France travel guide
Choose between a Lyon food trip, Normandy history, Provence markets or time by the Mediterranean, then build a route with room to enjoy it.
- For a first trip, allow 7-9 nights for Paris and one region. Shift nights toward the food, museums or outdoor days that brought you here.
- Lyon is an easy second base: the direct TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon reaches Lyon Part-Dieu in 1 hour 56 minutes (the 09:00, arriving 10:56, on 25 September 2026). 1, 2
- Choose tickets by eligibility and season. The Louvre, Versailles and Sainte-Chapelle have different adult price categories. 3, 4, 5
- Most visitors from outside the EU now give fingerprints and a photo at the Schengen border (EES, running since 10 April 2026). ETIAS, the EUR 20 online authorisation for visa-free travellers, is not running yet, and the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead. 6, 7, 8

Where should you go on a first trip to France?
Start with the days you want to have. A morning in the Louvre and a long lunch in Lyon make one kind of trip. Normandy’s remembrance beaches make another. Nice offers markets, art museums and a waterfront lined with pebble beaches. Choose the experience that deserves your time, then draw the route around it. 3, 18, 19, 20
For a first visit, the simplest plan is Paris plus one region. Give Paris 4 or 5 nights, then stay put somewhere else long enough to unpack. With 12-14 nights, a third base becomes reasonable.
| Base | Main draw |
|---|---|
| Lyon | Food and city walks |
| Bayeux, Normandy | D-Day remembrance and the coast |
| Avignon or Marseille | Papal heritage, markets or the Calanques |
| Nice | Old-town markets, art and pebble beaches |
| Loire Valley | Châteaux, gardens and cycling |
| Corsica | An island stay |
Lyon suits a food-focused city break. From Bayeux, arrange transport to each remembrance site. In Provence, choose city sights or village outings before choosing a base. For Nice, plan onward coastal trips separately. In the Loire, pick a manageable cycling section. For Corsica, book arrival and onward island travel together.
Normandy is a strong choice when remembrance is the purpose of the journey. Give individual sites time instead of treating them as stops between photographs. Bayeux remains a useful planning base, but the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, home of the town’s famous embroidery, closed on 1 September 2025, and rebuilding runs to autumn 2027. You cannot see the embroidery in Bayeux in 2026. 18, 24

Provence asks for a more specific choice. Avignon makes sense for the Palais des Papes and a heritage-led stay. Marseille brings the Mucem and a possible Calanques outing into the plan. Pick the base closest to your priorities, then solve the village or trail transport before reserving a distant room. 21
For a gentler cycling focus, browse the official Loire Valley route ideas. Châteaux, vineyards and villages give you reasons to stop. Plan a short section around your fitness and luggage arrangements, with time left to stop along the way. 23
Nice works best when you want the sea woven into a city stay: a market morning in Vieux-Nice, time with art and a walk beside the pebble shore. Keep those pleasures in the plan before adding day trips. If every morning begins with a departure, the base has become a place to sleep instead of a place to enjoy. 20
For Normandy, decide what remembrance means to your party before choosing sites. A family connection, a particular beach or time to read museum displays will lead to different days. Share those priorities with any tour provider and ask how much time the itinerary leaves at each stop. The region's memorial beaches deserve more than a drive past. 18
The Loire Valley offers a different balance of movement and lingering. Put a château or garden visit inside a cycling day, then ask where the bikes and bags will go while you stop. A shorter ride gives you room for lunch and a visit without watching the clock. Choose that rhythm before choosing the length of the route. 23
Four routes with time to stop
Count complete days between hotel changes. An 8-night trip with two bases gives you time to repeat a favourite walk or leave an afternoon open. These suggested routes use published rail connections. Choose a departure that fits both hotels, with time for luggage, station access and the first meal at your next stop. 1, 26, 27, 28
- 01
- 02Lyon3 nights
Build the second half around food and a slower city rhythm. Choose a few meals deliberately instead of reserving every hour. 19
→ Plan departure from Lyon, or allow a separate return journey to the airport you have booked.
With less time: With 6 nights, choose Paris alone or shorten both stays only after checking your arrival and departure times.
- 01Paris5 nights
Keep the arrival day light and spread major sights across the remaining days.
→ Train to Bayeux; the timetable checked on 24 September showed a fastest journey of 2 hours 12 minutes. 26 - 02
- 03Mont-Saint-Michel area2 nights
Leave room for the village and, if suitable for your mobility, the abbey above it. 25
→ Work backwards from your onward train or flight and allow a return buffer.
With less time: With 7 or 8 nights, keep Paris and Bayeux. Save Mont-Saint-Michel for a trip that gives the onward journey enough time.
- 01
- 02Avignon5 nights
Build a Provence stay around papal heritage and selected outings. Confirm transport before adding villages to the calendar. 21
→ Choose your departure station carefully and price the complete onward journey.
With less time: If Marseille and the Calanques are the main draw, choose a Marseille-based Provence plan instead of forcing both bases into a short stay.
- 01Paris5 nights
Give the capital a proper opening chapter.
→ Book the Paris-Lyon train that fits your checkout and arrival plans. 1 - 02
- 03Nice5 nights
Allow separate time for Vieux-Nice, Cours Saleya, museums and the waterfront. 20
→ Compare departure from Nice with the full cost and time of returning to Paris.
With less time: With 9 nights, choose Paris and Nice or Paris and Lyon. Keep Lyon-Nice as a substantial travel day.
If the Riviera has you considering another country, read the Italy travel guide before adding nights across the border. Decide which coast deserves the stay. A new country should earn its place through what you want to do there, not through the appearance of a short line on a map.
Test the route against your least convenient day. Write out checkout, the trip to the station, the booked train, arrival at the next property and the first meal there. If that sequence leaves little room for delay, move a booking or cut a stop before paying. A later train can be a better choice when it lets you leave calmly.
When is the best time to visit France?
Match the season to the region. France has oceanic, continental, Mediterranean and mountain climate zones. A packing list for Normandy will not answer the same questions as one for Provence or the Alps. Choose your main activity first, then check the weather and operating season for that place. 29
| Trip | Start planning with |
|---|---|
| Paris and Lyon | Spring or early autumn; check openings |
| Normandy coast | Flexible outdoor days |
| Provence and Nice | Sightseeing or beach time as the priority |
| Alpine hiking | Current trail and lift conditions |
| Skiing | A named resort and its winter operations |
Normandy has oceanic weather. In Provence and Nice, check heat and outdoor-access warnings. For Alpine hiking, check remaining snow and route suitability; for skiing, check resort operations and mountain conditions. Compare actual room quotes for your dates.
For Paris and Lyon, spring and early autumn are useful starting choices for a mix of walks and indoor visits. Put the Louvre on a day it opens and build meals around your booked train. An exhibition or family date can settle the month; after that, choose the room and route that work for those dates. 3, 1
In summer, check Météo-France Vigilance for each region you will cross. Heat and dangerous weather can change a day’s priorities. In the Calanques, a reservation does not override a fire closure. Keep an indoor alternative that you would actually enjoy, so a changed plan still feels like a holiday. 16, 30
Normandy’s oceanic climate calls for a plan that can swap coast and indoor time. Keep remembrance visits on the days that best suit your group and the local forecast. For a Mont-Saint-Michel stay, separate the village from the abbey visit: the village is free to enter, while the abbey has a ticket and a stepped approach. 29, 18, 25
In Provence, choose an indoor stop you want to see before a heat warning forces the choice. The Palais des Papes gives an Avignon stay a focus; Marseille has the Mucem. Move outdoor walks around the current warning and your party’s needs, and check the journey back before setting off. 21, 16
- For Nice, decide how much time belongs to Cours Saleya, art museums and the pebble shore. That balance helps you choose which day to move when the forecast changes. 20, 16
- For the Calanques, keep a Marseille city day free to swap with a planned walk. Fire restrictions can cancel access even when you hold a Sugiton reservation. 21, 30
- For Chamonix, the Aiguille du Midi closes from 2 November to 18 December 2026; in season, check the operating notice before setting the mountain day. Keep warm layers ready and plan your other outings around the lift’s actual status. 31, 32
Paris: book the anchor, leave space around it
Choose one major booking for each full day. Treat the Louvre, Eiffel Tower and Sainte-Chapelle as anchors, then leave the rest of that day flexible. These attractions have their own admission conditions and booking systems. A sequence that looks neat on a screen still needs time for travel, security and a meal. 3, 33, 5

The Louvre’s normal schedule, checked on 24 September 2026, is closed Tuesday; 09:00-18:00 on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday; and 09:00-21:00 on Wednesday and Friday. Check the museum’s current hours before choosing your day. Pick the collection you care about most instead of measuring the visit by how much ground you cover. 3
- For the Louvre, check the admission category for every traveller before buying. Age, citizenship or residence can affect eligibility. 3
- For the Eiffel Tower, choose both the level and the access method. Second-floor, summit, stairs and lift tickets are different products. 33
- For Sainte-Chapelle, reserve a timed slot even if you already hold a ticket. 5
- For Versailles, match the Passport ticket to the season and your eligibility. 4
Use the operator’s Eiffel Tower tariff sheet to compare access options before booking. A summit ticket only makes sense if that level is suitable for everyone in your party. The operator excludes visitors with reduced mobility from the summit for safety reasons. 33
Do you need a visa or ETIAS for France?
Check entry using your own travel document. Visa requirements depend on nationality, residence, document and purpose. Start with France-Visas, then follow the instructions for your circumstances. For travellers covered by Schengen short-stay rules, the limit is 90 days within any 180-day period, whether a visa is required or not. 9
Count relevant time across the Schengen area, not just nights in France. Put earlier trips into your calculation before extending this one. If a longer European journey includes Britain, use the United Kingdom travel guide to plan that destination separately while keeping your France entry check tied to France-Visas. 9
| System | Status |
|---|---|
| EES | Fully operational since 10 April 2026 |
| ETIAS | Not running yet; scheduled for the last quarter of 2026, start date still to be announced |
EES records passport details, facial images, fingerprints and entry/exit data for covered non-EU short-stay travellers at external Schengen borders; exemptions apply. ETIAS will cost EUR 20, and the EU says it will announce the start date several months before launch. Check the official status before travel and use France-Visas for your nationality, document, residence and purpose.
Read the European Commission’s EES and ETIAS explanation before departure. Save the official page so you can return to the source when the launch status changes. This guide covers mainland France and Corsica, not France’s overseas regions. 9, 6
What should you do after landing at Charles de Gaulle?
Make the first journey easy to follow while tired. Save the accommodation address and arrival instructions offline. Decide on your route before reaching the ticket machine, especially if you need step-free travel. Paris airport journeys use a different ticket from ordinary local Metro-Train-RER journeys. 10, 11, 34
Reach the RER B station for your terminal
From Terminal 1, take CDGVAL to Terminal 3-Roissypole for Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 1 station. From Terminal 3, follow the walking signs to that station. From Terminal 2, follow signs to Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV and the RER B; from 2G, first take the N2 shuttle to 2F. 35
Load the airport ticket
The 2026 full-price Paris Region-Airports ticket costs EUR 14. Buy it at a station machine or desk on Navigo Easy, or use the Île-de-France Mobilités or Bonjour RATP app with a compatible phone. Use a separate medium if yours still holds t+ or Metro-Train-RER tickets. Check an existing pass before buying again. 36, 10
Take RER B toward Paris
Check the platform display for a Paris-bound train. Gare du Nord and Châtelet-les-Halles are possible interchanges; choose the stop that fits your address. Enter the full address and arrival time in the journey planner, then check the final line, direction and walking route before boarding. 35
Check access and protect your bags
For step-free travel, check each station, interchange and lift on the route. Keep passport, cards and phone in separate pockets or bags, and keep a backup payment method apart. UK travel advice reports pickpockets on the Métro, RER and at mainline stations, and several serious assaults on RER B, the line that serves both Paris airports and Gare du Nord. 34, 37
| Ticket | Price (EUR) |
|---|---|
| Paris Region-Airports | 14.00 |
| Metro-Train-RER | 2.55 |
| Bus-Tram | 2.05 |
Paris Region-Airports covers eligible airport journeys by metro, train, RER and Orlyval. Metro-Train-RER covers ordinary eligible rail journeys; airport rail requires the airport product or a valid pass. Bus-Tram covers eligible bus and tram journeys. Extra trips, any ticket-medium cost and services outside each product’s validity are excluded. Single tickets only.
Plan for the time between reaching the property and getting into the room. Ask about luggage storage and the actual check-in window, especially when your flight arrives early. Save the reply beside the address. A nearby meal becomes a useful first stop when it gives everyone a rest without requiring another long journey with bags.
If the flight lands late, check the travel-date journey planner and the property's arrival arrangements together before settling on rail. Compare any alternative using a current quote for your destination and party. Keep the quoted fare, luggage terms and meeting instructions with the booking, so a tired traveller has a complete plan to follow.
Trains between bases, a separate plan beyond them
Choose the stations before comparing journey times. For a Paris and Lyon city stay, start with Gare de Lyon and Lyon Part-Dieu. For Provence, compare Avignon TGV with the full journey into town. Lyon-Nice takes a larger part of the day. Check departure, arrival and changes together before paying. 1, 27, 28
| Journey | Train time |
|---|---|
| Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part-Dieu (A) | 1h 56m |
| Paris to Bayeux (B) | 2h 12m |
| Paris Gare de Lyon to Avignon TGV (C) | 2h 39m |
| Lyon to Nice (D) | 4h 33m |
A: Direct 09:00-10:56 service on 25 September 2026. B: Published minimum for 25 September; plan onward remembrance-site travel separately. C: Direct TGV 10:38-13:17 on 25 September 2026; Avignon TGV and Avignon Centre are separate stations. D: SNCF’s advertised fastest time; some trains are direct and some need a change, so check stations and changes on your chosen departure. Times exclude station access, waiting, delays and onward local travel. Recheck for your travel date.
A car earns its place when it solves a specific part of your itinerary. Before renting, list the outings you cannot sensibly arrange from your base. Compare complete rental terms, parking arrangements and the number of days you would actually drive.
For Provence villages and Normandy remembrance sites, plan the last part of each outing before fixing your accommodation. Write down both the outward and return journey. If you choose a tour, compare its exact stops with your interests. A long list of places is less useful than enough time at the one that matters to you. 18, 21
How much do the named attractions cost?
Price the choices you will actually make. The comparison below uses one full-price adult and six specific purchases, checked on 24 September 2026. It helps you choose between visits and see what is being bought. Accommodation, meals and intercity travel still need separate quotes. 11, 3, 33, 4, 5, 25
Table view: Six purchases, six different prices
| Item | Value (EUR) |
|---|---|
| Paris airport ticket | €14 |
| Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey | €16 |
| Sainte-Chapelle, non-EEA | €22 |
| Louvre, non-EEA | €32 |
| Versailles Passport, high season | €35 |
| Eiffel summit by lift | €36.70 |
Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey drops to EUR 13 on 1 October 2026. Source: 11, 25, 5, 3, 4, 33
| Purchase | Price (EUR) |
|---|---|
| Airport ticket (A) | 14.00 |
| Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey (B) | 16.00 |
| Sainte-Chapelle (C) | 22.00 |
| Louvre (D) | 32.00 |
| Versailles Passport (E) | 35.00 |
| Eiffel summit by lift (F) | 36.70 |
| All six listed purchases | 155.70 |
A: One full-price Paris Region-Airports ticket. B: Adult individual abbey admission through 30 September 2026; village entry is free. C: Adult who is neither an EEA national nor a qualifying resident; timed booking required. D: Adult who is neither an EEA citizen nor resident, general admission. E: Standard high-season Passport, 1 April-31 October 2026. F: Adult lift-to-summit ticket, including 10% VAT. Total: 14.00 + 16.00 + 22.00 + 32.00 + 35.00 + 36.70 = EUR 155.70. This illustrative sum excludes lodging, food, regional rail, other local transport, tourist tax, discounts, free-entry eligibility, temporary-exhibition supplements, audio guides and separate booking fees.
Use the eligibility table before multiplying prices by your group size. The EEA is the European Economic Area. Bring the proof each operator requires for the category you select. A lower adult price and free admission are separate questions, and the conditions differ between attractions. 3, 4, 5
| Ticket or category | Price (EUR) |
|---|---|
| Louvre, EEA (A) | 22.00 |
| Louvre, qualifying free entry (A) | 0.00 |
| Sainte-Chapelle, EEA (B) | 16.00 |
| Versailles, standard low season (C) | 25.00 |
| Versailles, EEA high season (C) | 32.00 |
| Versailles, EEA low season (C) | 22.00 |
| Eiffel second floor, lift (D) | 23.50 |
| Eiffel second floor, stairs (D) | 14.80 |
| Eiffel stairs plus summit lift (D) | 28.00 |
| Mont-Saint-Michel, next season (E) | 13.00 |
A: Louvre EUR 22 applies to EEA citizens or residents. Free-entry examples include under-18s and qualifying EEA residents under 26; bring required proof. B: Sainte-Chapelle EUR 16 applies to EEA nationals or regular residents of an EEA country for over 4 months. Reserve a timed slot even with a ticket. Check the Sainte-Chapelle ticket conditions and bring proof supporting nationality or qualifying residence. C: Versailles high season is 1 April-31 October; low season is 1 November-31 March. EEA citizenship or residence and proof are required for the discounted Passport. D: Eiffel adult prices include 10% VAT; the combined option uses stairs to the second floor, then the summit lift. E: Abbey rate for 1 October 2026-31 March 2027. Optional extras and separate booking fees are excluded.
Compare paid sights by the part you want to experience. If your aim is the view from the Eiffel Tower's second floor, price that ticket first; if the summit is the point, keep its full cost and access conditions in the plan. The same approach helps with passes: list the visits you will make before comparing the product with separate tickets. 33
Choose the room by the journey outside its door
Choose a room that fits your Lyon days. For the food-focused route, compare two named options on the Presqu’île. Hôtel de l’Abbaye is in Ainay, between Place Bellecour and Perrache station. Citadines Presqu’île Lyon is at 2 rue Thomassin and offers studios and apartments with kitchens. These give you a concrete hotel-versus-apartment choice to price for your own dates. 39, 40
| Property | Reason to consider it |
|---|---|
| Hôtel de l’Abbaye | Ainay base between Bellecour and Perrache |
| Citadines Presqu’île Lyon | A kitchen for meals at the apartment |
Ask each property for the same dates and guest count. Compare the complete quote, cancellation terms, check-in arrangements and the exact room’s access. Room prices are date-specific; obtain a current quote.
At Citadines, the listed kitchen includes a hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. The property also lists a 24-hour reception, with breakfast and laundry among paid extras. For a longer Lyon stay, compare those services with how often you expect to cook. A kitchen earns its place in the budget when you plan to use it. 40
Tourist tax varies by commune and accommodation classification. Under the actual-tax method, it is separate from the room price. Île-de-France also applies a 200% regional supplement to the relevant tax base, not to the hotel bill. Ask the property for the full tourist-tax amount and use the official local calculator linked through Service Public. 38
- For a hotel, check arrival hours, luggage storage, breakfast timing and cancellation terms against your booked train. Keep any amount payable on arrival beside the room quote.
- For an apartment, confirm kitchen equipment, cleaning charges and key collection. For a longer stay, ask about laundry, cooling and heating for your dates.
- For a guesthouse, agree on meals and arrival with the host. For a rural Normandy or Provence base, arrange parking or transfers, food on arrival and the return from each outing before reserving. 18, 21
In Paris, compare the room with your actual museum bookings and onward station. Trace the route with luggage and check lifts if steps are a barrier. For Avignon, put the Palais des Papes and planned village outings on the same map before choosing between a town room and a rural stay. Let those journeys guide the booking. 34, 21
Eat by region, and read the bill with confidence
Give a meal the same attention as a museum. Lyon is a strong second base when food is the point of the trip. In Nice, Cours Saleya and the old town offer a different focus; Provence adds markets to a heritage itinerary. Choose what you want to taste locally rather than chasing a single national menu. 19, 20, 21
In Lyon, start with the tourist office’s guide to local dishes. Quenelles come plain or with pike. Cervelle de canut is a fresh-cheese preparation with garlic and herbs, despite a name that might suggest something else. Ask how the kitchen prepares the dish you are ordering. 41
Make your first food day easy: choose one dish you are curious about, then keep the other meal flexible. If a market visit is central to the plan, confirm its operating day before assigning it a morning. Leave room to buy something small and sit down, instead of making every meal another reservation to reach.
- Displayed restaurant prices include taxes and service. Read the menu and bill before adding anything. 12
- A carafe of tap water is free for restaurant customers. Ask specifically for tap water when that is what you want. 12
- Tips are optional. Decide what you want to leave after checking the bill. 13
- Written allergen information must be directly accessible for dishes served on site. Ask for that information rather than relying on a short menu description. 42
Begin interactions with a greeting, ask before photographing someone at work, and leave doorways clear while looking at a menu or map. At a busy stall, have your order ready and step aside once served. Give the people working there room to look after the next customer.
Nice gives you different dishes to look for. Socca is made with chickpea flour; pissaladière combines onions, anchovies and black olives on a tart base. Use the official Nice food ideas to choose what interests you, then ask the seller about the actual ingredients and preparation. A familiar-looking snack still deserves that check when you have dietary needs. 20, 42
Let the meal plan follow the day. A sit-down lunch works when you have time to stay; a market visit works when you have somewhere to eat what you buy. Check the chosen place's serving hours before committing a museum slot around it. Keep drinks and extras in your own meal allowance, using the displayed menu to make the choice. 12
The Alps, the Calanques and Corsica need their own plans
Reserve time for the conditions you find. A mountain lift, a coastal path and an island transfer each have different constraints. Choose the activity, establish how you will reach it, then check the current operating or access notice. A general France itinerary is only the starting point for these days. 30, 31, 22
| Chamonix to Aiguille du Midi | Price (EUR) |
|---|---|
| Standard adult return | 83.00 |
| Advance web return 32, 43 | From 60.20 |
| Adult one-way | 61.00 |
Advance web return: dynamic fare for online purchases at least 3 days before the visit (D-3), subject to availability; adult returns run from EUR 60.20 to EUR 83.00 depending on the date. Reservations are free and mandatory. From 28 September to 1 November 2026 the lift runs daily between 08:10 and 16:30. Check live prices and weather-dependent operations before buying. The EUR 61 ticket covers one direction. Travel to Chamonix, lodging, equipment and other activities are excluded.
For Sugiton and Pierres Tombées, free reservations were required on 20-21 June, daily from 27 June to 30 August, and on 5-6 and 12-13 September 2026. For a later summer, use the park’s newly published dates when setting your booking reminder. 30
Under the published system, reservations open at 09:00 three days before a visit and close at 18:00 the day before, for groups of up to five. Fire restrictions can still cancel access. Check both the reservation and the access notice before leaving for the trail. 30
Corsica deserves a separate stretch of the holiday. The tourism authority lists year-round arrival by air and sea, with services from mainland France and Italy. Choose the arrival port or airport alongside your first base, then check Corsica transport options. Reserve the crossing and island stay as one connected plan. 22
Corsican rail links Ajaccio, Bastia, Corte and Calvi, including some mountain villages. Use those towns to shape a car-free stay, then check the timetable for the days you will travel. The Corsica rail overview helps you choose a base; confirm local transport to the room, beaches and walks before booking. 44
How accessible is the journey you want to make?
Check access from the room to the destination and back. RATP identifies line 14 as fully accessible for wheelchair users. Buses, trams and parts of the RER also offer options, but individual stops, interchanges and lifts need checking. Avoid planning on the assumption that the whole Paris Métro is step-free. 34
Choose a workable base
Trace the route from the accommodation entrance to the transport stop. Ask the property about the exact room and access route before booking.
Arrange rail assistance
For eligible disabled travellers and people with reduced mobility, SNCF Assist’enGare is free and guaranteed when booked at least 24 hours ahead. Bring a valid ticket and reach the assistance point at least 30 minutes before departure; Eurostar London journeys require 60 minutes. 15
Check each attraction’s limit
Ask about the part of the attraction you want to visit, not just its entrance. The Eiffel Tower summit has reduced-mobility restrictions in the operator’s tariff document. 33
Build a fallback journey
Keep an alternative route ready for a lift outage or an unsuitable interchange. Recheck the transport information close to departure. 34
Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey stands above the village, reached by many steps, and is difficult for visitors with reduced mobility. The monument estimates a 45-60-minute walk from parking to the abbey. Allow more time if needed and discuss the approach with your party before choosing an abbey ticket. 25
Stay connected, travel safely and leave room for local life
Prepare for the problems your route actually presents. In Paris, secure bags and phones on the Métro, RER and at stations. Keep valuables close when a crowd or distraction pulls your attention elsewhere. Before a transfer, check for industrial action and service disruption, then save the operator’s current travel information. 37
For a medical emergency, call 112 and ask for an ambulance. Arrange insurance that covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation; do not assume healthcare will be free. If skiing, hiking or another activity matters to the holiday, ask the insurer whether that exact activity and location are covered. 14
For phone service, use Arcep’s coverage comparison to inspect the route you plan to take. It compares the four main operators for calls, mobile internet and transport quality. Look at the village or island base as well as the arrival city before choosing a plan. 17
- Save accommodation details, tickets and essential maps offline before a transfer.
- Check the weather and any site-specific closure notice before an outdoor day. 16, 30
- Keep emergency and insurance contact details somewhere accessible without relying on one phone.
- At memorials and places of worship, follow the host’s instructions and make space for other visitors.
- Ask before photographing a person, and respect private entrances and closed paths.
Treat a town as a place where people live between your visits. Keep noise down near homes, take rubbish with you and buy from businesses whose work interests you. At a remembrance site, let the purpose of the place set the pace. Leave enough unplanned time to notice where you are.
France travel questions, answered.
Find the practical detail you need, or browse by topic.
Can you visit France without renting a car?
Paris and Lyon make a practical city-based rail trip. Search Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part-Dieu: a direct service on the 25 September 2026 timetable takes 1 hour 56 minutes. Plan the room-to-station journeys as well, and arrange transport for rural outings before adding them. 1
Is ETIAS required for France now?
Does leaving France reset the Schengen short-stay allowance?
Plan around the shared limit of 90 days within any 180-day period for travellers covered by the short-stay rules. Moving between Schengen countries does not create a new allowance. Check your previous travel and your own visa conditions through France-Visas. 9
Can I load an airport ticket beside ordinary Paris rail tickets?
Use another Navigo Easy pass or compatible phone if your current ticket medium still holds t+ or Metro-Train-RER tickets. RATP says the Paris Region-Airports product cannot share that medium with those tickets. Check what is already loaded before buying, including before the return to the airport. 36
Can I change a Sainte-Chapelle ticket if my plans move?
The monument’s FAQ says tickets are neither exchangeable nor refundable. Settle the date before buying, especially if the visit follows a flight or intercity train. For a purchase through another seller, address the request to that seller and read its terms. 45
Can I visit Sainte-Chapelle with my suitcase after checkout?
Leave it elsewhere first. Sainte-Chapelle has no cloakroom or luggage storage and excludes luggage. Ask your hotel about holding the bag or arrange storage before the visit, then allow time to retrieve it before your train. 45
How late can I enter the Louvre on an evening opening?
Normal Wednesday and Friday closing is 21:00. Last entry is 1 hour before closing, and rooms begin clearing 30 minutes before closing. On that schedule, plan entry by 20:00 and expect clearing from 20:30. Book an earlier slot for a longer visit and check the day’s notice. 3
Does the rail assistance meeting time change for Eurostar London?
Yes. SNCF specifies arrival at the assistance meeting point at least 60 minutes before a Eurostar London departure, compared with its standard 30-minute rule. Keep your assistance confirmation and valid travel ticket together, and follow any additional instructions supplied for your journey. 15
