SJO or Liberia: which Costa Rica airport do you fly into?

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Fares, transfer times and the flat car fee between the two gateways, read from the airlines' and operators' own pages on 25 September 2026.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Liberia priced lower from all three JetBlue cities checked on 25 September 2026: $177 one way from New York-JFK against $222 into San Jose, a $45 gap on a single seat. 2, 3
  • An open jaw saved two travelers from New York $40 once JetBlue's fares and the flat $50 one-way car fee between the airports were counted. 3, 2, 4
  • Southwest's Houston Hobby nonstop reaches San Jose every day of the week and Liberia only at weekends. A midweek arrival from Hobby lands at SJO. 5, 6
  • Liberia to Monteverde is $95 a person and 3 to 4 hours; Liberia to La Fortuna is $85 and 3.5 to 4.5 hours. The private van to Monteverde costs $310, which undercuts four shared seats at $380. 7, 8
  • No US program publishes a fixed mileage chart to Costa Rica this season. Southwest says on its own page that the points needed track the fare, so compare points against cash on the day. 9

Two gateways, one fortnight

On 25 September 2026, JetBlue quoted $177 for a one-way seat from New York-JFK into Liberia and $222 into San Jose. 2, 3 Same airline, same day, same country, a $45 gap. That is the kind of number that reorders a two-week route before you book a single hotel.

Costa Rica gives you two international front doors. Juan Santamaria (SJO) sits in Alajuela province, 10 kilometers from downtown San Jose, about a 30-minute drive when the road is clear. 1 Daniel Oduber Quiros (LIR) sits 11 kilometers outside the city of Liberia in Guanacaste, on a single 2,750-meter runway long enough for wide-body jets including the Boeing 747. 10

This page prices the choice for the two-week Costa Rica itinerary: San Jose, Monteverde, La Fortuna, then the Manuel Antonio coast. Every fare, fee and transfer time below was read on an airline's, a rental company's or a shuttle operator's own page on 25 September 2026.

The short version: pick the airport your first three nights want, then let the fare decide the way home. SJO is the closer door for the capital, the Central Valley and the southern Pacific. Liberia earns its fare gap when Monteverde or La Fortuna is your first bed. 1

What is the difference between SJO and Liberia airport?

Two airports, two operators, one national entry rule. The gap that matters is the drive at the other end.

SJO is the country's main gateway; Liberia is the Guanacaste one. AERIS Holding Costa Rica manages Juan Santamaria from an address in Alajuela. 11 Coriport runs Liberia inside the VINCI Airports network. 10 Both stamp the same passport under the same national entry directive, 12 so the real difference is geography, weekly schedules and the road on the far side of the terminal doors.

Liberia is a bigger airport than its beach-town reputation suggests. The site covers 243 hectares, and the single 2,750-meter runway handles wide-body aircraft up to the Boeing 747. 10 What it lacks is frequency, and that is where the choice usually gets made.

Which airport has cheaper flights to Costa Rica?

One airline's own fare pages, read the same afternoon, from three US cities into each airport.

Liberia priced lower from every city checked, by $45 to $60. JetBlue's own pages quoted one-way seats to Liberia at $177 from New York-JFK, $154 from Fort Lauderdale and $229 from Boston. 2 The same pages quoted $222, $200 and $289 into San Jose. 3

The length of each bar is the whole argument, and every bar favors Liberia. Boston's bar is the longest of the three, not the shortest, so the fare argues for Liberia from any of these cities. Source: 3, 2

Schedules break the tie more often than fares do. Southwest runs 41 weekly flights, including connections, from Houston Hobby to San Jose, with one nonstop every day of the week, 3 hours 31 minutes over 1,529 miles. 5 The same airline from the same Houston airport flies to Liberia at weekends only, 3 hours 25 minutes over 1,453 miles. 6 Six minutes of flying time separates them. A Tuesday departure separates them completely.

Delta is pushing the other way. From 19 December 2026 it flies JFK to Liberia nonstop on Saturdays through 10 April 2027, its first New York service to Costa Rica since 2016, on top of year-round Liberia flights from Atlanta, Boston, Detroit and Minneapolis-St Paul. 14 JetBlue already serves both airports year-round from JFK and Fort Lauderdale, which makes it the simplest single-airline way to fly in one door and out the other. 13, 10

Does an open-jaw ticket save money?

In through Liberia, out through San Jose, with one rental car and one flat fee.

In through Liberia, out through San Jose, and two travelers from New York keep $40. 2, 3, 4 The arithmetic fits on a napkin. The only cost the plan adds is the rental company's flat fee for collecting a car at one office and leaving it at the other.

Fares are twice JetBlue's quoted lowest one-way fare on each leg: $222 JFK to SJO, $177 JFK to LIR. The homeward leg uses the published JFK to SJO one-way fare as a stand-in, because the San Jose to New York quote was not read. Vamos charges a flat $50 to collect a car at one office and return it at the other, which works out at $25 a head for two. The daily rental rate is identical under both plans, so it cancels out. 3, 2, 4

With less time: With ten days, drop Manuel Antonio, fly into Liberia and out of San Jose, and give the spare night to Monteverde.

The night counts come straight from the itinerary page; the open jaw only changes their order. Two opening nights in the capital move to the end of the trip, which puts the cheapest arrival fare and the shortest airport run on the same fortnight. For what the stops themselves cost, MMT prices what two weeks in Costa Rica costs.

How long is the Liberia to Monteverde transfer?

Shared shuttle prices and times on every leg the airport choice touches, from the operators' own route pages.

Three to four hours, about 115 kilometers, $95 a person on a shared shuttle. 7 The distance is short and the clock is long because the road climbs out of the Guanacaste lowlands into cloud-forest elevation. A private van on the same route costs $310, and no ferry crossing comes into it.

Operators' own published rates on 25 September 2026, one way. Neither Liberia route needs the Gulf of Nicoya ferry. The Liberia to La Fortuna page mentions private service without printing a price. The SJO airport rate is per vehicle for up to four people, the one line here that gets cheaper per head as the group grows. 7, 8, 17

Monteverde costs $10 more than La Fortuna from the same airport, on the same operator. 7, 8 Elevation is the reason the operator gives, and it is a fair one. Budget the extra $10 a seat and treat the climb as part of the arrival.

  • Monteverde and La Fortuna sit about 3 to 3.5 hours from either airport. A named Costa Rica travel writer picks Liberia over San Jose only when one of the two is your first bed. 1
  • San Jose, the Central Valley, Jaco and Manuel Antonio belong to SJO, along with Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Tortuguero, Uvita, Dominical and Drake Bay on the same writer's list. 1
  • Guanacaste's northern beaches belong to Liberia. A traveler heading straight for the coast gets a shorter ground transfer from LIR than from San Jose. 14
  • This two-week route opens in the capital, which is the case that writer's Liberia rule leaves out. Flip the order and Liberia earns the fare gap. 1

The La Fortuna leg runs through the Maleku people's region. The Maleku live in the San Rafael de Guatuso district in three communities they call palenques, El Sol, Margarita and Tonjibe, with 478 residents inside a demarcated territory of about 2,934 hectares and 701 Maleku people across Costa Rica in the census figures a 2022 study cites. 16 Both airports sit about 3 to 3.5 hours away, so the region is no closer to one gateway than the other. 1

One car, two airports, one flat fee

The line that makes the open jaw work on the ground, and the closing time that can undo it.

Vamos charges a flat $50 to collect a car at its San Jose office and leave it at its Liberia office, or the reverse. 4 One rental covers the whole fortnight, and the surcharge comes in under a single shared shuttle seat on three of the five legs priced above. Two separate rentals, two sets of paperwork and two deposits drop out of the plan.

You can also skip the Liberia drive. Two shared seats to La Fortuna cost $170, and Vamos will deliver a car to Arenal/La Fortuna for a flat $95 once you are there. 8, 4 Renting at the LIR counter and driving yourself costs nothing extra, so the $95 buys you a transfer you do not have to drive.

The counters sit close to both terminals. Vamos's main office in Alajuela is 3 to 5 minutes from SJO and meets arrivals with a 15-seat shuttle; its Liberia branch is 5 minutes from LIR with a 9-seater. 4 Costa Rica's rental math has its own traps, and MMT's Costa Rica guides cover the insurance and deposit side.

Can you book award flights to Costa Rica?

Three programs, three answers, and one fixed chart still worth hunting.

Yes, and the points bill tracks the cash fare. Southwest says it plainly on its own redemption page: the number of points a reward flight needs depends on the fare, and the points needed fall when the fares go on sale. 9 That is revenue pricing, and it means the cheap Liberia seat is also the cheap award.

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards prices off the fare, confirmed on Southwest's own page. Watch the fare; book the points. 9
  • Delta SkyMiles retired its fixed award chart in 2015 and prices awards against demand; a points publisher's worked example landed near 1.1 cents a mile. 18
  • American AAdvantage prices its own metal dynamically, while fixed charts survive on some partner awards and off-peak deals. That is where a Costa Rica redemption can still beat cash. 19

So there is no fixed-mileage sweet spot into either airport this season. Quote the points price against the cash fare on the day, in both directions, and run it through MMT's points against cash worksheet. The airline loyalty hub has the program-by-program detail.

Both programs price against demand, so the number to beat is the cash fare on your own dates.

How should you pick your airport?

Five checks, in this order, and the fare comes third. Most readers get an answer by the second one.

  1. Name your first bed

Monteverde, La Fortuna or a Guanacaste beach first: Liberia. The capital, the Central Valley, Jaco or Manuel Antonio first: SJO. 1

  2. Check the day of the week

Southwest's Houston nonstop reaches San Jose any day and Liberia only at weekends, and Delta's new JFK to Liberia flight is Saturdays only from 19 December 2026. A midweek arrival shortens the list fast. 5, 6, 14

  3. Price the open jaw both ways

Quote in-Liberia-out-San-Jose and in-San-Jose-out-Liberia alongside the two round trips. On 25 September 2026 the JFK open jaw beat the SJO round trip by $90 on fares alone. 3, 2

  4. Add the ground legs

One car with the $50 one-way fee, or shuttle seats at $85 to $95 a head out of Liberia. Two travelers pay $239 for the two airport-facing legs on the flipped route: $190 in shared seats from Liberia to Monteverde, and the fixed $49 van from a San Jose hotel to SJO at the end. 7, 17, 4

  5. Book the early flight around the rental desk

Liberia's counter opens at 7 a.m. and shuts at 7 p.m., so an early exit needs a night-before return. San Jose gives you until 10 p.m. and opens at 6 a.m. 4

Fares move every week. Geography holds still. Choose the door your first three nights want, then let the open jaw pay you back on the way home.

Frequently asked questions

Does it matter which airport I enter Costa Rica through?

Both are ports of entry under the same national directive. US passport holders enter visa-free and may stay up to 180 calendar days, and the passport needs one day of validity at entry, as long as the authorized stay ends before the passport expires. 12 For a longer stay, MMT's Costa Rica digital nomad guide covers the income and insurance evidence.

Can I drive myself from Liberia to Monteverde?

Yes, with a rental from Vamos's Liberia counter, 5 minutes from LIR. 4 The road climbs out of the Guanacaste lowlands into cloud-forest elevation, which is why the shared shuttle takes 3 to 4 hours to cover about 115 km, and self-driving will not be much faster. 7

Can I fly into Liberia and out of San Jose on one ticket?

On JetBlue, yes. It serves both airports year-round from JFK and Fort Lauderdale, so the open jaw stays on one airline with no interlining. 13, 10 Two JFK travelers paid $798 in fares that way on 25 September 2026, against $888 round trip through San Jose. 3, 2

What happens if my flight home leaves before the rental desk opens?

Liberia's counter opens at 7 a.m., and Vamos flags that a same-morning return risks a flight leaving at 9:40 a.m. or earlier. Drop the car the night before and take a taxi to the terminal, or book a later flight. 4

When is a private transfer cheaper than shared seats?

From four travelers up on the Liberia to Monteverde run. Shared seats are $95 each, so four come to $380 against $310 for the private van. Three shared seats total $285, still under the private price. 7

Which US cities fly nonstop to each airport?

In 2026 both airports list American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and United. San Jose gets Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, JFK, Houston Hobby, Houston Intercontinental, Newark, Orlando and San Francisco year-round. Liberia gets Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, JFK, Houston Hobby and Houston Intercontinental year-round, with more cities added seasonally. 13, 10

Does Liberia work for a two-week loop that ends in San Jose?

Yes, with the order flipped: Monteverde and La Fortuna first out of Liberia, then the Pacific coast, then the capital and home from SJO. The two-week itinerary runs it the other way around, and the full trip cost prices the stops.

Do I need a car for this route at all?

Shared shuttles cover every leg here at $45 to $95 a person, and a fixed-rate van covers SJO to a downtown San Jose hotel at $49 for up to four. 7, 8, 15, 17 A car earns its keep on the open jaw, where one $50 fee replaces a second rental. 4
