Two weeks in Costa Rica: itinerary and real costs

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.
Arenal Volcano from La Fortuna, Alajuela Province, Costa Rica. The national park at its base charges $15 plus tax for a foreign adult. 1 · Central Intelligence Agency · Source · Public domain

Fourteen nights across four bases, with the transfers priced wherever the operator publishes a fare, the 2026 park fees dated, and the nights to cut if you have ten days.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • A US passport holder can stay 180 days visa-free, under the Costa Rican entry directive in force since 17 November 2025, with one day of passport validity required at the border. Older guides still say 90 days. 2
  • Fourteen nights split 2, 3, 3, 4, 2: San Jose, Monteverde, La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio, then San Jose again. Two of those days go to transfers that run about 4 hours each. 3, 4
  • The priced spine of the trip runs $72.08 to $274.33 per adult: two transfers, two park entries and one hot-springs day. Lodging, food, flights and guides sit on top. 3, 4, 1, 5, 6
  • Book Manuel Antonio first. Tickets come only from the government portal, the park closes every Tuesday, and the daily cap sits near 2,500 people. 5, 7
  • The best soak in La Fortuna is free. El Choyin is the Tabacon river itself, heated by the volcano, while a day pass at The Springs Resort runs $124.30 to $141.25. 6

The route: 14 nights, four bases

The 2 p.m. jeep pulls out of Monteverde and drops you at a dock on Lake Arenal. A boat crosses with the volcano ahead of it. A second jeep climbs into La Fortuna. That transfer costs $40, takes about 4 hours, and replaces the long drive around the lake. It is the best $40 on this itinerary. 4

Two weeks buys four bases at a walking pace. This route uses San Jose as bookends, Monteverde for cloud forest, La Fortuna for the volcano and the hot springs, and Manuel Antonio for the park and the beach. Every leg runs on a scheduled service you can hold in advance.

The nights split 2, 3, 3, 4, 2, which adds to 14. Two of those days are travel days. Plan to land somewhere new by mid-afternoon on each of them, with nothing booked for the evening.

ROUTETwo weeks in Costa Rica, 14 nights14 nights
  1. 01
    San Jose2 nights

Land, sleep off the flight, and start the trip on level ground before the first long transfer.

→ Arrive at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO). The coast is about a 3-hour drive from the same airport, so leaving it until the end keeps that drive out of day one. 8
  2. 02
    Monteverde3 nights

Three nights covers the Cloud Forest Preserve's day walk, its guided Natural History Walk and its Night Walk, which open at three different times. 9

→ From San Jose by shared shuttle, $50 to $60 over 4 to 5 hours, or the public bus at $6 to $7 over 5 to 6 hours from the 6:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. departure. 3
  3. 03
    La Fortuna3 nights

Arenal Volcano National Park at $15 plus tax, a free soak at El Choyin, and a third day held back for rain. 1, 6

    → Jeep-boat-jeep across Lake Arenal, shared at $33 for the 8 a.m. run or $40 at 2 p.m., about 3.5 to 4 hours. 4
  4. 04
    Manuel Antonio4 nights

Four nights buys one park morning and three days that answer to nobody. The Tuesday closure makes the spare nights useful rather than lazy. 5

→ Interbus runs a daily shuttle to Manuel Antonio from La Fortuna and publishes no fare for that leg, so ask for the quote in writing. 10
  5. 05
    San Jose2 nights

A buffer before the flight home, and a second run at the capital with the trip already behind you.

→ Interbus leaves San Jose for Manuel Antonio at 7:30 a.m. daily on a 4.5-hour run, and the return follows the same road. 10

With less time: With ten nights, take San Jose down to one night at each end and La Fortuna to two. With seven, pick two bases: Monteverde and La Fortuna, or La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio. Keep the jeep-boat-jeep whichever pair you choose. 4

Costa Rica rewards a slow plan, and the country lets you make one. If the two weeks are really a scouting trip for something longer, the Costa Rica digital nomad stay page sets out the income and insurance evidence that route asks for.

How many nights does each stop need?

Opening hours set the floor, not distance. Three nights is the minimum in Monteverde and La Fortuna.

Three nights is the floor in the mountains, and four earns its keep on the coast. Monteverde's three walks open at 7:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., so the reserve alone fills two mornings and an evening. Arenal's park runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, which sounds generous until an afternoon of green-season rain takes a day. 9, 1

Hours read from the reserve's and the parks' own published pages on 25 September 2026. Manuel Antonio's Tuesday closure is the one hard constraint in the whole route. 9, 1, 5

How do you get between the stops?

Three ways cover the same road, and they cost about $6, $55 and $90. The public bus from San Jose to Monteverde takes 5 to 6 hours for $6 to $7, leaving at 6:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. A shared group shuttle does it in 4 to 5 hours for $50 to $60. A private transfer for one to four people runs $80 to $100 in 3 to 4 hours. 3

Fares are the operators' own published figures on 25 September 2026 and move with season. Interbus confirms daily Manuel Antonio shuttles from Jaco, Monteverde and La Fortuna while publishing a fare for none of them, so ask in writing. A sixth passenger on the private jeep-boat-jeep adds $28. 3, 4, 10

The jeep-boat-jeep is the crossing people talk about afterwards. A 4WD collects you, a boat runs the length of Lake Arenal, and a second 4WD climbs into La Fortuna. Shared seats cost $33 at 8 a.m. or $40 at 2 p.m. Private is $260 for up to five, which works out at $52 each against $165 for five shared seats. Cancel 24 hours ahead for a full refund. 4

A rental car changes the day as much as the budget. Manuel Antonio National Park keeps no official parking lot, so drivers use paid private lots along Route 618, cash only. Price the card fees on the deposit before you sign: the travel payment quote worksheet shows where they hide. 5

Monteverde: three nights above the clouds

The Cloud Forest Preserve sells three different walks, and each one shows a different forest. The Cloud Forest Walk opens 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The guided Natural History Walk runs 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Night Walk opens for half an hour only, 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and the forest closes behind you. 9

Three nights gives two whole days. Spend the first on the Cloud Forest Walk from opening, the second with a guide on the Natural History Walk, and one evening on the Night Walk. That leaves an afternoon spare for the cloud to lift, which it may do while you are eating lunch. 9

  • Two reserves, two owners. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve runs under the Tropical Science Center. Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, high on the Tilaran ridge, belongs to the Santa Elena technical high school and keeps its own site and bookings. 9, 11
  • Both reserves sell their tickets through a booking widget. Open the reserve's own page and read the price on the day you book. 9, 11
  • Monteverde Lodge & Gardens holds 31 rooms inside its own private cloud forest reserve, within walking distance of downtown Santa Elena. After four hours on a shuttle, a base you can walk out of counts for more than it sounds. 12

La Fortuna: three nights under Arenal

Arenal Volcano National Park charges a foreign adult $15 plus tax and a child $5 plus tax, and its main visitor center runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Go at opening. Arenal Observatory Lodge is the only hotel inside the park boundary and the closest bed to the cone, which makes an early start a short walk. 1

The best soak in town costs nothing. El Choyin is the Tabacon river, warmed by the volcano. People in vests run the roadside parking for a small cash fee. Bring a towel and shoes you can wade in. 6

Titoku's and The Springs' figures come from a dated Costa Rica travel publisher because neither resort shows a price as page text. Tabacon describes both tiers on its own site, sells the figure through a booking widget, and says prices include tax and rise from mid-December to early January and in the late March window. 6, 13

The Maleku are this region's own people, and they govern their own territory here. Their demarcated land sits in the San Rafael de Guatuso district, across three palenques: El Sol, Margarita and Tonjibe. Costa Rica's 2011 national census counted 478 Maleku in the three palenques and 701 across the country. 14

They hold that ground because they took it back. A 1976 presidential decree demarcated 2,993.5 hectares, the 1977 Indigenous Law confirmed it, and after an illegal boundary reduction Costa Rica's Supreme Court restored the full demarcation in 1999 in a case Maleku people brought. Their own association, ADI Maleku, runs the territory today, and it is the first contact for anyone hoping to visit. 14

Manuel Antonio: four nights on the Pacific

One park morning, and three days that belong to you. Manuel Antonio National Park charges $18.08 for a foreign adult and $5.65 for a child aged 2 to 12, tax included, and opens 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Wednesday to Monday. Under 2s go free. Two adults and two children pay $47.46 for the booking. 5

  1. Pick the date, and skip Tuesday

The park closes every Tuesday. Choose the morning you want before you book a single night on the coast. 5

  2. Book on the government portal

SINAC's own online reservation system lists Manuel Antonio among the protected areas that require an advance booking, and the gate sells nothing on the day. 7, 5

  3. Arrive for the 7 a.m. opening

The park runs 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and caps admission near 2,500 people a day. An early entry also puts the walk in before the afternoon heat. 5

  4. Solve parking before you drive

The park keeps no official lot of its own. Paid private lots line Route 618 and take cash only. Staying 10 minutes away, as Si Como No does, turns the problem into a walk. 5, 8

  5. Leave the other three days loose

Quepos and the coast road fill four nights without a plan. Then it is about a 3-hour drive from the resort strip back to the airport at San Jose. 8

Season decides this coast more than the calendar does. December to April is the dry season, with the most reliable wildlife sightings and the biggest crowds. May and November are shoulder months, quieter and cheaper. June to October is green season, with heavier afternoon rain, and September and October are the wettest of it. The Costa Rica country guide holds the rest of the country's field notes. 5

What does two weeks in Costa Rica cost?

The part of this itinerary with a published price, per adult, and the one decision that owns most of the spread.

The published part of this itinerary comes to $72.08 at the low end and $274.33 at the high end, per adult. That covers two transfers, two park entries and one hot-springs day. Lodging, food, flights, guides and reserve tickets sit outside it, because the places on this route sell those through booking engines instead of price pages. 3, 4, 1, 5, 6

Arenal's fee is quoted before tax on its source page; Manuel Antonio's includes IVA. The La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio shuttle and the return leg to San Jose carry no published fare and stay out of these totals, as do lodging, food, flights, guides and both Monteverde reserves. Private transfers are excluded because their cost per adult depends on how many of you there are; the transfers table above carries those fares. Sums checked line by line: 6 + 33 + 15 + 18.08 + 0 = 72.08; 50 + 33 + 15 + 18.08 + 33 = 149.08; 60 + 40 + 15 + 18.08 + 141.25 = 274.33. 3, 4, 1, 5, 6

Getting between places takes $83 of the $149.08, more than both park entries and the springs together. Swap the shuttle for the 6:30 a.m. public bus and Titoku for El Choyin and the same fortnight costs $72.08. Source: 3, 4, 6, 5, 1

The spread is $202.25, and one decision owns most of it. A pass at The Springs Resort runs $124.30 to $141.25 per person for two consecutive days, about $62 to $71 a day, against $33 at Titoku and nothing at El Choyin. All three heat the same water from the same volcano. Spend the difference on a guide. 6

Costa Rica's currency is the colon, and every provider on this route publishes in US dollars, so there is nothing here to convert. Cards still cost something abroad: the travel currency worksheet tests a 10 percent move.

When should you go, and what do you book first?

Book the park, then the boat, then the road. Manuel Antonio's Tuesday closure and its online-only tickets set the shape of all 14 nights, and everything else bends around them. The jeep-boat-jeep comes second because a shared seat at $33 refunds in full up to 24 hours out. 5, 7, 4

  • Manuel Antonio ticket held on SINAC's reservation portal for a Wednesday-to-Monday morning, with the Tuesday closure already marked on your calendar. 7, 5
  • Jeep-boat-jeep seat booked for the 8 a.m. run at $33, refundable in full up to 24 hours ahead. 4
  • San Jose to Monteverde chosen: shared shuttle at $50 to $60, or the 6:30 a.m. public bus at $6 to $7 if the day is yours to spend. 3
  • A written quote for the La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio shuttle, since Interbus confirms the route runs daily and publishes no fare for it. 10
  • Passport checked for at least one day of remaining validity, and the whole stay kept inside 180 days and inside the passport's own expiry. 2
  • Cover chosen before the first deposit: the travel insurance comparison separates a fortnight from a long stay.

Timing follows the coast. Dry runs December to April on the central Pacific, shoulder falls in May and November, and green season holds June to October with September and October the wettest. Green season means a clear morning and a soaked afternoon, which is exactly why La Fortuna keeps a spare day in this plan. 5

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Costa Rica as a US citizen?

No. Costa Rica's November 2025 entry directive places the United States in Group I: visa-free entry and a stay of up to 180 calendar days, with a passport that needs only one day of remaining validity at the border. The authorized stay still ends when the passport expires. Confirm the terms with your airline before you fly. 2

Is 2 weeks in Costa Rica enough time?

Yes, for four bases at a comfortable pace. Two of the fourteen nights go to transfers of about 4 hours each. Adding a fifth base would buy another travel day and lose a morning in the cloud forest. 3, 4

What does a 14 day Costa Rica itinerary look like from San Jose?

Run it forward or in reverse. Forward, as this page lays it out, spends two nights in San Jose, three in Monteverde, three in La Fortuna, four at Manuel Antonio, then two more in San Jose before the flight. Reversed, Manuel Antonio comes first on Interbus's daily direct shuttle from San Jose and Monteverde comes last, which suits a flight that lands late: the direct coastal shuttle beats a 5 to 6 hour mountain transfer on a short night's sleep. Either direction, fix the Manuel Antonio nights first so the park morning doesn't land on a Tuesday, when the park is closed. 10, 3, 5

How much does two weeks in Costa Rica cost?

The part with a published price comes to $72.08 to $274.33 per adult: two transfers, Arenal's $15 plus tax, Manuel Antonio's $18.08 with tax, and one hot-springs day between $0 and $141.25. Lodging, food, flights and guides sit on top. 3, 4, 1, 5, 6

How do I buy Manuel Antonio National Park tickets?

Through SINAC's own online reservation portal, in advance. The park lists on that system as an area requiring a booking, and the gate sells nothing on the day. Entry is $18.08 for a foreign adult and $5.65 for a child aged 2 to 12, tax included. The park opens 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Monday, closes every Tuesday, and caps admission near 2,500 people. 7, 5

Which Monteverde cloud forest reserve should I book?

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, run by the Tropical Science Center, for a first visit: it sells a self-guided Cloud Forest Walk from 7:30 a.m., a guided Natural History Walk until 1 p.m., and a Night Walk that opens 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, run by the local technical high school, is the quieter second day. Both sell tickets through widgets, so read the price on their own pages. 9, 11

Should I rent a car or book shuttles in Costa Rica?

Shuttles cover this route without a steering wheel. San Jose to Monteverde is $50 to $60 shared, Monteverde to La Fortuna is $33 or $40 by jeep-boat-jeep, and Interbus runs daily to Manuel Antonio from La Fortuna. A car adds flexibility and a parking problem: Manuel Antonio National Park keeps no lot of its own, so drivers pay cash at private lots along Route 618. 3, 4, 10, 5

Are the paid hot springs in La Fortuna worth it?

One of them, once. El Choyin is the Tabacon river itself, volcanically heated and free, with roadside parking for a small cash fee. Titoku charges about $33 for a basic adult day pass or $52 with a meal. The Springs Resort runs $124.30 to $141.25 per person for a pass good across two consecutive days, about $62 to $71 a day. Tabacon publishes two tiers and shows the figure only at booking. 6, 13
