minutes, a fixed price, and a second short hop at the end. It suits a traveller with one bag who is heading for Playa del Carmen anyway. For anyone sleeping in Tulum on night one, the train covers the first half of the journey and the bus or a taxi covers the rest. 2
What does the ADO bus from Cancún airport cost?
Airport fares, downtown fares and the Tulum run, read from ADO's own booking pages on 25 September 2026.
Boarding inside the airport costs 146 pesos more than boarding downtown. ADO's own airport page prices Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen at around 270 pesos one way, about $15.66. Buses leave from Terminal 2, 3 or 4 and take 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 50, depending on which terminal the driver calls at first. Terminal 1 has no ADO service. 5, 4
The same operator sells the downtown Cancún run to Playa del Carmen from around 124 pesos, about $7.19, in about 1 hour 20, with departures every 15 to 30 minutes. If your day already takes you into the city, that is the cheaper place to board. 6, 4
The Tulum ride is the long one. A one-way ticket from the airport to the Tulum ADO terminal runs around 475 pesos, about $27.54, taking 2 hours 45 to 3 hours 5, with departures roughly every one to two hours. The bus sets you down on Avenida Tulum in the town centre. A colectivo or a taxi covers the last stretch to the beach road or the ruins. 3, 4
| Journey | Time | MXN | USD at 17.2454 | How often |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen | 1 h 15 to 1 h 50 | 270 | 15.66 | Every 20 to 40 min for much of the day |
| Downtown Cancún to Playa del Carmen | about 1 h 20 | from 124 | 7.19 | Every 15 to 30 min |
| Playa del Carmen to Tulum | - | 90 to 136 | 5.22 to 7.89 | Queried for travel on 25 September 2026 |
| Cancún Airport to Tulum | 2 h 45 to 3 h 05 | 475 | 27.54 | Roughly every 1 to 2 hours |
The Playa del Carmen to Tulum figures are live fares pulled from ADO's booking widget for one day of travel, so read them as representative. Terminal Turística is the Playa del Carmen boarding point for that leg.
Splitting the ride saves money and buys a night. Airport to Playa del Carmen at 270 pesos, then Playa del Carmen to Tulum at 136 pesos, comes to 406 pesos, about $23.54. That is 69 pesos under the direct 475-peso ticket, and it puts a night in Playa del Carmen in the middle of a journey you were making anyway. Travellers who want Tulum by dinner should take the direct bus and skip the change. 5, 10, 3, 4

Should you rent a car in the Yucatán?
The daily rate is the smallest part of the bill. Mexican law requires third-party liability cover on every vehicle, so the counter policy is mandatory on every rental. Enterprise's own Mexico terms put that cover at up to 4,000,000 pesos of damage to third parties. 7
A US or Canadian auto policy counts for nothing at a Cancún counter. Enterprise's page rules out policies bought through third-party travel sites and cover attached to a credit or debit card as well. Buying the Mexican liability protection is simply the price of the keys. 7
The deposit is where the choice shows up on your credit limit. Decline the counter policy with proof of Mexican liability cover in hand and the hold on your card is 50,000 pesos, or USD 2,500. Buy the liability protection and the hold falls to 10,000 pesos, or USD 500. That is a 40,000-peso swing sitting on your card for the length of the rental. 7
Under 25, there is a daily surcharge with your name on it. Enterprise sets 25 as the standard minimum age. Drivers aged 21 to 24 add 104.40 pesos a day and drivers under 21 add 510 pesos a day. Over a seven-day rental that is 730.80 pesos, about $42.38, or 3,570 pesos, about $207.01, on top of the rental and the insurance. 7, 4
| Line | Terms | MXN | USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party liability cover | Mandatory on every rental, up to 4,000,000 pesos per event | - | - |
| Deposit hold, liability cover bought | Held on a credit card in the driver's name | 10,000 | 500 |
| Deposit hold, liability cover declined | Requires proof of existing Mexican cover | 50,000 | 2,500 |
| Young driver surcharge, ages 21 to 24 | Per day, 7 days = 730.80 pesos | 104.40 | 6.05 |
| Young driver surcharge, under 21 | Per day, 7 days = 3,570 pesos | 510 | 29.57 |
Documents: a passport or INE voter card, a driving licence valid through the end of the contract, and a credit card in the driver's name. Debit and prepaid cards are turned away for the deposit. Dollar figures at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, except the deposit holds, which Enterprise states in both currencies.
The road itself is free. The entire Cancún to Tulum drive runs on Federal Highway 307, two lanes each way, with no toll booths on the stretch. A transfer operator's own page puts the airport-to-Tulum distance at 118 km and the drive at 90 to 120 minutes in normal traffic. Playa del Carmen sits at km 68. 8
High season adds 20 to 40 minutes to that drive, around Semana Santa, Christmas and the July and August peak. Quintana Roo's toll plazas sit inland. Most of them are on the Mérida to Cancún corridor and its branch down to Playa del Carmen, a 44.2 km stretch with seven plazas costing up to 408 pesos for a car. That is a road this trip skips entirely. 8, 11

| Fuel, one way | 223.64 MXN (USD 12.97) | 9.44 x 23.691 |
| Fuel, there and back | 447.29 MXN (USD 25.94) | 9.44 x 23.691 x 2 |
The consumption figure is the one assumption in this worksheet, labelled so you can swap in your own car's number. Everything else is read from a source on the research date. The 23.691-peso price is Mexico's national average for regular petrol; pumps in tourist areas run higher. Premium was 28.584 pesos a litre and diesel 27.007.
Which option is cheapest for your group?
Fares multiply by the number of people. Fuel and the rental bill stay one number for the car.

| Item | Value (MXN) |
|---|---|
| ADO, Cancún airport to Tulum | 475 MXN |
| ADO, Cancún airport to Playa del Carmen | 270 MXN |
| Tren Maya, airport to Playa, international class | 197 MXN |
| Tren Maya, airport to Playa, national class | 148 MXN |

| ADO, downtown Cancún to Playa del Carmen | 124 MXN |
| Tren Maya Conecta shuttle, one ride | 55 MXN |
Both of those journeys finish in Playa del Carmen. The 146-peso gap between them is only about where you board: inside the airport terminal, or at the downtown Cancún station. The Playa del Carmen to Tulum bar shows the top of the 90 to 136-peso live-fare range. Source: 3, 5, 2, 10, 6
Every bar above is a per-person price, and that is the whole argument for the car. A party of two doubles each fare. A party of four quadruples it. Fuel, the rental and the insurance stay one bill however many seats are filled, which is why the balance tips somewhere between two travellers and four. 3, 12
- Two people, airport to Tulum on ADO: 950 pesos, about $55.09. Four people: 1,900 pesos, about $110.17. Those are ticket prices before the taxi from the Tulum terminal out to a beach hotel. 3, 4
- Two people on the train to Playa del Carmen, shuttle included: 504 pesos, about $29.23, for a 46 to 52 minute ride and a short hop at the end. Four people: 1,008 pesos. 2, 4
- Fuel for the same drive is one number for the whole car. 118 km at 8 litres per 100 km and 23.691 pesos a litre works out to about 224 pesos one way, whether one person rides or four. The rental quote, the mandatory liability cover and the deposit hold sit on top of it. 8, 12, 7
- Gear changes the sum before the arithmetic does. Dive bags, a cooler and a week of beach kit fit a boot and ride free. MMT prices the rest of that week in the Cozumel diving budget.
There is a third answer that most two-week trips end up at: buses for the long hops, a car for two or three days in the middle. You pay the counter bill only for the days you actually drive, and the deposit hold clears when you hand the keys back. 7
The rest of the country works differently, and cheaply. MMT's Mexico country guide covers entry, money and the first day across the whole country, and the exchange-rate worksheet shows what a ten percent move in the peso does to a two-week budget built on the fares above. 4
A two-week route that uses all three
Fourteen nights, four bases, one rental picked up in the middle. This is the shape that fits the fares as they stand on 25 September 2026: train or bus south from the airport, ferries and buses along the coast, and a car for the inland days when a bus timetable starts costing you afternoons. 2, 5, 10
- 01Playa del Carmen4 nights
The easiest first base on the coast: the train and the bus both reach it directly from the airport, and the Cozumel ferry leaves from the middle of town.
→ Tren Maya from Cancún Airport, 197 pesos plus a 55-peso Conecta shuttle, or ADO at around 270 pesos - 02Cozumel3 nights
The island keeps its own pace, and the reef wall off the south end is the reason most divers come to this coast at all.
→ Passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen; walk on with bags - 03Tulum4 nights
Base for the ancestral coastal site, the cenotes signed off Highway 307, and the road west toward Cobá and Valladolid.
→ ADO from Playa del Carmen, 90 to 136 pesos, or a rental car picked up here for the inland days - 04Cancún3 nights
Close the loop near the airport, with the islands and the lagoon in reach for the last days.
→ ADO north up Highway 307, or the train from Playa del Carmen
With less time: With one week: three nights in Playa del Carmen and four in Tulum, one ADO ticket between them at 90 to 136 pesos, and a car for two days only.
The route works in reverse just as well. What it depends on is the one fixed point: the coastal train ends at Playa del Carmen today, so anything south of there travels by bus, by colectivo or on four wheels you have paid for. 1, 9
Your first hour at Cancún airport
The first hour sets the price of the whole first day. Five decisions, in the order the airport puts them in front of you.
Find Terminal 2, 3 or 4
ADO sells the airport run from Terminals 2, 3 and 4, and Terminal 1 has no ADO service. Buses to Playa del Carmen leave every 20 to 40 minutes for much of the day. 5
For the train, budget the shuttle too
Tren Maya Conecta links the airport to the station and charges 55 pesos a ride. The same shuttle meets you at the far end in Playa del Carmen and runs to Plaza Playacar and the Zona Hotelera Mayan. 2
At the rental counter, have three things out
A passport or INE card, a driving licence valid through the end of the contract, and a credit card in the driver's name. The deposit hold lands on that card: 10,000 pesos with the liability cover bought, 50,000 pesos with it declined. 7
Think in pesos
Every fare on this page is priced in pesos by the operator that sells it. Budget in pesos and treat the dollar figures here as conversions at the Federal Reserve rate of 17.2454 for 18 September 2026. What your own card adds on top is a separate question, and MMT works it through in how to read a travel payment quote. 4
The people this coast belongs to
The train takes its name from people who are right here, working this coast today. Maya communities live along every kilometre of the route between Cancún and Tulum, in the towns the highway runs through and the ones signed off it.
Many of the cenotes on that stretch are run by ejidos and Maya cooperatives. The fee at the gate is theirs, set by the people who run the site. Carry pesos for it, and ask before you photograph anyone at work.
The archaeological sites on this coast are ancestral places of communities that are still here, with hours and ticket prices set by the bodies that manage each one. Those fees sit outside the fares on this page, and they change from season to season. Look them up the week you go.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Tren Maya go to Tulum?
On 25 September 2026 the operator's own site headlines one resumed coastal route: Cancún Airport to Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen. Its Tulum station pages still use future language. The most recent dated ruling on the Cancún to Tulum section, reported on 14 February 2026, granted a definitive suspension of construction work there. Fares you see quoted for a Cancún to Tulum train trace back to a 2024 announcement. Take the bus south of Playa del Carmen and check the operator's site before you travel. 1, 9
Is the train faster than the bus from Cancún airport to Playa del Carmen?
Yes, on the timetable. The train covers Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen in 46 to 52 minutes at 148 pesos in national class or 197 in international class. The ADO bus takes 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 50 at around 270 pesos. Add the 55-peso Conecta shuttle at the airport end and the journey comes to 252 pesos, about $14.61. The bus wins on frequency, leaving every 20 to 40 minutes for much of the day. 2, 5, 4
How do I get from Cancún airport to Tulum without a car?
One ADO ticket covers it: around 475 pesos, about $27.54, in 2 hours 45 to 3 hours 5, with departures roughly every one to two hours from Terminals 2, 3 and 4. It sets you down at the ADO terminal on Avenida Tulum in the town centre, and a colectivo or taxi takes you the rest of the way to the beach road or the ruins. Breaking the trip in Playa del Carmen costs 270 plus 136 pesos, so 406 in total, 69 pesos under the direct fare. 3, 5, 10, 4
Why is the airport bus fare higher than the one I saw online?
Because the cheaper fare starts downtown. ADO prices the airport run to Playa del Carmen at around 270 pesos, and the same journey from the central Cancún terminal from around 124 pesos, a gap of 146 pesos a head. If your plans already take you into Cancún, board there. If you are walking out of arrivals with bags, the airport fare buys you a bus at the kerb every 20 to 40 minutes. 5, 6
What insurance do I need to rent a car in Mexico?
Third-party liability cover, bought in Mexico, on every rental. Enterprise's own Mexico policy states that Mexican law requires it, puts the cover at up to 4,000,000 pesos per event, and rules out policies bought through third-party travel sites and cover attached to credit or debit cards. Decline it with proof of existing Mexican cover and the deposit hold on your card goes to 50,000 pesos or USD 2,500, against 10,000 pesos or USD 500 with the cover bought. 7
Are there tolls between Cancún and Tulum?
No. The whole Cancún to Tulum run is on Federal Highway 307, which has no toll booths on that stretch. Quintana Roo's toll plazas are inland, on roads this coastal trip never touches. 8, 11
How much extra do drivers under 25 pay in Mexico?
At Enterprise, 104.40 pesos a day for ages 21 to 24 and 510 pesos a day for drivers under 21, on top of the rental and the mandatory insurance. Over a week that is 730.80 pesos, about $42.38, or 3,570 pesos, about $207.01. 7, 4
What is a peso fare in dollars?
Divide by 17.2454, the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate for 18 September 2026, which was still the current weekly figure on 25 September. That puts the 270-peso airport bus at $15.66, the 475-peso Tulum bus at $27.54, and a 197-peso train ticket at $11.42. Operators sell in pesos, so the peso price is the real one and the dollar figure moves with the rate. 4, 5, 3, 2
