The fare names, the bag rules and real September 2026 fares on the two routes a month in Colombia usually starts with.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The cheapest Colombian fare buys a seat and a shoulder bag. Avianca's Basic fare inside Colombia carries one personal item of up to 45 x 35 x 20 cm and an empty bin overhead. LATAM's Economy Basic works the same way. 2, 3, 4
  • One route, five times the price. Wingo advertised Bogotá to Cartagena from COP 177,805 and was asking COP 919,651 for 26 September 2026, about USD 54 against USD 278, at Colombia's official rate of COP 3,306.86 to the dollar. 5, 6
  • Bogotá to Medellín starts at COP 84,390, about USD 26. The same route touched COP 534,690 inside one month, a spread of COP 450,300 on a single seat. 7, 6
  • Buy the bag with the ticket. Wingo prices optional services by route, by channel and by how early you buy, quotes them before sales tax, and charges more at the airport, where its Colombian counters take pesos only. 8
  • Online check-in opens 48 hours out and shuts 45 minutes before a domestic departure. Avianca asks you to be at the airport two hours early, which leaves 75 minutes of slack. 9

What does the cheapest Colombian fare include?

Three airlines, three friendly fare names, one shared starting point: the bag is a separate purchase.

A Colombian domestic ticket is two purchases, and most travelers make only one. At El Dorado in Bogotá the jet bridges work all day; 45,802,360 passengers came through in 2024, ahead of Mexico City and São Paulo. 1 The fare you clicked bought the seat. What goes in the overhead bin is priced somewhere else on the page.

Each airline sells a stripped fare with a friendly name. Avianca calls it Basic. LATAM calls it Economy Basic. Wingo splits its GO fares into tiers, with the cabin bag arriving at Go Standard. On Avianca and LATAM the cheapest fare starts in the same place: one personal item under the seat in front of you, and nothing above your head. Wingo does not spell that out for its cheapest tier, so ask before you book. 2, 4, 10, 3

Avianca's and LATAM's fare-by-fare rules here come from a third-party baggage guide dated 9 June 2026. Wingo's tier weights date from its February 2024 fare overhaul. Open the airline's own page for your route before you pay.

How much does a domestic flight in Colombia cost?

Two routes, read from Wingo's own pages on 26 September 2026.

Wingo lists Bogotá to Medellín from COP 84,390 and Bogotá to Cartagena from COP 177,805, taxes included. At Colombia's official rate of COP 3,306.86 to the dollar, that is about USD 26 and USD 54. Both are floor fares on the airline's own route pages, read on 26 September 2026. 7, 5, 6

Fares include taxes and exclude bags. Dollar figures divide each peso fare by Colombia's official rate of COP 3,306.86 per USD 1, valid 26 to 28 September 2026. Wingo states that fares shown on its pages were collected within the previous 48 hours and may be gone at booking.

The fare calendar is where the money is. Wingo's own calendar priced 26 September 2026 at COP 919,651, the dearest day this research found on the route, while the floor fare of COP 177,805 recurred on 11, 12, 13, 15, 17 to 21 and 25 October 2026. Wingo's calendar can swing sharply between adjacent days, so open it for your own dates before you book. 5

Bag limits: 10 kg up top, 23 kg below

A Colombian carry-on is 10 kg, and the sizer at the gate is real. Avianca's cabin bag is 10 kg at 55 x 35 x 25 cm including wheels and handles, and its free personal item is 45 x 35 x 20 cm. LATAM uses the same 10 kg and 55 x 35 x 25 cm in economy from the Light fare up. Wingo's cabin allowance runs to 12 kg. 11, 3, 4, 10

LATAM's figures come from a third-party baggage guide dated 9 June 2026; Avianca's from its own help center; Wingo's from its February 2024 fare overhaul.

Over the limit, Avianca still takes the bag, up to a point. It carries an overweight or oversized checked bag for an extra charge as far as 230 linear cm and 99 lb, and stops there. A single piece to or from Europe is capped at 70 lb even when you pay. The help center lists those ceilings and leaves out the price, so ask for the peso figure at booking. 12

Adding a bag: buy it in the booking, not at the airport

Neither Avianca nor Wingo published a peso price for a Colombian domestic bag on 26 September 2026. What they do publish is where the price moves: route, channel and how early you buy.

Wingo prices a bag four ways, and the airport is the dearest of them. Its optional services change price by route, by where you buy and by how far ahead, they carry no refund, and the quoted figure sits before sales tax. Its Colombian airport counters take pesos only. 8

  • Add the bag inside the booking. Wingo says plainly that optional services cost more at the airport, and points travelers to My Booking in advance. 8
  • Read the tax line after the fare line. Wingo quotes optional-service fees without sales tax, so checkout runs above the table. 8
  • One GO fare covers the whole reservation. Wingo applies a GO fare to every traveler on the booking, though the outbound and the return can sit on different tiers. 13
  • On Avianca the carry-on is a Basic-only product. The add-on appears for a passenger who bought or is buying a Basic fare; the higher fares already carry the bag. 11

The airport clock: 48 hours, 2 hours, 45 minutes

Three numbers run the airport day. Avianca opens online check-in 48 hours before departure, recommends two hours at the airport for a domestic flight, and closes check-in 45 minutes before the aircraft leaves, online and at the counter alike. 9

  1. 48 hours out, check in from your phone

Avianca's online check-in opens two days ahead. Use it, and a traveler with one personal item walks past the counter queue entirely. 9

  2. Two hours out, be at the airport

That is Avianca's own recommendation for a domestic departure. Anyone traveling with children, pets or special assistance is asked at the counter an hour earlier again. 9

  3. 45 minutes out, the door shuts

Check-in closes 45 minutes before a domestic departure. The two-hour arrival leaves 75 minutes of slack for the queue, the bag drop and the walk to the gate. 9

  4. At the gate, carry the document you booked with

For a foreign traveler on a Colombian domestic flight, the safe default is a passport. Colombia's aviation rules admit another document only where a treaty between Colombia and that traveler's country recognizes it. 14

Which airline should you book?

Start with the route, then price the bag. Wingo's booking widget lists ten Colombian cities: Armenia, Barranquilla, Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Cali, Cartagena, Medellín, San Andrés, Santa Marta and Valledupar. If your pair sits on that list, its floor fares are worth a look beside the legacy carriers. 15

  • Two big bags, one traveler. Price the stripped fare plus two bag purchases against the fare that already includes 23 kg. The carry-on size limits on budget airlines help you decide how much to bring in the first place.
  • Collecting miles. Check where the flight earns before you take the cheapest seat; MMT's guide to airline loyalty programs by alliance sets out who earns where.
  • One bag for the whole month. A 10 kg cabin bag keeps every fare on the table and skips the carousel at both ends. The one-bag travel guide packs for exactly this trip.
  • Planning the rest of the month. The cities, the routes and the costs around these flights sit in MMT's Colombia travel guides.

Wingo's Colombian flights are operated by Aero República S.A., named in the legal line of its own site footer. 15

What to check before you pay

Ten minutes of checks before the booking beats a surprise at the bag drop. Most of these take one look at the airline's own page.

  • The fare you are buying names the bag you are bringing, on the airline's own site and not on a comparison page. 2
  • The bag is added inside the booking, in advance, where Wingo's own pricing is cheapest. 8
  • Your date is compared with the days either side. On Bogotá to Cartagena, adjacent days can differ by hundreds of thousands of pesos, so open the calendar for your own dates rather than trust one snapshot. 5
  • Your passport travels with you on the domestic legs, and the name on it matches the booking. 14
  • Peso figures are converted at the rate on your own travel dates; Colombia certifies the official rate for each business day, and MMT's exchange-rate risk worksheet shows what a 10 percent move does to a month. 6
  • If the month includes work, the desks, data and backup lines sit in MMT's remote-work travel budget.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wingo cheaper than Avianca in Colombia?

Wingo's own route pages put Bogotá to Medellín from COP 84,390 and Bogotá to Cartagena from COP 177,805, taxes included, on 26 September 2026. Run all three for your dates and add the bag to each fare before you judge the winner; Avianca's and LATAM's live fares are not in this page's figures. 7, 5

Can I buy the Avianca carry-on after booking?

Yes. Avianca sells the 10 kg carry-on add-on to a passenger who has already bought, or is buying, a Basic fare, at booking or during online check-in. Classic, Flex and Business fares already include it. 11

Do I need Colombian pesos at the airport counter?

For Wingo, yes. Its airport counters in Colombia accept payments in Colombian pesos only, so do not plan on settling a bag fee in dollars at the desk. A bag also costs more bought at the airport than in advance, so adding it through My Booking before you travel avoids both. 8

When do Colombian domestic fares drop?

By date. Wingo's calendar for Bogotá to Cartagena topped out at COP 919,651 on 26 September 2026, and its floor fare of COP 177,805 recurred on 11, 12, 13, 15, 17 to 21 and 25 October 2026. Open the calendar view and move the date before you switch airlines. 5

How early should I get to a Colombian airport?

Two hours before a domestic departure, which is Avianca's own recommendation. Online check-in opens 48 hours ahead and closes 45 minutes before departure, the same cutoff that applies at the counter. Travelers with children, pets or special assistance are asked to arrive an hour earlier again. 9

What ID do foreigners need for a domestic flight in Colombia?

Carry your passport. Colombia's aviation security rules let citizens substitute other national documents, and admit a document other than a passport for a foreign traveler only where a treaty with their country recognizes it. That account dates from 2020, so confirm with your airline before you plan to fly on anything else. 14

Do Wingo's fares include tax?

The advertised fare does; Wingo's route pages list one-way prices with taxes included. 5 Its optional services, including an added bag, are quoted before sales tax, so checkout runs a little above the fee table. 8

Can I upgrade a Wingo GO fare after booking?

No. Wingo sells its GO Plus and GO Extra tiers only at the moment you buy the trip, and once the ticket is issued it cannot be upgraded. Single optional services can still be added afterwards through My Booking, so choose the tier before you pay. 13
