A beginner hiking gear budget: buy, borrow or rent?

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Prices for a first day-hike kit from the sellers' own sites on 13 September 2026, with a buy, borrow or rent answer for every item and the rental terms that change the bill.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • A first day-hike kit bought new costs $274.39 at regular prices, or $259.40 with Decathlon's boot on sale: nine lines from seven sellers on 13 September 2026, before sales tax and an emergency shelter, for a hiker who already owns water bottles, a warm layer, fire starters and repair tools. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
  • Borrow the daypack and headlamp, and the bill drops by $99.92, to $174.47 at regular prices or $159.48 with Decathlon's boot on sale. The two loans take more than a third off the kit. 4, 3, 1
  • Buy what touches your feet, and decide on fit with the tags attached. Decathlon takes back unused items bought on its site within 30 days, tags attached and in the original packaging, so try new boots on at home in hiking socks before they touch a trail. 9
  • Rent the big pack when the first overnight trip comes. Outdoors Geek rents Osprey's Atmos AG 65 overnight pack from $39.00, with no deposit on a single pack; for a first day hike, buy or borrow instead. 10, 11
  • Leave the carbon upgrade for later. Black Diamond's carbon poles cost $120.00 more than its $119.95 aluminum Trail poles and save 116 to 172 grams, or $0.70 to $1.03 per gram. 12, 13

This page prices gear for a first day hike in the United States, in US dollars before sales tax. Overnight, winter and technical trips need their own lists.

Choose the first walk before choosing the equipment

Picture the trail before the gear. A Saturday loop that fits between breakfast and a late lunch, on a path the whole group can walk, with the car waiting at the end. The National Park Service puts the test in plain words: "Pick a trail that everyone can successfully complete and enjoy safely." 14

Write five facts about the route at the top of the shopping list:

  • Hours on the trail
  • The surface underfoot
  • The climb
  • The forecast
  • Where the water comes from

A short summer loop and a long ridge in a cold wind call for different kits. Start from a friend's list if you have one, and keep what your route calls for.

Keep gear and trip costs in separate columns. Boots last for many hikes, while fuel, food and park entry get spent on the day. The guide to how to budget for a hiking trip prices the day itself, and national park passes works out when an annual pass pays for itself.

What gear functions do you already have?

Open the closet before you open a store's website. The National Park Service's Ten Essentials page, last updated 28 May 2026, organizes hiking gear into "ten categories, or systems." That framing helps a first budget: you are filling jobs, and the flashlight in the kitchen drawer can fill one. 15

  • Feet: boots or trail shoes that fit, and hiking socks to wear with them.
  • Carrying: a pack with room for water, food and a spare layer.
  • Light: a headlamp or flashlight with fresh batteries.
  • Finding the route: a paper map of the area and a compass you have practiced with.
  • First aid: a kit sized for the people in your group.
  • Fire: matches or a lighter, and fire starters. 15
  • Repairs: duct tape and a knife or multi-tool. 15
  • Sun: sunscreen that is still in date.
  • Emergency shelter: the Park Service lists "A tent, tarp, bivy sack, or emergency space blanket" as lightweight options. 15
  • Water and warmth: bottles that seal, and a warm layer for the top of the climb.

Mark every gap as buy, borrow or rent. A headlamp with a broken switch goes on the list. So does a pack whose straps have given out. The priced kit below covers most of these jobs, and the answers under its chart cover the rest: water, warmth, fire, repairs and shelter.

Where should you spend first? Footwear and fit

Spend first on what touches your feet. Two first pairs show how wide the range runs on 13 September 2026:

A dash means the page showed a single price; Merrell's page showed no promotion running. Sale prices can end at any time.

At the sale price, the gap is $110.00. 16, 1 Let fit decide. Try both on with the socks you plan to hike in, and buy the pair that fits at whichever price it carries. The kit below prices Darn Tough's men's Hiker Micro Crew Midweight Cushion sock at $26.00 a pair. 2

Nine lines from seven sellers come to $274.39 at regular prices. That is the new-gear bill for a first day hike on 13 September 2026, for a hiker whose closet already holds water bottles, a warm layer, fire starters and repair tools. With Decathlon's boot at its sale price, the kit costs $259.40. Sales tax, most shipping and an emergency shelter come on top. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Prices as each seller's page showed them on 13 September 2026, before sales tax. Boot and sock prices are for the men's models; price the version you wear before you total your kit. A dash means the page showed a single price; "same" means it showed identical regular and sale prices. Adventure Medical Kits labels $31.99 a sale price with no regular price beside it, so both totals use $31.99. The sale total takes the lower price wherever one appeared. Left out of both totals: emergency shelter, water bottles, clothing layers, fire starters, repair tools, food, transport, and shipping beyond the USGS handling charge.

Everything else stays outside the total, with its own answer:

  • Water bottles and a warm layer: use yours. Every total assumes both are already at home; replace a bottle that leaks and add its price.
  • Fire and repairs: use what you have, and buy what is missing. The Park Service lists matches or a lighter and fire starters for fire, and duct tape, a knife or a multi-tool for repairs. 15
  • Emergency shelter: buy. The Park Service's options run from a tent to an emergency space blanket, so price the one your route calls for and add it to your total. 15
  • Trekking poles: borrow. A new pair of Black Diamond Trail poles costs $119.95. 12
  • Overnight pack: rent, when the first overnight trip comes. Outdoors Geek's Osprey Atmos AG 65 rental starts at $39.00. 10

How do you borrow gear safely and test it?

Borrow the gear you are still deciding about. In this kit, a borrowed headlamp and daypack keep $99.92 in your pocket, and a friend's trekking poles save another $119.95. They are also the pieces worth trying before you own them. 4, 3, 12

Borrowed gear needs the check the National Park Service asks of all gear: "Check your equipment to ensure that it is in good working condition and learn how to use it before you set out." Someone else chose it, packed it and used it last, so the check matters more. 14

  1. Ask for the exact item, with dates

Name the pack, light or poles and the days you need them. Pick them up early enough for a test walk around the neighborhood.

  2. Fit and test it at home

Load the pack with what you will carry and adjust every strap. Click the headlamp through all its settings. Set the poles to your height; Black Diamond's Trail poles adjust from 100 to 140 centimeters. 12

  3. Agree on the what-ifs

Settle who pays if something breaks, goes missing or comes back late, and agree on it before the pickup.

  4. Return it the way it came

Dry it, clean it and hand it back on the agreed day. Add any fuel or fares for pickup and return to the trip budget.

If a guided first hike appeals, ask which gear the fee includes before you shop, then compare the whole day in guided vs self-guided hiking costs.

Reading a rental quote: deposits, duration and damage terms

Read the rental policies along with the price. How days are counted, the deposit, late fees, damage and cancellation all change the bill. Outdoors Geek, a national rental company that ships gear to you, publishes each of those terms, which makes its pages a useful model for reading any quote. 17, 11

Calculate break-even: when does buying make sense?

Buy once the rentals already on your calendar cost more than owning. Divide the purchase price by the price of one rental, and the answer is the trip where buying catches up. At Outdoors Geek's $39.00 starting price, three rentals cost $117.00 and five cost $195.00. Set your own purchase quote beside those running totals. 10

  1. Price the rental for your dates

Choose the tier and size you need, and count days the renter's way. At Outdoors Geek, a Friday start and a Sunday return make a three-day rental. 17

  2. Price the same model to buy

Use the maker's own page, then add tax and shipping. Compare like with like: a 20 liter daypack and an Atmos AG 65 overnight pack do different jobs. 3, 10

  3. Divide, then count dated trips

The purchase price divided by one rental gives the break-even trip. Count the trips that have dates, and leave the hoped-for ones out.

  4. Add the costs of owning

Cleaning, repairs and storage space sit on the owning side. Resale value joins them once you hold an offer.

Used gear lowers the price you divide

Used gear lowers the purchase price, so read the return terms before you pay. Patagonia's Worn Wear resale shop tells buyers "you may return it at any time," and returns received more than 180 days after purchase "may be refunded with a Worn Wear merchandise credit." Returns start online, and a prepaid return label takes $7 off the refund. 18

If the next trip is overnight, the rent-or-buy list changes with where you sleep. A tent night adds the big pack and the shelter. Camping vs huts sets both overnight budgets side by side, and hut-to-hut hiking costs covers beds, meals and booking terms.

Why do weight savings matter less than fit and safety?

Grams are the last thing a first kit should buy. Black Diamond's aluminum Trail poles cost $119.95 a pair and weigh 480 grams. Its folding Distance Carbon FLZ poles cost $239.95 and weigh 308, 336 or 364 grams a pair, depending on the length you order. 12, 13

Middle length option336144120.000.83
Heaviest length option364116120.001.03

Extra cost is $239.95 minus $119.95. Cost per gram is the extra cost divided by the grams saved, rounded to the cent. Both pole pages showed identical regular and sale prices.

The same $120.00 buys Decathlon's boot on sale, the Darn Tough socks, the Suunto compass and a USGS map with handling, with $11.50 left over. 1, 2, 5, 6

Keep every job on the list: a lighter pack that leaves the first aid kit behind is a worse pack. Trim duplicates before chasing grams. Once the kit fits and you know what you carry, lighter hiking gear: cost per weight savings runs the cost-per-gram math on each upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to start hiking?

Plan on $159.48 of new gear with Decathlon's boot at its $35.00 sale price, or $174.47 at its $49.99 regular price, if you borrow a daypack and a headlamp. Both use seller prices on 13 September 2026 before tax and leave out an emergency shelter and the water bottles, warm layer, fire starters and repair tools the kit assumes you own. Spread across five day hikes, $159.48 comes to $31.90 a hike; across ten, $15.95. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8

Should footwear always be my largest purchase?

Spend on fit first and let the price follow. In the kit on this page, Black Diamond's $59.95 headlamp is the most expensive line, ahead of Decathlon's boot at $49.99 regular or $35.00 on sale. Borrow the headlamp and the daypack, and the boots lead the list again. 4, 1

Can two people share all emergency equipment?

Share by the maker's sizing. Adventure Medical Kits sizes its Ultralight/Watertight .5 kit, $31.99 on 13 September 2026, for a pair of adventurers heading out for one to two days, so two hikers can carry one on a day hike. Give each person a light and a way to follow the route in case the group splits up. 7

Is a sale price always the better buy?

Check the return terms first. Decathlon excludes clearance and final-sale items from returns, along with safety equipment such as helmets, life jackets and climbing gear, undergarments, gift cards and premium bikes. Before you buy a marked-down boot, confirm on its page that it can come back, so the fit test at home still counts. 9

Is used equipment automatically good value?

Used gear is good value when it fits and works once you count repairs. Inspect straps, zippers and seams before paying. Patagonia's Worn Wear FAQ notes that "Damage due to wear and tear will be repaired at a reasonable charge," so add any repair cost to your break-even. 18

What belongs outside the gear subtotal?

Food, transport, park entry, sales tax and shipping, plus the gear every total leaves out: emergency shelter, water bottles, a warm layer, fire starters and repair tools. Shipping rules differ by seller: Darn Tough ships free on orders of $50 or more, and Black Diamond on orders over $99. The USGS Store adds $7.50 handling to each order, so put every map you need in one order. 2, 4, 6
