The worked examples here are named routes in New Zealand, the United States and Canada, priced from each operator's or agency's own page. Flights or driving to the region sit outside every figure below.
Price the route from your door to your return
A linear walk sets two transport problems: the way in, and the way home from somewhere else.
The Milford Track runs one way only. Three nights, four days, 53.5 km, and a finish that sits a long way from any car. New Zealand's Department of Conservation sells the beds. A transport company sells the ride in and the ride out. Both get booked months before the first step. 11, 12
That is the shape of a hiking budget. The trail itself is free to walk, and the two ends of it are where the money goes. Fiordland Outdoors, a Te Anau operator, sells both journeys as one package, priced by where your day starts: NZD 145 per adult from Te Anau Downs, NZD 357 from Queenstown with a road leg and a flight inside it. 2
| Route and operator | What the fare covers | Price, NZD |
|---|---|---|
| Milford Track, Fiordland Outdoors, from Te Anau Downs | Boat with connecting road transport, summer | 145 per adult |
| Milford Track, Fiordland Outdoors, from Te Anau | Car, boat and bus, summer | 256 per adult |
| Milford Track, Fiordland Outdoors, from Queenstown | Car, boat, bus and plane, summer | 357 per adult |
| Milford Track, Fiordland Outdoors, winter package | Car, boat and bus, May to October | 170 per adult |
| Routeburn Track, Tracknet shared bus | A scheduled seat routed via Te Anau or Queenstown | 169 per adult |
Fiordland Outdoors publishes these as from prices, for a Great Walks season it sells as 1 November to 28 April, with a separate winter package from May to October. At the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for 11 September 2026, NZD 1 buys USD 0.5817, so the Te Anau Downs package is USD 84.35. 2, 3
Operators change what they sell, which is why a fare gets confirmed with the company running it this season. RealNZ's own Milford Track guide now sends readers to Tracknet for transport instead of selling it. MMT's linear hike transport costs page works through the return leg in detail. 12
How much does a hiking trip actually cost?
Six named routes, one adult each, priced from the operator's or the agency's own page.
The six routes below are priced one adult at a time, from the page that sells each one. At the bottom is a day's entry at Zion on foot. At the top is one person on a guided Fiordland walk with lodges, meals, a jet boat and a helicopter inside the price. Between them sits 196 times the money. 4, 5, 3
| Route and operator | Published price | Per adult, USD | What the price covers | Outside the price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hollyford Wilderness Experience, solo, Ngāi Tahu Tourism | NZD 6,745 | 3,923.57 | Three days and two nights guided, coach from Queenstown or Te Anau, a hotel night with dinner and breakfast, every trail meal, jet boat, helicopter, ensuite room, single supplement | Flights to New Zealand, insurance |
| Hollyford Wilderness Experience, sharing, Ngāi Tahu Tourism | NZD 4,395 | 2,556.57 | The same off-peak package with two people in the room | Flights to New Zealand, insurance |
| Havasupai campground, three nights, Havasupai Tribe | USD 455 | 455.00 | A three-night camping permit, with all permits, fees and taxes inside it | Travel to Hualapai Hilltop, food, mule or helicopter |
| Milford Track self-guided, DOC huts and Fiordland Outdoors transport | NZD 601 | 349.60 | Three hut nights at the summer international rate with GST, plus the Te Anau Downs transport package | Food, gear, any night in Te Anau or Queenstown |
| West Coast Trail, Parks Canada | CAD 276 | 199.08 | Backcountry use permit, orientation fee, both ferry crossings, the online reservation fee | Trailhead access, transport and food, in Parks Canada's own words |
| Zion National Park, one adult walking in | USD 20 | 20.00 | Entry for one person, valid 1 to 7 days | Everything else |
Converted at the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for 11 September 2026: NZD 1 buys USD 0.5817, and USD 1 buys CAD 1.3864. New Zealand hut fees include GST and the Havasupai permit includes taxes; the other rows are before any tax charged on the ground. Each row buys a different list, which the last two columns set out. 3, 1, 10
Table view: One adult's booked cost on six named routes, USD
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Hollyford guided, solo | $3,923.57 |
| Hollyford guided, sharing | $2,556.57 |
| Havasupai campground, 3 nights | $455 |
| Milford Track, huts and transport | $349.60 |
| West Coast Trail, Parks Canada fees | $199.08 |
| Zion, entry on foot | $20 |
The bars measure different lists. The Hollyford figure carries guiding, lodging, meals and transfers; Zion's USD 20 buys entry alone. Read each bar beside what it buys in the table above, then choose how much of the list you want to organize yourself. Source: 5, 10, 1, 2, 16, 4, 3
The most expensive row belongs to Ngāi Tahu Tourism, the commercial arm of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, the South Island iwi, which names itself the original inhabitants of this part of New Zealand. Its Hollyford Wilderness Experience puts the coach, the hotel night, the meals, the jet boat, the helicopter and the guiding into one published number. 17, 5
Pick the row whose list matches the work you want to do. A guided package hands over transport, beds and meals for one payment under one cancellation policy. The self-guided version of a Great Walk is a seventh of that price, NZD 601 against NZD 4,395, and hands back the shopping, the cooking and two transport bookings. A permit-only route leaves every other line to you, starting with the drive. 1, 2, 5
Build your day-by-day itinerary before the budget
The nights are what you pay for, and one booking decides whether the route happens at all.
Count nights, not days. The Milford Track is four days of walking and three nights of paid beds. DOC's stages run 5 km, 17.5 km, 13 km and 18 km, which comes to 53.5 km in one direction, and the huts at Clinton, Mintaro and Dumpling fix where each night happens. One row per calendar day catches the arrival and departure nights a trail brochure leaves out. 11, 12
- 01Clinton Hut1 night
The shortest stage of the walk at 5 km, on the day the boat runs. 11
→ Boat from Te Anau Downs, inside the Fiordland Outdoors package. - 02
- 03Dumpling Hut1 night
13 km, and the last bed the Department of Conservation sells on the track. 11
→ On foot. - 04The far end of the track0 nights
18 km, the longest stage of the four, and the day the ride home has to exist. 11
→ Covered by the same Fiordland Outdoors package.
With less time: There is no shorter version of this one. DOC books the track in a single direction over three nights, and huts are the only beds it sells along the way.
| Line | Quantity | Unit price, NZD | Total, NZD | Total, USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hut nights, Great Walks summer rate, international visitor | 3 nights x 2 adults | 152.00 | 912.00 | 530.51 |
| Transport package from Te Anau Downs | 2 adults | 145.00 | 290.00 | 168.69 |
| Booked cost for the party | 3 nights, 4 days | 1,202.00 | 699.20 |
DOC's hut fees include GST. At the New Zealand resident rate of NZD 106 a night the same trip is NZD 926, a gap of NZD 46 per person per night. Per walker the summer international total is NZD 601, or NZD 150.25 for each of the four days. Food, gear and any night in Te Anau or Queenstown sit outside this table. Converted at NZD 1 to USD 0.5817, the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for 11 September 2026.
Every route has one connection like that. On the Milford it is the hut night. At Zion it is a reserved seat to a western trailhead, on a shuttle that carries 13 passengers and asks for three. Confirm that one, then buy the fares and flights that depend on it. 11, 15
Camping, huts, or hotels: which costs less complete?
Compare whole overnights, including what each choice makes you carry, book and cook.
The bed price is the smallest part of the answer. Camping trades a nightly charge for gear, fuel and weight on your back. A hut trades weight for a fixed reservation somebody else controls. A base with day walks trades both for a drive to the trailhead each morning. Price the complete version of each, and the order changes.
A camping permit can sit a long way from free. The Havasupai Tribe, which sets its own prices, rules and refunds on its own land, charges USD 455 per person for three nights in the campground, with all permits, fees and taxes inside that figure. Two adults pay USD 910, which is USD 303.33 a night for the pair. 10
| Booking | Published price, USD | Per person for three nights, USD | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campground permit | 455 per person | 455.00 | Three nights of camping, with all permits, fees and taxes |
| Lodge room, four people sharing | 2,277 per room | 569.25 | Three nights in one room for up to four people |
| Lodge room, two people sharing | 2,277 per room | 1,138.50 | The same room with two people in it |
| Pack mule | 400 round trip | 400.00 | Carrying gear in and back out |
| Helicopter, Hualapai Hilltop to Supai Village | 300 per person one way | 300.00 | One flight, bought at the landing zone on the day of travel |
At full occupancy the lodge costs USD 114.25 more per person than the campground for the same three nights. Enrolled Native American and American Indian visitors pay the campground permit in full at booking and are reimbursed afterwards, on showing enrollment or Certificate of Indian Blood documentation at check-in; the Tribe says the reimbursement can take several weeks, and it applies to campground permits. Travel to Hualapai Hilltop sits outside every row.
Same three nights, different amounts of carrying. Camping is USD 455 a head with everything on your back. The lodge at four sharing is USD 569.25 a head and a roof. A mule moves the load for USD 400 round trip, and the Tribe sells a one-way helicopter seat for USD 300 at the landing zone on the day. 10

New Zealand's Great Walks run the other way. Huts are the only beds DOC sells on the Milford Track, so a camper's saving has nowhere to land there. Outside the Great Walks season, beds on the track go first come, first served, and the gas cooking, the flush toilets and the resident ranger go with the season. 12, 11
The night before the trailhead counts too. At the West Coast Trail's northern end, the Pachena Bay Campground belongs to the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, a self-governing treaty Nation and one of five signatories to the Maa-nulth Final Agreement, the first modern-day treaty completed on Vancouver Island. A late arrival turns that campground into a budget line. MMT's camping vs huts costs page compares the whole overnight bill. 18
How much should you spend on gear?
What a day kit costs from three sellers, and what the first trip's tent and pad cost to rent.
Rent the tent and the pad for the first trip, and buy the boots. An MSR Hubba Hubba LT tent costs USD 549.95 new and a Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT pad costs USD 199.95, USD 749.90 together. Outdoors Geek rents the same tent and pad for USD 76.00 combined, for one to three days. 8, 9, 6, 7
Table view: A tent and a pad: buying against renting, USD
| Item | Rent, 1 to 3 days (USD) | Buy new (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| MSR Hubba Hubba LT tent | $56 | $549.95 |
| Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT pad | $20 | $199.95 |
Together the tent and pad cost USD 76.00 to rent for one to three days and USD 749.90 to buy new, a gap of USD 673.90. Source: 6, 7, 8, 9
Boots are the line where fit beats the sticker. Merrell prices its Moab 3 at USD 145.00, and the decision still gets made on the shop floor, walking, not on the price tag. 19
| Item | Product | Price, USD |
|---|---|---|
| Boots | Merrell Moab 3, men's | 145.00 |
| Socks | Darn Tough Hiker Micro Crew | 26.00 |
| First aid | Adventure Medical Kits Ultralight/Watertight .5 | 31.99 |
| Total, three items | 202.99 |
Each price is that seller's own published figure, before sales tax, read on 13 September 2026. A headlamp, a compass, sun protection, a pack, a rain layer, water treatment and food sit outside this list; the NPS Ten Essentials below sorts all of them into systems worth pricing from each maker's own page.
The NPS Ten Essentials page sorts gear into ten systems instead of a fixed shopping list, and Hike Smart asks walkers to check their equipment and learn how to use it before setting out. Both are ways to find the gap in a kit. The prices come from the sellers. MMT's beginner gear budget sets the buy, borrow and rent versions side by side. 22, 23
Food: plan costs by location
The cooking is a line of its own, and some prices have the meals in them already.
Price the cooking before the meals. Milford Track huts come with cooking facilities, and the food is yours to carry. Inside the Great Walks season the gas is on and a ranger is in residence. Outside it, the gas goes off, which turns a stove and fuel into a line in your budget. 12
A guided package moves that line onto somebody else's invoice. The Hollyford Wilderness Experience puts a hotel night with dinner and breakfast, plus every trail meal and snack, inside its NZD 4,395 off-peak rate. Where a price includes a meal, take that meal out of the food model instead of paying for it twice. 5
- Which nights include a meal, and which include only a kitchen. The Hollyford covers every trail meal; the Milford huts cover the stove and the pots. 5, 12
- Whether the gas is on. In New Zealand the Great Walks season decides it, so a shoulder-season booking carries its own stove. 12
- Where the last shop is, what it stocks and which days it opens. A packed-lunch plan needs a shop that is trading on the afternoon you arrive.
An MSR PocketRocket Deluxe stove costs USD 84.95 to buy, and it belongs in the food section of a budget, not the gear list, because it is what turns carried food into dinner. 24
Operators on the Milford Track publish prices for beds and fares, and leave the food line to the walker, so fill it from a supermarket receipt in the town you fly into. MMT's food costs on multi-day hikes works through resupply against carrying.
What about permits, passes and access fees?
Entry, reservation and overnight charges are separate purchases, and the break-even takes a minute.
A pass is an entry ticket, and a reservation is a different purchase. NPS prices its Resident Annual Pass at USD 80.00 for United States citizens and residents, and its Non-Resident Annual Pass at USD 250.00, which is 3.125 times as much for the same year of entry. Zion also sells its own park-only annual pass for USD 70.00, open to the same US citizens and residents but valid at Zion alone. 25, 4
| Purchase | Price, USD | Valid for | Against a USD 35.00 vehicle entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zion, private vehicle with its occupants | 35.00 | 1 to 7 days | The unit of comparison |
| Zion, motorcycle | 30.00 | 7 days | Priced per machine |
| Zion, one person on foot or bicycle | 20.00 | 1 to 7 days | Priced per person |
| Zion annual pass, valid at Zion only | 70.00 | One year | Level at two entries, ahead from the third |
| Resident Annual Pass, US citizens and residents | 80.00 | One year | Ahead from the third entry |
| Non-Resident Annual Pass | 250.00 | One year | Ahead from the eighth entry |
USD 80.00 divided by USD 35.00 is 2.29, so three entries at USD 105.00 clear the pass. USD 250.00 divided by USD 35.00 is 7.14, so seven entries at USD 245.00 fall short and eight at USD 280.00 clear it. Zion's fee page carried these figures on 6 June 2026 and the NPS pass table on 5 January 2026. Timed entry and campground reservations, where a park uses them, are separate purchases.
Check which category you qualify for before comparing anything, because the same year of entry costs USD 80.00 or USD 250.00 depending on where you live. MMT's national park pass break-even runs that arithmetic by category. 25
Outside the United States the fee stack has its own shape. Parks Canada's own figures for the West Coast Trail add to CAD 276.00 per person once the backcountry use permit, the orientation fee, both ferry crossings and the online reservation fee are in, which is USD 199.08. The fee page says in its own words that hikers should expect additional expenses for trailhead access logistics, transportation, food and other costs. 16, 3
A tribal permit answers to a different government again, with its own refund clock. Check the land manager for each night of a route, because one receipt answers for one authority. MMT's trekking permit costs and rules covers verifying a permit before you buy a flight. 10
Where do the savings come from?
Sharing, then the cancellation tier you agree to, then the smaller lines.
The biggest lever on this page is a second person. Ngāi Tahu Tourism prices the Hollyford Wilderness Experience at NZD 4,395 per adult off-peak sharing an ensuite room, and NZD 5,195 in the peak season it sets from 1 February to 31 March 2027. Walking alone adds a NZD 2,350 single supplement in either season, so a solo place is NZD 6,745 against NZD 4,395 for each half of a couple, a premium of 53.5%. 5
The second lever is the date you cancel. Every operator on this page publishes tiers, and each tier is a price. Read them before the deposit goes in, then write each deadline into your calendar in the operator's own local time.
| Booking | Full refund | Partial refund | Nothing returned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiordland Outdoors, Milford Track transport | Cancel or change more than 24 hours before departure | Unstated on the page | Unstated on the page |
| Zion Adventure Company, trailhead shuttle | More than 72 hours before departure | Unstated on the page | Inside 72 hours; weather stays the company's own call, and a day it judges unsafe with no reschedule is refunded in full |
| Havasupai Tribe, campground permit | None at any notice | 50% at 90 or more days before the start date | Inside 90 days, with no exceptions for weather, illness or other disruption |
| Parks Canada, West Coast Trail | Permit, orientation and ferry fees at 21 or more days out | At 20 days or fewer, the ferry fees alone | The reservation fee and the cancellation fee, at any notice |
| Swiss Alpine Club huts | Until 18:00 two days before the night booked | A confirmed MeteoSwiss severe-weather warning or a rise in the SLF avalanche hazard level, proved in writing by 18:00 the day before | After that, a warden's no-show fee up to the full value of the booking |
| Hollyford Wilderness Experience | None published at any notice | A NZD 200 per person fee at 90 or more days out, then 50% at 30 to 89 days | 100% within 30 days, and once the trip has started |
| Wilderness Scotland, small-group trip | Unstated in the tiers recorded here | 40% of the holiday price at 75 to 51 days, 50% at 50 to 31 days | 100% at 30 days or fewer |
The Wilderness Scotland tiers recorded here begin 75 days before travel. Havasupai charges in full at booking, so its 50% tier is the whole of its refund. Each policy is quoted in the operator's own tiers, because the tier you fall into is the price.
Insurance answers to the activity, at the altitude, in the policy's own words. World Nomads covers hiking to 19,685 feet, or 6,000 meters, on its Standard and Annual plans, to 21,325 feet, or 6,500 meters, on Explorer, and to 26,247 feet, or 8,000 meters, on Epic. Pricing comes by quote. 30
Evacuation there runs through the treating physician and the company's own 24-hour assistance team, and trip cancellation pays for a covered reason. 30
Price the way home before the way there
Take the fare from the company running the service this season. RealNZ's own guide now sends Milford Track transport to Tracknet, which is how quickly a transport listing ages. 12
Write every cancellation tier into the calendar
One line per booking, with the operator's own deadline and its own percentage. Tracknet allows one free change more than 24 hours ahead and charges NZD 10 after that; a passenger who misses a connection for reasons beyond their control, and says so before departure, can be offered the next available service, which could be the following day. 31
Match the policy to the route, then pay the deposit
Read the altitude ceiling and the activity wording first, because a Cancel For Any Reason add-on has to be bought within seven days of that first deposit. 30
Afterwards, set the amounts you paid beside the amounts you planned, and keep refunds in their own column. The figure worth carrying to the next route is the one that says what it costs to stop early, add a night, or come home a different way.
Frequently asked questions
What is the simplest hiking-trip budget formula?
Party total first, then split. Add travel to the region, every night away, both trailhead transfers, access fees, food and any rental; divide the shared lines by the number of walkers; add the personal lines on top. The Milford Track worksheet here does it in two lines and lands at NZD 1,202 for two adults, or NZD 601 each. Keep the reserve as its own number. 1, 2
Is camping always cheaper than staying in huts?
No. A Havasupai campground permit is USD 455 per person for three nights, while three nights in Milford Track huts at the summer international rate are NZD 456, or USD 265.26. The camping figure is a tribal permit with taxes inside it; the hut figure is a bed with a kitchen attached. Compare whole overnights, including what each makes you carry. 10, 1, 3
How do I budget for bad weather and route changes?
Price the change you would actually make, then read who decides. The Swiss Alpine Club cancels free until 18:00 two days ahead, and afterwards charges a no-show fee up to the full booking value, with an exception for a confirmed MeteoSwiss severe-weather warning or an SLF hazard rise proved in writing by 18:00 the day before. Zion Adventure Company keeps the weather call for itself and refunds in full when it stands a trip down. 27, 15
Should I count gear I already own in my budget?
Keep it in the inventory and out of the cash column. This trip's cash number holds what you pay now: a USD 76.00 tent-and-pad rental, a USD 145.00 pair of boots, a USD 31.99 first aid kit. A separate ownership view spreads what you bought earlier across the trips ahead. Counting one purchase in both views doubles it. 6, 7, 19, 21
Can I plan around the cheapest advertised park pass?
Buy the pass your category qualifies for. NPS sells the Resident Annual Pass at USD 80.00 to United States citizens and residents and the Non-Resident Annual Pass at USD 250.00, while Zion sells its own USD 70.00 annual pass to the same citizens and residents, valid at Zion alone. At Zion's USD 35.00 vehicle rate the USD 80.00 pass is ahead from the third entry, and the USD 250.00 pass from the eighth. 25, 4
How do you calculate per-person costs when splitting expenses?
Split the lines a group genuinely shares and leave the rest alone. A Havasupai lodge room costs USD 2,277 for three nights and holds up to four people: USD 569.25 each at full occupancy, or USD 1,138.50 each for two people in the same room. Watch for the step: the room's price does not fall just because fewer people are booked into it. 10
What is a realistic daily budget for a hiking trip?
Divide after the itinerary, never before. Two adults on the Milford Track pay NZD 601 each across four days, which is NZD 150.25 per walker per day for beds and transport, with food on top. The same arithmetic on a guided Hollyford walk, NZD 4,395 over three days, gives NZD 1,465 a day with meals, guiding, a jet boat and a helicopter inside it. 1, 2, 5
Where should I cut costs first on a hiking trip?
Start at the top of the sorted list, where one decision moves more than a week of small ones. On these routes, walking the Hollyford alone adds NZD 2,350, and a four-person Havasupai lodge room costs USD 114.25 more per person than the campground for the same three nights. Sharing a room and cutting one overnight move beat any snack budget. 5, 10
