Why Salento is the stop between the cities
A row of Willys jeeps waits on Plaza de Bolívar most mornings, benches filling with hikers. About twenty-five minutes later they stop at the head of the Cocora Valley, where wax palms rise out of cattle pasture on both sides of the road. Salento is the town those jeeps come back to. Coffee farms sit on the slopes below it, Calle 5 climbs past painted balconies, and the road out puts you back toward Medellín or Bogotá by evening. 7
The palms have legal standing. Colombia's Congress declared the Quindío wax palm the national tree and a patriotic symbol in Ley 61 of 1985, and the same law makes felling one a criminal offense punishable by fine. 1 In 2011 UNESCO inscribed Colombia's Paisaje Cultural Cafetero, World Heritage list entry 1121, six component sites across Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca, and the country around Salento is part of it. 9
Most travelers give Salento two nights inside a longer Colombian trip. That buys one hike day, one farm morning and an afternoon in town. The wider route, the flights between cities and the month's budget sit in MMT's Colombia country guide.
How do you get to Salento from Medellín or Bogotá?
Every route ends in a car, a jeep or a bus. The choice is time against money.
Salento has no airport, so the last leg is always road. From Medellín the two real options split cleanly. Flying to Pereira and driving in takes roughly 1 hour 50 minutes to 3 hours 25 minutes door to door. The single direct bus, run by Flota Occidental, takes about 7 hours 30 minutes over 272 km of mountain road. 6
| Route | How | Time | From, USD | What the fare covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medellín to Salento | Fly MDE to PEI, then road | 1h50 to 3h25 door to door | 46 | Flight leg only; Avianca and LATAM fly it nonstop in 45 to 50 minutes |
| Medellín to Salento | Direct bus, Flota Occidental | about 7h30 | 24 | The only operator running the route without a change |
| Pereira airport to Salento | Private taxi | about 1h15 over 44 km | 76 | Economy car, up to 3 passengers |
| Pereira airport to Salento | Airport bus, then Salento bus | about 1h30 | 5 | Two legs through Pereira's terminal |
| Bogotá to Armenia | Bus, several operators | 6h20 to 7h20, the average | 22 | Fares across six named operators in a live search |
Each figure is the starting price the source showed on 26 September 2026, and fares move with season and demand. The flight leg is the lowest fare a route-comparison site showed on 26 September 2026; Avianca and LATAM price it themselves and their fares move with demand. Bogotá to Armenia ran USD 22 to USD 32, in a live two-day window. 6, 10
From Armenia or Pereira the last hop is short. El Edén airport sits at La Tebaida, about 13 km from Armenia at 1,220 m, and takes domestic flights from Bogotá and Medellín. 12 Pereira's Matecaña airport is 44 km from Salento, about 1 hour 15 minutes by car, or an hour and a half on two buses for roughly USD 5. 11

What does the Cocora Valley hike cost?
Cocora sits on private land, so there is no national park ticket for it. Los Nevados National Natural Park charges foreign adults COP 38,000 at its North Brisas sector and COP 27,000 at La Cueva, Potosí, Nevado de Santa Isabel and Otún Lagoon. Cocora appears on none of those lists. 13 What you pay instead is three farm gates, in cash, as you walk. 2
| Line | What it buys | COP | USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Willys jeep, Salento to Cocora and back | A shared seat, 25 to 30 minutes each way | 12,000 | 3.63 |
| Finca El Portón | The first gate on the loop | 10,000 | 3.02 |
| Finca La Esperanza, Bosque de Palmas | The palm forest itself | 30,000 | 9.07 |
| Acaime hummingbird sanctuary | Optional detour, hot drink included | 20,000 | 6.05 |
| Full loop with Acaime | Cash, per person | 72,000 | 21.77 |
Converted at COP 3,306.86 per USD, the rate certified for 26 September 2026. 3, 14 Skip Acaime and the day comes to about COP 52,000, close to USD 15.72. A second visitor guide puts the gates alone at a total of COP 30,000 to 50,000, below the COP 60,000 the itemized fees add up to with Acaime. Carry the higher amount. 2, 7
Table view: Where a Cocora day's cash goes
| Item | Value (COP) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Palm forest gate, La Esperanza | 30,000 COP | 42% |
| Acaime sanctuary | 20,000 COP | 28% |
| Willys jeep, return | 12,000 COP | 17% |
| Finca El Portón gate | 10,000 COP | 14% |
The palm forest gate is the biggest single line at COP 30,000. Acaime is the one you can drop, and dropping it takes the day to about COP 52,000. Source: 2
The hike itself: 12 to 15 km, six hours, one jeep back
The counter-clockwise loop is the one nearly everyone walks, and the valley's own guide recommends going that direction. It starts on the valley floor among grazing cattle and wax palms, climbs into cloud forest, and tops out at Finca La Montaña before dropping back down through the palm forest at the end of the day. The Acaime detour breaks off partway up, ahead of that descent. 7, 2
Buy the jeep ticket on Plaza de Bolívar
Tickets sell at the square in Salento, and the ride takes 25 to 30 minutes. Keep the return half of the ticket. It is your seat home. 7
Walk it counter-clockwise
The valley's visitor guide recommends this direction. It puts the climbing early and brings you down through the palm forest at the end of the day. 7
Decide on Acaime at the junction
The sanctuary costs COP 20,000 with a hot drink and adds about 4 km and 2 hours. Weigh it against the time left before the last jeep. 2
Pay each gate as you reach it
Three landowners collect three separate fees along the route, in cash, with no shared fare board between them. 2
| Source | Shared seat | Whole jeep | Departures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rutas De Montaña, a Salento mountain-guide blog | COP 3,500 one way | COP 25,000, up to 8 people | 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and about 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, hourly at weekends |
| Frugal Voyage, reported May 2026 | COP 5,000 to 7,000 one way, COP 12,000 return | not stated | not stated |
| cocoravalleycolombia.com visitor guide | not stated | not stated | From about 6:00 a.m., roughly hourly into the evening |
Neither page is an operator's own fare board, and no official one exists online. Treat the spread as a range and settle it at the square. The cost table above uses the higher COP 12,000 return figure. 8, 2
Most walkers do the loop on their own. Cocoratours, a Salento operator, sells the alternative: a private round-trip Willys plus guaranteed entry from COP 120,000 a person, 3 to 5 hours, with the walking still self-guided. 15 That is about COP 48,000 above the cash-and-shared-jeep day, and it buys transport and certainty. MMT weighs that trade in guided versus self-guided hiking costs.
Continuing from Cocora into Los Nevados proper needs a guide, and no operator publishes that fee online. Ask in Salento.
What does a coffee farm tour cost in Salento?
Two farms near Salento publish their own prices. The gap between the tours is mostly group size.
Finca El Ocaso runs its Traditional tour at COP 60,000 for 1 hour 30 minutes, up to 30 people, with no reservation needed. Its Premium tour costs COP 120,000 for 2 hours 45 minutes, caps the group at 10, takes ages 15 and over by advance booking, and ends with a cupping of four of the farm's own coffees. 4, 5
| Tour | Length | Group and booking | COP | USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finca El Ocaso, Tradicional | 1h30 | Up to 30, walk-ups welcome | 60,000 | 18.14 |
| Finca El Ocaso, Premium | 2h45 | Up to 10, ages 15+, book ahead | 120,000 | 36.29 |
| Finca Don Elías, through Cocoratours | 1h20 | Daily, Spanish or English | from 50,000 | 15.12 |
| Private Willys to Don Elías and back | Driver waits | Per booking, split it | 140,000 | 42.34 |
Converted at COP 3,306.86 per USD for 26 September 2026. 3 Under-12s pay a reduced price and under-6s go free on El Ocaso's Traditional tour. El Recuerdo, the other farm people ask about, publishes no price of its own, so it stays off this table. 4

Transport is the line that decides the morning. Finca Don Elías sits outside town and has no price page of its own, so Cocoratours is how you book it: from COP 50,000 a person for 1 hour 20 minutes. A private round-trip Willys with the driver waiting adds COP 140,000 to the booking. Split four ways that is COP 35,000 each, which lands the morning at about COP 85,000 a head, close to USD 25.70. 16, 3
- Turn up at El Ocaso and take the Traditional tour if your plans are loose: COP 60,000, 1 hour 30 minutes, groups to 30, no booking. 4
- Book Premium a day ahead if you want the cupping: COP 120,000, 2 hours 45 minutes, 10 people, 15 and over. 5
- Book Don Elías through Cocoratours for the shortest and cheapest option, from COP 50,000 for 1 hour 20 minutes, daily in Spanish or English. 16
- Share the jeep or walk to the farm gate. The private round trip is COP 140,000 for the whole booking, so a group of four pays a quarter of it each. 16
Two nights in Salento, priced
Two nights buys one hike day and one farm morning. Arrive in the afternoon, walk the loop the next day, take a tour before the bus out. The order matters, because the jeep and the farm both want the early hours.
- 01Salento, afternoon one1 night
Walk Calle 5 up to the viewpoint, eat, and buy the morning's jeep ticket on Plaza de Bolívar so the queue is behind you. 7
→ Taxi or bus in from Armenia or Pereira - 02
- 03A coffee farm, morning three0 nights
El Ocaso's Traditional tour runs 1 hour 30 minutes for COP 60,000 and takes walk-ups, which fits a midday bus out. 4
→ Jeep or taxi to the farm, then the terminal
With less time: With one night, take the first jeep and skip Acaime. The core loop still fits in 5 to 6 hours, and the farm tour is the thing to drop. 7
Gates and tours alone come to about COP 132,000 a person, close to USD 39.92 at the 26 September 2026 rate: the full Cocora day at COP 72,000 plus El Ocaso's Traditional tour at COP 60,000. Beds, meals and the ride into Quindío sit on top of that. 2, 4, 3
Cash, the peso and a rate that moved 8 percent
Colombia's reference rate is the TRM, and the Superintendencia Financiera certifies and publishes it every day. 14 For Saturday 26 September 2026 it stood at COP 3,306.86 per US dollar. Over the two weeks before that it climbed from about COP 3,072 to about COP 3,330, a move of roughly 8.4 percent. 3
That swing is why this page prints pesos first. A budget written in dollars three weeks out can drift by the price of a coffee tour before you land. MMT's exchange-rate worksheet tests what a 10 percent move does to a whole trip.
Colombia's own certification chain, not a US rate table, is the one to follow for pesos. 14, 3
Is Quindío on the do-not-travel list?
Quindío is absent from that list, and the absence is the answer. The US State Department advisory, reissued through the embassy in Bogotá on 31 March 2026, puts Colombia as a whole at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and natural disasters. 17
The Level 4, Do Not Travel areas are:
- Arauca
- Cauca, excluding Popayán
- Valle del Cauca, excluding Cali
- Norte de Santander
- The strip within 10 km of the Venezuelan border
Quindío, the department that holds Salento, Armenia and the Cocora Valley, appears on none of them. 17
Advisory levels change on their own schedule, and some insurance policies use them as a trigger. Open the current Colombia advisory and your policy wording on the day you book, then decide.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a ticket to enter the Cocora Valley?
There is no single ticket. The valley is crossed on private land, and three landowners collect separate cash fees on the loop: about COP 10,000, COP 30,000 and COP 20,000. A second visitor guide totals the same gates at COP 30,000 to 50,000, so treat COP 60,000 as the ceiling and carry cash for it. Cocora is absent from Los Nevados National Natural Park's own fee sectors, which is why no park price applies. 2, 7, 13
How long is the Cocora Valley hike?
The counter-clockwise full loop is about 12 to 15 km and takes 5 to 6 hours, climbing a cumulative 600 to 800 m from the valley floor near 2,400 m to Finca La Montaña at about 2,860 m. The Acaime sanctuary detour adds roughly 4 km and close to 2 hours. 7, 2
When is the Cocora Valley open, and when do the jeeps run?
The valley is open 08:00 to 18:00. Jeep timings are less settled: a Salento mountain-guide blog lists weekday departures at 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and about 3:30 p.m., while the valley's visitor guide describes jeeps from about 6:00 a.m. running roughly hourly into the evening. Confirm the last return at Plaza de Bolívar before you start walking. 7, 8
How do you get from Medellín to Salento in a day?
Either way fits in a day. The Medellín to Pereira flight takes 45 to 50 minutes from about USD 46, and the road in from Matecaña airport covers 44 km in about 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi, or about an hour and a half on two buses for roughly USD 5. The one direct bus, Flota Occidental, runs about 7 hours 30 minutes from about USD 24. 6, 11
Can you fly into Armenia instead of Pereira?
Yes. El Edén airport at La Tebaida, about 13 km from Armenia at 1,220 m, handles domestic flights from Bogotá and Medellín. Check current schedules and fares with Avianca or LATAM, which change by season. Bogotá to Armenia by bus ran USD 22 to USD 32 one way, in a live two-day window, and the trip itself took 6 hours 20 minutes to 7 hours 20 minutes on average, checked on 26 September 2026. 12, 10
Which Salento coffee farm tour is the best value?
Per hour, Finca Don Elías through Cocoratours is the cheapest at COP 50,000 for 1 hour 20 minutes, but it is outside town, so add transport. If you want to turn up without booking, El Ocaso's Traditional tour at COP 60,000 for 1 hour 30 minutes is the one, and its Premium at COP 120,000 buys the smaller group and the cupping. 4, 5, 16
How much cash should you carry for a day in Cocora?
About COP 72,000 a person covers the return jeep and all three gates including Acaime, close to USD 21.77 at the rate certified for 26 September 2026. Round up. Jeep fares are quoted differently by different sources, every gate takes cash, and the trail sells nothing on card. 2, 3, 8
Is it safe to travel to Salento?
By the reading that matters for insurance, yes: Level 3, Reconsider Travel, applies to Colombia as a whole, and Quindío is not named at any level, not Level 3 and not Level 4. Insurers that use the advisory as a trigger read the country-wide level, so a department going unnamed does not exempt you from it. Read the current advisory before you book. 17
