Two weeks, and the numbers that hold still
Arenal fills the window at breakfast in La Fortuna, and the gate into the national park under it costs USD 15 a person. 1 That is the good news about a Costa Rican fortnight. A useful share of it is priced by public rule, in text you can read today, and the rule holds whatever the booking sites are doing this week.
This page prices the lines that published a number on 25 September 2026: every national park gate on the route, the pump price of fuel, the insurance and deposit a rental car carries, and a named resort's nightly rate at the top of the market. Every figure below shows the input it came from.
Four lines refused to publish. Shuttle fares, dorm beds, Monteverde's admission and Tabacón's day pass all live inside booking widgets that want your dates first. Those sit in the confirm box at the end, with the question to ask on your own dates.
How much are Costa Rica's national park fees in 2026?
Every fee below comes from Decreto Ejecutivo 38295-MINAE, the version in force on 25 September 2026, read on Costa Rica's official legal database.
One decree sets the price at every gate in the system. Manuel Antonio is the dearest at USD 16 a visitor. Arenal, Poás, Tortuguero and Corcovado are USD 15 each, and Corcovado's ticket also opens the Isla del Caño Biological Reserve on the same day. Children aged 2 to 12 pay USD 5 anywhere in that list. 1
| Park | Adult (USD) | Child 2-12 (USD) | Adult at the gate (CRC) | Resident adult (CRC) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manuel Antonio | 16 | 5 | 7,266 | 1,600 |
| Volcán Arenal | 15 | 5 | 6,812 | 1,000 |
| Volcán Poás | 15 | 5 | 6,812 | 1,000 |
| Tortuguero, main sector | 15 | 5 | 6,812 | 1,000 |
| Tortuguero, Cerro sector | 2 | not stated | 908 | 500 |
| Corcovado, with Isla del Caño | 15 | 5 | 6,812 | 1,600 |
Colón figures are the dollar fee at the Banco Central de Costa Rica sale rate of CRC 454.15 per US dollar, read on 25 September 2026 and rounded to the colón. Children under 2 enter free across the system. The decree does not set a separate child rate for the Cerro sector. Poás, Arenal and Manuel Antonio are the three gates on the route below; Tortuguero and Corcovado are priced here for routes that include them. 1, 5
Table view: What a park gate costs, across the system
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Manuel Antonio | $16 |
| Volcán Arenal | $15 |
| Volcán Poás | $15 |
| Tortuguero, main sector | $15 |
| Corcovado, with Isla del Caño | $15 |
| Tortuguero, Cerro sector | $2 |
Six gates inside one narrow band. Poás, Arenal and Manuel Antonio are the three gates this route actually visits; park entry stays a rounding error beside the bed and the car. Source: 1
Two rules change a day's plan rather than its price. Corcovado admits visitors only with a certified guide registered with SINAC, checked at the ranger station, which turns one park day into a booked and guided one. 9 SINAC's own portal sells advance entry for Poás, Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero, Chirripó, Irazú and Carara, so the timed slot is worth holding before you land. 10

Where do the two weeks go?
Thirteen nights, four bases, three park gates. This is the shape most two-week plans settle into, and it is the shape the costs below are priced against. Each stop carries the money fact that belongs to it.

With less time: With ten days, hold San José to one night and drop Monteverde. Arenal and Manuel Antonio still come to USD 31 a person at the gates. 1
What does it cost to drive yourself?
Fuel in Costa Rica is one regulated national price, identical at every station. ARESEP sets it, RECOPE posts it, and the table below is the one in force since 10 September 2026. Regular is the grade most rental cars take, at CRC 707 a liter, which works out at about USD 5.89 a US gallon. 3, 5
| Grade | Price (CRC per liter) | Price (USD per liter) | Price (USD per US gallon) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gasolina Super | 726.00 | 1.60 | 6.05 |
| Gasolina Plus 91 (Regular) | 707.00 | 1.56 | 5.89 |
| Diesel 50 | 688.00 | 1.51 | 5.73 |
Colón prices are RECOPE's posted consumer totals, tax and station margin included, published in La Gaceta No. 170 of 9 September 2026. Dollar figures convert at the Banco Central sale rate of CRC 454.15 per US dollar on 25 September 2026, at 3.785411784 liters to the US gallon. 3, 5
That price has a monthly clock on it. ARESEP reviewed fuel in September 2026 and moved Regular down CRC 51 a liter, Super up CRC 22 and diesel up CRC 82, from RECOPE's import costs on shipments between 10 July and 13 August. 4 A month earlier, Regular sat at CRC 758, or about USD 6.32 a gallon. Over a fortnight the price can reset under you.
Two lines sit inside the rental quote before any daily rate. Costa Rican law requires third-party liability cover on every rental. At Adobe that is USD 20,000 of property damage, with the first USD 1,130 on you, and USD 100,000 for injury or death with no deductible. 6
The damage deposit is a separate USD 1,000, or USD 1,130 with tax, held on a credit card for the length of the hire and released at drop-off. The two figures match because the deposit is sized to the deductible. 6
- A cheap quote is usually a quote missing a line. Check that the liability cover and the deposit both appear before you compare two prices. 6
- The deposit wants a credit card, not a debit card. It is a hold on your limit for the whole hire, so it shapes what else you can charge. 6
- Price fuel for the grade, in gallons, if that is how you think. Regular at USD 5.89 a gallon reads very differently from CRC 707. 3, 5
- Pay attention in month two. A rental that crosses an ARESEP reset ends on a different pump price from the one it started on. 4
What does a night cost at the top of the market?
Tulemar Resort in Manuel Antonio publishes its 2026 rates, which makes it the honest anchor for the villa tier. A Standard Room for two starts at USD 345 a night from 1 May to 15 November, and reaches USD 585 in the Easter season, or USD 570 over Christmas and New Year. Casa de las Flores, sleeping four, starts at USD 750. 2
Then the add-on lands. Every rate carries 13% VAT and a 4.5% resort fee, 17.5% in total, and half the stay is due at booking as a non-refundable deposit. 2 The bill, rather than the rate card, is the number worth planning around.
| Room | Listed rate (USD per night) | With 17.5% tax and fee (USD) | 4 nights on this route (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Room, 1 May to 15 November | 345 | 405.38 | 1,621.50 |
| Standard Room, Easter season (20 Mar to 3 Apr) | 585 | 687.38 | 2,749.50 |
| Standard Room, Christmas and New Year (20 Dec to 2 Jan) | 570 | 669.75 | 2,679.00 |
| Casa de las Flores, 1 May to 15 November | 750 | 881.25 | 3,525.00 |
Rates read from Tulemar's own rates page on 25 September 2026. The Standard Room sleeps two and takes up to four; Casa de las Flores sleeps four and takes five. Tax and fee are 13% VAT plus a 4.5% Tulemar fee, applied together as 17.5%. The route below spends four nights in Manuel Antonio; the last column prices that stay at each rate, not the full 13-night trip. 2
Table view: The rate you see, then the bill you pay
| Item | Listed rate (USD) | With 13% VAT and 4.5% fee (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Room, May to November | $345 | $405.38 |
| Standard Room, Easter season | $585 | $687.38 |
| Standard Room, Christmas and New Year | $570 | $669.75 |
| Casa de las Flores, May to November | $750 | $881.25 |
The gap is 17.5% on every line. Over the four nights this route spends in a Standard Room it comes to USD 241.50 of tax and fee sitting on top of USD 1,380 of room. Source: 2
Split four ways, the same villa reads differently. Casa de las Flores at USD 881.25 a night works out at USD 220.31 per person per night for four adults, against USD 202.69 each for a couple in the Standard Room. Group size moves this line harder than season does.

The middle of the lodging market quotes only against your dates. Selina's Manuel Antonio page wants dates before it shows a dorm rate, and the rate pages at two named hotels near Arenal and Monteverde returned an empty page and a 404. Those quotes have to come from you, on your dates.
Is Costa Rica expensive for a couple?
It depends entirely on which lines charge per head. Park gates, guides and shuttle seats double for a second person. The car, the fuel and the villa hold still. That split is the whole answer, and it is why a couple often lands closer to one traveller's cost than to two.
| Line | One adult (USD) | Two adults (USD) | How it scales |
|---|---|---|---|
| Park entry: Poás, Arenal, Manuel Antonio | 46 | 92 | Per person |
| Tulemar Standard Room, 4 nights with tax | 1,621.50 | 1,621.50 | Per room, sleeps two |
| Rental damage deposit, held not spent | 1,130 | 1,130 | Per car |
| Fuel, at CRC 707 a liter | your mileage | your mileage | Per car |
| Published lines, this route | 1,667.50 | 1,713.50 | Gates plus four nights at Tulemar |
Park and room figures are exact arithmetic on the fees and rates cited above. The deposit is Adobe's USD 1,000 plus tax, refundable at drop-off. Fuel is left open because distance is yours to set. The totals row adds gates and four nights at Tulemar; it excludes the nine nights this route spends away from Manuel Antonio, fuel, shuttles, food and the four quotes in the confirm box. 1, 2, 6, 3
A family changes the picture again. Two adults and two children aged 2 to 12 pay USD 122 for the same three gates, since each child costs USD 5 a park. 1 MMT's solo and couple adventure budget comparison runs this split across other trip types.
Costa Rica budget per day: the lines you quote yourself
Four numbers decide whether a Costa Rican fortnight is a USD 2,000 trip or a USD 12,000 one, and all four hide behind a date picker. An afternoon gets you all of them, in writing, with your own dates on them.
Fix your dates and your party
Every booking screen on this list asks for both before it shows a price. Have them settled first, including ages for the children, since the USD 5 park rate runs from 2 to 12. 1
Price the shuttle legs
Interbus and its competitors sell San José to La Fortuna, La Fortuna to Monteverde and Monteverde to Manuel Antonio as separate seats, quoted per person once you enter dates. Three quotes cover the whole route.
Price one bed a night at your tier
Take one dorm, one mid-range hotel and one villa night on your real dates, then multiply by 13. The villa end is anchored above at USD 405.38 a night with tax. 2
One more input belongs on the list. Costa Rica's immigration authority publishes the tourist stay length and the onward-ticket rule, and both of its pages were unreachable for this research, along with the US State Department's country page. Check them directly before you book flights, and see MMT's Costa Rica digital nomad stay requirements for the longer-stay route.
Paying in colones, and the rate that sits behind it
On 25 September 2026 the Banco Central de Costa Rica quoted CRC 450.87 to buy a US dollar and CRC 454.15 to sell one. 5 That sale rate is the one doing the work in this page: it converts the park fees at the gate, the pump price into gallons, and the traffic fine into something a dollar budget can feel.
The spread between those two numbers, about CRC 3.28, is the cleanest picture of what changing money costs before any bank adds its own margin. Compare that against what your card charges with MMT's ATM fee comparison, and test the whole trip against a 10% move using the travel currency risk worksheet.
The communities hosting on this route, and one number to ask for
The Arenal leg runs through the north, where the Maleku of Guatuso hold their territory and run their own affairs. Three palenques, Tonjibe, Margarita and El Sol, are represented by the Association for the Development of the Indigenous Maleku Territory. A 2013 account by Cultural Survival counted around 600 Maleku there; treat that figure as dated and ask the community's own representatives for the current one. 11
Across the country on the Caribbean side, in Talamanca, Bribri and Cabécar communities run a visitor economy they built themselves - worth knowing if the route extends, and worth borrowing from wherever you book. The Talamanca Association of Ecotourism and Conservation, founded in 1990 by Talamanca residents including Bribri members, returns 70% of every tour price directly to the local guides and the projects visited. 12
That 70% is the most useful number on this page for anyone booking a cultural tour anywhere in the country. Ask an operator what share reaches the guides and the community, and ask it before you compare two prices. Where the answer is published, as ATEC publishes it, the comparison gets easy. MMT's Costa Rica guides and field notes collect the rest of the planning.
Frequently asked questions
Do infants need a ticket for Costa Rica's national parks?
No. Children under 2 enter free at every park in the system; the USD 5 non-resident child rate starts at age 2 and runs through 12. 1
Can I pay park entry in colones?
Yes, and you can also pay in dollars or by card. The gate converts at the Banco Central sale rate on the day of purchase, so the colón figure moves while the dollar sticker does not. Carry small colón notes for the sectors that take cash only. 1, 5
Which parks need a guide or an advance ticket?
Corcovado admits visitors only with a certified guide registered with SINAC, and rangers check for one at the station. 9 SINAC's own booking portal lists Poás, Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero, Chirripó, Irazú, Carara and Isla San Lucas for advance entry. 10
Is diesel cheaper than petrol in Costa Rica?
Yes, slightly. Diesel has cost CRC 688 a liter since 10 September 2026, against CRC 707 for Regular and CRC 726 for Super. In dollars that is about USD 5.73 a US gallon for diesel and USD 5.89 for Regular. Every station in the country charges the same regulated price. 3, 5
Will fuel cost the same for my whole trip?
It can change mid-trip. ARESEP reviews fuel prices monthly and publishes the change in La Gaceta, with the new price effective the next day. September 2026 moved Regular down CRC 51 a liter, Super up CRC 22 and diesel up CRC 82. 4
What deposit does a Costa Rican rental car need?
Adobe Rent a Car holds USD 1,000, or USD 1,130 with tax, on a credit card for the length of the hire. Mandatory third-party liability cover is already inside the quote, at USD 20,000 for property damage with a USD 1,130 deductible and USD 100,000 for injury or death. 6
Is a villa cheaper than hotel rooms for four people?
Run the per-person arithmetic before deciding. Tulemar's Casa de las Flores at USD 750 a night bills at USD 881.25 with the 17.5% tax and fee, which is USD 220.31 per person per night for four. Half the total falls due at booking as a non-refundable deposit. 2
What is free on the second Wednesday of the month?
Residents of Costa Rica enter SINAC parks free on the second Wednesday of every month, under the same decree that sets the visitor fees. Visitors pay the standard USD 15 or USD 16 that day like any other. 1
