Indonesia travel guide
A Java and Bali route with room for temple days, Balinese art and an Amed stay, plus the arrival costs and transfers to plan first.
- Use 13 nights for the proposed Java and Bali route, or seven nights for Bali alone. Keep northern Sumatra and Raja Ampat as separate trip choices.
- For each eligible visitor who owes the Bali levy, the visa and levy base totals IDR 650,000 on 24 September 2026, excluding card or bank charges. 1, 2
- Search Gambir to Yogyakarta for the Java train, then YIA to DPS for the flight to Bali; confirm the actual service before locking in rooms. 3, 4
- Put the last Bali night in Sanur and book the airport transfer separately. Our plan leaves the Amed transfer on the day before departure.

Give Java and Bali 13 nights and there is room for a train journey, a full day at the temples and several mornings with nowhere to check out. This guide puts those days in order: Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Ubud and Amed, then a final night in Sanur. The night counts are our proposed plan; you can copy the route or keep just the Bali week.
In Yogyakarta, start with gudeg made from young jackfruit. In Ubud, make time for the paintings and sculpture at Museum Puri Lukisan, including work by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad. Those are good reasons to linger between transfers. 5, 6
The essentials, at a glance.

Which islands belong on your first trip?
Java and Bali make a satisfying first pair. Use Java for the Jakarta to Yogyakarta rail journey and the temple visits, then change pace in Bali. The connection we propose is a flight from Yogyakarta International Airport to Denpasar, followed by a road transfer to Ubud. Check the flight against your dates before committing to the route. 3, 4
Begin with what you want a whole day to contain. If the answer is art, a long lunch and a walk back to the room, give Ubud the spare night. If it is time by the water, keep Amed. If the temples are the reason you are coming, protect the Yogyakarta stay and trim Bali. That choice makes the hotel search much simpler.
| Trip and nights | Bases |
|---|---|
| Java and Bali: 13 | Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Ubud, Amed, Sanur |
| Bali only: 7 | Ubud, Amed, Sanur |
| Northern Sumatra: 7 suggested | Medan and Tuktuk |
| Raja Ampat: separate trip | Sorong, Waisai and island lodging |
Java and Bali: train across Java, then fly to Bali. Bali only: two main stays and a final departure night. Northern Sumatra: allow road and ferry days. Raja Ampat: match boats to lodging and flights. See the itineraries below and the separate-island section for gateway details.
For two people with different interests, agree on one shared anchor each. A temple day and several nights in Amed fit this plan without demanding that every afternoon be spent together. Keep at least one blank day in the longer stay. It is useful for a second visit, a missed connection or simply a late breakfast.
Count the arrival day honestly. A night booked after a long flight buys sleep, but it adds little sightseeing time. The same applies to the day you change islands. Mark both as travel days on your calendar before adding excursions. If the calendar already looks crowded, remove a stop while the rooms are still easy to change.
Two routes you can copy
Count nights before booking activities. The longer plan uses five lodging stops across 13 nights. It puts the largest share of the Java stay in Yogyakarta and saves three nights each for Ubud and Amed. These are MMT allocations, designed for a first visit with some unscheduled time. Shift a night toward the place that matters most to you.
- 01
- 02
- 03Ubud3 nights
Give the art museum a rested morning and leave another day for your own pace. Stay central if you want the room to be part of the day.
→ Road transfer to Amed on day 10. - 04Amed3 nights
Unpack for two full days. Keep water activities conditional on the local briefing and use the other time for a shore-based stay.
→ Travel by road to Sanur on day 13, before the day of your flight. - 05Sanur1 night
Spend the last evening on Sanur’s paved beachfront path, with dinner nearby. Our final-night stop puts the Amed road journey before departure day. 17
→ Booked car to Ngurah Rai Airport, DPS.
With less time: With fewer nights, use the Bali-only plan below. If Java is your priority, keep Jakarta and Yogyakarta and save Bali for another journey.
On this schedule, day 3 belongs to the train and day 7 belongs to the flight. Resist filling either with a prepaid evening event. A late arrival then costs you only a quiet dinner, not the activity you crossed the country to see. Put your most important booking on a day when you wake up in the same place.
- 01Ubud3 nights
Begin with one art visit and one open day. After a late flight, keep the following morning free so the week starts at a comfortable pace.
→ Arrive at DPS and use a booked car; transfer by road to Amed after night 3. - 02Amed3 nights
Keep the middle of the week for the coast. Stay in one room and give any planned water activity more than one possible day.
→ Road transfer to Sanur after night 6. - 03Sanur1 night
Use Jalan Danau Tamblingan as the starting point for the last-night room search. The final night separates the Amed road journey from your flight day. 17
→ Car to DPS on day 8.
With less time: For a gentler week, split seven nights between Ubud and Sanur. Drop Amed if changing hotels twice would take more energy than the coast adds.
A late first arrival can justify sleeping near the airport and moving onward after breakfast. Take that night from Ubud, or lengthen the trip. Adding an arrival hotel without removing a night elsewhere changes the departure date.
Java: a train, temple days and gudeg
Search Sosrowijayan for a practical Yogyakarta base. It sits within Sosromenduran beside Malioboro, close to Tugu station, with accommodation in the area. That makes it a useful place to start a hotel search for this rail-led trip. Some Malioboro-area hours restrict car access, so agree on a pickup point your driver can reach. 18
For a meal near the Yogyakarta base, look at Slasar Malioboro on Jalan Pasar Kembang. The tourism ministry places it between Tugu station and Malioboro and describes food stalls there. It gives the train-arrival evening a clear destination without adding a cross-city outing. Check the walk from your chosen room before booking. 18
Prambanan is a ninth-century Hindu temple complex whose largest temple is dedicated to Shiva. The visit is made on foot. Borobudur uses managed access for climbing the structure; the operator page checked on 24 September 2026 lists daily climbing between 09:00 and 17:00 WIB. Reserve the current product and available slot through the Borobudur operator. 19, 13

- Give Borobudur its own day in this route. Set the departure time around the ticket, then leave space for lunch and the return trip.
- Put Prambanan on a different day if you want time to look closely. Avoid turning both temple visits into a race between car parks.
- Keep the city day between them. Use it for a meal in Wijilan or Barek, the Yogyakarta areas the tourism ministry identifies with gudeg. 5
For a driver quote, write down the hotel, temple, date and planned return point. Request the total for that route, with waiting time, parking and any extra stops identified. If the quote includes admission, ask for the ticket name and booking confirmation. A transport booking and a structure-climbing reservation solve different parts of the day.
For Jakarta’s full day, start with Kota Tua. The city identifies a compact group there that includes Jakarta History Museum, Museum Bank Indonesia and Wayang Museum. Choose one for a longer visit after checking its current hours; leave time to explore the area around it. 20
Kota Tua’s core restricts motor traffic. Choose a reachable drop-off at its edge and explore the museum group on foot; ask your hotel about access if walking distance matters. This city day pairs well with the two-night Jakarta stay, before the route continues to Yogyakarta. 20
Bali: Ubud, Amed and a final Sanur night
Choose central Ubud if you want to return to your room between visits. The town has accommodation in its centre and farther out, and the surrounding terrain is hilly. A room advertised under Ubud can suit a very different day from a room in town. Compare its exact map pin with the places you plan to visit. 16
Museum Puri Lukisan gives the art day a clear starting point. Its collections include Balinese painting and sculpture and works by I Gusti Nyoman Lempad. Look for the artist names and the collection information as you move through the visit. Check current hours directly before fixing the day around it. 6
For the Ubud stay, pick one main outing each day. Follow it with time you can spend as you please: a meal, another gallery or a return to the room. Buying several transfers for scattered stops can make a day feel full before you have spent much time anywhere. Put the sites on a map together before paying for a car.

For the Amed stay, compare Jemeluk Bay and Lipah Beach. The tourism ministry identifies both for shore snorkeling. Use those names to narrow the lodging search, then ask a local operator about the entry point, sea conditions and a session suited to your ability. If diving is the priority, choose the operator before the room and agree on equipment transport. 21
Read the room layout as closely as the beach description. At Amed Lodge by Sudamala, the Tulamben cottage has its bedroom upstairs and bathroom downstairs, according to the property page checked on 26 September 2026. That arrangement matters for night-time bathroom trips. Ask for the exact cottage plan and access photographs before paying, especially if stairs are difficult. 22
Sanur has a paved beachfront path and coastal restaurants; Jalan Danau Tamblingan is its main street. Use that area as the starting point for the last-night hotel search. Our reason for placing it here is practical: complete the Amed transfer before departure day, then use a separate airport car. 17
Your first arrival: from airport to a settled evening
Save your first hotel address before boarding. Keep one offline folder per traveller with visas, receipts, transport tickets and hotel bookings; share a copy with your companion. Add the pickup map, meeting sign and driver contact. For the longer route, arrive through Jakarta for the Thamrin stay; for the Bali week, continue from DPS to your first booked room.
Prepare a small arrival folder
Keep the passport, visa record and onward booking together. British-citizen guidance requires proof of an onward or return journey. Complete the free All Indonesia declaration in the 72 hours before arrival and save its confirmation. Other passport holders should check their own entry requirements too. 9
Clear the airport before starting the next journey
Follow the immigration, baggage and customs signs for your arrival. Once through, check that you have every bag and document. If delayed, contact the hotel or driver before making a replacement transfer booking.
Jakarta: airport train, then the final hotel transfer
The operator route table links Soekarno-Hatta Airport with BNI City and Manggarai. For our central hotel plan, compare a train to BNI City plus a hotel car or taxi with a car all the way. Search the actual date on the KCI airport train portal. 23, 24
Bali: use the pickup point for your terminal
For an international arrival at Ngurah Rai, Grab lists its GrabCar Lounge as a pickup point. Its app quotes GrabCar fares before booking; GrabTaxi uses different pricing. Enter the complete hotel destination, follow the current app directions and match the car details. 25
Make the first evening easy
Go to the room, put valuables away and choose dinner nearby. Before splitting up, test calls or messages with your companion and agree on a meeting place in case a phone runs flat.
At Jakarta, the airport rail arrival and the later train to Yogyakarta are separate journeys. Our route uses Gambir for the latter. Keep that station name on the day 3 calendar entry so you book the correct hotel pickup. Avoid buying the first onward train that appears simply because its departure city says Jakarta. 3
For a family or a group with large bags, compare the whole door-to-door cost. The train comparison includes each person’s ticket and the final transfer. The car comparison needs enough seats and luggage space for everyone. For a solo traveller with a light bag, the train and a short onward ride can be the simpler plan to organise.
What entry documents do you need?
Match the visa to your passport and purpose. The B1 visitor visa is for eligible nationalities and allows one entry with an initial stay of up to 30 days. Immigration’s B1 information requires at least six months of validity on an ordinary passport. Check the official visa portal for your nationality and document type before payment. 8
Read three dates separately: your planned arrival, the visa’s last permitted date of use and the end of your authorised stay. Put the last one in your calendar after admission. Keep the return booking consistent with it. If you change the trip, deal with the permission first and the extra hotel nights second.
- The visa handles national entry permission. Each child needs a separate visa under the visitor-visa guidance. 8
- The All Indonesia arrival declaration is free and separate from the visa. Use the official arrival form within the stated pre-arrival window. 9
- The Bali levy is a separate provincial charge for liable foreign tourists. Check exemptions and save the voucher through Love Bali. 2
For a longer stay, plan an office visit. Ngurah Rai Immigration’s notice, effective 29 May 2025 and checked on 24 September 2026, requires online documents followed by a photograph and interview at an immigration office, including for visa-on-arrival holders. Leave space in your route to attend. 26
Tourist entry is not general work permission. The UK’s entry guidance flags volunteering, influencer work and commercial online content as activities that can require a different visa. If any of those describes the trip, resolve the visa category before booking. 9
How much should you set aside for arrival?
Budget IDR 1,300,000 for two eligible visitors who both owe the Bali levy. The base charges below were checked on 24 September 2026. 1, 2
Table view: Visa and Bali levy: party totals
| Item | Value (IDR) |
|---|---|
| One traveller | 650,000 IDR |
| Two travellers | 1,300,000 IDR |
Excludes card and bank charges, transport, phone service and other trip costs. Source: 1, 2
| Charge and party size | Base amount (IDR) |
|---|---|
| Visa: one traveller | 500,000 |
| Bali levy: one traveller | 150,000 |
| Combined: one traveller | 650,000 |
| Visas: two travellers | 1,000,000 |
| Bali levies: two travellers | 300,000 |
| Combined: two travellers | 1,300,000 |
For B1-eligible visitors who owe the Bali levy; see the entry section for eligibility and exemptions. Excludes card/bank fees. IDR; no conversion.
The useful budget decision is what remains after those charges. Put them in a fixed-cost line, then price the transport and rooms for your actual party. A couple shares some room and vehicle costs, while these visitor charges remain per person. Keep the optional phone purchase separate so it stays visible as a choice.
| Product | Advertised price (IDR) |
|---|---|
| Tourist Prepaid Card | 150,000 |
Includes 25GB data on all networks and 25 voice minutes. Only for international tourists, with passport and IMEI validation. Confirm validity, tax treatment, stock, activation and final checkout total; the price FAQ leaves validity and tax treatment unstated. Optional and excluded from the visa-and-levy chart. No currency conversion.
Build the rest of the trip cost from bookings you can compare: the total room bill, each travel day and the few activities that need reservations. For a shared car, divide the vehicle quote only after confirming the group fits. For flights, compare the fare with your bags included. Keep cancellation terms beside the price, where you can see them.
When the total is too high, first test one fewer hotel move. Reprice the transfer you remove and the night you add at the remaining base. Then choose where a better room would change your day: a place where you expect to rest for an afternoon deserves more thought than a late arrival followed by an early checkout.
Cash still matters. The tourism ministry describes broad card use in cities and tourism centres, but smaller shops and remote areas can require cash. Carry enough for the next stage, and check the ATM network on your own card before depending on it. 7
Meals, phone service and everyday spending
Start the Yogyakarta food day with gudeg. Young jackfruit, palm sugar and coconut milk form its base. Common accompaniments include chicken, egg, beef skin, tofu and tempeh, so a vegetable main ingredient tells you little about the complete plate. Wijilan and Barek are useful areas to begin looking. 5
Order for the meal you want, not for a photograph of a full spread. Point to the dishes you would like and confirm the portion and price before the plate is assembled. If you have a dietary restriction, describe the ingredients you need excluded, including those in sauces and stock. Let the cook tell you what can be prepared.
In Bali, look for sate lilit: a minced fish or chicken mixture with grated coconut and lime, wrapped around lemongrass and grilled. The tourism ministry points to Sanur’s beachside warungs as places to look for it. Ask which protein the kitchen uses, then choose the sides separately if you have dietary needs. 28
Phone setup is best finished before the first long transfer. Telkomsel restricts its Tourist Prepaid Card to international tourists and validates passport and IMEI details. Take the handset you will use, and ask staff to demonstrate that data works before leaving the seller. 12
On the separate northern Sumatra route, make the Medan city day a chance to try soto Medan. Its coconut-milk broth uses lemongrass, turmeric and coriander, with chicken or beef, potato and boiled egg among the usual contents. Order it with rice and ask for sambal separately if you prefer to control the heat. 29
In Jakarta, Mandiri e-money is a prepaid transport option available to customers and noncustomers of the bank. Its listed uses include MRT Jakarta, commuter rail and Transjakarta. Buy and load a card through a supported channel if those are the networks you plan to use. Keep its balance separate from your airport-train booking. 30
Use a simple daily note for shared spending: amount, purpose and who paid. Record a car ride once for the group and personal purchases under the individual. This makes the final settlement easier and helps you see which choices are consuming the trip budget while there is still time to change them.
Book the long journeys, then the short ones
Start with the connection that fixes the date. For this route, that is the Java train and the flight to Bali. Garuda’s booking pages market YIA to DPS; check your chosen itinerary for the actual airport, any connection and baggage allowance. The room sequence should follow the ticket you can buy. 4
Yogyakarta station connects with Yogyakarta International Airport by airport train. The current KCI airport train booking site includes a Yogyakarta option. Search there for the travel date and keep the station-to-airport journey separate from the flight’s check-in deadline. Allow time at both ends to reach the correct platform or terminal. 15, 24
| Leg | Transport to price |
|---|---|
| Jakarta to Yogyakarta | Car to Gambir, train, hotel transfer |
| Yogyakarta to Ubud | Train or car to YIA, flight to DPS, car |
| Ubud to Amed | Booked car |
| Amed to Sanur | Booked car |
| Sanur to DPS | Airport car |
Each leg runs hotel to hotel, or to the departure terminal. Jakarta: confirm stations and luggage handling. Yogyakarta: include bags, flight check-in and Bali pickup. Ubud: specify bags, stops and waiting. Amed: plan a daytime transfer and a reachable hotel entrance. Sanur: give flight, pickup and terminal details. MMT planning checklist; obtain date-specific quotes and transfer times.
Before paying for a private car, ask for the total in writing. Name the passengers, bag count and each stop. Agree on whether the driver waits and what happens if you run late. If a temple or restaurant stop changes the route, price it before the journey. Keep the written plan available to both the driver and your group.
For rail, make the passport spelling on the booking match the document you carry. Choose a departure that leaves room for a calm breakfast and the hotel-to-station journey. Saving a little on a very early service has less appeal if it forces an extra transfer or leaves everyone too tired to enjoy the next place.
Work back from the homeward flight when pricing the final room. In the Bali route, that means Sanur after Amed; in the Sumatra route, Medan after Tuktuk. Keep that night in the initial budget so a late change to the boat or road plan has room to be resolved.
Seasons, health and safe days out
Use the season to shape the plan, then use the forecast to run it. The tourism ministry describes April to October as broadly drier in Java and Bali and November to March as wetter. Regional patterns differ. Give an outdoor visit another possible day, and keep a museum or a restful afternoon available when weather changes. 10
For any boat booking, check the forecast for the actual crossing and ask who makes the cancellation decision. FCDO warns that ferry safety standards vary. Choose an operator that can explain the vessel, lifejackets and weather procedure, and leave enough slack to decline a departure. 31
A clear cancellation policy is useful before the trip, when it costs nothing to choose another operator. Save the policy with the booking. If the answer to a weather question is only that the boat always runs, choose a different plan. One shore day is easier to absorb than a rushed connection at sea.
FCDO lists 118 for an ambulance and advises immediate medical help after an animal bite or scratch. It also says tap water is unsafe to drink and recommends insurance and accessible funds for treatment and evacuation. Arrange personal pre-travel health advice for your route and medical needs. 11
- Save the insurer’s assistance number with the policy number, and give a copy to your companion.
- Pack the supplies you rely on in your hand luggage and check the rules for your own medicines before travel.
- Tell an activity operator about needs that affect the plan before paying, so you can agree on a suitable version of the day.
Scooter hire needs a licence and insurance check before a rental decision. FCDO also flags methanol poisoning and changing volcano restrictions. Read its current safety advice before the trip, then follow local closures and activity briefings. 31
Build an access plan around actual doors and vehicles. If steps or walking distance matter, request current photographs of the entrance, bathroom and path from the road. For a temple visit, establish what you can reach and where you can rest. A shorter visit with reliable access is a better use of a day than an ambitious booking you cannot use.
Northern Sumatra and the eastern islands
Give northern Sumatra its own week. Lake Toba offers a different route from Java and Bali, with Tuk Tuk on Samosir as a lodging base. Tomok is associated with ulos textiles. Begin with the base and your interests there, then work back to the gateway you can reach. 32

The ministry describes the road journey from Medan to Parapat, followed by passenger ferries to Tuktuk near the hotel area. Tuktuk has small hotels and homestays. Choose the lodging before arranging the final boat leg so you know which pier and onward transfer the booking needs. 33
- 01Medan2 nights
Allow an arrival night and a city day before the road journey. This keeps the first lake transfer off the long-haul arrival day.
→ Arrange road transport to Parapat and the onward ferry to Tuktuk. 33 - 02Tuktuk, Samosir4 nights
Stay long enough to unpack, spend time by the lake and make a considered visit to Tomok. Leave one day open for your own interests.
→ Return by ferry and road with the connections confirmed for the travel date. - 03Medan1 night
Return before the flight day. Use the evening to settle any shared spending and prepare the airport journey.
→ Booked airport transfer.
With less time: With fewer nights, reduce the first Medan stay if the flight timing works. Keep the final gateway night and avoid squeezing the lake stay into a single full day.
In Tomok, take time over a textile purchase. Ask the seller about its maker, material and use, and pay for an explanation or demonstration when it is offered as a service. Buy something you want to keep. The purpose of the visit can be a careful conversation and a single purchase, rather than a sequence of photographs.
For an eastern-island trip, Raja Ampat requires a different set of connections. Sorong is the gateway for the Waisai transfer, with the onward journey tied to your lodging. The tourism ministry notes limited ATM access. Sort payment and the final boat arrangement before committing to the stay. 34
Start that booking with the island lodging or boat operator, then match the flights to the proposed transfer days. Get meals, drinking water, equipment and any activity or permit charges listed in the quote. Keep an arrival buffer at the gateway and a return buffer before the international flight. Reprice the whole route if one link changes.
Check security advice by place. FCDO identifies particular risks in Highland Papua and Central Papua. Read the regional advice for the provinces on your route; assess Raja Ampat using advice for its own location. 35
Visiting on your hosts’ terms
Let hosts set the terms of a visit. Pay guides for their time, ask before photographing people and follow the rules of worship spaces and homes. A ticket for a public attraction gives you access to that attraction; treat any invitation beyond it as a separate conversation. Accept a closed door without trying to negotiate a more personal encounter.
If you extend the trip to Lombok, distinguish public visitor activities from a community’s own work. AMAN reported youth mapping training at Sabuk Belo in East Lombok from 5 to 11 September 2023. The participants were developing their own community skills. Use visitor channels a community chooses to offer, and respect who decides when and how guests can take part. 36
If the wider trip also includes it, the Thailand travel guide can help you compare how to use the remaining nights. Keep the Indonesia route as a complete trip first. The choice to spend another afternoon in a place you already like is often easier to enjoy than a new airport journey.
Indonesia travel questions, answered.
Find the practical detail you need, or browse by topic.
Can I visit Java and Bali in a week?
For seven nights, choose the Bali itinerary or a Java trip centred on Yogyakarta. Combining both would use much of the week for the arrival, an intercity journey and an island change. If the temples are your main reason to travel, spend the week on Java and give Bali its own visit.
Should I take Jakarta’s airport train with children?
Does a child need a separate visitor visa?
Yes, the visitor-visa guidance says each child needs a separate visa. Prepare a document folder for each traveller and check the child’s passport details against the application. A family booking for flights or a shared hotel room does not combine immigration permissions. 8
When does the B1 stay count start?
The immigration office describes the initial maximum 30-day stay as counted from the date of arrival. Use the admitted stay date when planning departure, and ask immigration to resolve any discrepancy in the record promptly. Keep that date separate from the visa’s deadline for first use. 1
Can we share one tourist SIM?
You can plan around one connected phone and any hotspot function your device and purchased plan permit, but test that setup first. Two separate plans are more useful if you intend to split up; ask the seller about hotspot terms, validity and the final price.
Can I combine both temple visits in one day?
Our four-night Yogyakarta plan puts Borobudur and Prambanan on separate days so each has room for the journey and a proper visit. If you choose a combined outing, make the confirmed Borobudur slot the fixed point and get the complete route from the driver before paying.
Is gudeg suitable for a vegetarian?
The jackfruit base uses coconut milk and palm sugar, but the usual meal can include chicken, egg and beef skin. Ask about the whole plate, sauces and stock, then select the accompaniments you can eat. Tofu or tempeh on the menu alone does not answer how the meal is cooked. 5
What should LGBTQ+ travellers check?
FCDO says same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Aceh and describes discrimination elsewhere. Check the rules and local advice for the exact destination, particularly when travelling beyond the Java and Bali route. Choose accommodation where you are comfortable discussing room arrangements privately before payment. 31
What should I do after a monkey scratch?
Seek medical help immediately, even if the mark looks small. FCDO identifies rabies in wild and domestic animals. Contact the insurer’s assistance service while arranging care, and keep the location and time of the incident in a note you can show the clinician. 11
Is this route suitable if I cannot manage many steps?
Use the same bases, with a slower version of the days. Prioritise room and bathroom access, vehicle entry and the exact parts of an attraction you want to reach. Ask for current photographs and a written access description before a nonrefundable booking; allow a companion or assistant’s costs in each quote.
