Three monthly budgets for one person before food, built from prices read on 26 and 28 September 2026: coliving rooms, city transport, mobile data, museums and tours.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • A lean month in Bogotá runs USD 547.55 of fixed costs, or USD 18.25 a day: a coliving room from USD 493, a COP 160,000 transit pass and two COP 20,000 data packs. Food and flights go on top. 1, 2, 3, 4
  • The room is nine tenths of that bill. Between the cheapest and the dearest coliving house among the seven houses priced here, the monthly gap is USD 720. Settle the room and the rest is small change. 1, 5
  • Budget in pesos, convert once. The U.S. Treasury put the peso at 3,666.16 to the dollar on 31 March 2026, the newest official quarter published as of 26 September 2026. 4
  • A Bogotá transit pass saves COP 53,000 over a month of two rides a day: COP 160,000 for 65 rides against COP 213,000 in single fares. 2
  • Tayrona closed from 1 to 15 February 2026 by agreement with the Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo peoples of the Sierra Nevada. Build a Caribbean week around their calendar. 6

Start with the room, then everything else

Early in La Candelaria, and the hill behind Bogotá has the light before the street does. Cobbles, a yellow wall, a mural the length of it. A COP 3,550 fare gets you anywhere TransMilenio runs. 2 The pleasure of a month here is how little the fixed part costs, and how much that leaves for the parts you came for.

This page prices the fixed part in three tiers, from figures read on 26 and 28 September 2026. Each line comes from the operator, the city hall or the ministry that sets it. The room goes first because it swamps everything under it.

One line is missing. No grocery basket and no restaurant menu was priced here, so every total below stops before food. Add your own daily food figure and treat these numbers as the floor beneath it. The rest of the country sits in MMT's Colombia guides.

How much does a month in Colombia cost?

Three tiers, all before food, built from the coliving listings, the fare tables and the operator pages read on 26 and 28 September 2026.

From USD 548 to USD 1,315 a month, depending almost entirely on the room. The lean version takes the cheapest Bogotá coliving house on the listings, a transit pass and a free museum Sunday. The comfortable version takes the dearest Medellín house, Metro rides at the bearer fare and a guided tour. Same country, same month, USD 767 apart. 1, 5, 2, 7

Pesos converted at COP 3,666.16 to the dollar, the U.S. Treasury quarterly rate of 31 March 2026. Sixty rides is two a day for 30 days; the lean column's pass buys a block of 65, five more than it needs. Food, drinks, flights into Colombia, domestic flights, insurance and deposits sit outside every column.

What does a month's rent cost in Bogotá and Medellín?

Seven named houses, USD 493 to USD 1,213 a month. These are starting prices on the coliving.com marketplace, read on 28 September 2026, for furnished rooms with utilities and internet included in the listing. Bogotá opens lower and tops out lower. 1, 5

Marketplace listings, and the starting price moves with your dates and room type. These are the first four houses the Bogotá page showed and the first three the Medellín page showed on 28 September 2026, out of 12 and 15 listed. These four Bogotá houses run USD 493 to USD 1,119; the three in Medellín run USD 662 to USD 1,213.

Two named operators publish no price at all. Kiin Living in Medellín and Plura in Bogotá describe their apartments in detail and then hand you a contact form. So the figures above come from a marketplace instead of the houses' own pages, and the only number you can act on is a written quote for your dates.

Get that quote before you compare anything. A month at a listed rate and a month of nightly bookings are different products with different cancellation terms, and MMT's monthly stay versus hotel comparison sets them side by side with the deposits and cleaning fees included.

What is the peso worth for budgeting?

This page converts at COP 3,666.16 to the dollar, and that rate is six months old. It is the U.S. Treasury's quarterly reporting rate for 31 March 2026, the newest quarter published as of 26 September 2026. Say the date out loud when you use it. Six months of Colombian inflation sit between that figure and your card. 4

Banco de la República publishes Colombia's official daily TRM, and that is the rate to check before you send a deposit. The Federal Reserve's weekly H.10 covers about 23 currencies and the peso is not among them, so Treasury's quarterly figure is the newest official U.S. number. 4

What does getting around cost every day?

Two rides a day for 30 days is 60 rides, and 60 is the number that settles your transport line. Bogotá charges COP 3,550 for a single ride on TransMilenio, TransMiCable and TransMiZonal, effective 14 January 2026. Sixty of those cost COP 213,000. The TransMiPass block is COP 160,000 for 65 rides, or COP 2,462 a ride, which saves COP 53,000, about USD 14.46, and leaves five rides spare. 2, 4

Converted at COP 3,666.16 to the dollar, the U.S. Treasury rate of 31 March 2026. The TransMiPass block buys 65 rides, five more than the 60 priced here. Medellín Metro fares are as reported from the Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá's announcement; confirm at a station window.

Medellín runs two prices on the same train. The bearer or occasional fare is COP 4,400; reporting puts the frequent-user fare at COP 3,820. Across 60 rides the gap is COP 34,800. Both Medellín columns above use COP 4,400, the fare that needs no registration. 7

Metro de Medellín issues its personalized Cívica card to foreign visitors on a passport or a Colombian cédula de extranjería, at customer points in the Niquía, Acevedo, San Javier, Itagüí and San Antonio stations, weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Ask there which fare the card carries. 11

City buses and busetas in Medellín charge COP 3,800, microbuses COP 3,900, effective 10 January 2026, so a bus day runs a little under a Metro day at the bearer fare. 10 Bogotá's personalized TuLlave card carries free transfers inside a 125-minute window, which quietly turns some two-ride days into one. 2

Do I need a visa for a month in Colombia?

A month fits inside the tourist permit with two months to spare. Colombia grants the Permiso de Turismo at the border to nationalities that travel visa-free, for up to 90 calendar days. The ceiling worth knowing is annual: extensions stop at 180 calendar days inside one calendar year, counted across every visit. Stack six Colombian months in one year and you meet it. 12

  1. File Check-Mig, twice

Colombia's free online migration form opens 72 hours before your flight and closes one hour before it. File it for the flight in and again for the flight out. 13

  2. Buy a data pack on day one

Tigo's own prepaid page showed COP 20,000 for 20 GB over 20 days on 26 September 2026, a promotional doubling of its usual 10 GB, with packs from COP 9,000. Two of those cover a 30-day stay. 3

  3. Load a transit card in your first week

In Bogotá, a personalized TuLlave card and a COP 160,000 TransMiPass block. In Medellín, a Cívica card at a station customer point, on your passport. 2, 11

  4. Check the park calendar before the coast

Tayrona shuts for weeks at a time by agreement with the peoples of the Sierra Nevada. Confirm the current window before you book a Santa Marta week. 6

A tourist permit covers travel. Working from Colombia for an employer at home is a separate question with separate answers, and the honest place to start is MMT's guide to tourist entry versus permission to work.

Plan the Caribbean week around the Tayrona closures

Tayrona National Natural Park closed from 1 to 15 February 2026 and reopened on 16 February. It was the first of three closures the park runs in a typical year, set with the Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, alongside the park's own visitor monitoring and IDEAM climate modelling. The 2026 window carries the name Kugkui Shikasa. 6

The four peoples' governments and the park authority set these dates together, and the same agreement produced a closure from 19 October to 2 November 2023, called Nabbatashi. 14 The scale behind the calendar: 818,003 people entered Tayrona in 2025. 6

What these totals leave out

Food, flights and long-distance travel are all missing on purpose. Food is the line you fill yourself. One week of real receipts in Bogotá will tell you more than any published average.

  • Domestic flights and buses. A month across Bogotá, Medellín and the Caribbean coast needs three or four internal hops, none of them priced here. MMT's one-month Colombia itinerary sets the route those hops serve.
  • Culture is the cheapest line you have. Museo del Oro, at Parque de Santander in central Bogotá, charges foreign visitors COP 21,000, about USD 5.73, and opens free to everyone on Sundays. The museum also admits Indigenous visitors, children under 12, people over 62 and people with disabilities free every day, as its own published policy. The resident-guided Graffiti Tour in Comuna 13 lists at COP 40,000, about USD 10.91. Both together come to under USD 17. 8, 15, 9, 4
  • Insurance and deposits. Both are real monthly lines, and both depend on your passport, your age and your dates, so price them yourself.
  • A desk, if you work through the month. Coworking is a separate line from the room, and MMT's remote-work travel budget prices the spaces that publish their rates.

Fill those four lines and you have a real number. Leave them out and you have the floor: USD 548 a month says a great deal about what a Colombian year could look like.

Frequently asked questions

What is a realistic daily budget for Colombia in 2026?

Take the fixed month and divide it by 30. The lean Bogotá column works out at USD 18.25 a day for room, transport and data. The middle Medellín column is USD 35.55 and the comfortable one USD 43.82. Food, drinks, domestic flights and any tours beyond the two priced here go on top of all three. 1, 5, 2, 7, 3

Is Medellín cheaper than Bogotá for a month?

On the listings for both cities, Bogotá opens lower. The cheapest Bogotá coliving house listed from USD 493 a month against USD 662 in Medellín, and the top of each range sits at USD 1,119 and USD 1,213. Transport costs about USD 28 more a month in Medellín at 60 rides. 1, 5, 2, 7

How many pesos to the dollar should I budget with?

Convert at COP 3,666.16, the U.S. Treasury quarterly reporting rate for 31 March 2026 and the newest official quarter as of 26 September 2026. It is six months old, so check your bank's live rate before you send a deposit. Banco de la República publishes Colombia's official daily TRM. 4

Is a Bogotá transit pass worth it for a month?

Above about 46 rides in the month, yes. The TransMiPass block costs COP 160,000, and 45 single rides at COP 3,550 come to COP 159,750, so a lighter month of sightseeing is cheaper paid ride by ride. The block loads onto a personalized TuLlave card, the same card that carries the 125-minute free transfer window. 2

How long can I stay in Colombia as a tourist?

Up to 90 calendar days on the Permiso de Turismo granted at the border, for nationalities that travel visa-free. Extensions stop at 180 calendar days inside one calendar year, counted across every visit, continuous or split. A single month uses about a third of the initial permit. 12

Do I have to fill in Check-Mig before flying?

Yes, for every flight into and out of Colombia. The form is free on Migración Colombia's own site and accepts filings from 72 hours before departure until one hour before it. File it twice, once each way, and keep the confirmation on your phone for the gate. 13

When does Tayrona National Natural Park close?

The first 2026 closure ran from 1 to 15 February, with reopening on 16 February. The park sets these windows with the Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo peoples of the Sierra Nevada, and a typical year carries three of them. In 2023 the third ran from 19 October to 2 November. Confirm the current dates on the park's own news page before booking. 6, 14

How much are museums and tours in Colombia?

Colombian nationals and resident foreigners pay COP 10,000 at Bogotá's Museo del Oro, students COP 5,000, and the audioguide is a separate COP 8,000. Foreign visitors pay COP 21,000, about USD 5.73, and nobody pays on a Sunday. Entry is free every day for Indigenous visitors, children under 12, adults over 62 and people with disabilities. Medellín's resident-guided Comuna 13 tour is the other COP 40,000 in the culture line. 8, 9, 4
