What the Department of Conservation charges for a bunk and a tent site on New Zealand's Routeburn Track, and how many nights of camping it takes to pay off the gear.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • A Routeburn hut bunk costs NZD 132 a night and a campsite NZD 42, per person, per night, for an international adult from 1 November to 30 April. The gap is NZD 90, about USD 52.35, and it buys the bed alone. 1, 2
  • Two adults, two nights, international rate: NZD 528.00 in huts, NZD 370.85 camping with a rented kit, NZD 550.85 for one night of each. The mixed pattern costs the most, because the tent is hired for the trip and rides in the pack on the hut night. 1, 3, 4, 5, 2
  • A rented kit clears the nightly gap in 1.9 nights; the name-brand four takes 16.9. Renting a tent, mat and stove is USD 98.00 for one walker and USD 118.00 for two, because the tent and stove split and the mat does not. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 2, 1
  • Read the route and the hut system before you compare anything. Milford and Paparoa carry huts alone, and ordinary backcountry huts run NZD 15 to NZD 25 a night against NZD 132 for a Great Walk bunk. 10, 11, 12, 1
  • Cancellation terms expose different amounts of cash. The Havasupai Tribe refunds 50 percent at 90 days or more and none inside 90; Outdoors Geek refunds everything within 48 hours, keeps 10 percent up to two weeks out, and refunds nothing inside two weeks without Trip Insurance. 13, 14

This page prices the bed, the camping-specific gear and the contracts around both. Trail transport, food, insurance and flights belong in your wider trip budget. New Zealand dollar figures are the Department of Conservation's published fees including GST; US dollar conversions use the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for 11 September 2026, NZD 1 to USD 0.5817.

Two beds on the same trail

At Routeburn Falls Hut the bunks come with mattresses, the room has heating, and a DOC ranger lives on site through the season. Campers pitch tents at one of the track's two campsites, with toilets, sinks, a water supply, picnic tables and cooking shelters. 1

The Routeburn is one of New Zealand's Great Walks, an alpine crossing in Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks with three huts and two campsites strung along the same route. Most walkers take three days and two nights, staying at Routeburn Falls and Lake Mackenzie Huts, over DOC's four stages of 7.5 km, 2.3 km, 11.3 km and 12 km. 1

Both beds sit on the same 2026 price list. An international adult pays NZD 132 for the bunk and NZD 42 for the tent site, per person, per night, from 1 November to 30 April. The difference is NZD 90 a night, about USD 52.35. 1, 2

NZD 90 is where the question starts. Camping wins the night and pays a buy-in, because a tent, a sleeping mat, a ground sheet and a gas cooker cost money first. This page prices both sides and finds the night they cross. 1

Is camping always cheaper than mountain huts?

The nightly gap on the Routeburn, from the track's own 2026 fee table, per person, per night, GST included.

The bed is cheaper. The trip is a separate question. DOC prices Routeburn huts and campsites in the same three dated bands. An international adult faces NZD 132 against NZD 42 in summer, and from 1 July to 31 October every adult pays NZD 30 against NZD 10. Gear, stage lengths and cancellation terms decide the rest. 1

The summer bands carry the story: NZD 90 a night for an international adult and NZD 60 for a resident. From 1 May the two beds close to within NZD 25, and the gear on your back matters more than the bed you book. Source: 1

Both beds leave the same things out. A Routeburn hut has no showers and supplies no food, cooking utensils or bedding, so a sleeping bag and a pot ride in both packs. 1

A nightly rate is one line of a hike budget. MMT's how to budget for a hiking trip page sets the bed beside transport, food and the gear already in the cupboard.

Establish which overnight options exist on your route

Map the nights before you price them. For every stage, name the hut or the campsite you are allowed to use. Camping sits near huts or in designated areas on every Great Walk except Milford and Paparoa, across nearly 60 campsites that carry none of the huts' indoor facilities. 16

  • Milford Track. Three huts, booked well in advance in the Great Walks season, and camping barred along the route. 10
  • Paparoa Track. No campsites on the track, and no camping at the Smoke-ho car park where walkers stage the night before. 11
  • Routeburn Track. Three huts and two campsites, with separate facilities: campers use the campsite's toilets, sinks, water supply, picnic tables and cooking shelters. 1
  • The rest of DOC's campsite system. Basic campsites are free, Backcountry campsite prices vary site by site, and Serviced and Standard campsites publish per-person fees that change with the site and the season. 16

Identify the kind of hut you are buying

One government, five ways to pay. Which system your route sits on moves the budget more than the choice between a bunk and a tent.

Step off the Great Walks and the hut price collapses. A Standard backcountry hut ticket costs NZD 15 a night for an adult and a Serviced ticket NZD 25, on the same DOC fee system that charges NZD 132 for a Routeburn bunk in summer. The Great Walk bunk is 8.8 times the Standard ticket. 12, 1

The pass pays for itself in 10.7 nights of Standard huts or 6.4 nights of Serviced huts, and the Great Walk huts sit outside it. Infants stay free on all three systems. 17, 12, 1

A Great Walk hut is still a self-catered hut. The NZD 132 buys a bunk, heating and a ranger, and leaves the cooking to you. MMT's hut-to-hut hiking costs page covers the European systems where half board changes that arithmetic. 1

How do equipment costs differ between camping and huts?

DOC's four camping items, priced to buy and to rent from the sellers' own pages on 13 September 2026.

DOC answers that on its own Routeburn checklist, in four items: tent, sleeping mat, ground sheet, gas cooker. The rest of the list, sleeping bag and eating utensils included, goes in both packs. 1

Sleeping bag and eating utensils sit on DOC's shared checklist, so both walkers carry them and neither item belongs in the camping-against-huts gap.

Buying the name-brand version of those four items costs USD 884.80. The MSR Hubba Hubba LT tent is USD 549.95 of that, about NZD 945.42, or 10.5 nights of the NZD 90 gap on its own. 6, 7, 8, 9, 2, 1

The budget column covers two items of the four: Decathlon's US site listed no camping stove and no 2-person tent footprint on 13 September 2026, and its pop-up tent is built for car camping. The MSR, Therm-a-Rest and Quechua pages showed out of stock that day with the prices still listed. Rental figures are Outdoors Geek's 'from' prices for a 1 to 3 day booking. 18, 19, 6, 3

Each bar prices one walker's gear against one walker's nightly saving. A rented kit clears the gap on the second night of a summer walk. The Decathlon pair is a car-camping pop-up and a foam pad, two of DOC's four items, so its bar marks the floor of buying, not a full kit. The name-brand four take about 17 nights, more than eight two-night Routeburn crossings. Source: 3, 4, 5, 19, 20, 6, 7, 8, 9, 1, 2

The sleeping mat is the line that refuses to split. Two walkers sharing one tent and one stove pay USD 118.00 for a 1 to 3 day rental, against USD 98.00 for one walker, because each still needs a mat. A backpack stays out of the gap, since the hut walker carries one too; Outdoors Geek rents an Osprey Atmos AG 65 from USD 39.00 either way. 3, 4, 5, 21

Renting also erases a line a buyer carries: the Big Agnes rental ships with its footprint free, while the matching MSR footprint is a separate USD 49.95. MMT's beginner hiking gear budget prices the boots, pack and shell both walkers need either way. 3, 7

The kit has a weight as well as a price, and that weight is one reason a camping version of the same walk sometimes needs an extra night, which pulls an extra day of food and a later transfer behind it.

The rented Big Agnes tent carries a trail weight of 1 lb 14 oz with a 4 to 5 oz footprint, against 3 lb minimum for the MSR tent. A Jetboil Flash is 14 oz with its pot, a PocketRocket Deluxe 83 g, or 2.9 oz, and a Forclaz foam mat 7.4 oz. 3, 6, 5, 8, 20

Do meals reverse the comparison?

On the Routeburn, neither bed feeds you. The huts carry basic cooking facilities and no food. The campsites carry cooking shelters, picnic tables, sinks and a water supply. Both walkers pack the same meals, so food cancels out of the gap and the stove is what remains. 1

The stove and its gas are the meal costs camping adds. The stove is already in the kit prices above, and the rented Jetboil Flash boils half a litre of water in an average of 2 minutes 30 seconds. 5

Fuel is the item that breaks a shopping list. MSR keeps IsoPro canisters off its own online store under hazardous-materials shipping rules and sends buyers to a dealer. A second rule covers the flight: flammable fuel is forbidden in carry-on and checked luggage alike. Buy the canister near the trailhead in the size your stove takes, 110 g, 227 g or 450 g. 22

Food is the biggest line either version carries once the beds are booked. MMT's food on a multi-day hike page prices the resupply against the carry.

How do booking terms and cancellation rules expose cash?

On a Great Walk in season, the nightly rate is the whole fee. DOC requires a booking for Routeburn huts and campsites from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, backed by a penalty or a refusal of entry, and adds no separate reservation charge. 1

The separate fee lives elsewhere in the same system. A camper who arrives at a bookable DOC campsite without a booking pays a NZD 10 booking fee on top of the site's rate. The annual Campsite Pass, good for 365 nights across DOC's conservation campsites, costs NZD 295 for an adult and NZD 147.50 for a child. 23

The Campsite Pass also caps at 7 nights per 30-day period at any single campsite. 23

Every booking is a separate contract. A cancelled hut night leaves the gear rental running, and a postponed walk leaves the permit where it is. Count the cash that stays out of reach in each version, then hold a reserve. The lower ordinary total sometimes carries the larger exposure. 14, 13

The Havasupai Tribe charges USD 455 per person for three nights in its campground, with every permit, fee and tax inside that figure. That works out at USD 151.67 a night, about 6.2 times the Routeburn international campsite rate of USD 24.43. One number covers what DOC splits into a nightly rate and a booking fee. 13, 1, 2

The Havasupai Tribe is a federally recognized Indian Tribe with sovereign immunity, and the rules on its land are its own. Native American and American Indian visitors with a tribal enrollment card, including a certificate of Indian Blood (CIB), camp free. They book and pay as usual, show the documentation at check-in, and the Tribe reimburses the campground permit afterwards. 13

Of the five systems in the table above, the Havasupai Tribe's terms commit the most money the earliest. Bookings are paid in full at the time of booking, 50 percent comes back at 90 days or more before the start date, and no refund is made inside 90 days. A lodge room is USD 2,277 for three nights, USD 759 a night, and a pack mule is USD 400 round trip. 13

DOC prices October twice. The Routeburn's own fee table runs its NZD 30 hut band from 1 July to 31 October, while DOC's general Great Walks pricing page labels its summer column 'Oct-April' and carries NZD 132 there. The track's table is the specific one; ask DOC which rate your October night takes. 1, 15

When does a mixed camping and hut itinerary make sense?

On a two-night Routeburn, the mixed pattern costs the most. One hut night and one campsite night for two adults is NZD 348.00 of beds. Add the rented kit at NZD 202.85 and the trip reaches NZD 550.85, which is NZD 22.85 above two nights in huts and NZD 180.00 above two nights of camping. 1, 3, 4, 5, 2

The kit is hired for the trip and not for the night, so the tent rides in the pack on the hut night and its cost stays in the column. GST is inside the DOC fees; transport, food, insurance and the camper's gas canister sit outside every row. The rented set is USD 118.00 at NZD 1 to USD 0.5817, the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for 11 September 2026. 1, 3, 4, 5, 2

Buy the hut night for the stage, not the saving. It earns its NZD 22.85 when it puts a pass within reach or gives you a roof on the night the forecast turns. A walker who already owns the tent drops the kit column, and the mixed pattern falls between the other two. 1, 3, 4, 5

Book a mixed version as two bookings, since DOC requires one for huts and campsites alike in season. MMT's linear hike transport page budgets the return from the far end. 1

Build the complete comparison for your own two nights

Five steps from a track page to a decision, with the worked Routeburn numbers beside them.

Five steps turn a track page into a decision. Every figure below comes from DOC's own pages and Outdoors Geek's own price list, read on 13 September 2026. Swap in your own track, band and nights; MMT's hiking guides and adventure economics hub holds the rest of the series. 1, 3

  1. Find which beds your route offers

Open the track's page on DOC's site and read the overnight options. Camping sits near huts or in designated areas on every Great Walk except Milford and Paparoa, across nearly 60 Great Walk campsites. 16, 10, 11

  2. Read the band you fall in

Resident or international, adult or child, and the month you walk. An international adult pays NZD 132 a hut night and NZD 42 a campsite night from 1 November to 30 April. 1

  3. Match the stage lengths before you multiply

A camping version that needs an extra night needs an extra day of food and a later transfer too. Compare two itineraries you could each actually walk, then multiply: two adults for two nights at NZD 90 is NZD 360, about USD 209.41. 1, 2

  4. Price the kit you lack

Rent DOC's four items for USD 98.00 for one walker, or USD 118.00 for two sharing a tent and stove with a mat each. Buying runs from USD 175.00 for Decathlon's car-camping pop-up and a foam pad, two of the four items, to USD 884.80 for the name-brand four. 3, 4, 5, 19, 20, 6, 7, 8, 9

  5. Buy the fuel at the trailhead

Canister fuel travels by neither post nor plane, so add a canister to the first shop near the track and match the size to your stove. 22

The same two nights in huts cost NZD 528.00, at NZD 132.00 a night each, so camping saves NZD 157.15, about USD 91.41. DOC fees include GST. Trail transport, food, insurance, the sleeping bag both walkers carry and the camper's gas canister sit outside both totals. The rental set converts at NZD 1 to USD 0.5817, the H.10 rate for 11 September 2026. 1, 3, 4, 5, 2

Five cases settle it.

  • The route carries one bed. Milford's three huts are the only beds on that track, and Paparoa lists no campsites. Book the hut. 10, 11
  • The month is cold. A Routeburn bunk falls to NZD 35 from 1 May and NZD 30 from 1 July, within NZD 25 of the NZD 10 campsite rate. Choose the hut, and pack for an alpine walk. 1
  • The huts are backcountry huts. NZD 15 to NZD 25 a night by ticket, or NZD 160 a year for the pass. Choose the hut. 12, 17
  • The gear would be a one-trip purchase. The MSR and Therm-a-Rest four cost NZD 1,521.06, about 16.9 nights of the gap. Rent it, or book the hut. 6, 7, 8, 9, 2, 1
  • The route offers both beds in summer and you rent the kit. Camping takes the two-night trip for NZD 370.85 against NZD 528.00. Pitch the tent. 1, 3, 4, 5

Frequently asked questions

Does a hut booking include dinner?

Only where the product says so. Routeburn huts carry basic cooking facilities and supply no food and no cooking utensils, and DOC's own checklist puts eating utensils on the list both hut walkers and campers carry. Where a hut system does sell meals, write the bed and the food on separate lines. 1

Can I camp outside a hut when all the beds are full?

In season, only on a booked pitch. From 1 November to 30 April DOC requires a booking for Routeburn huts and campsites alike, with a penalty or a refusal of entry for walkers who arrive without one, so a full hut sends you to one of the track's two campsites or to another date. Camping is barred along the Milford Track, and the Paparoa Track lists no campsites at all. 1, 10, 11

Should I buy a tent to avoid expensive hut nights?

Count the nights first. The MSR Hubba Hubba LT alone is USD 549.95, about NZD 945.42, which is 10.5 nights of the NZD 90 gap, and the full four-item kit at USD 884.80 takes about 16.9 nights. Renting a 2-person tent, the Big Agnes Fly Creek HV UL2, costs USD 56.00 for 1 to 3 days with the footprint included. Buy for the trips you will repeat, rent for the one you have booked. 6, 2, 1, 3

How should a family compare camping and hut prices?

Price every walker in their own band. A Routeburn summer child rate is NZD 66 a hut night and NZD 21 a campsite night for international visitors, NZD 44 and NZD 14 for residents, and the child split holds all year at 5 to 17 for residents and 0 to 17 for international visitors. Passes follow the same split: NZD 80 for a child Backcountry Hut Pass, NZD 147.50 for a child Campsite Pass. Then add the gear that cannot be shared, one sleeping mat each at USD 20.00 to rent. 1, 15, 17, 23, 4

How much does equipment rental add to camping costs?

For DOC's four camping items on a 1 to 3 day booking, USD 98.00 for one walker and USD 118.00 for two sharing a tent and stove with a mat each, which is NZD 202.85. A rented Osprey Atmos AG 65 pack is USD 39.00 on top, and it sits outside the comparison, because the hut walker carries a pack too. Those are Outdoors Geek's 'from' prices for the shortest tier, so a trip that keeps the kit longer costs more. 3, 4, 5, 21, 2

What happens if I change my itinerary mid-trip?

A longer walk keeps the rental running. Outdoors Geek bills a third of the three-day rate for every extra day a kit is out and treats gear more than three days late as lost. For a Great Walk night you leave unused, ask DOC for its refund terms before you pay. 14, 1

What does the budget end of the camping kit cost?

Decathlon's US site prices a Forclaz MT100 foam mat at USD 15.00 on sale, USD 24.99 regular, a Forclaz Trek 500L self-inflating mattress at USD 40.00 on sale, USD 54.99 regular, and a Quechua 2 Second Easy 2-person pop-up tent at USD 160.00 on sale, USD 249.00 regular. That tent is built for car camping, and the site listed no camping stove and no 2-person footprint on 13 September 2026. 20, 24, 19, 18

What should be confirmed before paying for either option?

The complete overnight sequence with a named hut or campsite for every stage, your visitor category, the booking deadline, each cancellation rule and the transport connection at the finish. Ask DOC for its refund terms before you pay, and ask which rate an October night on the Routeburn takes. Keep the itinerary unfinished while any stage is unverified. 1, 15
