One Scottish trail priced both ways for 2027 and cross-checked with a second operator: the day-by-day stages, what each price leaves out, solo costs and cancellation tiers side by side, plus the places where a Nation's rules decide for you.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • On the same trail with the same operator, the guided trip costs £1,340 more and includes 7 lunches and 6 dinners; the self-guided price covers breakfast only. Wilderness Scotland lists its 2027 West Highland Way departures from £2,835 guided and £1,495 self-guided, or $547.60 against $252.67 per walking day at $1.3521 per pound. 1, 2, 3
  • The guided group walks the longer days: 14 to 30 km, against 10 to 24 km self-guided. The self-guided trip adds a night at Bridge of Orchy, splitting the guided group's 30 km day across Rannoch Moor in two. 1, 2
  • Walking solo with Wilderness Scotland, you book the guided trip. Its self-guided trips are sold to parties of 2 to 4; on the guided trip a solo walker shares a room at the standard price or pays £575 for a room alone. 2, 1
  • A Wilderness Scotland small-group deposit comes back in cash only in the first 48 hours. After that, 76 or more days out, it becomes a credit for future travel; Macs Adventure refunds all but its 20% deposit until 42 days out. 4, 5
  • At Antelope Canyon, the Navajo Nation requires a guide, and the tour costs extra on top of the Nation's $15 entry fee per person, per location, per day. At Havasupai, the Havasupai Tribe's 2026 campground permit is $455 per person for 3 nights, with every permit, fee and tax included. 6, 7

Prices are as each operator or Nation listed them on 13 September 2026, per person unless a table says otherwise. Flights, insurance, gear and the meals a trip leaves out come on top of every figure.

What counts as guided, self-guided and supported self-guided?

Picture two parties starting the West Highland Way on the same morning. One meets its guide at 8.15am under the departure board at Glasgow Queen Street station, with the train to Milngavie in the price. The other buys tickets from the station machine, about £5 each, and follows route notes with a map. Wilderness Scotland sells both trips for 2027, so its two prices show what the guided version adds. 1, 2

  • Independent: you book every bed, arrange your own bag and find your own way. All the planning is yours, and so is the money it saves.
  • Supported self-guided: an operator books the rooms, moves your bag and supplies route notes, and your party leads itself on the trail. 8, 2
  • Guided: a leader walks with the group. On Wilderness Scotland's West Highland Way the guide is there throughout, and almost every meal comes with the price. 1

Each step down that list hands more work to someone else: first the bookings and the bags, then the route finding and the decisions on the trail. Here is what the guide adds to the bill on one Scottish trail, and where a Nation's own rules make the choice for you.

How much more does the guided West Highland Way cost?

On 13 September 2026, Wilderness Scotland listed its guided West Highland Way from £2,835 per person and its self-guided version from £1,495. Both walk the whole trail, 154 km from Milngavie to Fort William, and both carry the operator's blue grade, for fit and experienced hikers. The guided trip takes 7 walking days and 7 nights. The self-guided trip takes 8 walking days and 9 nights, the first in Glasgow. 1, 2

Per-walking-day figures divide each from price by its walking days, and the bottom row subtracts the figures above it. Dollars use $1.3521 per pound, the Federal Reserve's rate for 4 September 2026, from its release of 8 September. Both from prices are for 2027 departures, which run £1,495 to £2,195 self-guided and £2,835 to £2,895 guided.

The two extra self-guided nights are a first night in Glasgow and a stop at Bridge of Orchy. That stop splits the guided group's longest day, 30 km from Tyndrum across Rannoch Moor to Glencoe, into days of 10 and 20 km. Across the walk, self-guided days run 10 to 24 km and guided days 14 to 30 km; the section on going self-guided lists them day by day. 2, 1

Wilderness Scotland's guided day costs more than twice a self-guided day at either operator. Its guided price includes 7 lunches and 6 dinners and its self-guided price covers breakfast only; Macs Adventure's bars compare price and hiking days, not nights, meals or trains. Inputs: Wilderness Scotland £2,835 for 7 walking days and £1,495 for 8, at $1.3521 per pound; Macs Adventure $1,715 for 7 hiking days, $1,940 for 8 and $2,425 for 10. Macs Adventure's 9-day and 11-day trips both come to exactly $242.50 a day, rounded up to $243. Source: 1, 2, 9, 3

A second operator prices its self-guided days close to Wilderness Scotland's. Macs Adventure sells the trail self-guided, priced in dollars: from $1,715 for 8 days with 7 of hiking, $1,940 for 9 days with 8, and $2,425 for 11 days with 10, its most moderate version with the shortest hiking days. The gentler pace adds $485 to the 9-day price, and the rate per hiking day holds at $242.50. 9

What services does a self-guided package handle?

Wilderness Scotland's self-guided price covers the beds, the bags and the route notes. That is 9 nights of bed and breakfast for two sharing, the first in Glasgow, plus a luggage transfer for one bag each up to 20 kg. The route notes include a map and full directions to your accommodation. Lunches, dinners and the train to Milngavie are yours to buy. 2

Inclusions as each trip page listed them on 13 September 2026. The guided group meets at Glasgow Queen Street station at 8.15am on Day 1, so a Glasgow bed the night before sits outside its 7 nights. Both itineraries transfer walkers from Rowardennan to their hotel for the night, and both finish in Fort William.

Luggage transfer changes what you carry, within limits. On Macs Adventure trips, the bag reaches you only at the day's destination, so the daypack holds everything until then. Some high-alpine routes run without transfers because the huts are remote or have no vehicle access, and those call for a larger overnight pack. 10

If your walk runs hut to hut, check the beds and meals with hut-to-hut hiking costs before you compare packages.

What should an accompanying leader actually do?

On Wilderness Scotland's guided West Highland Way, the guide is with the group throughout. The group generally eats dinner together. On the one evening the guide takes off, they recommend places to eat and help with reservations. What that person is trained to do is the part worth asking about. 1

Mountain Training's Mountain Leader award, regulated by Ofqual in England, shows what the job covers. Training takes 6 days, including a 2-day expedition with an overnight camp. Assessment takes 5 days, with a 3-day expedition and 2 overnight camps. Candidates take 3.3 years on average to go from training to a pass. 11 The syllabus covers four areas:

  • Leadership and decision making
  • Planning and weather
  • Hazards and emergency procedures
  • Navigation

In the United States, the American Mountain Guide Association certifies guides in three technical disciplines: Alpine, Rock and Ski. 12 The American Hiking Guides Association certifies hiking and backpacking guides through three pathways, Hiking Guide, Backpacking Guide and Mountain Leader, with standards aligned to the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations. 13

Group and private guiding: what changes about the bill?

On the guided trip, a solo walker who shares a room pays the standard price. Wilderness Scotland pairs solo travelers with another guest of the same sex. A double room to yourself costs £575 extra, or $777.46 at $1.3521 per pound, and those rooms are limited, first come, first served. 1, 3

Wilderness Scotland sells its self-guided trips to parties of 2 to 4 and points solo travelers to its small-group trips.

Private guiding changes who shares the bill. Wilderness Scotland also runs the guided trip privately for one party, priced by the number of travelers, with days tailored to the group and made more or less challenging to suit its experience. Divide the written quote by the people who will travel, and read the private cancellation terms below, which charge 25% of the holiday price even 76 or more days out. 1, 4

Can you do this hike self-guided?

Start with the least experienced walker in your party. Wilderness Scotland grades both West Highland Way trips blue, for fit and experienced hikers, and expects self-guided walkers to follow a hiking map with at least basic navigation skills. If that walker has recently done several days in a row of up to 24 km, carrying a daypack with the day's needs, the self-guided trip fits. 2, 1

Distances and ascents as each itinerary listed them on 13 September 2026; both trip pages give the trail as 154 km. The self-guided walking days follow a first night in Glasgow.

Plan for gaps in signal. The National Park Service's Hike Smart guidance, updated 13 June 2024, warns hikers against relying on a cell phone because coverage and reception may be missing, and asks them to leave a trip plan with someone. On a self-guided trip, the plan and a map go in the pack. 14

  1. Match the longest day

Set each itinerary's longest day beside the longest days your party has walked recently, several in a row on similar ground. On this trail that is 24 km self-guided and 30 km guided. Wilderness Scotland suggests training with long walks on consecutive days. 2, 1

  2. Price what you carry

A self-guided day puts water, food, layers and a map on your back. The beginner hiking gear budget prices the kit you still need.

  3. Pick the fallback now

If the stages outrun the party, choose a longer itinerary with shorter days, such as Macs Adventure's 11-day version, or a season of shorter walks first. Wilderness Scotland's group guided trip walks longer days than its self-guided one; its private version adjusts the challenge to your group's experience. 9, 1

When the Navajo Nation or the Havasupai Tribe sets the rules

Some places answer the guided question for you, because the Nation that governs the land sets the terms. Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation makes tour guides mandatory at all Antelope Canyon locations and charges the Nation's own entry fee of $15 per person, per location, per day. Guided tours cost extra, booked with one of the operators the Nation lists. 6

The Nation also sets the terms for hiking in its Tribal Parks, including the Tseyi Dine’ Heritage Area at Canyon de Chelly. To hike or camp in one, the Navajo Nation requires a Backcountry Permit, which covers staying overnight and hiking the location with a guide, with the entry fee charged on top. 15 At Canyon de Chelly, the Nation's tour page states that the park's areas are by guided tour only, booked by calling an operator from its list. 16

The Havasupai Tribe, a sovereign and federally recognized Tribe, sells its permits on its own booking site and sets the terms. The Tribe's plan for the first day has visitors hike in, and its pack mules can carry the bags. 7

  1. Check in

At the tourist office at Grand Canyon Caverns & Inn, collect your wristband and complete the Tribe's forms, unless you checked in the day before. 7

  2. Drive to Hualapai Hilltop

The trailhead sits at 5,200 feet. Drop any pack mule bags there between 4am and 9am. 7

  3. Hike 8 miles to Supai Village

The trail drops to 3,205 feet at the village, where the lodge is. 7

  4. Continue to the campground

It lies farther on. Mule bags typically reach the bottom of the canyon between 2pm and 5pm. 7

For 2026, both permit types include all necessary permits, fees and taxes, and every booking is paid in full when made. Four people sharing a lodge room pay $569.25 each for 3 nights, against $455 each at the campground. 7

Permits include all necessary permits, fees and taxes. The Tribe reimburses the campground permit fee, after the visit, for enrolled Native American visitors who show enrollment documents at check-in.

Permit systems elsewhere set their own rules too. How to verify trekking permit fees walks through checking them at the source.

Cancellation terms and changes: what reverses the saving?

A saving on price can vanish in a cancellation, and the two operators draw their lines on different days. Wilderness Scotland takes a 25% deposit, with the balance due 10 weeks before departure. Macs Adventure takes 20%, with the balance and signed risk-release forms due 6 weeks out. 17, 5

Missing Macs Adventure's balance and forms deadline cancels the trip, and the deposit is kept. Wilderness Scotland's deposit can exceed 25% on some custom or private holidays, and it says so before booking.

Changes cost money too. Macs Adventure charges a non-refundable $150 per person for each alteration after booking, and a fixed hotel or transport arrangement can carry up to a 100% charge on that part. 5

How do you price the fee against the work it saves?

Walking the whole trail guided costs £1,340 more per person, or $1,811.81. That money buys a guide throughout, 7 lunches and 6 dinners, the train to Milngavie and a group that walks together, in 7 longer days instead of 8. The self-guided price buys a Glasgow night, the logistics and your own pace. The question is which work you want to hand over. 1, 2, 3

  1. Put both trips on one basis

Compare the whole trail, or divide each price by its walking days, and use the same room basis for both. The self-guided price assumes two sharing. 2

  2. Add what each price leaves out

On the self-guided side, price 8 trail lunches, 9 dinners and the train to Milngavie, about £5. On the guided side, add dinner on Day 4 and a Glasgow bed if you arrive the night before the 8.15am start. The multi-day hiking food budget shows how to cost the meals. 2, 1

  3. Name the work the guide takes on

Finding the route and making the call on a bad-weather day. Both packages already book the beds and move the bags, so leave those out, along with anything you enjoy. Write down the hours the rest would take you on a typical day.

  4. Divide the difference by those hours

Divide the per-walking-day gap left after step 2 by those daily hours. The result is what an hour of saved work costs. Weigh it against what a holiday hour is worth to you; the national park pass break-even uses the same method.

  5. Check the date you are most likely to cancel

Read the tier for that date in each contract before the deposit leaves your account.

  • Choose the guided trip when you want a guide to find the route and make the calls, with meals and company handled, or when you travel solo and a shared room suits you. Expect longer days on this trail, up to 30 km. 1
  • Choose supported self-guided when your party of 2 to 4 already walks days of up to 24 km, wants its own pace and rooms, and will buy its own lunches and dinners. 2
  • Book everything yourself when the planning is part of the fun, and start with a budget for a hiking trip.
  • Book a guide for Antelope Canyon, where the Navajo Nation makes guides mandatory, and buy the Nation's Backcountry Permit before you hike or camp in one of its Tribal Parks. 6, 15

Frequently asked questions

Does self-guided mean I walk alone?

You walk with your own party. Macs Adventure's self-guided trips come without tour groups or guides. Wilderness Scotland sells its self-guided West Highland Way to parties of 2 to 4, who keep their rooms to themselves, and points solo travelers to its small-group trips. 8, 2

Can I pick my own dates for a self-guided trip?

On Wilderness Scotland's West Highland Way, yes. Custom dates add a £100 per person supplement, and the first night is sometimes in Milngavie instead of Glasgow. 2

Can I hand my booking to someone else?

With Macs Adventure, yes, with at least 14 days' notice. Transferring the booking to a replacement traveler costs $150 per person, the same as its fee for any other change. 5

How do I get home from Fort William?

Both Wilderness Scotland trips finish in Fort William, where most walkers take the West Highland Railway back to Glasgow; it runs several departures a day. Neither trip page lists that ticket among its inclusions, so add it to either budget. 1, 2

Can I fly into Havasupai instead of hiking?

Plan to hike. The Havasupai Tribe sells tourists helicopter seats on the day of travel only, first come, first served. A seat costs $300 per person one way, taxes and fees included, paid by cash or card at the Hualapai Hilltop or Supai Village landing zone. Others fly before tourists, and the Tribe tells visitors not to rely on the helicopter to get in or out. 7

Can I change my dates on a Wilderness Scotland group trip?

Only until 75 days before departure, when you can still ask to move the booking and its deposit to new dates. Inside 75 days, Wilderness Scotland treats a request to change the date as a cancellation, and its cancellation charges apply, starting at 40% of the holiday price. 4
