Two weeks in the tropics, one bag, and daily rain
Two weeks in the tropics is a rain problem and a weight problem. Laundry is how you solve both. On 25 September 2026, Costa Rica's weather service forecast rain across the Pacific slope, the Central Valley, the north-central zone and the western Caribbean. 10 Pack for damp like that and the bag fills fast. Pack for AirAsia's 7 kg cabin allowance and it empties again. 2
Mist sits in the Monteverde cloud forest through the afternoon. Tayrona's entry rules stop disposable bottles, bags, cups, straws and cutlery before you reach the sand. 6 Every line on the list below answers one of those conditions, and each one has a source behind it.
The same list carries four trips: Costa Rica, Mexico's Yucatán, Colombia's three climates and Bali. What changes between them is the cabin rule on the smallest aircraft and the rules at each park entrance. Those two things set the weight ceiling, and the ceiling sets the list. 3, 2
How much can one bag actually weigh?
Four carriers, read from their own baggage pages on 25 September 2026, against the empty weight of the bag itself.
The empty bag goes on the scale first. Aer's Travel Pack 4 35L weighs 3.90 lb, which converts exactly to 1.769 kg, and measures 54.5 x 34 x 23 cm at 35 L for $259. 1 Every gram of that comes out of the airline's number before a single shirt goes in.
| Item | Size (cm) | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Aer Travel Pack 4 35L | 54.5 x 34 x 23 | 3.90 lb (1.769 kg) empty |
| Volaris carry-on maximum | 55 x 40 x 25 | 10 kg |
| AirAsia cabin bag maximum | 56 x 36 x 23 | 7 kg with the under-seat item |
| Wingo cabin bag maximum | size not published | 12 kg |
The bag clears both published size limits, with half a centimetre to spare on Volaris's length and nothing to spare on AirAsia's depth. Wingo prints the 12 kg weight and leaves the dimensions off its own page; third-party sites quote a size Wingo itself has yet to publish, so confirm it at the counter. Volaris also caps carry-on plus personal item at 20 kg combined, and its Zero and Basic fares carry the personal item alone.
Weight is where these four trips separate. Wingo's Go Standard fare and above allow 12 kg in the cabin. 12 Volaris allows 10 kg. 11 AirAsia allows 7 kg for the backpack and the under-seat item together, or 14 kg with a paid upgrade. 2 Sansa, which flies Costa Rica's domestic routes on small aircraft, allows 4.5 kg free for the entire cabin allowance. 3
| Carrier and leg | Cabin allowance (kg) | Empty bag (kg) | Left for contents (kg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wingo, Colombia, Go Standard and above | 12.000 | 1.769 | 10.231 |
| Volaris, Mexico, carry-on | 10.000 | 1.769 | 8.231 |
| AirAsia, Bali, standard fare | 7.000 | 1.769 | 5.231 |
| Sansa, Costa Rica domestic, before the excess fee | 4.500 | 1.769 | 2.731 |
| Sansa, before the bag goes in the hold | 6.800 | 1.769 | 5.031 |
Aer prints the Travel Pack 4 35L at 3.90 lb, which is 1.769 kg by exact conversion, and every figure in the last column is the allowance minus that weight. Sansa charges an excess fee between 4.5 and 6.8 kg. AirAsia's 7 kg covers both cabin items together, so a camera bag comes out of the same number.
Table view: What each cabin allowance leaves inside the bag
| Item | Value (kg) |
|---|---|
| Wingo, Go Standard and above | 10.23 kg |
| Volaris, carry-on | 8.23 kg |
| AirAsia, standard fare | 5.23 kg |
| Sansa, before the hold | 5.03 kg |
| Sansa, free allowance | 2.73 kg |
The gap between the best leg and the worst is 7.5 kg of contents. One Sansa hop to Tortuguero or Drake Bay sets the ceiling for the whole trip, and the same packed bag that boards in Bogotá pays an excess fee at San José's domestic terminal. Source: 11, 12, 2, 3, 1
What goes in the bag for two humid weeks?
Nine of these ten items come from a government page or a manufacturer's spec sheet. The tenth is a kitchen scale, because the only weight anyone publishes here is the bag's own 3.90 lb. 1 Weigh your own kit against the ceiling in the table above, then cut from the heaviest end.
Four things decide a bag for these routes: it has to clear the published cabin dimensions on the budget carriers that fly them, weigh as little as possible empty because that weight is subtracted from your allowance, open flat, and be repairable. The Travel Pack 4 35L clears the first two on Aer's and the carriers' own published figures. 1, 11, 2
- The bag: Aer Travel Pack 4 35L, 3.90 lb empty, 54.5 x 34 x 23 cm, $259, with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. 1, 5
- Long sleeves, long pants and a hat, the first line of CDC's bite prevention on all four countries' destination pages. 8
- Permethrin-treated clothing and gear, boots, pants, socks and a tent included, applied to fabric only. 8
- Repellent with 20% DEET or more, or another active ingredient on the EPA's list. 8
- A bed net, for any night sleeping exposed to the outdoors. 8
- A refillable bottle and a food container, because two of these four countries stop single-use plastic at the park entrance. 6, 7
- Biodegradable or mineral sunscreen, recommended by Colombia's park agency and asked for by Quintana Roo's reef operators. 13, 14
- A rain shell, in every month on Costa Rica's Caribbean side, where IMN records no defined dry season. 15
- Quick-dry layers in place of cotton, for a wet season BMKG expects later than normal across Bali. 16
- A kitchen scale at home, to weigh the packed bag against the tightest leg before the airport does it for you.
Weight and money trade against each other in both directions. Lighter gear costs more per gram, and MMT's cost of weight savings worksheet does that arithmetic for hiking kit. The same method works on a tropical list: price the gram before you buy the titanium version of anything.
Does the rainy season change the packing list?
The rainy season is a set of regional dates, and one coast has no dry season at all. Costa Rica's Instituto Meteorológico Nacional put the 2026 start between 27 April and 13 May depending on the region, and records the Caribbean slope with no defined dry season. 15 Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero get the rain shell in every month.
| Leg | What the forecast says | What goes in |
|---|---|---|
| Costa Rica, Pacific slope and Central Valley | 2026 rainy season began between 27 April and 13 May by region | Rain shell, dry bag for anything with a battery |
| Costa Rica, Caribbean side | No defined dry season in any month | Rain shell in every month of the year |
| Costa Rica, on the research date | Rain forecast on the Pacific slope, Central Valley, north-central zone and west Caribbean | Quick-dry layers that hang overnight |
| Bali and Nusa Tenggara | 2026/2027 wet season arriving later than normal, with a later peak | Rain shell, quick-dry layers |
| Colombia, three climate regions | Caribbean driest, Andean rainfall shifting most with elevation, Amazon and Pacific wettest | One warm layer on top of the tropical kit |
Seasonal dates: IMN meteorologist Karina Hernández Espinoza, quoted on the record by La Nación. Colombia's regional ranking: a published summary of IDEAM's quarterly climatology.
Bali runs on a different calendar. Indonesia's BMKG expects the 2026/2027 wet season to arrive later than normal across Sumatra, Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara, with a later peak than its earlier forecast. 16 That shifts the odds and leaves the packing answer intact: quick-dry layers and a shell, plus a dry bag for anything with a battery.

Colombia asks for one extra layer. Its three climate regions run from the dry Caribbean coast, through the Andes where rainfall shifts most with elevation, to the consistently wet Amazon and Pacific lowlands. 17 A tropical list plus one warm layer covers Santa Marta and a Bogotá evening out of the same bag.
What sunscreen do the reef parks want?
Colombia's park agency asks for biodegradable sunscreen, and sells it inside the parks. Its ecotourism page recommends it to keep standard sunscreen chemicals out of the water, and lists it for sale at Tayrona, PNN Sierra de La Macarena, the Bogotá park store and the Cartagena dock. 13 Buying it on arrival saves cabin weight.
Quintana Roo works the same way in practice. Dive operators around Cozumel, Puerto Morelos and Cancún consistently report that the marine parks require biodegradable sunscreen free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, with CONANP rangers enforcing it at the boat. 14 Carry the mineral tube either way; the operators who run these trips report that rangers check at the boat.
Two of these four countries stop single-use plastic at the park entrance. Tayrona's entry rules bar disposable bags, styrofoam, bottles, cups, cutlery, straws and stirrers, along with pets, speakers and unpermitted drones. 6 Costa Rica's SINAC directive SINAC-DE-944-2020 has banned the same category inside national parks, biological reserves and national monuments since 25 February 2021. 7

Tayrona also closes for two weeks every autumn. Parques Nacionales lists the park shut from 19 October to 2 November for época de Nabbatashi, the annual cleansing period observed by the Indigenous authorities of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, whose decision sets the dates. 6 Plan the Colombia leg around those dates, and pack the warm layer if the trip turns inland instead.
How do you keep the mosquitoes off?
The CDC prints the same five-part answer for Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia and Indonesia, word for word. Cover skin with long sleeves, pants and a hat. Use 20% DEET or another repellent on the EPA's list. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin. Sleep in screened or air-conditioned rooms, and add a bed net for any night sleeping exposed to the outdoors. 8
Two of these legs carry a live notice. Northwest Costa Rica, which takes in Guanacaste, has a chikungunya outbreak notice dated 30 July 2026. 8 Travelers returning from Bali have brought Zika cases home, in a notice dated 7 August 2026. 9 Dengue sits behind both, a year-round risk with outbreaks every two to five years, dated 3 September 2026. 18
| Country | Current notice | Date on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Costa Rica | Chikungunya outbreak in the northwest of the country | 30 July 2026 |
| Indonesia, including Bali | Zika in travelers returning from Bali | 7 August 2026 |
| Colombia | Global dengue: year-round risk, outbreaks every 2 to 5 years | 3 September 2026 |
| Mexico and Costa Rica | Malaria pills recommended for named states and provinces only | Updated 23 April 2025 |
CDC lists chemoprophylaxis for Alajuela and Limón provinces in Costa Rica, and for Campeche, Chiapas and the southern part of Chihuahua in Mexico. Quintana Roo, which holds Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, sits outside that list. The prescription itself is a conversation with a travel clinic.
Malaria pills are a narrower question than the internet suggests. Two provinces in Costa Rica and three states in Mexico carry the CDC's chemoprophylaxis recommendation. 8, 19 Everywhere else on these four trips, bite prevention carries the load, which puts the repellent and the treated shirt ahead of any pharmacy line on the packing list.
What changes for Costa Rica, the Yucatán, Colombia and Bali?
One list, four adjustments, and the adjustment is usually the aircraft. A Costa Rica trip with a Tortuguero hop runs into Sansa's 4.5 kg. 3 A Bali trip on AirAsia runs into 7 kg, or 14 kg with the paid upgrade. 2 Colombia's Wingo is the most generous at 12 kg from the Go Standard fare up. 12
| Trip | Tightest cabin rule | What the rule or the park adds |
|---|---|---|
| Costa Rica, two weeks with a domestic hop | Sansa, 4.5 kg free for the whole cabin allowance | Refillable bottle and food container for the parks, plus a scale at home |
| Yucatán, two weeks | Volaris, 10 kg carry-on and 20 kg combined | Mineral sunscreen for the reef parks |
| Colombia, three climates in one trip | Wingo, 12 kg from Go Standard up | Biodegradable sunscreen, sold at the Tayrona park store, and one warm layer |
| Bali, two weeks or longer | AirAsia, 7 kg for the backpack and under-seat item together | Quick-dry layers, and the paid upgrade to 14 kg if the list grows |
Wingo's Go Basic fare carries a personal item alone, and Volaris sells Zero and Basic fares the same way, so the cabin rule depends on the fare as much as the carrier.
Divers change the arithmetic entirely. A regulator, fins and a wetsuit outweigh two weeks of clothes, and any gear set heavier than 5.231 kg has to be checked on a standard AirAsia fare. 2, 1 MMT's guide to flying with your own dive gear weighs the baggage bill against renting at the shop, and the Amed shore-diving budget prices the other side of that decision.
Two weeks of clothes is the line most lists get wrong. Four days of clothes plus a laundry plan weighs less and dries faster in humidity. A monthly stay with a washing machine changes the list more than any packing cube, and MMT prices that choice against a run of short bookings.
Pack it in this order
The order matters, because the last two steps are the ones that cut weight. Everything here comes from a page you can open yourself, dated 25 September 2026. 1, 3, 2
Weigh the empty bag
Aer prints 3.90 lb for the Travel Pack 4 35L, which is 1.769 kg. 1 Put it on the scale anyway, with the hip belt and any pouches you plan to keep on it.
Treat the clothes before they go in
CDC asks for permethrin on clothing and gear, never on skin, alongside 20% or stronger DEET for exposed arms and legs. 8
Then weigh it once more with the bottle full. That is the bag that has to clear 4.5 kg at the Sansa counter in San José, and 7 kg at the AirAsia counter in Denpasar. 3, 2
Frequently asked questions
Which Aer bag should I buy in 2026?
The Travel Pack 4 35L, at 3.90 lb, 54.5 x 34 x 23 cm and $259. Aer discontinued the Travel Pack 3 and replaced it with the 4. 4, 1 A 28 L size sits at the same price point in the size selector on the same page. 1
Does Aer's lifetime warranty cover a torn bag?
It covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product, for buyers inside and outside the United States with proof of purchase. 5 Normal wear, UV fade, rips, punctures, abrasion and accidental damage sit outside it. 5
Will a 35 L backpack fit as a carry-on in Latin America and Asia?
On the two carriers that publish a size, yes. Volaris allows 55 x 40 x 25 cm, AirAsia allows 56 x 36 x 23 cm, and the Travel Pack 4 35L measures 54.5 x 34 x 23 cm. 11, 2, 1 Weight decides it more often than size: AirAsia's 7 kg covers the backpack and the under-seat item together. 2
What does a carry-on packing list for Costa Rica have to weigh?
Plan on 2.731 kg of contents if a Sansa domestic flight is in the plan. Sansa allows 4.5 kg free for the whole cabin allowance, and the empty Aer bag takes 1.769 kg of it. 3, 1 Skip the domestic hop and a 10 kg cabin allowance, the number Volaris publishes, would leave 8.231 kg instead. 11, 1
What do you pack for Bali in a backpack?
The CDC bite-prevention kit, quick-dry layers, a rain shell and mineral sunscreen, inside 5.231 kg of contents on a standard AirAsia fare. 2, 1 CDC has a Zika notice for travelers returning from Bali dated 7 August 2026, so the repellent and the treated shirt go in first. 9 BMKG expects the wet season later than normal, which keeps the shell in the bag through months that look dry on paper. 16
Is a rain shell worth the space in the dry season?
On Costa Rica's Caribbean side, yes in every month, because IMN records no defined dry season there. 15 On the Pacific side the 2026 rains started between 27 April and 13 May by region, and the bulletin on 25 September 2026 forecast rain across four zones at once. 15, 10 The shell doubles as a wind layer on a Bogotá evening.
What gets stopped at a park entrance?
Single-use plastic. Tayrona's rangers check bags at the gate, so a disposable bottle, cup or set of cutlery gets turned away there, not confiscated once you're inside. 6 Costa Rica's national parks, biological reserves and national monuments have barred the same category since 25 February 2021. 7 Tayrona's own park store sells the biodegradable sunscreen these parks ask for, so a forgotten tube is not a lost cause. 13
Do I need malaria pills for the Yucatán?
Not for Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum. Those cities sit in Quintana Roo, outside the three Mexican states where CDC recommends pills, so bite prevention carries the load there instead: DEET, permethrin on the clothes and a bed net for any night spent exposed. 19, 8 Costa Rica's own list runs narrower still, to Alajuela and Limón provinces, and either way the prescribing decision belongs to a travel clinic. 8
