Colombia travel guide

Build a trip around city museums, coffee farms and Cartagena's walls, with room to enjoy each stop and clear prices for the decisions that matter.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Start with Museo Botero in Bogotá, coffee near Salento or Cartagena’s old city walls. Choose two bases for a week. 1, 2, 3
  • For thirteen nights, try Bogotá, Salento and Medellín, and budget for the road: on 24 September 2026 ACAIME listed its Pereira airport pickup to Salento at COP 232,000 and its Salento-Medellín transfer, about seven hours, at COP 1,400,000. 4, 5
  • Monserrate’s standard return fare is COP 21,000 on Sunday and COP 35,000 Monday-Saturday or holidays, checked 24 September 2026. Sunday closes earlier. 6
  • Check Tayrona’s closure dates first. Budget separately for admission, required accident insurance and other services. 7
  • Check entry rules for your passport. The 90-day visa-free example below applies to full British citizen passports. 8

Where should you go on a first Colombia trip?

Start with the days you want to have. A morning with paintings in Bogotá, a conversation about coffee on a working farm, or a walk beside Cartagena's fortifications gives the trip a clear purpose. Those places offer different ways into Colombia, and each deserves more than the hours left between flights. 1, 16, 3

For a first week, choose two bases. With roughly two weeks, choose three. Leave space to return to a café, move an outdoor visit after rain or follow a good tip.

Choose two or three of these bases. In Bogotá, keep arrival gentle and leave Monserrate movable. Group Medellín visits by area. For Salento, arrange rural transfers and meals. In Cartagena, leave time in town before adding excursions. Tayrona requires checks on closures, insurance and swimming areas. In Cali, keep transfer days clear of late dance nights.

Bogotá and Cartagena make a good first pairing for museums and historic streets. Choose Medellín and Salento for art and coffee farms. Cali earns a place when learning salsa is a priority; its tourism office points beginners toward professional schools. Give the place that most excites you the longest stay. 1, 3, 17, 2, 18

For a longer South America trip, use the Peru travel guide to plan a separate country segment before joining the bookings. Settle each country's entry checks, route and departure point first. That makes it easier to see whether the combined trip still leaves enough time in Colombia.

When is the best time to visit Colombia?

Choose dates for your route, then check the local forecast. UNGRD, Colombia’s disaster-risk agency, describes two periods with less rain in the Andean, Caribbean and Pacific regions. The first runs from mid-December to mid-March. A weaker dip runs from mid-June to mid-September. Much of the Pacific still gets frequent rain throughout the year. 19

Period or regionTypical pattern
Mid-December to mid-MarchLess rain
Mid-June to mid-SeptemberA weaker dip in rainfall
April-May; October-NovemberRainfall peaks
Much of the PacificFrequent rain year-round

The first three rows describe broad parts of the Andean, Caribbean and Pacific regions. Local weather varies. Keep outdoor days movable, with indoor plans for wet days. Check roads, trails, sea conditions and park access close to departure.

January can still be wet. IDEAM reported more rain than normal across much of Colombia in January 2026, especially the Andean, Pacific and Amazon regions. Use the seasonal pattern to pick a travel window, then check IDEAM’s current information for your dates. Leave room to change an outdoor day. 20

On the Caribbean coast, add the storm calendar: the tropical cyclone season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November and can reach the Caribbean and Andean regions. Keep a spare day around Cartagena or Tayrona in those months. 19

Two routes with time to stop

Count nights and protect the days between bases. Book the travel days before fixing every room. Compare flying home from the last city with returning to the first. Include bags and both ground transfers in the cost of each flight. Keep the day after a long journey light.

ROUTESeven nights: Bogotá and Cartagena7 nights
  1. 01
    Bogotá3 nights

Use the first day gently, then choose a museum-centered day and a flexible Monserrate visit. Bogotá's city guide identifies Museo del Oro and Museo Botero as core cultural stops. 1

→ Fly Bogotá (BOG) to Cartagena (CTG); LATAM sells this route. Check your date, baggage allowance and ground transfers, and reserve the day for travel. 21
  2. 02
    Cartagena4 nights

Give the historic port and fortifications time, with a guided history walk and room to revisit an area that interests you. Keep one day undecided until you know what you most want to do. 3

→ Plan departure from Cartagena if the complete flight quote works for you. Otherwise allow a separate return connection and a sensible margin before the international flight.

With less time: With fewer nights, choose one city and stay longer. Airport connection hours leave little room for a city visit.

ROUTEThirteen nights: Bogotá, Salento and Medellín13 nights
  1. 01
    Bogotá4 nights

Spread museums, the historic center and Monserrate across separate days. Leave the hill visit movable within the stay. 1, 6

→ Fly Bogotá (BOG) to Pereira (PEI) with Clic, then take ACAIME's airport pickup to Salento. The drive takes about an hour, and the pickup was listed at COP 232,000 on 24 September 2026; the driver waits at your flight's exit with a sign. 4, 5
  2. 02
    Salento4 nights

Spend a day at Finca El Ocaso learning how coffee is grown and prepared. Leave another day for Cocora and one for the town or rest. Book each outing separately so rain can change the order. 2, 5

→ ACAIME's door-to-door transfer from Salento to Medellín was listed at COP 1,400,000 on 24 September 2026, for about seven hours on the road. Ask whether that price covers the whole vehicle and how many people and bags fit, and keep the day for travel. 5
  3. 03
    Medellín5 nights

Make separate days for Plaza Botero and Museo de Antioquia, Comuna 13, and cafés in Manila. Leave time for a second look at the art or a slower lunch. 17

→ Check the exact departure airport on your ticket and arrange the final ground journey with a margin suited to the flight.

With less time: For nine nights, retain two bases and divide the time between them. Choose the coffee stay if farming and rural time matter most, or Medellín if city activities lead the trip.

Four nights at one base give you three full days between arrival and departure. Use that simple count when judging an itinerary. A three-night stay after a late arrival and before an early flight has only two full days, however many dates appear on the booking confirmation.

If Colombia is one option for a nature trip, compare it with a route in the Costa Rica travel guide. Use the same dates and compare rooms, transfers and days spent in the places you came to see. A low daily estimate helps little if the route leaves you in transit for most of the week.

Bogotá: museums first, Monserrate on a flexible day

Give Bogotá a cultural day of its own. The city's guide points to Plaza de Bolívar, Museo del Oro and Museo Botero. Museo Botero hangs Botero's own work beside international artists. Museo del Oro holds pre-Hispanic goldwork made by Colombia's Indigenous peoples, with displays on why metalworking mattered in their societies. Pick one and give it the morning. 1

Start with one museum, lunch and a short walk in the historic center. Save the second museum for another day if you like to read the displays. Check opening days and ticket details before setting out. 1

Monserrate needs its own timing decision. The operator's schedule checked on 24 September 2026 lists transport until 22:00 Monday-Saturday, but only until 17:00 on Sundays and public holidays. Maintenance can alter operations. Check the operator's hours and fares on the day you intend to go. 6

DayHours
Monday-Saturday06:30-22:00
Sunday05:30-17:00
Public holiday06:30-17:00

Sunday has the lower standard return fare and an earlier finish. Public holidays also finish early, at the weekday/holiday fare. Confirm last boarding, maintenance and the service running that day. Allow extra time for queues; walking-path hours are separate.

The pedestrian path has separate rules. The operator lists ascent Wednesday-Monday from 05:00 to 13:00 and descent until 16:00, with Tuesday closure; IDRD manages the path. Do not plan a late walk down using the transport closing time. Check path status independently before choosing a walking option. 6

Coffee country and Medellín: choose the right kind of stay

A coffee visit should make the farm the main event. UNESCO's listed coffee region includes six farming areas and eighteen urban centers, with family production on small plots part of its character. Ask a host what is happening on the farm during your visit and who will explain the work. 16

Use Salento as the coffee stop on the thirteen-night route. Finca El Ocaso offers both farm tours and rooms near the town. Stay in town if you want to choose each meal and outing as you go. Choose the farm if time among the coffee plants is the point of the stay. Arrange meals and road transfers before booking a rural room. 2, 22

  • Ask whether the farm visit includes production areas, a tasting, a guide and transport from your accommodation.
  • Confirm the language used, group size and which parts of the visit change during rain.
  • Ask about walking surfaces, steps and seating before paying if those details affect your participation.
  • Agree on meals, pickup points and the return journey, especially when staying outside a town.

Finca El Ocaso's traditional tour costs COP 60,000 and takes an hour and a half, following the coffee from the plants to the cup. English tours start at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 16:00, Spanish at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:00, and you can turn up without booking. The access road is unpaved, so wear shoes for the farm. 2

In Medellín, pair Plaza Botero’s sculptures with Museo de Antioquia. Make Comuna 13 a separate outing with a local guide. For a slower day, try cafés in Manila or visit Museo Casa de la Memoria. The city’s guides list these stops. Pick a few and leave time to hear the stories behind them. 17, 23

For Cocora, ACAIME's full day starts with a guide and driver at your hotel, runs about eight hours and was listed at COP 830,000 on 24 September 2026. Ask whether that is per person or per group. Keep the farm visit and Cocora on separate days so each gets a full morning. 5

Cartagena and Tayrona need different plans

Give Cartagena's streets time before adding an excursion. UNESCO describes its fortifications as examples of Spanish military architecture from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Its account also identifies artisans and enslaved people as central to Getsemaní's historic economic life. A good history walk should help you understand the port beyond its façades. 3

Choose a guided walk early in the stay, then return independently to the parts that interested you. Ask guides which histories they cover and whose work shaped the city. Leave a meal or an afternoon unbooked so that the visit has time for more than the route printed on a tour description.

Treat a proposed beach or boat outing as its own purchase. Ask for the departure point, destination, return arrangements, weather policy and a written list of inclusions. Compare those details before the price. Decide how much of your Cartagena stay you want to spend away from the city before committing to several excursions.

Tayrona requires a separate access plan. The park closes every year on February 1-15, June 1-15 and October 19-November 2, dates agreed with the four peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta: the Kággaba (Kogui), Arhuaco (Iku), Wiwa and Kankuamo. Those weeks are set aside for the territory's rest and for environmental, cultural and spiritual work. Recheck the park's current visitor information before booking. 7

The park lies inside the Línea Negra, the ancestral territory of these four peoples, and holds 54 of its sacred sites. They built the park's management plan jointly with Parques Nacionales, and the closure calendar is agreed with them. Keep to marked paths, and give Indigenous families and sacred sites the respect the park asks for. 7

On 3 July 2026 the park announced that all four land sectors, Calabazo, Zaino, Palangana and Bahía Concha, were open to visitors again. Earlier in the year it was closed until 5 March, and its reopening notice warned that repair zones would stay restricted while work continued. Check the park's news page the week you travel, then book transport and a room for the entrance you will use. 24, 25

  • Confirm the entrance, permitted route and current visitor-capacity arrangements before arranging transport. 7
  • Buy the correct admission category and account separately for mandatory accident-assistance insurance. 7
  • Guides are optional for groups under eight; guides, transport, meals and rooms are all paid separately from admission. 7
  • Swim only in authorized areas, obey red flags and stay on marked paths. 7
  • Arriving by boat from Santa Marta, El Rodadero or Taganga? Buy the insurance and pay park entry before you sail. 7

Tayrona takes no advance reservations for entry: tickets are sold at the gate each day, and each attraction has a daily visitor cap. Arrive early in high season, which the park defines as 1 December to 31 January, 1 June to 31 July, Holy Week, long weekends with a Monday holiday and the October school-break week before the Día de la Raza holiday. 7

Food, coffee and cultural evenings

Let meals follow the place you are visiting. In Bogotá, start with ajiaco santafereño. The city's description lists chicken, three kinds of potato, corn and guascas, with capers and avocado among the accompaniments. Order it when you have time for lunch rather than squeezing it between two timed visits. 26

In Medellín, try bandeja paisa or a bean casserole near Pueblito Paisa, the replica town on Cerro Nutibara. The city’s three-day guide names both dishes there. Read the menu and ask what this kitchen puts in each dish. Split a meal or ask about a smaller serving if you want room to try something else. 17

Cali's tourism office highlights cholado, lulada, aborrajado and marranitas among the foods and drinks to try. It also names the Petronio Álvarez Pacific music festival and the Feria de Cali as the city's big multi-day events, so check their dates against yours. 18

Ask about dish ingredients and serving sizes, the coffee tour’s language and pickup, and whether a dance class suits beginners or needs a partner. Use current menus and booking terms for prices.

For dietary needs, ask about the preparation rather than relying on a dish's name. Have essential ingredients or allergies written in Spanish and ask the kitchen to confirm its answer. If the answer is unclear, choose another meal. Carry whatever medical instructions and supplies your clinician recommends for your own needs.

At a café, ask where the beans were grown and how they are brewed. A farm visit gives you time to ask about the work behind the cup. At El Ocaso, the traditional tour ends with coffee made using a cloth filter and pot. Taste it before adding anything, then ask how to make it at home. 2

Ask before taking a portrait, recording a lesson or photographing a craftsperson at work. Agree on any charge before the activity begins. For live music, choose a venue and return journey together, so the evening can end when you want it to rather than when you run out of transport options.

What entry paperwork do you need?

Start with the passport you will use. On 24 September 2026, FCDO advice for travelers from the UK on full British citizen passports says tourism or business visitors can receive up to 90 days without a visa, at the Colombian immigration officer's discretion. An onward or return ticket within that period is required. Other passports need their own consular check. 8

The official CheckMig service is free and asks for journey, flight, contact and accommodation details. FCDO currently describes the form as optional and gives a completion window from 72 hours to one hour before travel. Recheck that guidance and use the official CheckMig page, avoiding paid intermediaries. 10, 8

  • Check nationality-specific entry permission and passport requirements before buying a nonrefundable journey.
  • Save your first accommodation address, onward booking and any required travel permission offline.
  • Check health-document requirements against both your origin and the places you intend to visit within Colombia. 8
  • Check each transit country's requirements separately, even when Colombia is the main destination.

British-Colombian dual nationals must enter and leave using their Colombian passport and Colombian identification card, according to the FCDO guidance checked on 24 September 2026. Settle document questions before departure rather than trying to resolve them at airline check-in. 8

San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina require an extra tourist card. FCDO says to buy it at the boarding gate on the day of the flight. Stays under 24 hours are exempt. Ask your airline for the current price and process before departure, and keep the card with your travel papers. 8

If your trip continues to Brazil, use the Brazil travel guide for that part of the journey. Make a separate document list for each country, including transit stops. Check it before you pay for flights. Keep proof of entry permission with the booking it covers so each leg is ready at check-in.

Your first day: arriving in Bogotá

Arrange the first address before the first attraction. Save the accommodation's full address, contact details and check-in instructions offline. Ask how a delayed arrival will be handled. Choose an easy first meal near the room and leave the rest of the day open until you know how you feel.

  1. Keep the arrival documents together

Have your passport, relevant permission, first address and onward booking ready. If using CheckMig, complete it through the free official service and save the confirmation where you can reach it without mobile data. 10, 8

  2. Use the airport's transport information

El Dorado's official taxi page links to Taxi Imperial for reservations and license-plate verification. Use that channel to confirm the vehicle and pickup arrangements. FCDO advises pre-booked taxis. 14, 27

  3. Confirm the destination and payment

Give the exact address and request a quote for that journey. Taxi Imperial accepts cash or payment by card terminal at the end of the ride. Confirm your payment method before you leave the airport. 15

  4. Settle into the accommodation

Check how to get back into the building, store your bags and save the host’s contact. If you arrive before check-in, ask where bags can be kept and whether there is a charge.

  5. Keep the first outing modest

Start with a nearby meal and a short outing that is easy to end. Bogotá's altitude is a health consideration, so save demanding plans and seek help if you become unwell. 11

Only authorised taxis may pick up passengers at El Dorado's terminals. They are yellow, with white plates and the plate number on the doors and roof. Anywhere in Colombia, FCDO's advice is not to hail taxis on the street: book through an app, your hotel or the restaurant. 27

Getting around: match the ticket to the journey

Compare the whole journey before choosing the fare. Bogotá to Cartagena works as a flight, with LATAM selling BOG-CTG. For Salento, Clic sells Bogotá-Pereira flights and ACAIME lists the airport road transfer. These are options to price for your dates. Add bags, waiting time and both ground journeys before comparing the total. 21, 4, 5

Bogotá's 2026 full fare is COP 3,550 for TransMilenio, TransMiCable and TransMiZonal. Zero-peso transfers within the integrated system require a personalized card and must fall within 125 minutes. A visitor should confirm card eligibility and the applicable route before assuming a transfer will be free. 12

Medellín’s fare table checked on 24 September 2026 lists COP 4,400 for al-portador/eventual users on integrations 1-4. Trips with more integrations cost more. The Cívica Eventual card costs COP 12,100, with travel credit bought separately. Check the category and route before loading the card. 13

  • Before an intercity booking, confirm the exact departure and arrival airport or terminal, baggage allowance and cancellation terms.
  • Before a rural transfer, agree on the pickup point, destination, driver contact and what happens after a delay.
  • Before a city transit trip, check the required card, operating status and the final walk to your destination.
  • Before a late evening, decide how you will return and keep the accommodation address ready for the driver.

For road journeys, examine the route as well as the destination. On 24 September 2026, FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Colombia. Read its regional risk guidance and your own government's advice before deciding on a corridor or border crossing. 28

  • B. Medellín: COP 4,400 applies to al-portador/eventual users on integrations 1-4; more integrations cost more. COP 12,100 buys the Eventual card only, with credit extra. Cable Arví’s COP 26,700 foreigner/general fare is separate from Metro travel; confirm whether it covers one direction or both. 13
  • C. Monserrate: standard adult return transport. Food, travel to the base and optional activities are extra. Confirm any tax or online fee at checkout. Sunday has shorter hours; allow time for queues. 6
  • D. Tayrona and Bahía Concha: these rates apply to nonresident foreigners excluding CAN members. Tayrona’s low and high seasons follow the park’s tariff calendar; Bahía Concha’s listed rate is year-round. Required accident-assistance insurance, guides, transport, rooms and food are extra. Confirm your category and season before paying. 7
  • E. Salento transfers: ACAIME's listed prices, about an hour from Pereira airport and about seven hours to Medellín with pickup at your lodging. Ask whether a price covers the vehicle or each passenger. 5
  • F. Finca El Ocaso: traditional tour, an hour and a half, no booking needed. The Brewing, Premium and Roasting tours cost COP 120,000 to COP 150,000 and need a reservation. 2

For a daily figure, Medellín's official three-day guide (2025) puts average spending at COP 600,000 per person for three days, counting meals, transport and entry tickets: about COP 200,000 a day before your room. 17

Plan a cash withdrawal before you run short. FCDO recommends ATMs inside banks, supermarkets or shopping centers during business hours. Read the fee on the screen and check your bank’s charges before you accept. Keep enough cash for your next planned purchase, then put the card and receipt away before leaving. 27

Choose a room that makes the trip easier

Book the location and arrival arrangements before the view. Compare each property against your planned days and evening return. A room that needs an extra transfer for every meal may suit a quiet retreat but frustrate a city visit. Read recent room-specific feedback and ask about the details that matter to your sleep and mobility.

In Medellín, start your room search in El Poblado, Laureles-Estadio or the center. The city’s guide lists lodging in all three. Manila has cafés; the Carrera 70 corridor has bars and places to stay. Choose by your planned days, then check the exact address and late return route. 23, 27

For a hotel, check reception, late entry and bag storage. For an apartment, check building access, kitchen gear and all fees. A town guesthouse suits independent meals and outings. At a rural property, settle meals, pickup, paths and phone contact. Compare full quotes for the same dates and cancellation terms.

For access needs, ask about the exact room. Check entrance steps, door widths, lifts and the bathroom layout. Request measurements or recent photos. Do the same for the vehicle and the path from drop-off to the door. At Finca El Ocaso, the access road is unpaved; discuss the vehicle and room access before you commit. 2

At Finca El Ocaso, children up to 6 stay free and guests 7 and older pay the full rate. Everyone shows a passport, or a Colombian ID card for nationals, at check-in, and Colombian residents pay 19% VAT on top of the rate. Ask other properties how they charge children and tax before you compare totals. 22

Health, safety and respectful travel

Prepare for the places and activities you have chosen. FCDO reports street robbery in major cities, including La Candelaria in Bogotá. Keep valuables out of sight and plan your route before setting out. For a late return, prebook a taxi and check the vehicle details. Apply the same care in tourist areas. 27

Its current advice also warns about drug-assisted robbery and targeting through dating apps. Keep drinks attended, avoid invitations to strangers' accommodation and make independent return arrangements. Share a meeting plan with someone you trust and leave if the situation changes in a way that makes you uncomfortable. 27

For health planning, take your full itinerary to a qualified clinician. FCDO identifies yellow fever, malaria, dengue, Zika and chikungunya as risks to consider, alongside altitude sickness in Bogotá and several other areas. The relevant precautions depend on where you go and your own health. 11

  • Save 123 for an ambulance and keep your insurer's assistance contact available offline. 11
  • Ask a clinician about altitude, vaccination and mosquito-related risks for the actual itinerary. 11
  • Check insurance terms against planned activities and the regions you intend to visit.
  • Ask accommodation and activity providers how they handle an emergency and how you would reach appropriate care.
  • Carry essential personal information and instructions in a form another person can understand if you need help.

Treat outdoor access decisions as part of the trip. At Tayrona, marked routes, capacity controls and swimming restrictions set the limits of a visit. Follow instructions at the place itself, including red flags, even when an old itinerary or a photograph suggests a different experience. 7

Respect also shapes the ordinary choices: ask before photographing a person, pay agreed fees promptly and keep a group from blocking a doorway or working space. Ask sellers who made an item and how they want the work described. A named maker and a clear explanation are more useful than a broad cultural label.

Pereira or Armenia. ACAIME's pickup to Salento takes about an hour from either, and on 24 September 2026 it was listed at COP 232,000 from Pereira and COP 200,000 from Armenia.
