What happens between customs and the curb
You clear customs, and the arrivals hall goes straight to work on you. Branded booths line the stretch past the exit. The people behind them are well dressed, they greet you warmly, and they ask where you are staying. Travelers gave that stretch a nickname, the Shark Tank. What it sells is a timeshare presentation: a free or cut-price ride in exchange for 90 minutes that a transfer company's own account of these desks puts at four to seven hours. 7
Walk through it. Your ride into town costs somewhere between $9.00 and $45.00, and every one of those prices sits on a page you can read before you fly. Four options carry almost all of the traffic: the ADO coach, a shared shuttle van, a private car and an airport taxi. This page prices all four to the Hotel Zone, to Playa del Carmen and to Tulum. 3, 5, 1, 4
Pesos come first here, because pesos are what ADO and the city actually charge. Dollar figures convert at the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate of 17.2454 pesos to the dollar, published on 18 September 2026. Shuttle, private-car and taxi-broker prices arrive already in dollars, quoted that way by the companies themselves, and every figure below was read from the seller's own page on 25 September 2026. 2, 3, 4, 5
Walk past the booths
The desks that greet you right after customs sell presentations. Real airport information counters and airline desks are signed as such and staffed by airport and airline employees. 7
Go to the thing you already booked
A pre-booked driver waits in the marked meeting area with a name board instead of approaching arriving passengers. ADO coaches board from the platforms outside Terminals 2, 3 and 4. Airport taxis are arranged at a booth inside the terminal, before the doors. 7, 1, 5
How much does a ride from Cancún airport to the Hotel Zone cost?
Six prices for the same short run out of the airport, read from the sellers' own pages on 25 September 2026.
The spread on one short ride is about five to one. A seat on the ADO coach is 170 pesos, roughly $9.86. A seat in a shared van is $9.00 with taxes in. A whole private car is $34.00. The taxi at the curb runs from $24.85 to $45.00 for the same 28 km, depending on whether you booked it online or asked at the booth. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
| Option | Priced by | One way (USD) | Sets you down at |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADO coach | the person | 9.86 (170 pesos) | the Punta Cancún bus stop |
| Shared shuttle, Cancun-Discounts | the person, taxes in | 9.00 | your hotel |
| Airport taxi, broker's online rate | the vehicle | 24.85 and up | your hotel |
| Uber X, app average | the trip | 26.79 (462 pesos) | disputed at the curb |
| Private car, Cancun Airport Transportation | the vehicle, up to 8 | 34.00 | your hotel |
| Airport taxi, broker's local rate | the vehicle | 45.00 and up | your hotel |
The broker's distance for this run is 28 km and 30 minutes or more. Uber's figure is a one-month average on a generic CUN-to-Cancún route, labeled by Uber as neither fixed nor guaranteed, and curb access at the airport is disputed. Private-car and shuttle figures are starting prices; both sites ask for your hotel, dates and head count to return a total.
Table view: One way to the Hotel Zone for two travelers
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Shared shuttle, two seats | $18 |
| ADO coach, two tickets | $19.72 |
| Taxi, broker's online rate | $24.85 |
| Private car, whole vehicle | $34 |
| Taxi, broker's local rate | $45 |
Two people is where the per-person options still win. The private car holds that same $34.00 for up to eight passengers, so the order flips as the group grows. Source: 3, 1, 5, 4, 2
Per person or per vehicle: that one line decides everything. The coach and the van charge each traveler. The private car and the taxi charge the car. Two people at $9.00 a seat still beat a $34.00 vehicle. Four people at $9.00 a seat come to $36.00, and the car wins. Solo travelers can ignore the per-vehicle column altogether. 3, 4
The ADO coach: 170 pesos and a bus stop
ADO publishes its fare, and the fare holds. The airport service runs from the platforms at Terminals 2, 3 and 4 to a stop at Punta Cancún, by Plaza Fiesta, in about 45 minutes, up to nine times a day, for around 170 pesos. That is $9.86 at the H.10 rate. ADO's own pages for these routes list departures only from Terminals 2, 3 and 4; none of the sources checked mentions Terminal 1 directly. 1, 2
| From Cancún airport to | One way (MXN) | About (USD) | Journey | Departures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Zone, Punta Cancún stop | 170 | 9.86 | about 45 min | up to 9 a day |
| Playa del Carmen | 270 | 15.66 | 1h15 to 1h50 | every 20 to 40 min |
| Tulum ADO terminal | 475 | 27.54 | 2h45 to 3h05 | every 1 to 2 hours |
Journey times vary with the terminal the coach boards at first. The Tulum service arrives on Avenida Tulum in town, with the beach road still ahead of you. ADO's own page for Playa del Carmen showed a July 2026 conversion of its own, around $17; the dollar column here uses the September H.10 rate instead, for consistency across the page.

The catch is the last stretch. The coach sets you down at a bus stop on Boulevard Kukulcán, and your hotel might be a kilometer along it or twelve. A separate ADO stop serves the downtown bus terminal. Price the final leg before you call the coach the cheapest option: a city bus, a short taxi, or a walk with bags in the heat of the afternoon. 1
- A fixed price. The 170-peso fare sits on ADO's own page, and it is the same fare for the first traveler and the fourth. 1
- A schedule, not a departure. Up to nine runs a day to Punta Cancún, so a late landing can mean a long wait on a bench. Playa del Carmen departures are far more frequent, roughly every 20 to 40 minutes. 1, 10
- A bus stop, not a lobby. The last kilometers along the strip are yours to solve, on the R1 city bus or in a short taxi. 1, 12
Shared shuttle or private car: which is cheaper for your group?
A shared van is the cheapest door-to-door seat on this page. One operator lists $9.00 per person one way, taxes included, to any Hotel Zone, downtown or airport-area hotel. That is about a third of the same broker's online taxi rate of $24.85, and it ends at your lobby instead of a bus stop. 3, 5
The cost is time. The operator's own FAQ says a shared van leaves once it fills with passengers bound for nearby hotels, so the trip can absorb a wait at the airport and two or three drop-offs before yours. That same operator tells groups above two to price the private car, because the gap closes fast. 3, 4
| Travelers | ADO coach (USD) | Shared shuttle (USD) | Private car (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 9.86 | 9.00 | 34.00 |
| 2 | 19.72 | 18.00 | 34.00 |
| 4 | 39.43 | 36.00 | 34.00 |
| 6 | 59.15 | 54.00 | 34.00 |
ADO columns are 170 pesos a head converted at 17.2454 pesos to the dollar. The shuttle is $9.00 a head. The private car is one starting price for the whole vehicle, which the operator sells for up to eight passengers, so the six-traveler row is six seats against one car. Coach and shuttle figures rise in a straight line; the car stays put.
Round trips barely reward you. The private operator charges $68.00 for a Hotel Zone return, exactly twice the one-way $34.00. Playa del Carmen returns at $131.33 against $138.00 booked as two singles, a saving of $6.67. Tulum returns at $240.00 against $250.00, a saving of $10.00. Book the return for the certainty of a driver on your last morning, and not for the discount. 4
Is the Cancún airport taxi a scam?
Cancún airport taxis are zone-priced, and the zones have no published government tariff. We went looking for an official rate card from Quintana Roo, from the municipality and from ASUR, the airport operator, and reached none of them. What exists in public is a booking broker's card and an independent blog's compilation. They disagree. 5, 6
| Destination | Broker's card (USD) | Blog's zone table (MXN) | That blog's range (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Zone, northern section | 24.85 to 45.00 | 350 to 420 | 20.30 to 24.35 |
| Hotel Zone, southern section, Punta Cancún | 24.85 to 45.00 | 450 to 550 | 26.09 to 31.89 |
| Downtown Cancún | 24.43 to 45.00 | 200 to 280 | 11.60 to 16.24 |
The broker's lower figure is its online pre-booked rate and the higher one its local rate; both are per vehicle and both carry an 'and up'. The blog's column is its own 2026 compilation, converted here at 17.2454 pesos to the dollar. The broker quotes one Hotel Zone price for the whole strip, while the blog splits it north and south. Neither source is a regulated fare.
One popular claim deserves a check. Downtown is often described as far cheaper by taxi than the Hotel Zone. The broker's own card puts downtown at $24.43 and the Hotel Zone at $24.85 online, 17 km against 28 km, with the same $45.00 local rate for both. The blog does show a real gap, 200 to 280 pesos downtown against 350 to 550 up the strip. Two sources, two answers, and a confirm box at the bottom of this page. 5, 6
Can I take an Uber from Cancún airport?
Uber shows prices at CUN, and the curb is a separate question. Uber's own airport page lists a one-month average of 462 pesos for UberX, about $26.79, rising to 1,062 pesos for UberXL. The page labels those figures averages on a generic CUN-to-Cancún route, and says plainly they are neither fixed nor guaranteed. 9, 2
| Ride option from CUN | Uber's average (MXN) | About (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| UberX | 462 | 26.79 |
| Priority | 495 | 28.70 |
| Comfort | 585 | 33.92 |
| Black | 949 | 55.03 |
| UberXL | 1,062 | 61.58 |
Uber's own footnote: these reflect the past month's average for the option shown from CUN to Cancún, and they represent no fixed or guaranteed price. The destination is a generic default, so a specific Hotel Zone address sits outside these numbers.
Mexico's transport ministry, SICT, issued a statement after a court ruling went Uber's way. The ruling stopped the National Guard from detaining or sanctioning drivers while the underlying case runs, and it granted no authorization to work federal airports. Cancún's operator, ASUR, holds exclusive contracts with the official taxi unions for the arrivals curb. SICT's advice to travelers was to keep using authorized taxis, tourist services and authorized buses. 13
The one option that reliably appears in the app at CUN is Uber Taxi, which prices like a taxi because it is one. Budget it as a taxi and the surprise disappears. 13, 9
Cancún airport to Playa del Carmen and Tulum
Everything south of the airport is one road. Federal Highway 307 leaves CUN and runs down the coast with no toll booth on this stretch: 68 km to Playa del Carmen, 118 km to Tulum, with 50 km of road between the two towns. 14
A transfer operator's own page puts the airport-to-Tulum private-transfer drive at 90 to 110 minutes in normal traffic (the same page lists 90 to 120 minutes for a taxi over the same route), and 20 to 40 minutes longer in high season for any option. 14
| Route | ADO coach (MXN) | Shuttle, per person (USD) | Private car, per vehicle (USD) | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airport to Playa del Carmen | 270 | 25.00 | 69.00 | 68 km |
| Airport to Tulum | 475 | 39.00 | 125.00 | 118 km |
The coach fares are 270 pesos ($15.66) and 475 pesos ($27.54) at 17.2454 pesos to the dollar. The private car is a starting price for the whole vehicle, quoted by that operator at about 50 minutes to Playa del Carmen and 2h to 2h20 to Tulum. Distances come from a transfer operator's own route page, and Highway 307 carries no toll on this stretch.
Going south, the coach wins by a wide margin. ADO charges 270 pesos to Playa del Carmen, about $15.66, against $25.00 for a shuttle seat and $69.00 for a car. To Tulum it is 475 pesos, about $27.54, against $39.00 and $125.00. Playa del Carmen departures run roughly every 20 to 40 minutes, which makes the coach a real option after a delayed landing; Tulum runs every one to two hours. 10, 11, 2, 3, 4
Tren Maya reaches Playa del Carmen from Cancún, and the train has no station at the airport. A shuttle called Tren Maya Conecta links the stations to city centers and to the airport for 55 pesos a ride, about $3.19. Passenger service ran only as far as Playa del Carmen on 25 September 2026, with the Playa to Tulum segment still shut for construction, so a Tulum arrival means a coach or a car. 15, 2
Planning past the transfer? MMT's Mexico country guide sets up the wider trip, and the Cozumel diving budget prices the island that most Riviera Maya trips add on, ferry and marine fees included.
Where your hotel sits on the 22.5 km strip
The Hotel Zone runs 22.5 km, which is why nobody quotes you a single price. The strip is shaped like a 7, the Caribbean on one side and the Nichupté Lagoon on the other, joined to the mainland at both ends. A hotel at kilometer 3 and a hotel at kilometer 18 are different drives, different taxi zones and a different walk from the coach stop. 16

Once you are on the strip, the R1 and R2 city buses run its length for small change. Cancún's municipal government put the authorized fare at 9.50 pesos in the urban zone and 12 pesos in the Hotel Zone in August 2024, about $0.70. A 2025 press account quoting the head of the state mobility institute, IMOVEQROO, described riders paying 12 to 15 pesos against an estimated real cost of 21 to 24. 12, 17, 2
So carry coins and budget the higher end. These buses take cash only, and they take pesos. MMT's guide to ATM fees abroad covers getting those pesos without paying for them twice. 17
- Find your kilometer. Hotels publish their Boulevard Kukulcán address as a km marker. That marker decides your taxi zone and the distance from the Punta Cancún coach stop. 16, 1
- Price the last kilometers. The coach stops at Punta Cancún, and your hotel may be one kilometer along Boulevard Kukulcán or twelve. The R1 bus closes that gap for coins; a short taxi closes it faster. 4
- Compare like with like. Per person against per vehicle, one way against return, taxes in against taxes on top. The shuttle's $9.00 includes tax; the taxi broker's figures all start at 'and up'. 3, 5
What is VISITAX, and who collects it?
VISITAX is real, and the arrivals hall is the wrong place to pay it. Quintana Roo charges foreign visitors a state fee set at 2.5 times the daily UMA. With the 2026 UMA at 117.31 pesos, that comes to 293.275 pesos, usually rounded to 293, about $17.01 a head. The legal basis is Article 51-Octies of the state's Law of Rights, in force since 23 December 2022, and payment runs through the state portal at visitax.gob.mx. 8, 2
Enforcement happens on the way out. Travelers report uniformed checks before the escalators to security screening, where anyone without a valid QR code is pulled aside and pays on the spot. Whether physical kiosks exist inside the terminal is disputed: one account describes them, while a private airport-information site states the tax is payable online only. No government page settled it. 18
One last line for the budget. Every dollar figure here converts at 17.2454 pesos on 18 September 2026, and that rate moves week to week. If you plan to pay by card in Mexico, MMT's guide to foreign transaction fees and exchange rates explains what the machine at the counter is really offering when it asks whether you would like to be charged in dollars. 2
Frequently asked questions
Which Cancún airport terminal has the ADO bus?
ADO's own pages for these routes list departures only from Terminals 2, 3 and 4; none of the sources checked mentions Terminal 1 directly. The Hotel Zone coach leaves those platforms for the Punta Cancún stop at around 170 pesos, about $9.86, and the Playa del Carmen and Tulum coaches board from the same platforms. 1, 10, 2
Should I pay in pesos or in dollars?
ADO and the city buses charge in pesos, so pesos are simplest there, and the city buses take cash only. The shuttle and private-car operators quote and bill in dollars on their own sites. Conversions on this page use the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate of 17.2454 pesos to the dollar for 18 September 2026. 1, 3, 4, 2, 17
Do I have to book the transfer before I fly?
For the shared van and the private car, yes: both sell online, and a booked driver waits in the marked meeting area with a name board. Airport taxis are arranged at a booth inside the terminal after you land. ADO tickets are sold on the day, with the caution that the Hotel Zone route runs up to nine times daily. 7, 5, 1
Is the ADO airport bus 95 pesos or 170 pesos?
ADO's own booking site says around 170 pesos for the airport to Punta Cancún run. An independent fare blog's 2026 table says 95 pesos for an airport bus to Playa Caracol and downtown. This page uses ADO's own number and flags the gap. Check the fare on ADO's site for your date before you count on either one. 1, 6
Can I reach Tulum from the airport on the Tren Maya?
Not as of 25 September 2026. The train has no airport station, the Conecta shuttle links stations to the airport and city centers at 55 pesos a ride, and passenger service ran only as far as Playa del Carmen while the Playa to Tulum segment stayed shut for construction. For Tulum, the ADO coach at 475 pesos and a private car from $125.00 are the two priced options here. 15, 11, 4
How much is a taxi from the airport to downtown Cancún?
Budget the broker's $45.00 local rate and be pleased if the number at the booth is lower. No published government tariff could be reached, so neither source here is a regulated fare. 5, 6, 2
Is VISITAX collected at the airport?
Enforcement is reported at checks before security screening on departure, where travelers without a QR code pay on the spot. One account describes kiosks inside the terminal, while a private airport-information site says the tax is payable online only. No government page settled it. The reliable route is the state portal before you fly, at 293.275 pesos, about $17.01 a person. 18, 8, 2
