Costa Rica car rental insurance: what two weeks really costs

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Mandatory third-party liability runs $15.95 to $20.95 a day at three Costa Rica agencies, and it goes on every contract whatever your credit card covers. 2, 3
  • Fourteen days in a compact 4x4 with zero-deductible cover comes to $866.60, of which $601.30 is insurance and $265.30 is the car itself. 4, 2
  • Using your card's cover takes a printed letter from the issuer, and it lifts the hold on your card from $100 to $2,000. Amex's Premium Car Rental Protection names Costa Rica as covered; Chase's page names no countries at all. 2, 3, 5, 6
  • Tolls are loose change. All nine Ruta 27 plazas in one direction total ₡3,940, about $8.70 at ₡452.82 to the dollar. 1, 7
  • Two people paying $433.30 each for the insured car could buy six to nine Easy Ride shuttle legs instead, at $45 to $69 a seat. 4, 2, 8

The counter is where the price changes

The quote said $18.95 a day. The counter says $61.90. A compact 4x4 for fourteen days out of Juan Santamaría airport prices at $18.95 a day in Vamos's own booking engine. Add the insurance Costa Rica requires, then the zero-deductible cover that drops the hold on your card to $100, and the daily rate more than triples. 4, 2

That gap is the subject of this page. Costa Rican law puts a liability policy on every rental car, and no card benefit stands in for it. What a card can do is cover the car itself, which changes the paperwork, the deposit and about $378.00 over a fortnight. 2, 3

Prices here come from three agencies that publish their insurance rates, read on 25 September 2026: Vamos, Adobe and Sun Valley. Tolls come from the regulator and from the company that runs Ruta 27. Shuttle fares come from Easy Ride's own route pages. 2, 9, 3, 10, 1, 8

What insurance is mandatory in Costa Rica?

One liability policy, required by law, priced between $15.95 and $20.95 a day at the three agencies below.

Third Party Liability rides on every rental contract in the country. Vamos and Sun Valley call it TPL, Adobe calls it PLI, and all three sell the same legal requirement. It pays the people outside your car: their injuries, their bumper, their fence. Damage to the car you are driving sits outside it, and that second policy is the CDW. 2, 9, 3

The price of that one line moves a lot. Vamos charges $15.95 a day for sedans, intermediates, standards and fullsize cars, and $17.95 for premium. Sun Valley charges $20.95. Five dollars a day of daylight between two agencies on the item nobody can shop around, or $70.00 across two weeks. 2, 3

Sun Valley, TPL and Full CDW, from$45.95zero$643.30

Vamos quotes $47.95 a day all in for premium classes. Sun Valley's Full CDW runs $25 to $37 a day by its own summary line (a separate section on the same page also prints $25 to $35), and it opens only on rentals of seven days or more; the column uses the $25 end. Adobe publishes limits and deductibles for PLI and LDW and no daily price. 2, 3, 9

The limits behind those prices differ more than the prices do. Vamos's TPL tops out near $271,000 for injuries to people outside the car, and the same again for their property with a 20% deductible, at the ₡554 rate printed on its page. Adobe's PLI pays up to $20,000 of third-party property damage and up to $100,000 for injury or death. 2, 9

Adobe's Supplemental Protection Plan zeroes both of its $1,130 deductibles and lifts the third-party property limit to $2,000,000 an event. Sun Valley describes an 80/20 split on its TPL: the policy pays 80% of third-party damage and the renter carries the rest. Read the limit, then the deductible, then the price. 9, 3

What does two weeks in a rental car actually cost?

One car, one agency, fourteen days, every line from the same quote.

Fourteen days, one compact 4x4, everything insured to zero deductible: $866.60. The car is $265.30 of that. Mandatory TPL adds $223.30. Basic CDW adds $126.00, and the Full CDW layer on top adds $252.00, which is what buys the zero deductible and the $100 hold. 4, 2

The hold is a hold, taken at pickup and released two to five business days after the car comes back. The $378.00 between the two columns is the price of a zero deductible over fourteen days. 2

Park the car for part of the trip and the arithmetic turns. Insurance bills by the day whether the car moves or sits under a mango tree at the hotel. Four beach days with the keys in the drawer is $171.80 of all-in Vamos cover doing nothing at all. 2

Does my credit card cover a rental car in Costa Rica?

For the car itself, often yes. For the mandatory liability policy, no card in this section reaches it.

Bring a letter, not a card number. Vamos and Sun Valley both want written proof from the issuer before they will let you decline their CDW. Turn up without it and the in-house waiver goes on the contract, at $9.00 to $35.00 a day depending on the tier you land in. 2, 3

  • Your full name, spelled the way the card and the reservation spell it. 2
  • The last four digits of the card that pays for the rental and carries the deposit. 2, 3
  • A line confirming the cover applies in Costa Rica, which Sun Valley asks for by name. 3
  • Paper, or an email you can print at the hotel. A phone screen at the counter is a slow conversation.

American Express's Premium Car Rental Protection covers Costa Rica. Its own FAQ excludes six countries: Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica and New Zealand. Everywhere else gets primary cover on the rental vehicle for up to 42 consecutive days. Enrollment is one time per card, and a flat fee applies to each rental. 5

Chase is vaguer. Sapphire Preferred and Reserve give primary cover for theft and damage when the card pays for the rental and you decline the agency's waiver, for rentals of 31 consecutive days or fewer. Chase's page names no countries and asks cardholders to call before departure to confirm the itinerary. For a two-week trip, make the call. 6

What deposit will they hold on my card?

The deposit tracks the insurance, not the car. Take Vamos's Full CDW and the hold is $100. Take Basic CDW and it is $750. Lean on your own card and it jumps to $2,000. Same car, same fortnight, a $1,900 swing in what has to be free on your credit limit the morning you collect the keys. 2

Vamos states its own range as $100 to $2,000 and reports that other agencies in Costa Rica may hold up to $5,000; that last figure is Vamos describing its competitors. 11

A hold eats your available credit for as long as it sits there. Two weeks of hotels, dinners and park tickets on the same card as a $2,000 deposit can crowd a trip badly. Put the deposit on a second card with room to spare, and read MMT's foreign transaction fees guide before you decide which card pays for what. 2

How much are the tolls on the way to the coast?

Costa Rica's tolls are small money, collected often. Ruta 27, the highway from San José down to the Pacific, runs nine light-vehicle plazas at ₡190 to ₡760 each under the tariff effective July 2026. Pay every one of them in a single direction and you have spent ₡3,940, about $8.70 at the Central Bank rate for 24 September 2026. 1, 7

Converted at ₡452.82 per US dollar, the Banco Central de Costa Rica MONEX weighted average for 24 September 2026. The San José to San Ramón corridor toll stays suspended until permanent stations open. 7, 10

Drive the whole Pacific corridor twice and the tolls come to ₡7,880, about $17.40. That is about two-fifths of a single day of zero-deductible insurance ($42.95). Tolls are the line travelers worry about and the one that barely registers on the bill. 1, 7, 2

Is a shuttle cheaper than renting a car?

Fixed fares, published by route, against $61.90 a day for a car insured to zero deductible.

Easy Ride publishes a fare for every route this trip uses. San José airport to any downtown hotel is $49 one way for the vehicle, up to four people. From Arenal and La Fortuna the fares are per person: $45 to Monteverde by the jeep, boat and jeep crossing, $65 to the airport, $69 to Jacó, $69 to Manuel Antonio. 12, 8

Fares are per person one way in US dollars, except the airport express, which prices the whole vehicle. Surfboards add $20 each. Shared shuttles carry no pets. 8, 12

Two people, fourteen days, insured to zero deductible: $866.60, or $433.30 each. Every leg on that table sells for $45 to $69 a seat, so the car costs each of you six to nine shuttle rides. Drop to TPL only and lean on a card and the car is $244.30 each, roughly four legs. 4, 2, 8

Easy Ride is one operator among several. TBT Costa Rica sells the same Lake Arenal crossing for $33 a seat on its 8 a.m. jeep-boat-jeep, the fare MMT's two weeks in Costa Rica itinerary uses, and that puts the insured car closer to thirteen legs. 13

The car buys what a fare leaves out: a 5 a.m. start for the cloud forest, a cooler in the back. With the shuttle you get the mountain road between Arenal and Monteverde with someone else at the wheel, a boat across the lake, and no two hours at a rental counter. 8

What to settle before you book

Five things decide whether the counter goes smoothly. All five are settled from home, in an afternoon, for free.

  1. Match your license to your entry stamp

A foreign license works in Costa Rica for as long as the 90-day immigration permit stamped in your passport. An International Driving Permit matters only where the home license uses a non-Latin alphabet. Driving without a valid license draws a fine of ₡280,000 or more, about $500 by Adobe's own conversion, and the police may impound the car. 11, 9

  2. Check the driver's age against the cover, not the counter

Vamos rents to drivers from 18, with no upper limit. Drivers aged 18 to 20 carry a doubled Basic CDW deductible of $1,500 and sit outside Full CDW altogether, so the zero-deductible route closes for them. 14, 2

  3. Put the 72-hour line in your calendar

Vamos bills a one-day rental when a change or cancellation lands inside 72 hours of the start, and the same one-day charge plus any delivery fee for a no-show. 14

  4. Ask your issuer for the letter now

Issuers take days to produce it. Sun Valley wants the Costa Rica wording in writing; Vamos wants the name and the last four digits. Without the letter in hand, the in-house waiver goes on the contract and the saving evaporates. 3, 2

  5. Decide which card carries the deposit

A $2,000 hold on the card you also use for hotels and dinners squeezes the trip. A second card with headroom keeps the spending card clear. 2, 3

Then line up the rest of the trip. The two weeks in Costa Rica itinerary lays out the fourteen nights this car is for, the Costa Rica country guide gathers the wider planning, the credit card points and transfer partners page covers what an $866.60 rental bill can earn you back, and if the fortnight is turning into a season, the Costa Rica digital nomad requirements page sets out the income and insurance evidence. 4, 2

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my own car insurance from home in Costa Rica?

For the mandatory liability policy, no. Costa Rican law requires the local cover, and the agencies sell it as TPL or PLI at $15.95 to $20.95 a day. A home policy or a card benefit can stand in for the CDW, the separate policy that covers damage to the rental car. 2, 9, 3

Is TPL the same thing as CDW?

Two different policies. TPL pays the other party: their injuries, their vehicle, their property. CDW waives your bill for damage to the car you rented. Costa Rica requires the first and sells you the second. Vamos's Basic CDW is $9.00 a day with a $750 deductible; Full CDW adds $18.00 a day and takes the deductible to zero. 2

What does a Costa Rica rental car cost per day once insurance is added?

At the November quote in this page, $61.90 a day all in: $18.95 for a compact 4x4, $15.95 for mandatory TPL, $9.00 for Basic CDW and $18.00 for Full CDW. Taking TPL only and leaning on a card brings it to $34.90 a day, with a $2,000 hold on the card in place of a $100 one. 4, 2

How much deposit should I expect on my credit card?

Between $100 and $2,000 at Vamos, depending on the cover you take, and $1,000 ($1,130 with tax) at Adobe. Sun Valley holds $400 with Full CDW and $2,000 when your own card covers the car. Vamos reports that some agencies in Costa Rica hold up to $5,000. 2, 9, 3, 11

How long can I drive on my home license in Costa Rica?

Vamos states 90 days, tied to the immigration stamp in your passport. Adobe's FAQ mentions an extension to 180 days for some travelers. The two sources conflict, so read the date on your own entry stamp and treat that as the limit. 11, 9

What happens if I cancel my Costa Rica car rental?

Vamos asks for 72 hours' notice on any change or cancellation. Inside that window, or as a no-show, it bills a one-day rental plus any delivery fee. Check the same clause at whichever agency you book, because the window sets how late you can switch to shuttles. 14

Are shuttles cheaper for a solo traveler in Costa Rica?

Usually. Easy Ride charges per person on the Arenal routes, $45 to Monteverde and $69 to Jacó or Manuel Antonio, against $61.90 a day for a fully insured car. The airport express is the exception: $49 buys the whole vehicle for up to four people, so one rider pays the same as a family. 8, 12, 4, 2
