Switzerland travel guide
Choose your Swiss rail route, find the right base, and spend on the mountain days you most want.
- CHF 439 buys an eight-day adult second-class Swiss Travel Pass in 2026; age 25+ pricing applies. 1
- CHF 150 buys one month of Swiss Half Fare Card discounts for residents outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein; travel tickets cost extra. 2
- CHF 54 is the compulsory Glacier Express seat reservation, payable in addition to your ticket or valid pass. 3
- 11 October-4 December 2026: no Glacier Express service. Build an autumn trip around other trains during that break. 4

Make room for a lake afternoon between the mountain days. This guide joins Lucerne, the Bernese Oberland, Lake Geneva and Zermatt into trips you can actually unpack for, with station names, pass choices and the charges that sit outside the rail ticket. Start with the places you want to wake up in. The right pass follows from that route.
In Lavaux, the walking route from St-Saphorin to Lutry climbs through vineyard terraces above Lake Geneva. It is 11 kilometres with 440 metres of ascent, so give it an afternoon of its own. That change of pace is part of the pleasure of Switzerland: a vineyard walk can matter as much as another summit. 5

Where should you stay on a first trip?
Choose two main bases for a week. Lucerne and Interlaken make a useful first pairing: a city stay, then time devoted to mountain outings. For ten nights, add Montreux and Zermatt. Treat this as a choice of pace. Four bases give you more variety, while two leave more room to move a mountain day when the view disappears into cloud.
In Lucerne, start the lodging search around the main station or in the old town. The LUBO at Rössligasse 2/4 is one named old-town option, listed about ten minutes on foot from the station. Its digital check-in and mobile key suit a traveller comfortable using a phone for arrival. A staffed reception is a better fit if you want help when you reach the door. 14
For the Oberland, prioritise the Interlaken Ost end of town if most days begin on a train. Jungfraujoch journeys start from Ost toward Grindelwald Terminal or Lauterbrunnen. A room in Grindelwald or Wengen changes the emphasis toward a mountain-village stay. Choose that version when the region is the centre of your holiday, rather than a brief stop between Lucerne and Montreux. 15
In Zermatt, the railway station sits in the village centre beside the Gornergrat Railway. For a short stay, use Bahnhofplatz and the station end of the village as your search area. This keeps the arrival and the next morning’s rail outing close together. A more distant room can still work, but measure its real walking route before comparing it with a station-area price. 16
| Base | Suggested nights | Choose it for |
|---|---|---|
| Lucerne | 2-3 | First arrival and a lake or mountain day |
| Interlaken Ost area | 3-4 | Rail access and flexible Oberland days |
| Montreux | 2-3 | Chillon and a separate Lavaux outing |
| Zermatt station area | 2-3 | Gornergrat and time in the village |
Night counts are planning suggestions. Choose fewer bases when you have fewer days.
Montreux earns two nights if you want both Chillon and Lavaux. One night turns it into a rail stop with a castle visit squeezed around luggage. For a longer trip, compare Montreux room locations by the walk to the station as well as the lake. A lake-view room is worth more to someone spending a slow afternoon there than to someone leaving on the first train.
Use the country directory when choosing the wider shape of a European trip. For Switzerland itself, settle the number of bases before sorting hotel results by price. A cheap room that requires a new transfer every morning can spend the time you meant to save for the mountains.
Your first day: Zurich Airport to Lucerne
Land with Lucerne as the destination, not a chain of separate tickets. In the journey search, use Zürich Flughafen as the origin and Luzern as the destination. Those are the station names to save. Compare the displayed direct and connecting options after allowing time to clear arrivals. The point of the first day is to reach one base with enough energy left for a walk.
Reach the rail area
After baggage and customs, follow the train signs toward Airport Shopping and Check-in 3. The SBB travel centre is below Airport Shopping in that area. Its ticket counter is listed as open 06:30-21:00. Use it if you need help choosing between a pass and a ticket for the whole journey. 17
Choose the connection
For a Zurich overnight, trains to Zürich HB leave about every ten minutes and take about fifteen minutes. For Lucerne, keep Luzern as the destination in the journey search and follow that result’s platform and change instructions. A Zurich city stop is optional; it need not become an extra hotel night. 8
Choose the ticket’s flexibility
An ordinary SBB Point-to-Point Ticket lets you use the specified route and break the journey within its validity. For the intercity product, validity runs through 05:00 the next day. Local fare-network tickets have shorter rules. This is useful after a flight because your landing time and your platform arrival time are different things. 18
Reach the room, then go out lightly
At Luzern, make the hotel your first stop. Keep a map of the final walk offline, especially for an old-town address. Give the first afternoon to the lake and the streets near your room. Save the timed mountain outing for the next morning, when an early start feels like a choice.
If Lucerne is the first of several rail bases, compare starting the Swiss Travel Pass on arrival with paying separately for that day. The right answer depends on the last day you want covered. An eight-day pass started on a Saturday reaches the following Saturday; a Sunday airport trip falls outside that eight-day window. Write dates beside each overnight before buying.
Do you need a visa or ETIAS?
US and UK passport holders can make short tourist visits without a visa. Swiss rules still govern admission and the length of the stay. For most third-country short-stay visitors, the passport must have been issued within the previous ten years and remain valid for at least three months after leaving Schengen. These are the rules checked on 28 September 2026. 19
The usual short-stay ceiling is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area. Time in France, Italy, Germany and other Schengen countries uses the same allowance. A train ride into Switzerland starts another part of the trip, not a fresh visitor clock. Count the whole European itinerary before booking a long stay. 7
ETIAS is still a future requirement on 28 September 2026. The EU gives the last quarter of 2026 as its expected start period and says the exact launch date will be announced separately. There is no application to submit now. Use the official ETIAS site for the launch notice before a later trip. 20 EES border registration is separate and began its phased introduction on 12 October 2025. 7
For visitors who need a short-stay visa, the standard fees are EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged six to under twelve, subject to exemptions. Application centres can add a service fee. Apply up to six months ahead; SEM recommends at least two months. 7
| Applicant | Application fee (EUR) |
|---|---|
| Adult standard tariff | 90 |
| Child aged 6 to under 12, standard tariff | 45 |
Exemptions apply to some applicants. External-provider service charges are additional.
Choose flights with the same care as the itinerary’s mountain trains. For a Swiss-only holiday, Zurich arrival and Geneva departure can suit the Lucerne-to-Montreux route. With Zermatt at the end, compare both airports before committing. A slightly cheaper flight loses its appeal if reaching it forces you to cut the final mountain day or buy a new hotel night.
Which Swiss rail pass is worth buying?
Price the route before choosing the pass. The Swiss Travel Pass suits a holiday with frequent covered rail journeys and the freedom to switch plans. It includes network trains, buses and boats, plus local transport in more than 90 towns and cities. Panorama reservations and some mountain charges remain separate. Eligibility follows permanent residence outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein, not the passport’s nationality. 9
Table view: The extra days cost less than the first days
| Item | Value (CHF per person) |
|---|---|
| 3 days | 254 CHF per person |
| 4 days | 309 CHF per person |
| 6 days | 399 CHF per person |
| 8 days | 439 CHF per person |
| 15 days | 499 CHF per person |
Pass purchase prices only. Lodging, food and separately charged excursions or reservations are extra. Source: 1
| Duration | Pass price (CHF per person) |
|---|---|
| 3 consecutive days | 254 |
| 4 consecutive days | 309 |
| 6 consecutive days | 399 |
| 8 consecutive days | 439 |
| 15 consecutive days | 499 |
Food, lodging and extra reservations excluded.
The fifteen-day pass costs CHF 60 more than the eight-day version. For a ten-night route, compare both before buying. The extra ticket coverage leaves the rest of the holiday to pay for: rooms, meals and paid outings still add up. 1
The Swiss Half Fare Card costs CHF 150 for one month. Residents outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein can use it to buy half-price or reduced tickets on covered services. It buys a discount, so add the actual tickets to the card cost. This option deserves a close look when you plan fewer long transfers but several paid mountain outings. 2
A Saver Day Pass starts at CHF 52 in second class without Half Fare eligibility, or CHF 29 with it. Those are limited-availability prices for one selected day within the GA network area. Sales open up to six months ahead and close the day before travel. It stays valid until 05:00 the following morning; refunds after the initial purchase window are limited. 21
- For Lucerne plus Interlaken, compare ordinary fares with the pass after selecting the mountain outings. Two bases can mean fewer costly transfer days than the map first suggests.
- For Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux and Zermatt, list every transfer and paid excursion. Test the full itinerary against each pass, including travel to the departure airport.
- For a long stay in one valley, give the regional pass its own calculation. A national pass and a regional pass can overlap on days when you only use one of them.
Use the travel money collection alongside your own trip worksheet. The comparison needs the same dates, class and route in each column. Include a reservation on both sides when you intend to buy it either way. Count museum savings only for visits you want to make. A longer list of included attractions has little value if it pulls you away from the trip you came for.
Lucerne: choose one mountain day
Rigi is the simple starting point for pass holders. The Rigi Bahnen day ticket costs CHF 84 for adults or CHF 42 with Half Fare eligibility from 1 June 2026. The operator includes Swiss Travel Pass holders without an extra rail charge. Vitznau and Arth-Goldau are the two cogwheel railway gateways to put into your day plan. 10
Choose the mountain route after choosing the kind of day. From Lucerne, a lake journey paired with a railway ascent can be the main event. There is little reason to add another summit that afternoon. Give the return trip space for lunch and a stop, and keep the city evening free. Two different transport modes already make a full day feel varied.
Pilatus is a separate fare decision. In the May-November 2026 individual tariff, Kriens-Pilatus Kulm-Kriens costs CHF 84, or CHF 42 with the Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, Half Fare Travelcard or GA. The summer Golden Round Trip from Lucerne includes second-class boat travel and the bus back; it costs CHF 119.80, or CHF 59.90 with Swiss Half Fare Card eligibility. 22
| Ticket | Adult price (CHF) |
|---|---|
| Rigi Bahnen day ticket | 84; Half Fare 42; Swiss Travel Pass included |
| Kriens-Pilatus Kulm return | 84; eligible cards 42 |
| Golden Round Trip from Lucerne | 119.80; Swiss Half Fare Card 59.90 |
Rigi: from 1 June; travel to gateways extra. Pilatus return: May-November; CHF 42 with Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, Half Fare Travelcard or GA; Lucerne transfers extra. Golden Round Trip: Lucerne-Alpnachstad-Pilatus Kulm-Kriens-Lucerne, including second-class boat and bus.

Keep Pilatus’s two approaches distinct on an autumn trip. The Kriens gondola and aerial cableway close for maintenance from 19 October through 27 November 2026. The cogwheel railway uses Alpnachstad and has a different operating calendar. A ticket sold as a round trip relies on all its component services running that day. 23
With two nights in Lucerne, choose either Rigi or Pilatus as the main outing and leave the other as a weather alternative. With three nights, decide whether the second full day deserves another mountain or more time by the lake. Buying both excursions at once commits your money before you know which day has the view you want.
Interlaken, Jungfraujoch and Ballenberg
Let the Lucerne transfer count as an outing. The Luzern-Interlaken Express takes about one hour fifty minutes to Interlaken Ost and runs hourly. It accepts normal route tickets and is included with the Swiss Travel Pass. Brienz is a possible stop along the way. Choose the direct ride if you want the afternoon free at your next base. 24
For Jungfraujoch, one route runs from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald Terminal, then by Eiger Express gondola to Eigergletscher and by railway to the top. The operator recommends a full day. The return seat reservation costs CHF 10 and is compulsory from 1 May through 31 October 2026 for the Jungfrau Railway section. Book the travel ticket and any required timed reservation as one day’s plan. 15
The three-day Jungfrau Travel Pass costs CHF 210 for an adult or CHF 165 with an eligible reduction, including the Swiss Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass. It covers specified regional services such as Grindelwald-First, Harder Kulm and Schynige Platte, with seasonal operation still governing each outing. Jungfraujoch requires a connecting ticket. 25
For holders of a valid Jungfrau Travel Pass, the Eigergletscher-Jungfraujoch return connector is advertised from CHF 89 for 1 May-31 October 2026. The specific connector offer includes the paid seat reservation. Use that bundled price when comparing it with a separate ticket, so the reservation enters the calculation once. The connector must fall within the regional pass’s validity. 26
| Product | Price (CHF per person) |
|---|---|
| 3-day Jungfrau Travel Pass | 210; eligible reduced adult 165 |
| Jungfraujoch return connector | From 89, including seat reservation |
Regional-pass reductions include Swiss Half Fare Card and Swiss Travel Pass holders. The connector covers Eigergletscher-Jungfraujoch, 1 May-31 October 2026, and requires a valid Jungfrau Travel Pass. Buy the regional pass separately; a Swiss Travel Pass alone does not qualify for the connector.
Ballenberg gives the Oberland stay a different focus. The open-air museum charges CHF 32 adult admission at the ticket office and advertises a 10% online discount, making the adult online ticket CHF 28.80. Swiss Travel Pass admission is included. Its 2026 season runs 9 April-1 November, daily 10:00-17:00. Allow time outdoors between visits rather than treating it as a wholly indoor rain plan. 27
Reach Ballenberg by train to Brienz, then public bus to the West or East entrance. The museum also lists access via Brünig station. From an Interlaken base, a separate day avoids juggling luggage during the visit. For a longer stay, use Ballenberg between mountain days to change the pace without changing hotel. 28
- Three nights in Interlaken: use one full day for your first-choice mountain outing and the other for Ballenberg or a second local day.
- Four nights: keep one day open until the short-range forecast is useful. That extra night buys more freedom than a tight list of prepaid excursions.
- One night: choose a single aim. A late arrival followed by an early train to Montreux leaves very little time for the region.
Montreux and the Lavaux vineyards
Give the GoldenPass journey its own daylight hours. The direct GoldenPass Express links Interlaken Ost and Montreux in about three hours fifteen minutes. Treat the train as that day’s main outing, then settle into Montreux. This is a better place for an unhurried evening than for a race to fit a castle’s last entry. 11
| Purchase | Price (CHF per person) |
|---|---|
| Transport fare | 56 |
| Optional individual seat reservation | 20 |
| Fare plus reservation | 76 |
A valid Swiss Travel Pass covers the fare. The optional reservation costs extra.
| Visitor | Admission (CHF per person) |
|---|---|
| Adult aged 16+ | 15 |
| Swiss Travel Pass holder | Included |
Audio guides cost extra: CHF 6 rental or CHF 3 for the app.
| Period | Opening hours; last entry |
|---|---|
| April-September | 09:00-19:00; last entry 18:00 |
| October | 09:30-18:00; last entry 17:00 |
If the GoldenPass arrives late, visit Chillon the next morning.

For a walking day, the signed St-Saphorin-Lutry route is a useful way into Lavaux. The published walking time is three hours fifteen minutes, before stops. Both ends have railway access. Start with the whole walk only if that is how you want to spend the afternoon; a tasting and a long lunch need space beyond the walking time. 5
Lavaux Vinorama, at Route du Lac 2 in Rivaz, offers a three-wine Chasselas tasting from different producers for CHF 17 per person, with bread and puff pastry sticks. This is a concrete small outing to budget for, not a reason to rush through the vines. Its current notice closes the venue from 17:30 on 29 September 2026 for a private event. 31
The same provider offers a guided vineyard walk, cellar visit and tasting for CHF 75 per person, lasting about three hours from May through September. Online booking is required. Choose the guided version if you want the afternoon built around the people and work behind the wine. Choose the walking route when the walk itself is your main aim. 32
Zermatt and the Gornergrat decision
Reach Zermatt by rail and stay long enough for a second morning. The village restricts private cars to Täsch, including electric cars. Drivers park there and use the shuttle, which takes about twelve minutes, or an authorised transfer. For the train route, Visp is the gateway to the Matter Valley; the regional railway runs from there to Zermatt every half hour. 33, 34
Two nights give you one full day; three give the mountain view another chance. That difference matters more here than collecting another one-night stop. If the Matterhorn is the reason for coming, use the extra night in Zermatt before adding a distant city. If the rail journey is the main attraction, two nights can be a sensible part of a broader route.
The June-October Gornergrat hiking ticket costs CHF 108 for an adult without a discount. It covers Zermatt-Gornergrat uphill and Riffelberg-Zermatt downhill, with the middle stretch walked. Half Fare and GA holders are listed at CHF 54. Choose this product only when you want the walk; a full railway return is a different purchase. 35
| Journey | Price (CHF) |
|---|---|
| Gornergrat hiking ticket | 108; Half Fare/GA 54 |
| Glacier Express: Zermatt-Chur | 124 fare + 54 reservation = 178 |
Hiking ticket, June-October: Zermatt-Gornergrat uphill, Riffelberg-Zermatt downhill; walk Gornergrat-Riffelberg. Glacier Express: second class, one way, compulsory reservation; catering and travel beyond Chur extra.
For the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur, the adult second-class fare is CHF 124 plus a compulsory CHF 54 reservation. A valid Swiss Travel Pass covers the fare; the reservation costs extra. 3 First- and second-class reservations generally open up to 93 days ahead. For journeys from December onwards, the operator instead announces a mid-October booking opening. These are the published rules on 28 September 2026. 36
Zermatt-Chur is a different itinerary from the full Zermatt-St. Moritz train. Pick the endpoint that fits your next overnight. Continuing farther solely to say you rode the whole service can consume time intended for Zermatt itself. Conversely, if a long panorama ride is your first priority, shorten another base and give the rail day the space it needs.
The Gornergrat Railway lists a complete service break for construction from 2 through 14 November 2026. A Zermatt room during those dates still gives you a village stay, but the railway cannot be the centre of the plan. For a trip built around Gornergrat, choose dates outside the closure before comparing hotel prices. 37
Two routes you can copy
Count nights before counting sights. These plans give each main base at least one full day. Transfers consume part of a day even when the train ride is short, because checkout, luggage and the walk to the next room still take time. Start with the route that matches your available nights, then exchange one outing for another without adding a hotel move.
- 01Lucerne3 nights
Arrive and settle in on the first day. Use the next clear day for Rigi or Pilatus, then give the remaining day to Lucerne and the lake. Three nights let you shift the mountain outing by a day without changing the hotel. This is the gentler choice after a long flight.
→ Luzern-Interlaken Express to Interlaken Ost. 24 - 02Interlaken3 nights
Keep two full days for the Oberland. Choose one mountain outing, then Ballenberg or another local day according to your interests. Stay near Ost if rail departures shape both mornings. The aim is to return to the same room after each outing, with dinner free of another luggage transfer.
→ Train to Zurich for the final overnight; choose the connection for your date. - 03Zurich1 night
Put the final night near the departure side of the trip. An early flight favours an airport-area room; a later flight gives a central stay more purpose. Use the final afternoon for a small plan you can shorten without losing a prepaid excursion.
→ Train to Zürich Flughafen for departure.
With less time: With five nights, keep two in Lucerne, two in Interlaken and the final departure night. Choose one full-day outing in each base. Drop the second mountain idea before trimming both stays to one night.
For this week, the most useful money comparison is between the actual transfer fares plus your chosen mountain tickets and a pass covering those same days. Avoid filling the spare Lucerne day simply because an excursion appears in a pass’s benefits. A day by the lake can be the right use of time even after you have paid for broad transport coverage.
- 01Lucerne2 nights
Use arrival day for the city, then choose one full mountain or lake outing. This shorter Lucerne stay works when you arrive early enough to settle in without losing the evening. Give it a third night if jet lag is likely to consume the first full day.
→ Luzern to Interlaken Ost on the direct express. 24 - 02Interlaken3 nights
Spend two full days in the region before moving west. One can be the high-mountain day; leave the other for Ballenberg or a lower outing. Keeping the same base gives you a workable choice when the first morning’s weather favours a different plan.
→ GoldenPass Express from Interlaken Ost to Montreux. 11 - 03Montreux2 nights
Change the pace after the Oberland. Choose Chillon and lake time or a Lavaux day. If both are central to the trip, add a night here and take it from another stop only after deciding which outing you are giving up.
→ Train toward Visp, then Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to Zermatt. 34 - 04Zermatt3 nights
Two full days give Gornergrat room around the weather and leave time for the village. Book the hiking-ticket version only if the walk is part of the plan. This is the place to keep an extra night when the mountain view is the journey’s main purpose.
→ Glacier Express to Chur on an operating date, then onward train to Zurich. 4 - 05Zurich1 night
Finish the long rail day at the departure base. The flight belongs to the next day, with room for the airport journey. This also lets you enjoy the panorama train without watching the clock against an evening flight.
→ Zürich Flughafen on departure day.
With less time: With nine nights, choose Montreux or Zermatt as the third main base. Keep the departure night. With more time, add a night where you want a second full day instead of adding another place solely to lengthen the route.
For an October or November trip, replace the Glacier Express leg during its service break with an ordinary rail connection selected for your date. The hotel sequence can still work, but the last travel day changes character. For a slower ending, finish in Montreux and compare departure from Geneva. Route direction is a tool for making the flights fit the holiday.
Food, wine and the costs beyond the pass
Use real purchases to shape the budget. In SBB’s onboard menu, breakfast with a croissant, bread, butter, preserves and a hot drink costs CHF 12.40. A ham-and-Tête de Moine baguette with a soft drink costs CHF 13.50. These are useful prices for a catered train journey. They belong to that menu, so use your hotel and restaurant choices for the rest of the food plan. 38
| Purchase | Price (CHF per person) |
|---|---|
| SBB breakfast with hot drink | 12.40 |
| SBB ham-and-Tête de Moine baguette plus soft drink | 13.50 |
| Lavaux Vinorama three-Chasselas tasting with bread and pastry sticks | 17 |
| Lavaux guided vineyard walk, cellar visit and tasting, May-September | 75 |
SBB catering depends on the service and availability. The guided walk requires booking; travel to Rivaz is separate.
For a morning transfer from Lucerne, decide whether breakfast belongs in the hotel or on the train. Paying for both makes little sense when the departure is early. On a long panorama day, lunch is part of the experience if you want it; add it before deciding that a rail pass has settled the day’s costs. A transport ticket and a meal are separate purchases.
Switzerland Tourism describes restaurant tips as optional, with about 10% or rounding up customary in many restaurants. That gives you a useful convention without turning a tip into a compulsory surcharge. For a shared meal in Montreux or Zermatt, agree the total with your companions before dividing the bill. Keep any tip separate in the trip budget. 39
The currency is the Swiss franc. Some businesses accept euros and return change in francs, while cards are widely accepted. Keep the main budget in CHF so a pass price, a hotel quote and a meal can be compared directly. Carry a small amount of francs alongside a payment card for flexibility. 6
On arrival, the VAT-free allowance for goods for personal use or gifts is CHF 150 per person per day. Above that threshold, VAT applies to the total value. Separate quantity limits cover items including alcohol and some foods. This matters if Switzerland follows a shopping stop elsewhere in Europe; the land border still has customs rules. 40
- Room costs: compare the same dates, cancellation terms, breakfast and any separately listed local charges in Lucerne and your mountain base.
- Transport costs: add airport journeys, main transfers, local journeys, mountain supplements and the reservations you intend to use.
- Experience costs: add the chosen museum, tasting or guided outing, then leave space for meals on the long transfer days.
When should you go, and which trails suit you?
Choose the season around the outing that matters most. A railway holiday and a walking holiday can share the same towns but need different dates. For the route here, late spring through early autumn gives you the broadest set of the listed seasonal options. The exact choice still turns on the individual mountain line and trail, not a single national season label.
| Service or attraction | Planning consequence |
|---|---|
| Glacier Express: 11 October-4 December | Use an ordinary rail connection or change the panorama-train dates |
| Gornergrat Railway: 2-14 November | No train service; move a Gornergrat-focused stay |
| Pilatus Kriens cableways: 19 October-27 November | The Kriens approach is closed for maintenance |
| Ballenberg: season ends 1 November | Choose another outing for later visits |
These are published operating limits. Weather and operational notices can change individual departures.
Swiss trail signs make a useful first distinction. Yellow marks identify hiking trails; white-red-white marks identify mountain trails, which can be steep, narrow or exposed. White-blue-white marks identify alpine trails with greater demands on skill and equipment. Pick the category that matches the least experienced person in the group, then read the route’s distance and climb before setting off. 41
For a Gornergrat walking day, the descent between railway stations is still a mountain outing. A train ticket that leaves a section to be walked is a poor fit if anyone wants the certainty of riding both ways. Choose the whole-return railway option for that group, and make any short walk an optional part of the visit after seeing the conditions.
In winter, SLF issues its avalanche bulletin twice daily. Use the live avalanche bulletin when planning snow outings, alongside local closures. A marked summer path and a winter walking route are different choices. Keep a winter visit based on routes and services specifically open for that season. 42, 41
The hiking, skiing and diving collection is a separate planning starting point. For this route, choose a day you can shorten: Lucerne with a lake walk, Montreux with Chillon, or an Interlaken day that returns to the same room. A good alternative should be something you would enjoy, not a punishment for missing the summit.
Phone service and a trip with fewer barriers
Match the phone plan to your arrival and departure. Swisscom offers seven- and fifteen-day tourist bundles. A seven-day bundle leaves part of an eight-day visit uncovered. Compare your home carrier’s Switzerland allowance before paying for a second service. 12
| Duration | Price (CHF) |
|---|---|
| 7 days | 20 |
| 15 days | 40 |
Both include unlimited data in Switzerland at up to 50 Mbps download, calls within Switzerland, and texts in Switzerland and abroad. Activation is free. The data and calling allowance is domestic. See the activation timing below.
The eSIM period starts when the service connects to the Swisscom network and is used. A physical SIM is available through a Swisscom shop. Keep the rail QR codes and the hotel address saved offline before reaching Zurich Airport, so those essentials remain usable while you set up the connection. 12
On the Luzern-Interlaken Express, Zentralbahn identifies low-floor access and wheelchair spaces in coach 3. That is useful when choosing a specific journey, but the station change and the hotel entrance deserve the same attention. For a traveller using a chair or moving slowly with luggage, a short, direct room-to-platform route can matter more than a higher room category. 24
Ballenberg offers all-terrain electric wheelchair hire at its West entrance for CHF 25 per day, with advance reservation required. Choose the West entrance in the arrival plan if using that service. The museum is spread outdoors, so decide the visit’s length around the group’s comfort rather than trying to cover every part before the return bus. 27
Switzerland travel questions, answered.
Find the practical detail you need, or browse by topic.
Can I buy a Swiss Travel Pass without an SBB account?
Yes. Guest buyers receive an emailed QR code for inspection. Save it offline; guest-bought passes cannot appear inside the SBB Mobile account. 1
Do children need their own adult rail pass?
For children aged six to under sixteen travelling with a parent, add them when buying the Swiss Travel Pass to receive the free Swiss Family Card. It enables free accompanied travel under its rules. Children under six travel free. Price mountain reservations separately for the family before buying the outing. 9
Can I stop in Brienz between Lucerne and Interlaken?
Yes, Zentralbahn allows a stop on the route and runs the next service about an hour later. Use a ticket or pass whose validity permits your intended break. If the stop is only a short walk, keep the day simple; Ballenberg deserves enough time for the bus and the museum itself. 24
Is an audio guide included at Chillon?
Chillon lists the rented audio guide at CHF 6 and the app at CHF 3, separate from entry. Choose the format before arrival if you want to use your own phone. Bring headphones for an app-based visit and leave enough time to listen rather than rushing toward closing. 30
Can I take skis or a bicycle on the Glacier Express?
The operator excludes ski luggage, golf bags, oversized luggage, bicycles and electric scooters. It recommends at most one additional bag besides hand luggage. A trip combining the panorama train with bulky sports equipment needs a separate luggage arrangement before you buy the reservation. 3
How do I calculate whether the Half Fare Card pays off?
Add CHF 150 to the actual reduced ticket quotes and compare that sum with the full-price quotes for the same journeys. If every relevant fare were exactly halved, the mathematical break-even would be CHF 300 of full fares. Use actual quotes because the card also covers products with other reductions. 2
Should I add Zermatt to a seven-night Lucerne trip?
Only by making it a main base. For a week, choose Lucerne plus the Oberland or Lucerne plus Zermatt, with the final night placed for departure. Adding Zermatt as a one-night detour gives the mountain view one brief chance and adds another transfer to an already short holiday.
Can an electric rental car enter Zermatt?
No. The private-car restriction also applies to electric vehicles. Leave the car in Täsch and transfer to the shuttle or an authorised taxi. If Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux and Zermatt are the main stops, compare a rail-only itinerary before paying for a car that needs to be parked outside the final base. 33
Which stop should I cut from the longer itinerary?
Cut Montreux if high mountains are the main reason for the trip; cut Zermatt if you want lakes, wine and a gentler western finish. Keep the nights at the remaining bases. The useful question is which experience you most want, since both versions already have enough places for a full holiday.
Is a Saver Day Pass useful for a last-minute trip?
It must be bought by the day before travel, and the cheapest price is subject to availability. Compare the offered price with ordinary tickets for that day’s route. For a short local day, the national day pass can cost more than the journeys you actually plan to take. 21
