Prices are per person, per night, in the currency each operator charges, read from the operators' own pages. Dollar figures use the European Central Bank's reference rates for 11 September 2026; flights, insurance and gear sit outside every total.
How do you budget for a hut-to-hut hike?
A hut-to-hut trip is a chain, and each link has a price. On New Zealand's Milford Track the chain is fixed. You walk one way over three nights and four days, sleeping at Clinton, Mintaro and Dumpling huts, and camping is not permitted on the track. 6
In the Alps you design the chain yourself, and every night has the same parts. At the Wiesbadener Hütte in Austria's Silvretta range, a member of the German Alpine Club, the DAV, pays EUR 11 for a dormitory bed. Half board (a four-course dinner, breakfast and a litre of tea for the trail) adds EUR 58, more than five times the bed. 1
Start with a general hiking trip budget, then price the hut nights one at a time. The steps below give each cost its own line, so a change to one night shows up in the total.
Write the dated chain
List each night, the hut and the stage that reaches it. Check the hut is open that night: the Wiesbadener Hütte's 2026 summer season runs from 11 June to 27 September, with the closing date set by the weather. 1
Price the bed in the hut's own terms
Copy the category as the hut writes it: room or dormitory, member or non-member, and the age band. The Wiesbadener Hütte lists four age bands, each with a member and a non-member price. 1
Give meals and tax their own lines
Half board, trail lunches and drinks each get a line. The Cabane de Chanrion in the Swiss canton of Valais adds a tourist tax of CHF 1.50 for each adult. 4
Add the way in and the way out
The Milford Track starts with a boat to Glade Wharf and ends at Sandfly Point, where a boat runs to Milford Sound/Piopiotahi. Price both ends with the linear hike transport budget. 6
Put every cancellation deadline in the calendar
Huts of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) accept free cancellations until 18:00 two days before the booked night. The tables further down give every tier for four operators. 8

Read the bed category and the meal contract separately
Membership cuts the bed price. The half board stays the same. On the Wiesbadener Hütte's price list dated 17 July 2026, an adult member's dormitory bed is EUR 11 and a room EUR 16; non-members pay EUR 23 and EUR 28. Half board is a flat EUR 58 on top, one price for everyone. 1
The Cabane de Chanrion, an SAC hut in Valais, follows the same pattern in francs. Its 2026 list puts an adult member's night at CHF 32 and a non-member's at CHF 47. Half board is CHF 50 for both, and the tourist tax is CHF 1.50. 4
| Hut and bed | Member (EUR or CHF) | Non-member (EUR or CHF) | Member (USD) | Non-member (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wiesbadener Hütte, dormitory | EUR 11 + 58 = EUR 69 | EUR 23 + 58 = EUR 81 | $80 | $94 |
| Wiesbadener Hütte, room | EUR 16 + 58 = EUR 74 | EUR 28 + 58 = EUR 86 | $86 | $100 |
| Cabane de Chanrion, adult | CHF 32 + 50 + 1.50 tax = CHF 83.50 | CHF 47 + 50 + 1.50 tax = CHF 98.50 | $102 | $121 |
Bed plus half board for one adult. Chanrion's totals include its CHF 1.50 tourist tax; the Wiesbadener Hütte figures are bed and half board as its price list gives them. Dollars at ECB reference rates for 11 September 2026, USD 1.1592 and CHF 0.9451 per euro, with francs converted through the euro and rounded to the dollar.
Table view: A night with half board, member and non-member, three bed prices at two huts
| Item | Member (USD) | Non-member (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Wiesbadener Hütte, dormitory | $80 | $94 |
| Wiesbadener Hütte, room | $86 | $100 |
| Cabane de Chanrion, adult | $102 | $121 |
Each gap is the bed discount alone: EUR 12 at the Wiesbadener Hütte and CHF 15 at Chanrion. Half board costs members and non-members the same at both huts. Source: 1, 4, 7
Half board is most of the night. At Chanrion, CHF 50 of a member's CHF 83.50 goes on dinner and breakfast, about 60 percent. Budget the meal first, then see whether a discount on the bed changes the plan. 4
Huts under the shared hut rules of the German, Austrian and South Tyrol Alpine Clubs, in force since 1 January 2022, follow three meal rules. 10
- Beds and meals book separately. A hut has to let you reserve a member-rate bed without buying half board. 10
- A mountaineer's meal for members. The menu carries at least one, with a vegetarian option, at least 10 percent off and capped at EUR 11.00. 10
- Tea water and a cheaper soft drink. Members get hot water for tea at EUR 3.00 a litre, including two cups, and a non-alcoholic drink costs at least 40 percent less than the same amount of beer. 10
For lunches and snacks between huts, the multi-day hiking food budget compares carrying food with buying it. To weigh a hut night against a tent, read camping vs huts.
Does alpine club membership save money on your route?
Divide the membership fee by the saving per night. Under the DAV hut rules, members pay at least EUR 12 less per night than non-members at Category II huts, and at Category I huts non-members pay the member ceiling plus at least EUR 12. The Wiesbadener Hütte's gap is exactly EUR 12. 10, 1
The Munich and Oberland section of the DAV charges an adult EUR 121 for 2026. At EUR 12 a night, covering that takes 10.08 nights, so the membership pays for itself on the 11th night. CAS Neuchâtel, a section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC, or CAS in French), charges CHF 121 a year plus a one-time CHF 30 entry fee. At Chanrion's CHF 15 gap, its first year also pays off on the 11th night. 2, 1, 3, 4
| Membership | Cost (EUR or CHF) | Saving a night | Nights to cover the cost | Pays for itself on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DAV Munich and Oberland, adult, full year | EUR 121 | EUR 12, Wiesbadener Hütte | 121 ÷ 12 = 10.08 | Night 11 |
| DAV Munich and Oberland, adult joining after 1 March | EUR 108.90 | EUR 12 | 108.90 ÷ 12 = 9.08 | Night 10 |
| DAV Munich and Oberland, adult joining after 1 June | EUR 84.70 | EUR 12 | 84.70 ÷ 12 = 7.06 | Night 8 |
| DAV Munich and Oberland, adult joining after 1 September | EUR 60.50 | EUR 12 | 60.50 ÷ 12 = 5.04 | Night 6 |
| CAS Neuchâtel, individual, first year | CHF 151 (121 + 30 entry fee) | CHF 15, Cabane de Chanrion | 151 ÷ 15 = 10.07 | Night 11 |
| CAS Neuchâtel, individual, later years | CHF 121 | CHF 15 | 121 ÷ 15 = 8.07 | Night 9 |
The saving is an adult's bed discount at the named hut; half board costs members and non-members the same at both. Munich and Oberland lowers the first-year fee for adults who join after 1 March, 1 June or 1 September.
Table view: Nights before membership pays for itself, six cases at two clubs
| Item | Value (nights) |
|---|---|
| DAV, full year (EUR 121) | 11 nights |
| DAV, joining after 1 March (EUR 108.90) | 10 nights |
| DAV, joining after 1 June (EUR 84.70) | 8 nights |
| DAV, joining after 1 September (EUR 60.50) | 6 nights |
| CAS Neuchâtel, first year (CHF 151) | 11 nights |
| CAS Neuchâtel, later years (CHF 121) | 9 nights |
A full year of dues takes 11 nights at either hut. A late joiner pays less for a membership that still ends on 31 December, and the Wiesbadener Hütte's summer season closes on 27 September. Source: 2, 1, 3, 4
- Couples share the cost. A partner at the same address and bank account pays EUR 67 in Munich, so two adults pay EUR 188, save EUR 24 a night and break even on the 8th night. 2, 1
- Juniors break even sooner. Munich's junior rate for ages 18 to 25 is EUR 67, and the Wiesbadener Hütte's gap for ages 19 to 25 is still EUR 12, so the 6th night covers it. 2, 1
- Category I huts have a ceiling. An adult member pays at most EUR 36 in a double room, EUR 25 in a multi-bed room and EUR 15 on a mattress camp or in the winter room. 10
- Mountain inns give a smaller cut. At the clubs' Category III mountain inns, members get at least 10 percent off a night. 10
- SAC huts want the card. Member rates need a valid membership card, so carry it to every hut. 8
- Memberships renew by themselves. Munich and Oberland dues run from 1 January to 31 December; cancel by 30 September to stop the next year's fee. CAS Neuchâtel members who join from 1 October pay their first dues the following year. 2, 3
A worked budget: three nights on the Milford Track
Three huts, one direction, a booking for every night. The Milford Track runs from Glade Wharf to Sandfly Point over three nights and four days. The last 3 km of the final day follow a smooth, wide track that a prison labour gang built between 1890 and 1892. 6
New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC) prices hut nights by season and, in summer, by residency. From October to April an international visitor pays 43 percent more than a New Zealand resident, and children pay half. 5
| Track | Summer, NZ resident (NZD) | Summer, international (NZD) | Outside summer (NZD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milford Track | 106 | 152 | 30 |
| Routeburn Track | 88 | 132 | 30 in July and August, 35 in May and June |
Summer runs from October to April. Children pay half the adult fee.
| Night | Hut and the walk to reach it | NZ residents (NZD) | International visitors (NZD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Clinton Hut, 5 km from Glade Wharf | 212 | 304 |
| 2 | Mintaro Hut, 17.5 km | 212 | 304 |
| 3 | Dumpling Hut, 13 km | 212 | 304 |
| Total | Three hut nights | 636 | 912 |
Day 4 is an 18 km walk from Dumpling Hut to Sandfly Point, with no hut night. Two adults at NZD 106 or NZD 152 each per night, fees including GST. NZD 636 is about $370 and NZD 912 about $531 at ECB reference rates of 11 September 2026, NZD 1.9914 and USD 1.1592 per euro. The boats at each end, food, gear and any night before or after the walk sit outside this total.
Budget the edges before you book the huts. The fee buys three nights under a roof. Reaching Glade Wharf is its own line, and at Sandfly Point the walk ends with a boat to Milford Sound/Piopiotahi, where buses run back to Te Anau and on to Queenstown. 6

What does a guided walk in the Hollyford Valley cost?
Ngāi Tahu Tourism sells the Hollyford Wilderness Experience as one package. The Ngāi Tahu iwi, the original inhabitants of this part of New Zealand, owns the company, which runs this three-day, two-night guided walk through the Hollyford Valley in Fiordland National Park. The company names manaakitanga, or hospitality, as one of the core values that drive its business. 11, 12
| Season | Adult, or child aged 10 to 14 (NZD) | Adult, or child aged 10 to 14 (USD) | Single supplement (NZD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off-peak: November 2026 to January 2027, and April 2027 | 4,395 | 2,558 | 2,350 |
| Peak: 1 February to 31 March 2027 | 5,195 | 3,024 | 2,350 |
A walker taking a room alone adds the supplement: NZD 6,745 off-peak and NZD 7,545 at peak. Dollars at ECB reference rates of 11 September 2026, NZD 1.9914 and USD 1.1592 per euro, rounded to the dollar.
Compare what each price buys. Choose the Hollyford package when guides, meals and transfers in one price are worth more to you than the lowest bed cost. The guided vs self-guided comparison sets the two side by side. 5, 12

Gear is not included on the Milford Track either. A Hollyford walker taking a room alone adds the NZD 2,350 single supplement.
| When you cancel | The operator's terms | Off-peak adult (NZD) | Off-peak adult (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|

If it cancels a departure itself, guests on that trip receive a full refund or a free rebooking.
What changes for children and groups?
Children pay less, and the member saving holds. At the Wiesbadener Hütte the gap between member and non-member prices is EUR 12 in every age band, from children up to 6 to adults. That makes a family membership pay off fast. 1
| Hut and age | Member (EUR or CHF) | Non-member (EUR or CHF) |
|---|---|---|
| Wiesbadener Hütte, up to 6 | Room EUR 6, dormitory free | Room EUR 18, dormitory EUR 12 |
| Wiesbadener Hütte, 7 to 18 | Room EUR 10, dormitory EUR 6 | Room EUR 22, dormitory EUR 18 |
| Wiesbadener Hütte, 19 to 25 | Room EUR 14, dormitory EUR 10 | Room EUR 26, dormitory EUR 22 |

| Cabane de Chanrion, young people | CHF 15, ages 13 to 22 | CHF 23, ages 13 to 17 |
Beds only. Chanrion's half board is CHF 30 for children aged 1 to 12 and CHF 50 from 13, for members and non-members alike; its tourist tax is CHF 0.75 for ages 6 to 15 and CHF 1.50 from 16.
Munich and Oberland's EUR 157 family rate covers two adults and all children born from 2008 to 2026. CAS Neuchâtel's family rate covers up to two adults with children aged 6 to 17, at CHF 200 a year plus a one-time CHF 50 entry fee. 2, 3
| Hut and beds | Member beds | Non-member beds | Saving a night | Family membership | Pays for itself on |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wiesbadener Hütte, dormitory, children aged 7 to 18 | EUR 34 | EUR 82 | EUR 48 | EUR 157, DAV Munich and Oberland | Night 4 |
| Cabane de Chanrion, children aged 6 to 12 | CHF 94 | CHF 140 | CHF 46 | CHF 250 in the first year, CAS Neuchâtel (200 + 50 entry fee) | Night 6 |
Member beds: 2 × EUR 11 + 2 × EUR 6, and 2 × CHF 32 + 2 × CHF 15. Non-member beds: 2 × EUR 23 + 2 × EUR 18, and 2 × CHF 47 + 2 × CHF 23. With half board and tourist tax, the Chanrion family night is CHF 258.50 for members and CHF 304.50 for non-members. After the first year, the CHF 200 family fee pays for itself on night 5.
Groups book earlier and confirm the headcount. The Appalachian Mountain Club gives parties of 10 or more a 30-day notice period for refunds, against 14 days for smaller parties. Under DAV rules, a hut takes advance bookings for at most 90 percent of its sleeping places, and SAC huts can charge the no-show fee for a late change in the number of guests. 13, 10, 8
What does it cost to cancel a hut booking late?
At SAC huts, a booking binds both sides once the hut confirms it. The confirmation can be verbal or written, and the hut warden can ask for a deposit up to the full value of the stay. DAV rules leave each hut free to set its own deposit and cancellation fee, so ask for both before you pay. 8, 10
| When | What the terms say |
|---|---|
| Until 18:00, two days before the booked night | Cancellations, amendments and rescheduling are accepted free of charge, through the online hut reservation system or by telephone |
| Later, or with no notice | The hut warden is entitled to charge a no-show fee to the card on file, or issue an invoice, up to the total value of the booked and unused accommodation and half board |
| Weather exception | The no-show charge falls away with written proof of a confirmed MeteoSwiss severe-weather warning, or an SLF avalanche danger level raised from the previous day, for the route and day; the hut warden must be told by 18:00 the day before |
Each hut sets its no-show fee within that maximum and has to state it when you enquire and again when it confirms.
| When you cancel | Fee (CHF) | Fee (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| 24 to 48 hours before | 30.00 | 37 |
| Less than 24 hours before | 50.00 | 61 |
| No-show | 82.00 | 101 |
CHF 82 equals an adult member's bed and half board, CHF 32 + CHF 50. Dollars at ECB reference rates of 11 September 2026, CHF 0.9451 and USD 1.1592 per euro, rounded to the dollar.
| Party size | Cancel early (USD) | Cancel late (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| 9 or fewer | 14 or more days before arrival: full refund less a $10 per person, per night fee | Fewer than 14 days before arrival: no refunds |
| 10 or more | 30 or more days before arrival: full refund less a $10 per person, per night fee | Fewer than 30 days before arrival: no refunds |
Two people cancelling a three-night booking early pay $60 in fees, 2 × 3 × $10.
Ngāi Tahu Tourism's four tiers for the Hollyford walk sit with its prices above. Keep every operator's deadlines in one calendar before the first payment leaves your account.
Turn research into a booking decision
Let the numbers choose. Each decision below follows from the prices on this page, read on 13 September 2026. 2, 3
- Join DAV Munich and Oberland when your year holds 11 member-rate nights at Wiesbadener Hütte prices, 8 for a couple with a partner membership, or 4 for a family of four in dormitories. 2, 1
- Join CAS Neuchâtel for Chanrion-priced nights when the first year holds 11 nights, or 6 for a family of four. 3, 4
- Stay a non-member for a shorter trip: below those counts, the fee costs more than the bed discount returns.
- Price the boats at both ends before you pay for the Milford huts, and start walking only with all three nights booked. 6
- Pick Ngāi Tahu Tourism's Hollyford walk when one price for guides, lodges, meals and transport is worth NZD 4,395 per person off-peak to you. 12
- Before any payment, get each hut's deposit, cancellation fee and payment methods in writing, and check the trekking permit rules for routes outside Europe.
Then pack the membership card and cash for the Wiesbadener Hütte, which takes nothing else. 8, 1
Frequently asked questions
Does half board cover everything I will eat?
It covers dinner and breakfast. At the Wiesbadener Hütte, the EUR 58 half board is a four-course dinner, breakfast and a litre of marching tea. Trail lunches, snacks and other drinks go on their own budget lines. 1
Should I join an alpine club for one trip?
Join when the trip holds enough member-rate nights to cover the fee: 11 for a full-year adult at the Wiesbadener Hütte or the Cabane de Chanrion, and 6 for a DAV adult who joins after 1 September, for a membership that ends on 31 December. Munich and Oberland renews automatically, so cancel by 30 September if the trip was your only reason to join. 2, 1, 4, 3
When are Alpine huts open?
Each hut sets its own season. The Wiesbadener Hütte opens from 12 February to 26 April 2026 for winter and from 11 June to 27 September 2026 for summer, and the weather decides the summer closing date. Check the dates for every hut before you fix the chain. 1
What happens if I arrive at a hut without a booking?
On the Milford Track, DOC can charge a penalty or turn you away when the hut is full. Under DAV rules, huts accept advance bookings for at most 90 percent of their sleeping places. Book every night your route depends on. 6, 10
Can I pay for a hut night by card?
Ask each hut before you go. SAC's terms allow card, electronic or foreign-currency payment where the hut offers it and has agreed in advance, and unattended SAC huts take cash in the box or a bank transfer within 10 days. The Wiesbadener Hütte takes cash only. 8, 1
Can I do hut-to-hut hiking in the United States?
Yes. The Appalachian Mountain Club has run huts in the White Mountain National Forest since 1888, under a US Forest Service special-use permit. Its eight huts sit between 2,635 feet at Zealand Falls and 5,014 feet at Lakes of the Clouds. Lonesome Lake has the shortest approach, 1.5 miles, and Lonesome Lake to Greenleaf is a 4.5-mile stage with 2,540 feet of climbing. Ask AMC for the nightly price before you compare. 14
Do children pay less on the Milford Track?
Yes. DOC charges a child half the adult hut fee: in summer, NZD 53 a night for New Zealand residents and NZD 76 for international visitors, or NZD 159 and NZD 228 for the three nights. Outside summer a child's night is NZD 15. 5
Which exchange rate should I use for hut prices?
Budget in the hut's own currency and convert at your bank's rate on the day you pay. The dollar figures on this page use the European Central Bank's reference rates for 11 September 2026: USD 1.1592, CHF 0.9451 and NZD 1.9914 per euro, published for information. 7
