Bali rice terraces: Tegallalang, Jatiluwih or Sidemen

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.
Tegallalang, Gianyar Regency. The closest of the three to Ubud, about 20 minutes out, and the one with the widest spread of add-on fees. 1, 2 · Thomas Fuhrmann · Source · CC BY-SA 4.0

September 2026 entrance fees read from each site's own page, the add-ons that dwarf them, and the route that takes in all three from Ubud.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Jatiluwih is the only one of the three inside the UNESCO listing. The 2012 inscription names five component sites across 19,519.9 hectares, and Jatiluwih sits inside the subak area of Catur Angga Batukaru. Tegallalang and Sidemen sit outside all five. 3
  • A foreign adult pays IDR 75,000 at Jatiluwih's gate, about USD 4.19, and IDR 25,000 at Tegallalang's booth, about USD 1.40. Jatiluwih's tariff has held since 1 April 2025. 4, 5, 6
  • The add-ons cost more than the terrace. One swing at Alas Harum in Tegallalang runs IDR 197,860 to 373,735 at its stated 25%-off promotional rate, on top of its own IDR 70,000 entrance and before 17.25% tax and service; undiscounted, the same rides run IDR 263,813 to 498,313. 7, 6
  • Sidemen charges nothing for the view from the road. One community-run circuit, the Sidemen Rice Terrace Walk, asks IDR 25,000 for a loop of just over 2 km. 8
  • Budget the drive, not the ticket. A private car and driver out of Ubud runs about IDR 600,000 for up to eight hours, near USD 33.49, with every entrance fee on top. 9, 6

Three terraces, three different bills

Tegallalang's booths open at 07:00, ask IDR 25,000 and take it in cash. An hour's drive west, Jatiluwih's gate prints a tariff: IDR 75,000 for a foreign adult, IDR 25,000 for an Indonesian one. One to two hours east in Sidemen, the valley asks nothing at all. Three hillsides of terraced rice. Three completely different bills. 2, 4, 10

The gap between those sticker prices is small. The gap between what a morning costs is large, and it has little to do with the rice. At Tegallalang the booth fee starts a chain: parking, then a donation to the farmer whose bamboo bridge you cross, then a swing priced like a theme-park ride. At Jatiluwih one body sets one tariff and collects it at one gate. In Sidemen, most of the valley is roadside. 2, 4, 8

Every price below was read on 26 September 2026 from the operator's own page, and converted at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate of Rp 17,917.00 per US dollar for 25 September 2026. Signs and maps spell the first one Tegalalang and Tegallalang; both point at the same hillside. 6, 1

Which rice terrace should you visit?

The fees barely separate these three. Drive time and crowds do.

Pick on the drive, because every ticket here sits under USD 4.20. Tegallalang is about 20 minutes from central Ubud by Alas Harum's own reckoning. Jatiluwih is about an hour. Sidemen is roughly 33 km and one to two hours, depending on what you travel in. 1, 9, 10, 6

  • Closest, and the most add-ons: Tegallalang. Booths open 07:00 to 18:00 every day, IDR 25,000, cash. The steepest lower paths close often through the November to February rains. 2
  • One gate and one printed price: Jatiluwih. IDR 75,000 for a foreign adult, six marked trekking routes from 1.5 km to 5.5 km, and the World Heritage inscription. 4, 9, 3
  • Cheapest and quietest: Sidemen. Free from the road, or IDR 25,000 for a community-run loop of just over 2 km that takes under 30 minutes at a walk. 8
  • After the swing photograph: Tegallalang, with a bigger budget. Alas Harum's rides run IDR 197,860 to 373,735 each at its stated 25%-off promotional rate, on top of its IDR 70,000 entrance and before 17.25% tax and service; undiscounted, the same rides run IDR 263,813 to 498,313. 7

Each add-on is the lowest figure the site itself publishes: IDR 10,000 car parking with one IDR 10,000 farmer donation at Tegallalang, and the IDR 197,860 Single Angel Swing at Alas Harum, at its stated 25%-off promotional rate, plus trekking from IDR 450,000 at Jatiluwih and the IDR 25,000 walk in Sidemen. Alas Harum's 17.25% tax and service would lift its second point to USD 17.53. Converted at Rp 17,917.00 per US dollar. Source: 2, 4, 7, 8, 6

How much is the Tegallalang entrance fee?

IDR 25,000, about USD 1.40, buys the main walking paths and the viewpoints. Cash only, at the official booths, any day between 07:00 and 18:00. That is the figure most budgets stop at, and it is where the real bill starts. 2, 6

Much of the valley floor is working farmland in private hands. Cross a bamboo bridge or a strip of someone's terrace and the farmer who maintains it asks IDR 10,000 to 20,000. The swings are separate businesses again, priced by whoever owns the platform, from IDR 150,000 to 350,000 a person. Photo spots and nests set their own numbers on top. 2

Ranges are the fee page's own. Alas Harum prices its rides separately again, and its terms add 17.25% tax and service to every line. Converted at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR rate of Rp 17,917.00 per US dollar, 25 September 2026.

  1. Park where the attendant is

IDR 10,000 for a car, IDR 5,000 for a scooter, paid on the spot. 2

  2. Buy your ticket only at a marked booth

General admission is IDR 25,000 in cash. Cards are declined at the booths, and the fee page flags fake sellers near the parking. 2

  3. Carry a stack of IDR 10,000 and 20,000 notes

That is the currency of the bridges and the private crossings on the valley floor, one farmer at a time. Draw the cash in Ubud, and read what a foreign ATM takes before you pick a machine. 2

  4. Settle the swing question before you reach one

Independent platforms ask IDR 150,000 to 350,000. Alas Harum's Single Angel Swing is IDR 197,860 at 15 metres and its Super Extreme Swing IDR 219,844 at 25 metres, both above its IDR 70,000 gate. One session buys 15 pushes. 2, 7

  5. Ask which paths are open in the wet months

The steepest sections below the viewpoints close regularly from November to February, while the booths stay open every day of the year. 2

Jatiluwih vs Tegallalang: what the UNESCO listing changes

Broad green rice terraces stepping down a wide open valley at Jatiluwih, with forested ridges rising behind them
Jatiluwih, Tabanan Regency. These terraces sit inside the subak area of Catur Angga Batukaru, which UNESCO inscribed in 2012. 3 · Imacim · Source · CC BY-SA 4.0

The 2012 World Heritage inscription covers five component sites and 19,519.9 hectares, and Jatiluwih is inside one of them. The five are the supreme water temple of Pura Ulun Danu Batur, the subak area of the Pakerisan watershed, the subak area of Catur Angga Batukaru, the royal water temple of Pura Taman Ayun, and the terraces and irrigation works tied to those temples. Jatiluwih belongs to Catur Angga Batukaru. 3

Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: the Subak System as a Manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy, inscribed 2012

Tegallalang and Sidemen sit outside that list of five. Plenty of pages online hand Tegallalang the UNESCO label anyway. The official record names its five sites, and Tegallalang is absent from all of them. 3

What the inscription changes for a visitor is real but narrow. Jatiluwih carries the rules of a managed heritage site: a ticket for every visitor, no vehicles on the trekking paths, no picking rice or fruit, no litter. Tegallalang carries the rules of whoever owns the ground under your feet, which is why its fees arrive one bridge at a time. 4, 2

The two hillsides also differ in shape. Jatiluwih spreads wide across an open valley in Tabanan, about an hour from Ubud. Tegallalang drops steeply into a narrow one, 20 minutes from central Ubud. For a first trip, that drive time decides more than the listing does. 1, 9

What does a Jatiluwih ticket cost?

One gate, one printed tariff, four prices. Jatiluwih's own management body, the Badan Pengelola Daya Tarik Wisata Jatiluwih, publishes IDR 75,000 for a foreign adult and IDR 25,000 for an Indonesian adult, with children at IDR 50,000 and IDR 15,000. A foreign adult pays three times the domestic adult rate: 75,000 against 25,000. 4, 6

The 1 April 2025 change and the earlier figures come from two Tabanan news reports; the current rates also appear on the management body's own site. The Bali ID-card rate is in the second report, sourced to the destination's own Instagram account. Converted at Rp 17,917.00 per US dollar, 25 September 2026.

The fee rose, and the crowd rose with it. The tariff changed on 1 April 2025. Two days later, during the Lebaran holiday, the site's operations manager put daily visits near 2,500 people against a typical 300. That is 8.3 times an ordinary day, at a site that had just become more expensive. The operations manager said foreign visitors ran to about 15% of the domestic daily count during that surge; the domestic majority came mostly from Java. 5

The ticket buys the paths. Jatiluwih's own site then sells trekking from IDR 450,000, cycling from IDR 470,000, and a nightly light show called Menyala Jatiluwih from IDR 50,000. Six marked trekking routes run from 1.5 km, about 45 to 60 minutes, out to 5.5 km at three and a half to four hours. Checking a fee against what it actually buys is the same habit as reading a trekking permit before you pay. 4, 9

Sidemen valley: the one with no gate

Terraced rice fields filling a green valley at Sidemen in east Bali, with palms and a ridge line beyond
Sidemen, Karangasem Regency. Most of this valley is free to look at from the road, and only one community-run track charges a fee. 8 · Adimelali Bali · Source · CC BY-SA 3.0

Sidemen charges nothing for its best view, which is the one from the road. The valley in Karangasem Regency is terraced almost end to end, with pull-offs where cars stop. There is no gate, no booth and no tariff for any of that. The cost of Sidemen is the drive. 8, 10

One paid exception earns its money. The Sidemen Rice Terrace Walk, a community-run circuit, charges IDR 25,000 at a wooden kiosk about five minutes' drive from the village's main hotel strip, plus IDR 2,000 if you pay by card. The loop runs a little over 2 km and takes under 30 minutes without stops. The fee maintains the track and goes to the community that built it. 8

The track is new. A writer who first walked this valley in 2012 found the same ground open and unmarked; returning in July 2026, they found the kiosk and a marked circuit in place. IDR 25,000 is the whole of that trade. 8

Ubud to Sidemen is roughly 33 km, one to two hours on winding road. A private driver one way runs IDR 400,000 to 600,000. A rented scooter is IDR 70,000 to 100,000 a day. Bemo and ojek together cost IDR 50,000 to 100,000, with transfers that can stretch past three hours. If the coast is where you head next, a diving month in Amed prices a longer stay. 10, 6

How do you see all three from Ubud?

One car, one driver, eight hours: about IDR 600,000, or USD 33.49. Bali Indo Tour prices a private air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver, for one to six people, at that rate out of Ubud, with extra hours at IDR 80,000. Bali Travelo's general day rate is from USD 40 a car for ten hours and up to 120 km, then USD 5 per extra 20 km. Entrance fees sit outside both. 9, 12, 6

What is subak, and why does it matter here?

All three hillsides run on the same water system, in use since at least the 9th century and still run by the farmers themselves. Subak is a cooperative arrangement of canals and weirs, organised around water temples. Bali has roughly 1,200 of these water collectives. Between 50 and 400 farmers share the supply from a single source. 3

The philosophy UNESCO names in the inscription is Tri Hita Karana, the harmony of the spiritual, human and natural realms. On the ground it is a water-sharing agreement, kept by the households who farm the slope: hundreds of holdings drawing on one source, through canals and weirs, under the water temples. The terraces are the visible part of that arrangement. 3

Jatiluwih carries the inscription. Tegallalang and Sidemen carry the same system without it. All three are working farmland, and the households who farm them set their own terms on their own land. That is the plain explanation for Tegallalang's patchwork of fees, and the reason an IDR 20,000 note handed over at a bamboo bridge goes to the person who maintains it. 3, 2

Arrival, visas and the rest of the country sit in MMT's Indonesia travel guide. For the terraces, the planning is short: pick one, pick the hour, and carry rupiah. 2

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book Bali rice terrace tickets in advance?

No advance booking exists for Tegallalang's booths, which take cash at the gate between 07:00 and 18:00. Jatiluwih sells its entrance and its activities through its own site. For the terraces themselves, arriving with rupiah is the whole process. 2, 4

Which Bali rice terrace has the fewest people?

Sidemen, on the numbers available. Jatiluwih's operations manager put a typical day near 300 visitors and a 2025 holiday peak near 2,500. Tegallalang sits about 20 minutes from Ubud, on the short list of stops every Ubud day trip can reach. Sidemen has no visitor count to quote, because it has no single gate. 5, 1, 8

Is Tegallalang a UNESCO World Heritage site?

No. The 2012 inscription names five component sites, and Tegallalang is not one of them. Many booking pages label it UNESCO anyway; the label belongs to Jatiluwih. 3

Can I fly a drone over Jatiluwih?

With prior authorisation and a surcharge, yes. The site states two different figures in two places: IDR 300,000 in a banner notice and IDR 150,000 in its visitor regulations, about USD 16.74 and USD 8.37. Get the figure confirmed at the gate before you fly. 4, 6

How much is a Bali swing at the rice terraces?

Independent operators around Tegallalang charge IDR 150,000 to 350,000 a person, and Alas Harum's rides run IDR 197,860 to 373,735 at its stated 25%-off promotional rate, above its own IDR 70,000 entrance. Undiscounted, the same rides run IDR 263,813 to 498,313, and 17.25% tax and service is added at the counter either way, so the till figure is higher than the sign. 2, 7, 6

Do children pay at the Bali rice terraces?

At Jatiluwih, yes, at a lower rate: IDR 50,000 for a foreign child and IDR 15,000 for an Indonesian one. Tegallalang's published fee page names one general admission of IDR 25,000, with no separate child rate. 4, 2

What is the best time of day to walk the terraces?

Early. Tegallalang's booths open at 07:00, about 20 minutes from central Ubud, and Alas Harum runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jatiluwih is about an hour out, so a mid-morning arrival there means leaving Ubud soon after breakfast. 2, 1, 9

Are the terrace paths walkable in the rainy season?

Partly. Tegallalang's steepest lower paths close regularly from November to February, while the booths stay open every day of the year. Ask at the booth which sections are open before you pay. Jatiluwih's six marked routes range from 1.5 km to 5.5 km, so a shorter one is always available. 2, 9
