Costa Rica travel guide
Make room for forest walks, hot springs and a coast you can settle into, with routes and provider prices checked in September 2026.
- Give the main forest-and-coast route 12 nights. Keep arrival and departure nights in the plan; shorten the trip by removing a base.
- Choose your coast before your flights. Liberia serves Guanacaste; a Caribbean route needs a different plan. 1
- Book the room and its transport together. A low room rate loses its appeal when every meal and trail visit needs another ride.
- Mistico lists morning self-guided entry from USD 32 and guided entry from USD 44. Taxes, processing fees and transfers are extra. 2, 3, 4

Start with a forest walk near Arenal, leave time for the hot springs, then spend the end of the trip by the sea. La Fortuna brings those first days together: hanging bridges and forest activities nearby, with kayaking and boat trips on Lake Arenal. 5
This guide builds a first trip around Arenal, Monteverde and one coast. Choose Guanacaste for a route through Liberia, the Central Pacific for Quepos and Manuel Antonio, or the southern Caribbean for Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. The aim is time to enjoy each base, with travel days that fit between them. The suggested nights and booking choices are MMT planning advice; operator schedules and prices carry their own sources.
The essentials, at a glance.
- Suggested first trip
- 12 nights for Arenal, Monteverde and the Central Pacific, including airport nights. MMT allocation.
- SJO arrival
- Juan Santamaría airport is in Alajuela; authorized airport taxis are orange. 8
- Guanacaste gateway
- Liberia airport for a Guanacaste beach route. 1
- Entry
- Check your passport group and actual admitted stay before fixing a long visit. 9
- Pacific season
- The tourism board places the rainy season in May-October. 10
- Caribbean season
- Relatively drier periods: February-March and September-October. 10

- Compare ordinary data, app-only bonuses and expiry before buying a tourist SIM. 13
Where should you go first?
Choose the coast that anchors the trip. For a first visit with several forest days, start with La Fortuna and Monteverde, then finish around Quepos or Manuel Antonio. For a trip built around beach time, begin with Liberia and Guanacaste. If the Caribbean is the main draw, give it the largest share of your nights and simplify the inland portion.
Guanacaste combines Pacific beaches with tropical dry forest. Tamarindo brings surf and restaurants into the same base; Barra Honda adds dry-forest trails and caves inland. Liberia is the region’s airport gateway. These are good reasons to plan a western trip, with separate checks for swimming conditions and cave access. 1
On the Central Pacific, Quepos and Manuel Antonio pair forest visits with the coast. Jacó offers dark sand and surf. Make the choice by the days you want: a park-led stay around Manuel Antonio, or a stay centered on the beach and surf at Jacó. 14
Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Gandoca-Manzanillo form the southern Caribbean thread, with beaches and Afro-Caribbean food and music. Tortuguero is a separate routing decision because access is by boat or plane. Put it into the plan deliberately, with its own transfers. 15
| Trip focus | Gateway to plan around | Core bases |
|---|---|---|
| Forest and Central Pacific | San José / SJO | La Fortuna, Monteverde, Quepos or Manuel Antonio |
| Guanacaste coast | Liberia / LIR | Tamarindo, with an optional Monteverde stay |
| Southern Caribbean | San José / SJO | Cahuita or Puerto Viejo, with optional La Fortuna |
If your leave is short, choose the place you most want to wake up in and protect those nights. A second beach hotel adds packing, check-out and another arrival. Use the same room for the rest day, too. That gives you somewhere to return when the walk ends early or the group wants different afternoons.
For a longer regional journey, use the Panama travel guide to plan that next country as its own leg. Set the border and onward travel arrangements before attaching another beach stop to this route. Each country needs time for arrival, local transport and a departure buffer.

When is the best time to visit?
Match the month to the coast. The tourism board describes May-October as the Pacific rainy season. The Caribbean has no sharply defined dry season, but February-March and September-October are relatively drier periods. A September beach plan therefore deserves a look at the Caribbean before you settle on the Pacific. 10
Treat those broad patterns as a way to choose a route. Once you have dates, build the daily plan around the local forecast and the operator’s advice. Keep a full day free of prepaid outings in the base that matters most to you. You can use it for another walk, a postponed activity or a long lunch.
- If beach time drives the trip, select the coast first and check the conditions at the actual beach before swimming.
- If forest walks drive the trip, pack for wet paths and give the walk its own morning or afternoon. Leave room to dry your shoes afterward.
- If a school holiday fixes your dates, reduce the number of bases. Spend the planning effort on rooms and transport that fit those dates.
Pack a small rain layer where you can reach it during a transfer. Keep dry clothes apart from damp swimwear, and protect your phone and tickets. Test the packed bag at home by carrying it up the stairs.
Rain also changes the value of a hotel room. Look for somewhere you would enjoy spending an unplanned afternoon: a covered sitting area, space to sort wet gear, or a room where everyone can rest without taking turns. Choose those features from the property’s actual room details. A broad promise of a nature stay tells you little about a wet afternoon.
Your first day from San José airport
Make the first bed easy to reach. Juan Santamaría International Airport lists its address in Alajuela. For a late arrival, choose an Alajuela or Río Segundo airport-area stay and arrange the ride before flying. Use a San José base when spending time in the capital or meeting your next transfer there suits the trip. 8
Save the essentials before departure
Keep your room address, map pin, booking name and late check-in instructions offline. Put the driver’s meeting instructions beside them. Have the return or onward travel record ready for entry checks, along with the passport and any required visa. 9
Find the agreed ride
After completing arrival formalities and collecting your bags, follow your booked pickup instructions. For an airport taxi, use the authorized orange service listed by SJO. Show the full hotel address and confirm the fare basis and payment method before leaving. 8
Choose a bus only with a complete connection
The airport transport page links TUASA Alajuela, Terminal 7-10 and other terminals. Use those names to check the correct station for your onward route; each link names a different place. Confirm the actual service and last departure with the operator before choosing this arrival plan. 8
Settle the next morning
At the room, check where the next driver will collect you and whether breakfast fits that departure. Repack so the travel documents, a snack and the rain layer stay with you. Leave the large outing for a rested day.
For an early flight home, make the final hotel a separate decision from the first. Enter the airport name and departure terminal in your transfer request. Check the pickup time against airline guidance, baggage needs and the return of any rental car. A place advertised with San José in its name still needs its own map check.
Keep the first evening small: a meal near the room, a shower and a check that the bags are ready. Save the fallback taxi plan even when you have a transfer booked.
Three routes you can copy
Count nights and keep transfer days clear. All allocations below are MMT suggestions, including the airport nights. Choose the route before filling it with tours. Book the key rooms and transfers next, then the forest entry that matters most. Leave space around the first outing so a late arrival has somewhere to go in the plan.
- 01Alajuela / SJO area1 night
Arrive, eat and rest. Use this night to start the inland trip without racing the flight arrival. Keep the next morning simple and have the room packed before breakfast.
→ Prebook a road transfer to La Fortuna. - 02La Fortuna3 nights
Choose a bridge walk and leave a separate afternoon for hot springs. Give the group an open slot before moving on. Spend the arrival evening settling into the base instead of adding a timed outing.
→ Interbus lists the onward Monteverde route; confirm your lodging pickup. 16 - 03Monteverde3 nights
Give the preserve a full day in the plan, including travel to its Visitor Center. Use the other full day for a second walk or a slower day, according to how everyone feels.
→ Book the road transfer to Quepos or Manuel Antonio. - 04Quepos or Manuel Antonio4 nights
Choose a single room base for the coast. Put the national park visit near the start of this stay once its date is booked, then leave open time for the beach and meals.
→ Return by road toward your SJO-area hotel. - 05Alajuela / SJO area1 night
Sleep near the departure end of the journey. Repack wet gear and check the flight while there is still time to sort out the morning ride.
→ Prebook the airport transfer for your flight.
With less time: With 8 nights, use 1 arrival night, 3 La Fortuna nights, 3 coastal nights and 1 departure night. Save Monteverde for a trip with more room.
- 01Liberia area1 night
Use the arrival night to rest and collect any rental car in daylight. A planned overnight makes sense when the inbound flight leaves little time for the onward trip.
→ Arrange a road transfer to Monteverde. - 02Monteverde3 nights
Build the forest stay around a rested walking day. Keep the next day loose enough to follow the group’s energy, with time for a meal and an early return to the room.
→ Arrange the onward road leg to Tamarindo. - 03Tamarindo4 nights
Stay in one place for the beach portion. Set aside time for a lesson if surfing is the goal, and keep an unscheduled day. Choose the room’s position around meals and the activities you actually book.
→ Return by road to Liberia. - 04Liberia area1 night
Keep the last night for the flight connection and any car return. Confirm the hotel transfer directly instead of relying on the property’s airport label.
→ Transfer to Liberia airport.
With less time: For a shorter beach break, omit Monteverde and keep Tamarindo as the main base. For more forest time, add nights inland before extending the coast.
- 01Alajuela / SJO area1 night
Rest after the flight and keep the next day for the road journey. Arrange the La Fortuna transfer as a separate booking from the airport pickup.
→ Road transfer to La Fortuna. - 02La Fortuna3 nights
Choose the forest experience you most want, then leave space around it. Avoid filling the evening before the Caribbean transfer, when you will want the bags packed and an early night.
→ Interbus publishes a Fortuna-Cahuita route; confirm the date and pickup. 16 - 03Cahuita or Puerto Viejo6 nights
Choose one southern Caribbean base and settle in. Give meals and unbooked afternoons room in the week. Add a community-hosted visit only after the hosts confirm the arrangements directly.
→ Arrange the return road transfer to the SJO area. - 04Alajuela / SJO area1 night
Use the final night to separate the long return journey from the flight. Keep the morning ride confirmed and your travel documents with you.
→ Transfer to SJO.
With less time: If the Caribbean is the reason for the trip, omit La Fortuna and use those nights on the coast. Add Tortuguero only by redesigning the transfers around it.
Can you travel without a car?
A car-free trip works best with fixed bases. For the routes here, compare a shared shuttle or private road transfer between each pair of hotels, then price the local rides separately. Interbus publishes the connections below. The times are its estimates read on 24 September 2026, so keep a transfer day free of a tightly timed activity. 16
| Route | Departure | Estimated journey |
|---|---|---|
| Fortuna to Monteverde | 08:00 | 4 hours |
| Monteverde to Manuel Antonio | 08:00 | 4 hours |
| Fortuna to Manuel Antonio | 07:45 | 5 hours 30 minutes |
| Fortuna to Cahuita | 06:00 | 6 hours |
| Manuel Antonio to San José | 08:00 or 12:30 | 4 hours 30 minutes |
Operator estimates, not road-driving guarantees. Confirm your pickup address, date, fare, luggage terms and final drop-off.
A shared shuttle suits a trip whose hotel changes are already settled. A private transfer deserves a quote when the group has awkward arrival times, extra bags or a need for planned stops, especially if reaching a shared pickup would mean another paid ride. Compare full party prices. Keep the same endpoints in both quotes.
Use public buses when you have time to build the connections. Start with the destination and the named operator, then identify the departure terminal and the last local leg to the room. Save the station pin. A town name alone is too vague for a taxi driver, and a connection that looks short on a map still needs time for bags.
For a rental car, compare the total charge and the deposit separately. Request the insurance terms, any road exclusions, the car-return location and the cost of returning elsewhere. Give the rental firm the actual lodging addresses before choosing the vehicle. Decide who will drive each leg, and keep arrival day light enough for that person to rest.
The FCDO warns that heavy rain can cause potholes and landslides that block roads. Keep luggage with you on buses where possible and leave no bags in a parked car. Use a hotel bag drop before a sightseeing stop. 17
Choose a base that saves local rides
Search by town and daily plan. Start with central La Fortuna for an Arenal stay, Santa Elena town for Monteverde, Quepos or Manuel Antonio for the Central Pacific, and Cahuita or Puerto Viejo for the Caribbean. These are starting points for a room search. Compare the actual address with your pickup and meal plans before reserving.
Santa Elena town and Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve are distinct places. The tourism board locates that reserve outside the town; Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve is another reserve. Use the full attraction name in both your room notes and your transport booking. 18
For La Fortuna, decide whether the room is mainly somewhere to sleep between outings or a place to spend much of the day. A lodge with meals and activities you want can justify more time on site. Start the search in town when you prefer eating out and arranging outings separately.
Around Quepos and Manuel Antonio, make a small map with the hotel, your chosen park meeting point and the places you expect to eat. Then work through a full day: leaving with walking gear, returning tired, going out for dinner and getting home. Price any rides that day needs before you compare the room totals.
- For a family, check the actual bed setup and sleeping space, not just the stated guest capacity. Keep the late arrival and breakfast plan together.
- For a solo stay, favor a straightforward evening return and a clear pickup point. Include the cost of coming home after dinner in the room comparison.
- For a group with different interests, choose a base where someone can rest while others take an outing. Agree in advance which transfers everyone needs to share.
Compare rooms on the same dates and cancellation terms, recording the total for the whole stay, the payment currency, breakfast, parking and any transport included. A refundable room can hold the route while you settle a flight or an important tour; decide when that flexibility is worth paying for.
Forest walks and park tickets
Book the named place and its arrival point. Arenal-area activities include private parks as well as the national park. Mistico tickets cover its own hanging bridges experience. For Manuel Antonio or Arenal Volcano National Park, check the current SINAC reservation details before choosing a date. Put the park’s own entry and any guide service on separate lines in your plan.
At Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, start at the Visitor Center, 1.5 km below the entrance. Arrive 15 minutes before the booked slot; the shuttle leaves at that time. The self-guided visit includes the shuttle in both directions. Follow the circuit chosen for your booking. 11
| Circuit | Distance / time | Rated difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Essence | 1.4 km / about 1 hour | Easy |
| Heart of the Forest | 2.8 km / about 1.5 hours | Easy to moderate |
| Continental Divide | 4.1 km / about 2.5 hours | Moderate |
Walking estimates exclude your journey to the Visitor Center and check-in. Choose for the whole group’s pace.
The Essence circuit reaches Cuecha Cascade; Heart of the Forest includes a hanging bridge. The Continental Divide route continues into wind-shaped dwarf forest and toward ridge viewpoints. Pick the scene you want to spend time with, then check that its route fits your walking ability. 11
Choose the shorter circuit if you want time to stop often. Distance alone tells you little about how the group will enjoy a walk. Think about who wants photographs, who gets tired standing still and who likes moving at a steady pace. A shorter route gives those different needs more room than a long route with a deadline afterward.
At Mistico, guided entry includes the hanging bridges trail and a naturalist guide. Self-guided entry covers the trail without that guide. Choose guided for help interpreting what you see; choose self-guided for control of your pace. 3, 2
Carara’s tourism-board listing describes a 1.2 km universal-access trail intended for wheelchair users and visitors with low vision. Make it a candidate for an access-focused forest day, then confirm current surface conditions and facilities with the park. 14
- Keep the exact ticket name, entry point and meeting pin in the same note. Show that note to the driver before setting off.
- Choose shoes for the walk you booked and pack the rain layer in your day bag. Keep the return pickup details available offline.
- Book a guide for the questions you want answered. Tell the guide what interests the group, then leave space for what the day brings.
Give wildlife time without making a sighting the test of the day. Stop to listen, watch the leaves and look closely at the smaller things along the path. Keep the trail pace comfortable enough for everyone to do that. Leave feeding, touching and close approaches out of the plan, and follow the guide’s instructions around animals.
How much do the experiences cost?
Price the outings you want before adding more stops. On 24 September 2026, Mistico advertised the starting prices below. They are private-park experiences. Keep national park admission as a separate budget item. The booking total must also account for taxes, digital processing fees and any transfer you select. 7, 4
| Experience | From (USD/person) |
|---|---|
| Morning self-guided bridges | 32 |
| Guided bridges | 44 |
| Birdwatching | 54 |
| Night walk | 54 |
Inclusions by experience: Morning self-guided bridges includes trail entry. Guided bridges includes trail entry and a naturalist guide. Birdwatching includes trail entry, a bird guide, early access, a spotting scope and checklist; minimum age 10. Night walk includes trail entry, a naturalist guide and visitor flashlights; minimum age 10. All prices are advertised starting rates; request a quote for your date. Taxes, digital processing fees and transport excluded. USD as listed by the provider; no currency conversion.
The self-guided detail page also advertises an afternoon starting rate of USD 28. Compare your preferred slot before paying. The morning comparison below uses the USD 32 rate; for a party of 2 adults paying those listed starting rates, the guided choice adds USD 24 in base tickets. 2, 3
Table view: Mistico base tickets for 2 adults
| Item | Value (USD for 2 adults) |
|---|---|
| Morning self-guided | 64 USD for 2 adults |
| Guided | 88 USD for 2 adults |
MMT arithmetic on advertised starting rates: 2 × 32 = 64; 2 × 44 = 88; difference 24 USD. Excludes taxes, digital processing fees and transfers. No currency conversion. Source: 2, 3, 4
| Ticket choice | Base tickets for 2 adults (USD) |
|---|---|
| Morning self-guided | 64 |
| Guided | 88 |
Same scope as the chart: base entry for 2 adults, excluding taxes, digital processing fees and transfers. Difference: USD 24. No currency conversion.
Mistico defines adults as 18 and older, but also lists a teen band through 18. It lists seniors from 65 and requires valid ID for resident rates. Have an 18-year-old’s category confirmed before paying; price children, seniors and residents separately from this adult example. 4
Use the difference to decide what you value on the walk. If you want to understand the forest and ask questions, put the guide ahead of another paid outing. If you want long photo stops and quiet time on your own schedule, choose self-guided and keep the spare money for a different day. Both choices need a transport plan.
Build the rest of your budget from actual quotes. Start with flights and the full room total, then add every move between bases. Add local rides to trailheads, activity tickets, food and a reserve for changes. Keep CRC and USD in separate columns until you choose a dated exchange rate for your own budget.
What to eat and how to pay
Leave time for a proper lunch. Sodas serve home-style food; gallo pinto is rice and beans, while a casado is a mixed plate. On the Caribbean side, try agua de sapo, a drink made with brown sugar and ginger. A copo is shaved ice with condensed milk. 21
Make a meal part of the day instead of a hurried gap between bookings. After a morning walk, aim for lunch near the room before deciding on an afternoon outing. That lets the group split according to energy and appetite. For an early transfer, settle breakfast the evening before and keep a snack within reach.
Costa Rica’s currency is the colón. The tourism board says US dollars and major cards are widely accepted, and bank transactions require the original passport. It lists a 10% restaurant service charge and 13% VAT in final prices. Read the bill before adding a tip, and check each provider’s tax wording on tour quotes. 6
Record the currency when ordering an expensive item or agreeing to a ride. Check the card terminal amount against the bill before paying. Keep a second payment method apart from the first and some usable cash for small purchases. Decide who will track shared costs if you are traveling as a group; a note made at lunch beats a memory exercise later.
- At a soda, ask what comes with the plate and choose from the food you actually want. Order extra dishes after checking portions.
- For a food allergy, carry a clear Spanish explanation and ask about ingredients and preparation. Choose another meal when the answer is unclear.
- For a room with a kitchen, check what equipment is supplied before planning to cook. Buy for the nights you will stay, leaving room in the bag for the next transfer.
Carry a refillable bottle and ask about the local water supply at each stay before filling it. The tourism board notes rural exceptions to its drinking-water advice. For a day out, settle where you will refill before leaving the room. 6
If this is part of a wider Latin American trip, keep separate cost sheets for each country. The Mexico travel guide is a useful next planning page when Mexico is also on your route. Compare actual room and transport choices in each place before assigning the same daily allowance to both.
The Caribbean and a community-hosted visit
Give the Caribbean its own time. Start the room search in Cahuita or Puerto Viejo and choose a base around the days you want. Keep the arrival afternoon free, then use the first full day to settle the rest of the stay. A beach morning, a meal and time back at the room make a complete day.
For Bribri community tourism, start with Stibrawpa’s own account of its work. The association identifies itself with Yorkín, in Talamanca Bribri territory, and describes community-directed tourism, cultural sharing and chocolate production. Use the Stibrawpa contact route to discuss a visit with the hosts. 22
Treat that conversation as the start of the plan. Let the hosts define the visit, the meeting point and the activities available for your date. Discuss group size, language needs and any access requirements before arranging the river transfer. Leave space for the visit they offer instead of arriving with a fixed list of scenes you expect to see.
- Ask the hosts to confirm that they are receiving visitors for your dates, then settle the full cost and payment arrangements.
- Agree on the guide, transfer, meals and any overnight stay before booking connecting travel.
- Ask before photographing people or recording explanations. Follow the hosts’ guidance about where to go and what can be shared afterward.
When buying something made locally, ask who made it and pay the stated price or discuss the sale respectfully. A purchase and a photograph are separate requests. Give people room to decline a photo without having to explain. The same approach works in a workshop, a kitchen or an ordinary street encounter.
Do you need a visa?
Check the passport you will use. As read on 24 September 2026, Costa Rica’s tourism board lists a maximum nonextendable stay of 180 calendar days for first-group countries. The immigration officer sets the actual admitted stay. Other passport groups have different rules; verify your own visa and passport-validity requirements before booking. 9
The entry page requires evidence of return or onward travel and sufficient means. For onward travel, it lists a prepaid international bus ticket, a flight out or cruise passage among accepted forms. Keep that record easy to open when checking in and entering the country. 9
Check each traveler separately, including children and anyone using a different passport from the rest of the group. Match the names on tickets to the documents being used. If you hold more than one passport, keep the travel plan clear about which one will be presented on each leg. Put the official answer beside the itinerary before paying for fixed bookings.
Before buying the flight
Use the official entry guidance for your nationality and travel document. Include the countries where you will change planes. Resolve any uncertain visa requirement before choosing a nonrefundable routing.
Before departure
Keep the onward ticket, first address and the documents required for your circumstances together. Save copies offline and leave a separate copy with someone you trust.
After entry
Check the admitted-until date in your own record. Set a reminder comfortably before it and make sure the departure booking fits. Ask for help promptly if the record differs from what you expected.
Yellow fever document requirements depend on origin and travel history. Check your full route with the airline and health authority. The tourism board’s August 2026 notice concerns outbound Costa Rican citizens and residents; foreign visitors must check their own requirements. 9, 12
If you are planning several countries, place the health and entry checks beside the route while it is still easy to change. Use the Colombia travel guide for that country’s separate planning decisions, then check the requirements for the actual order of travel. The direction of the journey matters when you review recent travel history.
Phones, health and a longer stay
Set up the essentials before heading out. Save the tickets, maps and pickup pins offline. Keep the phone charged on travel days and put a power bank in the bag you carry. Decide how you will contact a driver if your usual number stops receiving calls or messages.
Kölbi’s SIM Turista terms distinguish ordinary allowances from app-specific bonuses. They set expiry at 30 days or when the allowance is used, and exclude international calls and roaming. At purchase, get the current total price and ordinary-data allowance in writing, then test the connection before leaving. 13
For a working stay, choose a single base and test it before committing to a long rental. Ask for a recent connection test from the room, a usable desk and details of backup power or another place to work. Set workdays apart from transfer days. A road journey is a poor place to promise a meeting with no interruptions.
Costa Rica has a separate digital nomad route with application and insurance requirements. Check the official program requirements before organizing a remote-work stay. Settle permission and insurance before a long housing commitment. 23
For a medical emergency, call 911 and ask for an ambulance. Arrange insurance for treatment and evacuation, and review your route with a travel-health clinician. The FCDO lists dengue, malaria and Zika risks; discuss bite prevention and any medical needs before travel. 12
For swimming, get current local advice: rip currents are common and many beaches lack lifeguards. For adventure outings, choose an established operator with experienced staff and check that your insurance covers the activity. Avoid isolated walks at night, and arrange the ride home before an evening out. 17
- Carry the insurer’s assistance number offline and share it with a travel companion. Keep enough accessible funds for a change of plan.
- List each planned activity when reviewing the policy. Read the exclusions and rescue terms alongside the activity description.
- Before leaving a base, check that you have medicines, documents and charging gear. Put those in the bag that stays with you.
Keep the last day for getting home. Reconfirm the ride, leave time to retrieve stored bags and check the flight before setting off. A final swim or walk is optional; reaching the airport calmly is the fixed part of the day. Pack the clothes you want for the flight where you can reach them.

Should I keep both La Fortuna and Monteverde on a short trip?
For the 8-night MMT plan, keep La Fortuna and the coast. Adding Monteverde takes a stay and another travel day. If cloud forest is the main reason you are coming, swap it for La Fortuna, then rebuild the transport around that choice. Choose the experience first and let the route follow.
Is it worth arriving at SJO and leaving from Liberia?
Price that route if you want to finish in Guanacaste. Compare the flight difference with the road return, any rental-car drop fee and the final hotel. Use the same travel dates and baggage needs in both quotes. Book only after the ground legs fit the flight times.
What should I arrange if my flight might arrive after midnight?
Ask the hotel which calendar date to reserve for a room you will use just after midnight, and get late check-in instructions in writing. Give the transfer firm your flight number; ask when waiting charges start and what happens after a delay. For a backup, SJO’s transport page lists Coopetranstura among airport taxi providers. 8 Save its contact before departure and update the hotel if your arrival changes.
Does a Mistico guided ticket include the entrance?
How should I choose a Monteverde circuit for mixed walking abilities?
Start with the shortest route everyone can enjoy, then plan time for pauses. Tell the preserve about mobility aids, balance concerns or fatigue before selecting a circuit. The published difficulty labels describe walks; ask about the exact surfaces, gradients, steps and vehicle boarding needed for your visit.
What should I check before booking a shuttle with children?
Send the children’s ages, the luggage count and any child-seat needs in the quote request. Get the seating arrangements and full party price back in writing. Check whether the quoted pickup reaches your accommodation and how a delayed flight affects the booking. Keep food and spare clothes accessible.
Which shoes and day bag should I bring for Mistico?
Pack shoes that fully enclose your feet. Mistico’s self-guided packing list also recommends a rain jacket, insect repellent, sunscreen, binoculars and a water bottle, as checked on 26 September 2026. 2 Use a light day bag for the walk. Wear your walking shoes on transfer days to save luggage space; pack a separate pair for relaxing afterward. Share binoculars within your group if keeping baggage light.
Can I fit remote work around the main itinerary?
The 12-night route leaves 2 full days in La Fortuna, 2 in Monteverde and 3 on the coast between hotel changes. Put your required work hours onto those 7 days, then see which outings still fit. If work fills most of them, extend one base and drop another. Before booking, ask your employer about working from Costa Rica, access to its systems and the hours you must overlap with colleagues.
Should I split my beach nights between both coasts?
Choose one coast for these first-trip plans. Split the stay only when the second coast matters enough to justify another long move. Write down the full door-to-door transfer and the nights left afterward. If the added destination gets only a rushed day, keep those nights at the first coast.
What should I reserve first?
Settle the flight gateways and any entry requirements, then find rooms with workable transfers. Reserve the date-specific experience that matters most and fit flexible days around it. Keep a single note with payment deadlines and cancellation cutoffs so you can release a room you no longer need in time.
