MMT / COUNTRY GUIDE

United States travel guide

Pick one region, give it two weeks, and let the country show you the rest next time. Routes, prices and entry rules checked September 2026.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Give one region ten to fourteen days. Boston to Washington by train, a desert loop from Las Vegas, or Nashville to New Orleans by road and rail. Coast-to-coast in a week is a tour of airports. 1, 2
  • Nonresidents now pay $100 per adult at eleven famous parks on top of the $35 car fee. The $250 Non-Resident Annual Pass covers a carload; for two adults and three parks it saves $455. 3, 4
  • ESTA costs $40.27 and takes minutes; admission is decided at the border. Citizens of 42 countries qualify; a visit to Cuba since January 2021 usually disqualifies. 5, 6, 7
  • JFK to Midtown is $11.75 by AirTrain and subway, or $70 plus surcharges by taxi. Tap a bank card at the AirTrain gate; the subway takes the same card. 8, 9, 10
  • Yosemite needs no entry reservation in 2026; Angels Landing and Half Dome still need a lottery. Book those before the flights, not after. 11, 12, 13

The United States is not one trip. It is a train that runs from Boston's brick lanes to the Washington Mall with New York in the middle, a desert loop where three of the world's great canyons sit a morning's drive apart, and a river road where the music changes every hundred miles. Pick one. Ten to fourteen days in a single region is the trip people come home talking about. 1, 2

This guide covers the fifty states and Washington, DC, with Alaska and Hawaiʻi treated as the separate trips they are. Tribal Nations are contemporary governments with their own visitor rules, and the best places on the Colorado Plateau are on their land. Everything priced here was read on the operator's own page on 12 or 13 September 2026, with the source numbered at the end. 15, 16

The essentials, at a glance.

First-trip length
10 to 14 days for one region; a week suits one city and one side trip. 1
Car-free route
Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington by Amtrak; each city's transit is a separate ticket. 2, 9

Great Smoky Mountains, 11.5 million visits in 2025, with a $5 daily parking tag instead of an entrance fee. 25, 26

Where should you go first?

Four trips, one country. Each fits two weeks; none fits a week with another.

Choose the region before the hotels. The Northeast is the trip for a visitor who wants to leave the car at home. The Southwest is the trip for canyons and long horizons. The South is food and music. California is two cities and one valley. Alaska and Hawaiʻi are whole trips of their own. 1, 27

Nights are MMT planning ranges, not package lengths. Alaska and Hawaiʻi each need seven to ten days of their own; see below.

New York and Washington: book the right ferry

Statue City Cruises is the only ferry that lands on Liberty Island and Ellis Island; the harbor cruises that sail past are a different product. Adult tickets are $26, with pedestal and crown access shown as small add-ons and crown tickets scarce. Allow most of a day for both islands. In Washington the National Gallery of Art is free with no timed ticket; give the East and West buildings a half-day each. 28, 29, 30

California: two cities and one valley

San Francisco is a walking city and Los Angeles is a driving one; three or four nights in either, then two or three near Yosemite if granite and waterfalls are the point. Yosemite has dropped its entry-reservation system for 2026, so the constraint is lodging, not a ticket. Half Dome's cables still need a permit lottery, $10 to apply and $10 per person if you win. Check road conditions before linking the Sierra with the deserts. 11, 13, 31

Southwest: three canyons and Navajo land

Zion and the Grand Canyon's South Rim are a manageable core in ten days from Las Vegas, with Bryce Canyon between them. Give each park at least two nights so the transfer day stays a transfer day and the visit stays whole. The rim walk at the Grand Canyon is a full experience without going down; the park itself says a rim-to-river-and-back day hike is a mistake. 33, 34

Monument Valley is a Navajo Tribal Park, run by the Navajo Nation, at $10 per person per day with the Nation's authorized guides for the valley floor; RVs and motorcycles are barred from the loop road. Havasu Falls belongs to the Havasupai Tribe: $455 per person for a fixed three nights, no transfers or resale, half refunded only 90 days out. The Hualapai Tribe's Grand Canyon West sells the Skywalk for $99. 15, 35, 16, 36

The South: three cities, one river, all the music

New Orleans deserves four or five nights if evening music matters. Nashville and Memphis make a second thread three hours apart by road, then a train south along the Mississippi. Chicago, Seattle and Miami each anchor a week of their own; give them that week instead of a layover. 1, 37

Alaska and Hawaiʻi are full trips

In Alaska, start in Anchorage at the Alaska Native Heritage Center ($30, open daily in summer) and add a Seward day for Kenai Fjords. Denali's buses run 20 May to 17 September and stop at Mile 43; hikers and cyclists can continue west with no services. In Hawaiʻi, one island for a week beats two for a weekend: Haleakalā's sunrise needs a $1 reservation on top of the $30 entry, and Hanauma Bay a $25 ticket released two days ahead. 38, 23, 39, 40

What to eat, and how to order it

Plan meals around place. The country eats by region and by the immigrant communities that built each city: Chinese in San Francisco and New York, Cuban in Miami's Little Havana, Vietnamese in Houston and New Orleans, Indian in Chicago's Devon Avenue. Leave dinners unbooked and follow the neighborhood. A grocery store and a park bench are the best-priced lunch in every national park. 41

  • New Orleans: gumbo with rice, chicken-and-andouille or seafood; a po-boy sandwich; a muffaletta of cured meats, cheese and olive salad; beignets as a sweet stop, not breakfast. 42, 43
  • The barbecue belt: Texas means smoked beef brisket, Memphis means pork, Kansas City means burnt ends and sweet sauce. One plate feeds two. 44
  • New Mexico: 'red or green?' is the state question, and it means chile, on enchiladas or a green-chile cheeseburger. Ask about the day's heat. 45
  • Hawaiʻi: poi is pounded taro, kālua pig is cooked in an underground oven, haupia is coconut pudding, poke is seasoned raw fish. A commercial lūʻau mixes several Polynesian cultures; listen for what is Native Hawaiian. 46

Tip 15 to 20 percent at table service, and read the bill first: some restaurants add gratuity for groups. Counter-service screens now ask too; that prompt is optional. Sales tax is added at the till in most states, 8.875% in New York City, nothing at all in Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware or Alaska. The menu price is the starting price. 19, 17, 18

Your first 24 hours: JFK to a Manhattan base

The most common international arrival, step by step, with the fares read on 13 September 2026.

Save the hotel address and booking offline before you board, have your ESTA or visa in order, and carry a second card. Without preclearance abroad, the sequence at JFK is immigration, baggage, customs, exit. There is no paper I-94 for air arrivals; the record is online afterward. 49, 50

  1. Immigration, then bags

Answer the officer's questions plainly; admission is decided here, not by the ESTA. Returning Visa Waiver travelers with an approved ESTA can use the free Mobile Passport Control app; first-time visitors use the regular line. 51, 7

  2. Get online, then message the hotel

The airport's free Wi-Fi is enough to send the message and activate an eSIM. T-Mobile's U.S. Pass is bought and activated on US soil; download the app at home. 52, 22, 53

  3. AirTrain to Jamaica, then the subway or LIRR

Follow the AirTrain signs toward Jamaica. Tap a contactless card or phone at the Jamaica exit gate ($8.75), then the E train toward Manhattan ($3, same tap), or a separate LIRR ticket to Penn Station or Grand Central ($5.25 off-peak, $7.25 peak). Allow 60 to 90 minutes to a Midtown base. 8, 9, 54, 55

  4. Late, tired or over-bagged: the taxi queue

Use the official rank; drivers who approach you inside arrivals are working outside it. The Manhattan flat fare is $70 plus a $1.50 in state and improvement surcharges, $2.50 below 96th Street, $5 in the weekday rush, tolls and tip. Other boroughs run on the meter. 10

  5. Keep the first afternoon small

Bryant Park and the Public Library for a Midtown base, an early dinner nearby, and the timed museum or the ferry saved for a rested day. If the room is still being cleaned, the hotel will hold the bags. 27

Three regional routes with time to stop

Count nights, not states. Fly into the first city and out of the last.

Open-jaw flights are the single best money decision on a US trip: fly into Boston and out of Washington, or into Las Vegas and out of Phoenix, and every mile moves the trip forward. Keep the final night near the departure airport when a road or a rural train could threaten the flight. These three routes are MMT plans, built from operator schedules, not packages. 2, 1

How much does a US trip cost?

Lodging and the car decide the budget; the fees below are the fixed part, and every one of them was read from the operator on the research date.

Two nonresident adults visiting Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon in one car pay $705 at the gates, or $250 for a Non-Resident Annual Pass. Since 2026 each of those parks charges $35 per car for a week plus $100 per nonresident adult; the pass covers a private vehicle and everyone in it. US citizens and residents pay $105 at the gates or $80 for the America the Beautiful pass. 3, 20, 4, 58, 14

For the rest, compare full quotes, not nightly rates. A cheap room far from a center loses its edge to parking, tolls and rides. Ask a rental company about insurance, extra drivers, one-way fees and toll handling before the counter: the Federal Trade Commission's advice is to check your own auto policy and your credit card's coverage first, and most companies rent from 21 with a daily young-driver fee under 25. 60, 61

When to go: match the season to the region

The country has no off-season, only the wrong region for the month. Spring and autumn suit the Northeast cities and the desert walks; summer is for the mountains and Alaska; winter closes most of Yellowstone's roads to cars and opens them to snowcoaches. Holiday weekends fill rooms regardless of the weather. 62, 1

Wildfire smoke can reach a trip hundreds of miles from the fire; check the destination and the driving corridor in late summer. Lower Yosemite Fall is strongest in spring and early summer and often dry by September. Fee-free park days are for US residents only from 2026, so they no longer change a visitor's dates. 32, 3

Getting around: trains where they work, cars where they don't

Amtrak earns its place on one route: the Northeast Corridor, where stations sit in the middle of the cities you want. Buy each leg for a specific train and keep the ticket offline; each ticket covers one departure. Elsewhere the long-distance trains are the journey itself, and a cross-country ride spends days you may want elsewhere. 2, 37

  • Every city's transit is its own ticket. A New York tap covers New York's subway and buses; Washington's Metro, Amtrak and the AirTrain each take their own payment. Tap a bank card in New York and the old fare cards can stay a mystery. 9, 8
  • Rent a car for rural stops, not for arrival. Foreign-license rules vary by state, so check whether you need an International Driving Permit; rental companies set their own age, deposit and card rules. Download the route before you leave coverage. 63, 61
  • Zion's canyon runs on its shuttle in season, with private cars barred from the scenic drive even before and after the last bus. No ticket, no reservation, real queues. 34
  • Paved and permitted are different words. A rental contract that covers the highway rarely covers the sand of Monument Valley's loop; the Nation's guides drive it. 15

Do I need a visa to visit the United States?

Two doors: ESTA for 42 countries, a visitor visa for everyone else. Both were re-read in September 2026; the rules move, so check the linked page before you pay for flights.

Citizens of the 42 Visa Waiver Program countries apply online for an ESTA, pay $40.27, and can visit for tourism or business for up to 90 days with an electronic passport. Approval is travel authorization, not admission; the officer at the border decides that. A visit to Cuba on or after 12 January 2021 generally removes eligibility, as can dual nationality with certain countries. 6, 5, 7

The State Department's February 2026 notice suspends visa issuance for 39 nationalities with category-specific exceptions, read 12 September 2026; its site blocked automated re-checks on 13 September. Read the notice for your nationality before booking. 64

Health rules can stop you at the gate before any visa does. On 11 September 2026 the CDC's temporary rules bar anyone who was in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the previous 21 days from boarding a commercial flight to the United States, US citizens and transit passengers included; travelers from Uganda and South Sudan face screening and must arrive at designated airports. 69

Declare food, plants and medication; a seller's assurance carries no weight at customs. Children need their own documents and, if traveling without both parents, consent letters. Anyone with a complicated immigration history should settle it with the consulate before buying a nonrefundable trip. 68, 65

Stay connected: a plan that works on the road

T-Mobile's Prepaid U.S. Pass is the visitor product that behaves like one: an eSIM for unlocked phones at $25 for 7 days, $30 for 10 and $35 for 14 plus taxes, no ID, bought and activated once you are in the country. The app wants an email, a PIN and a US ZIP code for service, and the card's real billing ZIP for payment. Cards from only some countries are accepted, so keep the airport Wi-Fi handy. 22, 53

T-Mobile's page refused automated access on 13 September; the figures are from the 12 September read and belong in the confirm-before-you-book list.

The national picture is strong and uneven: Ookla's July 2026 medians put US mobile at 189 Mbps down but under 10 Mbps up, and fixed lines at 305 down and 60 up. A canyon, a rural lodge or an Alaska excursion can have nothing at all. Download park maps, tickets and directions before leaving Wi-Fi, and ask remote operators how they communicate. 70

Health and safety: prepare for the actual activity

Call 911 for any emergency. Medical care is expensive and there is no reciprocal arrangement for most visitors, so buy insurance that names your activities: rescue, evacuation, skiing, remote boating. Carry prescriptions with enough lawful medication for the trip; a foreign prescription may not be dispensed by a US pharmacy. 21

  • Cities: the UK's advice, reviewed 12 September 2026, says violent and gun crime rarely touch tourists; know your route home at night and follow local emergency orders. Neighborhood matters more than the city's reputation. 71
  • Water: regulated tap water is safe unless a local notice says otherwise; the CDC's boil-water, do-not-drink and do-not-use advisories mean different things, and boiling does nothing for chemicals. A park stream is a different question from city water. 72, 73
  • The canyon: the National Park Service warns against hiking rim to river and back in a day; the climb comes second and the heat grows as you descend. Turn around on a clock, not on ambition. 33
  • Wildlife: Yellowstone's rule is 100 yards from bears and wolves, 25 yards from bison, elk and everything else. The bison is the one that surprises people. 74
  • Weather: hurricane season on the Gulf and Atlantic is June to November; wildfire smoke reaches trips far from the fire. Keep a museum or a short accessible walk in reserve for the day the plan cancels. 24

Accessibility and inclusion: confirm the details that matter to you

Plan access door to door, not stop to stop. In New York use the MTA's accessible-station list and live elevator status; many older stations have no step-free route. Amtrak offers accessible seating and assistance by booking, station by station. Ask hotels for the exact room, doorway and bathroom, and the route from the street. 75, 76

  • In the parks: the eastern approach to Lower Yosemite Fall's paved loop is wheelchair accessible when clear of snow; the rest of the loop has gradients and surfaces to check. The Statue of Liberty's crown is reached by narrow stairs with no elevator; the islands, the ferry and the pedestal are separate questions. 32, 29
  • At the airport: request wheelchair or guided assistance from the airline in advance and say what help you need; US rules oblige the airline to provide it. 77
  • LGBTQ+ travelers: same-sex marriage is protected nationwide under Obergefell, and that is a legal floor, not a description of every state's laws or every town's welcome. Check the states on your route and ask local community organizations about venues; the UK advises passport holders whose recorded sex differs from birth to seek consular advice first. 78, 71
  • Solo travelers and families: a well-connected base and a reliable late return matter more than one more attraction; children need their own documents and, traveling with one parent, a consent letter. 68

Everyday courtesy, and visiting Tribal Nations

English gets you everywhere on a first visit, and three phrases do most of the work: 'Is service included?', 'Where does the line start?' and 'Could you write the address down?' 'Check' means bill; 'to go' means takeaway. Ask before photographing a person at work or worship; a ticket to a building buys entry, and consent from the people inside is a separate ask. 19, 79

Tribal Nations are governments, and their parks are theirs. The Navajo Nation runs Monument Valley and licenses its guides; the Havasupai Tribe runs Havasu Falls and its reservation system; the Hualapai Tribe built the Skywalk. Their permits and fees are separate from federal parks. Follow each Nation's own rules on photography, ceremonies and walking, and buy from a named artist or a community-run shop; skip anything labeled 'Native-style'. 15, 16, 36

In Hawaiʻi, learn from Native Hawaiian practitioners and respect places marked kapu or closed; the state tourism authority is blunt: hunting for an unpublicized spot is still trespass. Leave rocks and sand where they are. At a visitor lūʻau, listen for how performers name their own traditions among several Polynesian cultures on the same stage. 79, 46

Alcohol and cannabis rules change at every state line; expect ID checks, and leave every product on the correct side of the international border, whatever the shop says. In places of worship and at memorials, follow the hosts' instructions and lower your voice. 71

Can I stay longer, or work while I'm there?

Your stay is whatever the admission record says, not the visa's expiry. Check the admitted-until date on your online I-94. A B-2 visitor can ask for an extension on Form I-539 with evidence, and approval is a decision, not a formality; Visa Waiver admissions have no extension route, and a hop to Canada, Mexico or the islands uses up the original 90 days instead of restarting them. 50, 80, 7

A tourist admission gives no right to work. The State Department excludes employment from visitor activities, and a laptop full of clients abroad leaves the question open, along with the question of where you owe tax. Naturalization follows years of lawful permanent residence, commonly five, or three through a qualifying spouse, and none of those clocks start on a tourist entry. 65, 81

BEFORE YOU GO

United States travel questions, answered.

Find the practical detail you need, or browse by topic.

How much of the United States can I see in two weeks?

One region, properly. The Northeast route fits four rail-linked cities; the desert loop gives three parks room to breathe; the South gets three cities and a train. Adding both coasts turns sightseeing days into airport days. 1, 2

Which first trip works without a car?

Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington by Amtrak, with each city's own transit locally. Choose hotels near useful stations; a hotel with the city in its name can be an hour from the platform. 2

Should Alaska or Hawaiʻi be added to a mainland trip?

Give either its own week. Alaska's excursions depend on season and weather, and Denali's buses stop at Mile 43 in 2026; Hawaiʻi rewards a single island for a week. A short flight on a map is still an airport day. 23, 39

What is the cheapest way from JFK to Midtown?

AirTrain to Jamaica ($8.75) and the E subway ($3), both paid by tapping a bank card or phone: $11.75 on 13 September 2026. The LIRR from Jamaica is a separate $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 peak ticket and is faster to Penn Station or Grand Central. 8, 9, 54

Is the JFK taxi fare a fixed $70?

The Manhattan flat fare is $70, then surcharges, tolls and tip: 50 cents state, $1 improvement, $2.50 below 96th Street, $5 in the weekday evening rush and a 75-cent congestion toll. Expect roughly $80 to $95 before the tip, depending on tolls and the hour. Other boroughs are on the meter. 10

What if my flight lands very late?

Take the official taxi queue, keep the hotel address on paper, and confirm late check-in in advance. A preselected airport hotel with a shuttle beats improvising a distant connection after midnight. 10, 71

How much does an ESTA cost, and does it guarantee entry?

$40.27: a $10.27 processing fee plus $30 on approval, paid on the official ESTA site. It authorizes travel under the Visa Waiver Program; the border officer decides admission. An approval lasts two years or until the passport expires. 5, 7

Do all visitors need six months left on their passport?

No. The six-month rule has nationality-specific exemptions; British passports, for example, need only cover the stay. A transit country may impose its own rule. 7, 68

Can a past visit to Cuba affect a US holiday?

Yes. Presence in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021 generally removes Visa Waiver eligibility, which means a visa application instead of an ESTA. 7

What are visa bonds?

A refundable bond some B-visa applicants must post, tied to nationality. The program became permanent on 3 August 2026 and immigration counsel report bonds of $10,000 to $20,000 across 50 countries; the consulate's instructions govern. 66, 67

Can recent travel in central Africa stop me boarding?

Yes. As of 11 September 2026 the CDC bars boarding for anyone who was in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the prior 21 days, transit included, and screens arrivals from Uganda and South Sudan at designated airports. Re-check immediately before travel. 69

Do I need a Yosemite reservation in 2026?

No timed-entry reservation this year. Lodging, camping, wilderness permits and Half Dome cables are separate; Half Dome is a lottery at $10 to apply and $10 per person if awarded. 11, 13

Is the $250 nonresident pass worth it?

For two adults visiting three of the eleven surcharge parks in one car, yes: $705 at the gates against $250 for the pass. For one adult visiting one park, the gate wins ($135 against $250). The pass covers the car and its passengers, or the holder plus three adults at per-person sites. 3, 4

Does a national park pass cover Monument Valley?

No. Monument Valley is a Navajo Tribal Park run by the Navajo Nation: $10 per person per day, with the Nation's authorized guides for the valley floor. Havasu Falls and Grand Canyon West are likewise tribal, not federal. 15, 16, 36

How do I get to Havasu Falls?

Through the Havasupai Tribe's reservation system only: $455 per person for a fixed four days and three nights, no transfers or resale, and a 50 percent refund only 90 days out. Older advice about picking up someone else's permit is now a bannable offense. 16

Do I need a permit for Angels Landing or the Zion shuttle?

The shuttle needs nothing but patience. The trail beyond Scout Lookout to Angels Landing needs a permit from the day-before lottery: $6 per application for up to six people, $3 per person if awarded. 34, 12

Can I drive Yellowstone in winter?

Not as a road trip. Most roads close to cars after 31 October 2026, Dunraven Pass on 12 October, and the oversnow season runs 15 December to 15 March with snowcoaches and guided snowmobiles. The Gardiner-to-Cooke City road stays open all year. 62

What should I order for a first New Orleans meal?

A gumbo with rice, chicken-and-andouille or seafood, or a po-boy if you want a sandwich; a muffaletta if you want to share. Ask about stock and shellfish if you have restrictions; the dish name leaves the ingredients open. 42, 43

Do menus list allergens?

Not reliably. Packaged-food labeling rules stop at the package; a made-to-order plate is unlabeled. Name the allergy, ask about fryers and sauces, and order elsewhere if nobody can answer. 48

How much should I tip?

15 to 20 percent at table service, with 20 the easy planning figure. Read the bill for included gratuity first. Counter-service screens are a prompt, not an obligation. 19

Why is the price at the till higher than the shelf?

Sales tax is added at checkout in most states: 8.875% in New York City, with clothing under $110 exempt. Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware and Alaska have no statewide sales tax. 17, 18

Can I set up a US eSIM before I leave home?

T-Mobile's U.S. Pass must be bought and activated inside the United States; install the app at home, then use arrival Wi-Fi. No ID is required for that product. Keep a second way to reach the hotel until it activates. 22, 53

Will my phone work inside the parks?

Count on gaps. Check the operator's map for your lodging, save maps and tickets offline, and ask excursion operators how they communicate beyond coverage, especially in Alaska and the canyons. 70, 71

Can I drink the tap water?

Regulated public water is usually safe unless a local advisory says otherwise. Boil-water, do-not-drink and do-not-use notices mean different things, and boiling handles microbes only; chemical contamination needs a different response. Streams in parks are a separate question. 72, 73

Does travel insurance cover mountain rescue?

Only if the policy says so. Confirm rescue, helicopter evacuation and the specific activity before buying the excursion; the operator's insurance protects the operator. 21

Is the Statue of Liberty crown wheelchair accessible?

No: narrow stairs and no elevator. The ferry, the island paths and the pedestal are separate questions worth asking; the crown is one part of a much larger visit. 29

Can I photograph ceremonies on Tribal Nation land?

Ask the community or organizer first and follow its rules. A park permit or a tour ticket covers the park or the tour; a ceremony, private property and a person's image each need their own permission. The Navajo Nation lists a special-use permit for photography and filming in its parks. 15, 79

Can I reset my 90 days with a trip to Canada or Mexico?

Generally no. A short trip to Canada, Mexico or a nearby island uses the remainder of the original Visa Waiver admission. Plan around the date actually granted. 7

Can I extend a B-2 visit or work remotely on it?

An extension can be requested on Form I-539 with evidence, and approval is a decision made case by case. Employment is excluded from visitor status, and remote work needs its own assessment before travel. 80, 65
