This page prices the gear decision: the bag fees your equipment adds and the rental bill it removes. Airfare, dives, lodging, marine park fees and insurance belong in the wider trip budget.
What does flying with your diving gear actually cost?
One Key Largo trip, priced line by line: Delta's domestic bag fees against six dive days of rental at Rainbow Reef, as listed on 13 September 2026.
The dive bag goes on the scale at the check-in counter, and the number on the display decides the gear bill. Under 50 lb, a second checked bag costs $55 each way on a domestic Delta ticket. At 51-70 lb, Delta adds a $100 overweight fee each way. Six dive days of full rental gear and a computer at Rainbow Reef in Key Largo cost $300. One tier on the scale separates saving $190 from paying $10 extra. 1, 3, 2
Delta charges a separate fee for each limit a bag breaks: one for the extra bag, one for the weight and one for the size, each way. A heavy dive bag pays its bag fee and its overweight fee together. The bag fees below are Delta's domestic fees, and the overweight and oversize fees cover flights within the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. 3, 1
| Delta charge | USD each way | USD round trip |
|---|---|---|
| First standard checked bag, under 50 lb (23 kg) | $45 | $90 |
| Second standard checked bag, under 50 lb (23 kg) | $55 | $110 |
| Overweight, 51-70 lb (23-31.75 kg), on top of the bag fee | $100 | $200 |
| Overweight, 71 to under 100 lb (32-45.36 kg), on top of the bag fee | $200 | $400 |
| Oversize, 63-80 in (161-203 cm), on top of the bag fee | $200 | $400 |
| Bag of 100 lb (45.36 kg) or more | Not permitted | Not permitted |
Bag fees are for Comfort and Main tickets. An eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express card, Medallion status or active-military service makes the first or second bag free. Delta lists overweight and oversize fees in USD or CAD. Its scuba rule applies the excess-weight fee to scuba equipment over 50 lb and refuses dive tanks of 100 lb or more or 115 linear inches.
| Option | What you pay for | USD, round trip or six dive days |
|---|---|---|
| Rent everything | Rainbow Reef full gear $35 and a computer $15, a day, for six dive days | $300 |
| Fly the gear, bag under 50 lb | Second checked bag, $55 each way | $110 |
| Fly the gear, bag 51-70 lb | Second bag $55 and overweight fee $100, each way | $310 |
| Fly the gear, bag 71 to under 100 lb | Second bag $55 and overweight fee $200, each way | $510 |
Worked example: one domestic Delta round trip and six dive days. Full gear at Rainbow Reef is a BCD, regulator, mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuit, at the shop's listed daily rates before any tax or multi-day price. Airfare, boat dives, tanks and weights sit outside every row. If the gear is your only checked bag, the bag fee is $45 each way, or $90 round trip.
Table view: Six Key Largo dive days: one rental bill against three Delta bag fees
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Rent, six days | $300 |
| Bag under 50 lb | $110 |
| Bag 51-70 lb | $310 |
| Bag 71 to under 100 lb | $510 |
Bringing the gear saves $190 while the bag stays under 50 lb. One tier heavier, the bag costs $10 more than the rental. Source: 1, 2, 3
The same worksheet fits any trip: your airline's fees in the bag rows, your dive shop's quote in the rental row. The yearly diving budget shows where one trip's gear bill sits in a full year of diving, and the marine park fee guide adds the park and conservation charges that sit beside it.
Weigh both versions of the trip against every limit
Pack the trip twice before you pay for it once. Pack the rental version and the own-gear version with the same clothes, camera and shoes, then weigh and measure every bag in its case, padding included. The gap between the two sets of bags is what the gear decision costs. Then test each packed bag against every limit on the ticket.
- Weight per bag: Delta's fees step up at 51 lb and again at 71 lb, and Emirates caps each bag on a Weight Concept ticket at under 32 kg (70.5 lb). 3, 10
- Size per bag: Delta's oversize fee starts at 63 linear inches (161 cm), and Emirates sends any bag over 203 cm (79.92 in) as cargo or freight. 3, 10
- Weight per person: Cayman Airways Express counts up to two checked bags together against 55 lb on its Twin Otter and Saab flights to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, plus one 15 lb carry-on. 5
- Checked and hand luggage together: Trans Maldivian's seaplanes allow 25 kg per person, 20 kg checked and 5 kg in the cabin, with 32 kg as the most any one bag can weigh. 6
A 50 lb dive bag leaves 5 lb of checked weight for everything else on the flight to Little Cayman. Cayman Airways counts both checked bags against one 55 lb allowance there, so every pound of the clothes bag past 5 lb costs $0.50 from Grand Cayman, and the 15 lb carry-on is the only other free space. Pack the own-gear version for the smallest aircraft on the ticket. 5

Which airline and route rules apply to your itinerary?
Every operating carrier on the ticket applies its own limits. Delta, Emirates and two island carriers show how far those limits move.
The ceiling moves with the route, so check each flight on its own. Within the United States, Delta takes a bag up to just under 100 lb for a $200 overweight fee. Between North, South or Central America and Europe or North Africa, the same airline refuses any bag over 70 lb and charges $100, CAD 120 or €85 for 51-70 lb. Flights to, from and within Australia and New Zealand stop at 70 lb too. 3
Emirates: scuba gear inside the allowance, extra weight by the kilo
Emirates carries scuba equipment, from diving suits and fins to the BCD, as part of your standard baggage allowance, with any air bottles emptied. Excess rates start once the total weight or number of bags goes over the free allowance. At the airport, a Weight Concept ticket pays $15 to $50 per kg, depending on the regions you fly between. 8, 10
| From / to | Middle East and South Asia, USD | Far East, USD | Europe, USD | Australia and New Zealand, USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Middle East and South Asia | $15 | $25 | $25 | $40 |
| Far East | $25 | $15 | $30 | $30 |
| Europe | $25 | $30 | $40 | $50 |
| Australia and New Zealand | $40 | $30 | $50 | $15 |
Travel between Larnaca and Malta is $15 per kg. Emirates sells extra weight ahead of the flight in 5 kg blocks, up to 50 kg, at 50% to 60% off these airport rates.
Buy the kilos before you reach the airport. Emirates takes 50% to 60% off its check-in rate for extra weight bought online up to 4 hours before departure. Its own London-to-India example gives 50% off 5 kg and 60% off 20 kg. London to India is a Europe to South Asia flight at $25 per kg at the airport, so 5 kg drops from $125 to $62.50, and 20 kg from $500 to $200. 10
Island hops and seaplanes
Small aircraft on the last leg bring small allowances, priced per pound or per kg. Cayman Airways Express charges twice as much per pound between Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands as between Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Trans Maldivian adds tax on top of its per-kg rate. 5, 6
| Carrier and route | Allowance per person | Excess rate | Example, each way, USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cayman Airways Express, Grand Cayman to Cayman Brac or Little Cayman | 55 lb across up to 2 checked pieces, plus one 15 lb carry-on | $0.50 per pound | 20 lb over: $10.00 |
| Cayman Airways Express, Cayman Brac to Little Cayman | 55 lb across up to 2 checked pieces, plus one 15 lb carry-on | $0.25 per pound | 20 lb over: $5.00 |
| Trans Maldivian Airways seaplane | 25 kg: 20 kg checked and 5 kg hand luggage; 32 kg at most per bag | $5.00 per kg plus tax | 10 kg over: $50.00 plus tax |
Examples apply the published rates to an illustrative overage. Cayman Airways takes excess payments by debit or credit card at the ticket counter only.
Money buys extra weight on both carriers, and space has a hard ceiling. Trans Maldivian carries oversized equipment, a surfboard for example, only on a chartered flight, because of the size of the seaplane's cabin and luggage hold. Ask the resort how a large dive case reaches the island before you pack one. 6
What rental savings can you realistically expect?
What renting costs in Bonaire, Key Largo and Cozumel, and what your own regulator and computer take off the bill, at prices listed on 13 September 2026. Pesos convert at 16.8630 per US dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for 4 September 2026.
A package costs less than its parts at all three shops. Buddy Dive in Bonaire charges $48 a day for its scuba set, plus a free computer, against $61 for the same pieces rented one by one. Rainbow Reef in Key Largo charges $35 for full gear against $49 in pieces. Jungle Divers in Cozumel charges 285 pesos a day for its standard package, while its BCD, regulator, mask and fins alone cost at least 570 pesos. 4, 2, 11
| Item | Buddy Dive, Bonaire, USD | Rainbow Reef, Key Largo, USD | Jungle Divers, Cozumel, MXN | Jungle Divers, USD at 16.8630 |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Upgraded package | - | - | 475 Comfort+: weight-pocket BCD, pro regulator, pro mask, open-heel fins and boots | $28.17 |
| BCD | $15 | $12 | 190 to 285 | $11.27 to $16.90 |
| Regulator | $15, with gauges and octopus | $15 | 190 to 285 | $11.27 to $16.90 |
| Mask | $8, with snorkel | $6; mask, fins and snorkel $10 | 95 to 150 | $5.63 to $8.90 |
| Fins | $8 | $6 | 95 to 190 | $5.63 to $11.27 |
| Wetsuit | $15; full wetsuit $22 | $12 | 95 to 190 | $5.63 to $11.27 |
| Dive computer | $15 | $15 | 190 | $11.27 |
| Dive light | $15, LED, without batteries | $10 | 95 | $5.63 |
Prices as each shop listed them on 13 September 2026, before any tax the shop adds. A week of Buddy Dive's scuba set costs $240, five times the daily rate. Jungle Divers' higher prices are its Comfort+ gear, including open-heel fins with boots, and its full 3 mm wetsuit; bigger faces need the pro mask, the shop says. Pesos convert at 16.8630 per US dollar, the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for 4 September 2026.
The saving depends on how the shop bundles what you leave at home. Bring your own regulator and computer, and the rest of Buddy Dive's kit rents for $230 a week, $10 under the $240 set that includes both. At Jungle Divers only the computer counts: the 285-peso package, regulator included, costs less than a BCD, mask and fins rented separately at 380 pesos or more. At Rainbow Reef the rest comes to $34 a day. 4, 11, 2
Table view: Three shops, six dive days: the full set against the rest of the kit
| Item | Rent the full set (USD) | Bring regulator and computer, rent the rest (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Buddy Dive, Bonaire | $240 | $230 |
| Jungle Divers, Cozumel | $202.81 | $135.21 |
| Rainbow Reef, Key Largo | $300 | $204 |
The gap is what a regulator and computer save: $10 at Buddy Dive, $67.60 at Jungle Divers and $96 at Rainbow Reef. For Key Largo on a domestic Delta ticket, $96 falls $14 short of a second bag's $110 round-trip fee, so the two pieces pay their way inside a bag you already check. Source: 4, 11, 2, 12
| Shop | Full set, six dive days, USD | The rest, after bringing regulator and computer, USD | Saving, USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buddy Dive, Bonaire | $240: scuba set at the 7-day rate | $230: BCD $75, wetsuit $75, mask and snorkel $40, fins $40, 7-day rates | $10 |
| Jungle Divers, Cozumel | $202.81: 3,420 MXN for package 285, computer 190 and wetsuit 95, a day | $135.21: 2,280 MXN for package 285 and wetsuit 95, a day | $67.60 (1,140 MXN) |
| Rainbow Reef, Key Largo | $300: full gear $35 and computer $15, a day | $204: BCD $12, mask, fins and snorkel $10, wetsuit $12, a day | $96 |
The full set at every shop is a BCD, regulator, mask, fins, wetsuit and computer; Jungle Divers adds a weight belt, and the other two add a snorkel. Buddy Dive's 7-day rates beat six daily rates ($48 × 6 = $288 for the set). Jungle Divers' wetsuit is its 2.5 mm reef suit at 95 pesos. Peso totals are divided by 16.8630.
Count rental days by the dives. DAN recommends at least 18 hours between the last dive of a multi-day trip and the flight home, and at least 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive. Before a 10 a.m. flight after a week of diving, the last dive ends by 4 p.m. the day before. DAN calls these minimums that reduce the risk of decompression sickness, and advises a substantially longer wait after decompression dives. 13
Rent for the days you dive, and ask for the weekly price. Buddy Dive's 7-day rate costs the same as five single days, so days six and seven come free. 4
Two companion pages go further. The break-even worksheet for buying or renting gear spreads ownership across many trips, and the dive package comparison shows what a package holds before you price around it. Heading to Cozumel? The Cozumel diving budget adds boats, lodging and marine fees to this rental.
Are scuba tanks and restricted items allowed?
Tanks fly empty, and the rule has an exact number. The FAA regulates a scuba cylinder holding air or another nonflammable, nontoxic gas as hazardous material once it reaches 200 kPa (29 psig, 43.8 psia) at 68°F (20°C). An empty cylinder, or one below that pressure, falls outside the rule. Airlines and airport screeners may still require the valve opened all the way for inspection. 9
Each airline sets its own conditions on top of the FAA line. Delta accepts an empty dive tank as checked baggage and refuses tanks of 100 lb or more or 115 linear inches. Emirates requires air bottles to be emptied. Cayman Airways accepts one set of scuba equipment with the regulator valve completely disconnected from the cylinder; its list names one empty tank, one knife, a mask, snorkel, BCD, fins, wetsuit and pressure gauge. 7, 8, 5
Make a battery list for the computer, lights and camera. Note each battery's type and watt-hour rating, then match it to the FAA's tiers for passengers. 14
- Lithium-ion, up to 100 Wh: allowed for personal use. 14
- Lithium-ion, 101 to 160 Wh: allowed with the airline's approval, with a limit of two spare batteries per person. 14
- Lithium-ion, over 160 Wh: forbidden on passenger aircraft. 14
- Ordinary AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and button cells: protected from damage and short circuit, in retail packaging, with taped terminals or in a battery case. A battery left in its wall charger still needs that protection. 15
Airlines can set tighter limits than the FAA. Trans Maldivian refuses smart luggage with a built-in, non-removable or inaccessible lithium battery, and accepts a smart bag only when its battery comes out completely before travel. If your light's battery needs airline approval, leave it at home: Rainbow Reef rents dive lights for $10 a day. 14, 6, 2
What if your equipment doesn't arrive with you?
Price the first dive day in rental gear before you leave home. That is what a late bag costs on the first morning. 4, 2, 11, 12
| Shop | What you rent for the day | USD for the day |
|---|---|---|
| Buddy Dive, Bonaire | Scuba set with its free computer | $48 |
| Rainbow Reef, Key Largo | Full gear $35 and a computer $15 | $50 |
| Jungle Divers, Cozumel | Standard package 285, computer 190 and 2.5 mm wetsuit 95 pesos: 570 MXN | $33.80 |
Daily rates before any tax the shop adds. Pesos convert at 16.8630 per US dollar, the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for 4 September 2026.
- Pack the bag's contents list, photographs and baggage receipt in your hand luggage.
- Send the dive shop your arrival time and your sizes, so a rental set can be ready if the bag runs late.
- Read your airline's and your insurer's claim conditions and reporting deadlines before you count on either to repay a rental.
The scuba insurance guide covers what the policy wording needs to say.
A spare day protects the dives that matter most. Put a course dive or a favorite site on the second day. If that margin adds a hotel night, count it on both sides of the comparison, since a late flight costs a renter the first morning too.
How to make your final packing decision
Bring the gear when its round-trip bag fees come in under the rental it replaces. On the six-day worksheets above, that line sits at $300 for Rainbow Reef, $240 for Buddy Dive and $202.81 for Jungle Divers. Bring just the regulator and computer when they fit in a bag you already check. 2, 4, 11, 12
Get two quotes from the dive shop
Ask for the full set and for the rest after your own pieces, for the days you dive. The gap between the quotes is your saving.
Decide, then reweigh
Choose rent, bring part or bring all. Reweigh the packed bags the night before you fly, and confirm each flight still runs on the carrier whose bag fees you priced.
Choosing between a liveaboard and shore diving? The liveaboard and shore diving cost comparison prices both kinds of trip from start to finish.

After the trip, write down what you paid and which pieces you used. Those two notes start the next trip's worksheet.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to check scuba equipment on flights?
On a domestic Delta ticket, a dive bag pays the standard checked-bag fee: $45 as a first bag or $55 as a second, each way. Scuba equipment over 50 lb adds $100 each way up to 70 lb. If the gear is your only checked bag and stays under 50 lb, the round trip costs $90. 1, 7, 3
Can you fly with scuba tanks?
Yes, empty. Delta accepts an empty dive tank, Emirates wants air bottles emptied, and Cayman Airways lists one empty tank in its scuba equipment. The FAA's hazardous-material line sits at 200 kPa (29 psig). For airport screening, the FAA points travelers to tsa.gov, so read TSA's current rules before you pack a cylinder. 7, 8, 5, 9
Which airlines allow scuba gear without extra fees?
Emirates counts scuba equipment inside your standard baggage allowance and charges excess rates only when the total weight or number of bags goes over. Cayman Airways includes one set of scuba equipment as checked baggage and charges only for excess. Delta charges a dive bag its usual checked-bag fee. 8, 5, 7
What's the difference between renting all your gear and bringing your own?
At Rainbow Reef in Key Largo, renting everything costs $50 a day with a computer, and you check no dive bag. Bringing everything replaces that with Delta's domestic bag fees: $110 round trip for a second bag under 50 lb, or $310 at 51-70 lb. Bringing only a regulator and computer cuts the rental to $34 a day and costs nothing extra if they fit in a bag you already check. 2, 1, 3
Do dive lights and cameras have special baggage restrictions?
Yes, through their batteries. A lithium-ion battery of 101 to 160 Wh needs the airline's approval, and one over 160 Wh stays on the ground. A light or camera goes in checked baggage only when fully powered off and protected, and spare batteries go in the cabin. Rainbow Reef rents a dive light for $10 a day. 14, 2
What happens if my diving equipment is delayed or lost?
You dive in rental gear until the bag arrives. Report the missing bag at the airport before you leave, keep the report and your baggage receipt, and ask the dive shop to hold a set in your size. Your airline's delayed-bag rules and your insurance policy decide whether any of that rental comes back to you.
Is it cheaper to rent or fly with scuba gear on a week-long trip?
Subtract the bag fees from the rental you avoid. A week of Buddy Dive's scuba set in Bonaire costs $240, so bringing everything wins when your round-trip bag fees come in under $240. For Key Largo on a domestic Delta ticket, a second bag under 50 lb costs $110 against $300 of rental over six dive days. 4, 1, 2
What should I do if my equipment doesn't fit baggage size or weight limits?
Split the load before you pay for it. On Delta, one 60 lb first bag costs $145 each way, $45 plus $100 overweight, while two bags under 50 lb cost $100. On Emirates, buy extra kilos online in 5 kg blocks, and ship anything over 203 cm as cargo. Trans Maldivian carries oversized equipment only on a charter. 1, 3, 10, 6
