Monteverde and La Fortuna: six nights, cloud forest to volcano

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Three nights in the cloud at 1,400 meters, three under Arenal, and what every gate between them charges in 2026.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Three nights in each town covers both. Monteverde gives you reserves at about 1,400 m, where the mean temperature is 18C. La Fortuna gives you the volcano, the hot rivers and the warm air. 1
  • The crossing is the cheap part. A shared jeep-boat-jeep over Lake Arenal runs $33 at 8 a.m. or $40 at 2 p.m. a head, about 3.5 to 4 hours door to door. 2
  • Driving between them got 100 minutes faster in April 2026. A new 112-meter bridge put Route 936 through El Castillo at about 1 hour 50 minutes, against about 3.5 hours the old way round the lake. 3
  • Arenal Volcano National Park costs $15 a non-resident adult and $5 a child aged 2 to 12, charged in colones at the central bank's sale rate on the day you pay. 4, 5
  • Hot springs are the line that moves most. The Tabacón river at El Choyín is free. Titoku sells a day pass at about $33. The Springs Resort sells two consecutive days at $124.30 to $141.25, which works out at about $62 to $71 a day. 6

Cloud forest, then volcano

At 1,400 meters the air sits around 18C and the cloud stays in the trees. Mist alone hands the Monteverde forest up to 40% of the water it captures, on days when no rain falls. Humidity there runs between 74% and 97%. 1, 7

Two hours away the ground drops, the air warms and Arenal stands over La Fortuna. Rivers come out of the rock hot enough to sit in. Between them these two towns take more than 700,000 visitors a year. 3

Monteverde vs La Fortuna: what is each town for?

One town is a forest on a ridge. The other is a volcano with hot water under it. They want different clothes and different money.

Monteverde is a forest town and La Fortuna is a volcano town. Santa Elena is the settlement that services Monteverde's reserves and most of its hotels, high on the Cordillera de Tilarán. 8, 9 La Fortuna sits low and warm at the foot of Arenal.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve stands on the Continental Divide. Rain landing on one side runs to the Pacific; on the other it runs to the Caribbean. The preserve's own record counts more than 400 bird species, over 3,000 plants including more than 450 orchids and 800 epiphytes, and all six of Costa Rica's wildcat species. 7

The rain dates are the weather institute's figures for the whole northern region. Monteverde's cloud is a site feature of the ridge, so a dry month down the hill still means mist up it.

How many days in Monteverde and La Fortuna?

Three nights each, six in total. Three in Monteverde buys two full trail days plus a night walk, which the preserve runs from 6 p.m. on its own clock. 10 Three in La Fortuna covers the national park, one hot-springs afternoon and one slow morning, with the crossing day sitting between the two halves.

Cloud forest first puts the hardest driving at the fresh end of the trip. Route 606 up to Santa Elena was paved in 2019, and a San José rental company recommends a 4WD on it from May to November. 8

How do you get between Monteverde and La Fortuna?

A boat across Lake Arenal, or a mountain road that got much faster in April 2026.

Two good answers, and they cost very different things. The jeep-boat-jeep is the classic: a minibus down to Lake Arenal, a boat across it, a second minibus up the far side. Shared, it runs $33 at 8 a.m. or $40 at 2 p.m. a head, about 3.5 to 4 hours. Private, it runs $260 for up to five people and about $28 for each extra rider. 2

Driving is now the fast option. A 112-meter bridge over the Caño Negro river went into service on 24 April 2026, letting Route 936 through El Castillo and Río Chiquito carry traffic that used to go the long way by Route 142. The drive is about 1 hour 50 minutes against about 3.5 hours before: 100 minutes back in your day. 3

  1. Book the day before, at the latest

The operator takes shared and private bookings on its own site and refunds in full up to 24 hours out. Take the 8 a.m. if you want the afternoon at the other end. 2

  2. Keep the day bag with you

The middle leg crosses open water and the minibuses handle the luggage. Your rain shell and your documents stay on your lap.

  3. Eat before the boat

Door to door the shared crossing runs 3.5 to 4 hours with one lake leg in the middle. 2

  4. Driving instead? Fuel up first

Route 936 through El Castillo and Río Chiquito is a mountain road with the new bridge at its middle. Fuel is a government-set price, the same at every station in the country: CRC 707 a liter for Plus 91. 3, 14

What do Monteverde's reserves and bridges cost?

Three separate forests take tickets here, run by three different bodies. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve belongs to the Tropical Science Center. The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is held by the board of the local technical high school, the Colegio Técnico Profesional de Santa Elena, under a use permit granted in 1991. The hanging-bridge parks are private operators with their own gates. 7, 9, 15

Two of the three print a price. Santa Elena charges CRC 10,000 for an adult on its self-guided trails and CRC 20,000 for a 2.5-hour guided walk, rates it holds through 2026. Selvatura asks $66.60 an adult for the bridges and the butterfly garden. The Monteverde preserve routes every trail to a booking page, so its number arrives at checkout. 9, 15, 10

Santa Elena prices in colones; CRC 10,000 is about $22 and CRC 20,000 about $44 at the central bank's sale rate of CRC 455.60 on 28 September 2026. Selvatura's rate adds 13% tax and fees, wants two people and 48 hours' notice, and the park states it holds until 15 December 2026. 5, 15

  • The short circuit is the Essence Trail, 1.4 km in about an hour, rated easy. Good for a first afternoon or a wet one. 10
  • Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve covers 310 hectares on the Caribbean side of the divide at about 1,600 m. Its ecotourism income goes back into the high school that runs it and into the schools around it. 9
  • Selvatura Park and the other bridge circuits hang walkways at canopy height near the reserves. Selvatura's bridges come paired with its butterfly garden, 2.5 to 3 hours for $66.60 an adult before tax. 15
  • Where you sleep changes the morning. What to pay for here is forest and town you can reach on foot: Monteverde Lodge keeps 31 rooms and a private cloud forest reserve, walking distance from downtown Monteverde. 16

Book the earliest slot you can stand. Cloud forest is a morning product: the preserve's guided walk shuts at 1 p.m., and the night walk is a separate half-hour entry window at 6 p.m. Two reserves in one day is possible and rarely worth it. 10

What La Fortuna costs: springs, park and a free river

Arenal Volcano National Park charges a non-resident adult $15 and a child aged 2 to 12 $5. Residents pay CRC 1,000. The decree sets $15 and names no tax, so confirm any tax at the gate. The gate converts the dollar figure at the Banco Central de Costa Rica's sale rate on the day of purchase: at CRC 455.60, that $15 is CRC 6,834. 4, 5, 11

The park's main visitor center runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and one hotel, Arenal Observatory Lodge, sits inside the park boundary closest to the volcano. 11 Everything else in town is a short drive from the gate.

The hot springs are where a La Fortuna budget swings most. The Tabacón river at El Choyín runs free where it crosses public ground, warmed by the same volcanic source that feeds the resort pools. Titoku sells a day pass at about $33, or about $52 with a meal. The Springs Resort sells a pass good for two consecutive days at $124.30 to $141.25, about $62 to $71 a day. 6

When to go, and what the rain does up there

Monteverde's cloud has no season; La Fortuna's rain has dates. The preserve records an average range of 14C to 22C and up to 3,000 mm of water a year, up to 40% of it arriving as mist on days with no rain at all. That water is the reason the forest looks the way it does. 7

Down the hill, Costa Rica's national weather institute dates the northern region's rains from 11 to 13 May through 3 to 7 December, the latest start and the latest finish of the five regions it dates. 12 Those are regional figures for the northern zone, and La Fortuna's own patch is mapped as a separate subregion, so read a local forecast for your week.

The reserves publish their own climate figures; the rain dates are the institute's for the whole northern region.

Pack for both towns at once: a rain shell and one warm layer for 14C in the cloud, light clothes for the lowland heat, and shoes you can soak. MMT's one-bag tropics packing list is built for this exact split.

The Maleku live north of La Fortuna

The Maleku people hold a demarcated territory in the San Rafael de Guatuso district, north of La Fortuna, and they govern it themselves. The land was demarcated by decree in 1976 and protected under the Indigenous Law of 1977. After a boundary cut made against that law, Maleku claimants took the case to Costa Rica's Supreme Court and won: the 1999 ruling restored the full 2,993.5 hectares. 18

Maleku life today runs through three communities called palenques, El Sol, Margarita and Tonjibe, and through the territory's own governing body, the Asociación de Desarrollo Integral. The 2013 national census counted 478 Maleku inside the territory and 701 across the country. That count is more than a decade old and the Nation's own records are current; the Asociación de Desarrollo Integral is the source to ask. 18

If your route goes that way, look for the community's own arrangements first. Bribri and Cabécar territories sit well away from these two towns, in Talamanca on the Caribbean side, where a community association founded in 1990 books tours and returns 70% of every tour price to the local guides and projects visited. 19

Colones, dollars and what you hand over at the gate

Costa Rica runs on colones and quotes visitors in dollars. On 28 September 2026 the Banco Central de Costa Rica's reference rate was CRC 450.38 to buy a dollar and CRC 455.60 to sell one. 5 The Federal Reserve's weekly H.10 release carries 23 currencies and the colón sits outside them, so the country's own central bank is the rate to plan with. 20

Park fees are set in dollars and charged in colones at the sale rate on the day you buy, so their colón figure moves. The Santa Elena reserve sets its price in colones, so its dollar figure moves instead. Fuel is a government-set price, identical at every station in the country. 4, 9, 14

Where a park fee is set in dollars, the decree says the colón amount at the gate is that dollar figure at the central bank's sale rate on the day you buy. 4 So the sticker holds and the colón total moves under it. Two adults through Arenal Volcano National Park plus two shared morning crossings comes to $96 before tax for the middle of this trip. 4, 2

Fuel is a government-set price, identical at every station in the country: CRC 707 a liter for Plus 91, the grade most rental cars take, effective 10 September 2026. At CRC 455.60 that is about $1.55. Prices are reviewed monthly, so the figure at pickup can differ from the one at drop-off. 14, 5

US passport holders enter without a visa and may stay up to 180 calendar days under the directive in force since 17 November 2025, with a passport valid for at least one day at entry; the stay granted stops at the passport's own expiry. 21 For a longer stay, read the Costa Rica digital nomad requirements. More of the country sits in the Costa Rica guide hub.

Frequently asked questions

Monteverde or La Fortuna first?

Cloud forest first works for most trips. The climb to Santa Elena is the harder drive of the two, 133 km and 3.5 to 4 hours from San José on Route 27, Highway 1 and Route 606, and taking it early leaves the warm lowland town for the end. The crossing costs the same in both directions. 8, 2

Is three nights in Monteverde too many?

Three nights buys two full trail days and one night walk, which starts at 6 p.m. and is a separate entry from the daytime circuits. Two nights covers one reserve and one bridge walk in a hurry. Three lets you take the 7:30 a.m. opening twice. 10

Should I rent a car for these two towns?

The new bridge makes a strong case: Route 936 covers the gap in about 1 hour 50 minutes against 3.5 hours the old way, and fuel is a fixed CRC 707 a liter for Plus 91. Against that, Route 606 up to Santa Elena wants a 4WD from May to November, and a shared transfer is $33 a head. 3, 14, 8, 2

How much is Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve entry?

The preserve publishes no price as text: every trail routes to a booking page, so today's figure appears at checkout. Plan around the hours instead. The Cloud Forest Walk runs 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the guided Natural History Walk to 1 p.m., and the Night Walk takes entries from 6 p.m. The Santa Elena reserve does print a price: CRC 10,000 for an adult on its self-guided trails, about $22. 10, 9, 5

Do I pay in dollars or colones?

Carry colones for small buys and for the men in vests who charge to park at the free river, a strip where parking is illegal and nobody is guarding the car; the park gate takes its dollar fee in colones at the day's rate, CRC 455.60 on 28 September 2026. Santa Elena's reserve prices in colones outright, at CRC 10,000 an adult. 4, 5, 9, 6

Are the free hot springs worth it over Tabacón?

They are the same river. El Choyín is the Tabacón river where it crosses public ground, warm from the volcano, with no gate and no towels. A paid pass buys built pools, loungers and hours to 10 p.m. Titoku's day pass is about $33; The Springs Resort works out at about $62 to $71 a day on its two-day pass. 6, 17

Which month should I pick for these six nights?

February, if rain and crowds are what you are picking on. The northern region's rains run 11 to 13 May through 3 to 7 December, so December to April is the drier half down the hill. That same window is high season, with Tabacón passes worth booking well ahead at Christmas, New Year and Easter week. February sits in the dry months and outside all three. Up on the ridge the cloud keeps no calendar. 12, 6, 7

How long can a US visitor stay?

Up to 180 calendar days without a visa under the directive in force since 17 November 2025, with a passport valid for at least one day at entry. The stay granted stops at the passport's expiry date. Confirm with the airline before you fly. 21
