Liveaboard vs shore diving: compare the complete trip cost

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Published prices from three liveaboards and two dive resorts, and one autumn 2026 week for two people priced line by line with what each price includes.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • One week for two people sharing this autumn: $6,990 in a Lower Deck cabin on the Turks & Caicos Explorer II, with meals and up to five dives a day, before its on-board tax and fuel surcharge; $3,960.32 at CoCoView Resort on Roatan with meals, daily boat trips and 19% tax; $2,722.50 for a studio at Buddy Dive on Bonaire with a car and six days of shore diving, plus meals and tax if charged. 1, 2, 3
  • The liveaboard needs more than 1.765 dives for every resort dive to win on cost per dive. Per person, the Explorer II's Lower Deck fare is 1.765 times CoCoView's taxed Ocean View week, and the boat's on-board tax and fuel surcharge raise that bar. 1, 2
  • Occupancy sets the per-person price. Buddy Dive's shore week costs $1,361.25 each for two in a studio and $1,100.92 each for six in a three-bedroom apartment, Low Season 2026. 3
  • Alone on the Explorer II, you pay 65% more for a guaranteed single cabin: the $3,495 Lower Deck fare becomes $5,766.75. 1
  • Buy trip cancellation insurance for either format. Explorer Ventures requires it for reimbursement of trip costs, and CoCoView's unused package nights are non-refundable even when weather or an airline delay is the cause. 1, 2

Prices are each operator's published US-dollar figures on 13 September 2026. Flights and insurance sit outside every total.

Picture the two weeks

On a liveaboard, you sleep where you dive. The Turks & Caicos Explorer II sells seven nights aboard with up to five dives a day, three meals daily except Friday's evening meal, snacks, and drinks, alcoholic ones included. You unpack once for the whole week. 1

On Bonaire, the shore week starts with car keys. Buddy Dive's Drive & Dive package on Bonaire pairs a seven-day rental vehicle with six days of unlimited diving from the shore, so you choose the site and the hour. At CoCoView Resort on Roatan, in Honduras, the boats leave twice a day and the beach is open for diving by day and after dark. 3, 2

Each price leaves out something different. The boat collects its tax and fuel surcharge on board, and Buddy Dive's shore week leaves you to ask about meals and tax. The week-for-two table below prices all three for the same two people and marks what you still have to add or ask about.

How much does a liveaboard dive trip cost?

Three boats priced from their operators' own pages on 13 September 2026, each with its own length and cabin basis.

The cheapest boat here puts you in a dormitory-style cabin. All Star Blackbeard's Cruises leaves Nassau on Saturdays for the Exuma Cays: six nights, all-inclusive, up to 19 dives, shared baths, $1,195 per person. 4

The Turks & Caicos Explorer II charges $3,495 to $3,995 per person, sharing, for seven nights in 2026, by deck. Nautilus Liveaboards prices its Socorro Island trips off Baja from $3,195 to $9,790 per person across three boats and several trip lengths. On the Nautilus UnderSea, eight nights hold up to 19 dives and ten nights up to 27, weather dependent. 1, 5

Nights, cabin and route differ on every boat; the week-for-two table below compares like with like. Nautilus publishes one price range for its whole fleet, so ask which boat and trip length your dates fall on. 5

The paid-on-top column is where fares grow. The Explorer II collects its port and hotel tax and fuel surcharge on board, so ask for the current amount in writing before the deposit. Nautilus wants its $35 port fee in cash, and skipping the crossing by charter flight to Socorro's navy airstrip costs at least $10,000 for the flight alone. 1, 5

What does a shore-based diving holiday cost?

A dive resort prices the week per person, and the season on your dates decides the figure. Buddy Dive on Bonaire sells its Drive & Dive shore week at $1,361.25 per person for two in a studio in Low Season. CoCoView Resort charges $1,664 per person for two in an Ocean View room in Value Season, plus 19% tax. 3, 2

Buddy Dive quotes US dollars per person per week at full occupancy; ask whether tax and meals are in. CoCoView includes airport transfers for stays of five nights or more, and a non-diver deducts $100 from the rate. 3, 2

The two prices buy different weeks. CoCoView feeds you and puts you on the boat twice a day, each trip one tank at the chosen site plus an optional drop-off dive. Buddy Dive hands you a car and the shoreline, and boat dives cost extra. CoCoView also lists all-day and remote-site trips during the week at an additional cost. 2, 3

A guide for unfamiliar shore sites is its own budget line; private vs group guiding shows how to price one.

Then add the lines every package leaves to you. Flights and insurance sit outside all three prices, and so do these. 1, 2, 3

  • Gear: the Explorer II and Nautilus both exclude rental, so weigh baggage costs vs rental before you pack. 1, 5
  • Charges on arrival: the Explorer II's on-board tax and fuel surcharge, Nautilus's $35 cash port fee, and any marine park and conservation fees at your destination. 1, 5
  • The gap before your flight: DAN recommends at least 18 hours between multiple days of diving and a flight, so price a hotel night when your schedule needs one. 6

Planning more than one trip this year? Fit this week into your annual diving costs, and use how to compare dive packages when two quotes from one resort differ line by line.

Use completed dives to compare value per dive

Cost per dive is the price divided by the dives you log. An advertised count is a ceiling. The Explorer II sells up to five dives a day, weather permitting, and Nautilus marks its 19- and 27-dive counts on the UnderSea weather dependent. Plan with the dives you expect to make, then test a lower number. 1, 5

At the same number of dives, the cheaper week is the cheaper dive. Per person, the Explorer II Lower Deck fare is $3,495 and CoCoView's Ocean View week is $1,980.16 with tax, a ratio of 1.765. The boat costs less per dive once your dives aboard outnumber your resort dives by more than 1.765 to 1, and by more again once its on-board tax and fuel surcharge are added. 1, 2

  1. List what each week allows

Use the operator's words: up to five dives a day on the Explorer II; unlimited shore and night diving plus up to four boat tanks a day at CoCoView; six days of unlimited shore diving at Buddy Dive. 1, 2, 3

  2. Count the dives you will make

Take off travel days, rest days and the last day before your flight home. DAN recommends at least 18 hours between multiple days of diving and flying. 6

  3. Divide each price by its own count

Use the per-person price with tax and fees added. Then run it again with a day lost to weather and see which week holds its value.

  4. Check the ratio against the gap

Divide the boat's full price by the resort's. The boat wins on cost per dive only when it gives you more than that many dives for each resort dive. Against CoCoView's taxed week this autumn, the Explorer II's fare alone gives 1.765, before its on-board tax and fuel surcharge. 1, 2

How does accommodation pricing differ between formats?

A per-person price assumes a number of people in the room. Buddy Dive prices each unit at full occupancy, so the same shore week costs $1,361.25 each for two in a studio and $1,100.92 each for six in a three-bedroom apartment in Low Season 2026, a gap of $260.33 per person. 3

3-bedroom apartment61,161.291,100.92

Every row is the same package: a 7-day rental vehicle and 6 days of unlimited shore diving. From studio to three-bedroom apartment, the per-person price falls 19.1% in Low Season and 22.3% in High Season. 3

On a boat, the deck sets the fare and the single supplement sets the solo price. The Explorer II's 2026 fares are per person at double occupancy, and a guaranteed single cabin costs 65% more. 1

Single prices add the operator's 65% surcharge to each listed fare. Every fare includes up to 5 dives a day, 3 meals daily except Friday's evening meal, snacks and drinks; the on-board tax and fuel surcharge, transfers and rental gear are extra in every row. 1

Blackbeard's sleeps its guests in dormitory-style cabins with shared baths. The Nautilus UnderSea has nine en-suite cabins for up to 19 guests. Decide how much privacy you need, then compare boats that meet it on the same occupancy. 4, 5

What happens to your money if the trip changes?

Both operators want the full price 60 days before you travel; the deposits differ. 1, 2

Unused portions of land packages are non-refundable for any reason, including airline delays, cancellations, weather or acts of God. 2

Weather sets the dive count. The Explorer II sells its dives weather permitting, and Nautilus calls its dive counts weather dependent; ask each boat in writing what a lost dive day returns to you. CoCoView's terms name weather among the reasons unused package days earn no refund. 1, 5, 2

Dive accident insurance and trip cancellation insurance are two products. DAN's dive accident cover pays for hyperbaric chamber treatment, physician and hospital charges and emergency transportation, plus airfare, hotels and meals when treatment after a covered diving accident delays your trip home. 7

Explorer Ventures' terms leave airfare and travel costs with the guest when a trip is cancelled, interrupted or delayed. Before you buy either policy, read what dive insurance covers. 1

Is a mixed shore-and-boat holiday the better fit?

At a shore resort, boat dives are the add-on to price. Buddy Dive publishes its three-bedroom Low Season week both with and without them. 3

Buddy Dive, three-bedroom apartment for six, Low Season 2026: the week with and without boat dives, per person 3

Six boat dives added240.00, or 40.00 a dive

Low Season runs 15 August to 18 December 2026. 3

CoCoView builds the mix into its price: two boat trips a day, unlimited shore and night diving, and meals. For divers who want the boat by day and the reef off the beach after dark, that week is the hybrid. 2

Read what a discount covers before you count it. Buddy Dive's Summer Super Shore Dive Weeks, 17 July to 27 August 2027, give every diver in a group free shore diving, and the terms say boat dives are charged as usual. 3

A mixed plan fits when your sites split between the shoreline and places a boat reaches. When every site on your list needs a boat, compare the liveaboard with a shore week that includes daily boat trips, as the budget table does.

Which one should you book?

Start from the number that decides your trip. On this autumn's published prices:

  • Book a shore week when the total decides it. For two sharing, CoCoView's Ocean View week is $3,960.32 with meals and tax, and Buddy Dive's studio week is $2,722.50 plus meals and tax if charged, against $6,990 for the Explorer II's Lower Deck before its on-board charges. 2, 3, 1
  • Book the liveaboard when you will dive its schedule. It beats CoCoView on cost per dive once your dives aboard outnumber your resort dives by more than 1.765 to 1, a bar its on-board tax and fuel surcharge raise. 1, 2
  • Book a bigger apartment when you travel as four or six. Buddy Dive's Low Season week falls to $1,199.13 per person for four and $1,100.92 for six. 3
  • Price the single supplement first when you travel alone. A guaranteed single on the Explorer II turns the $3,495 Lower Deck fare into $5,766.75. 1
  • Book a mixed shore week when your group wants both. CoCoView includes daily boat trips; Buddy Dive adds six boat dives for $240 per person at its three-bedroom Low Season rate. 2, 3

Before any deposit, get each price in writing for your dates, room and party size, with every tax and on-board charge on the quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a liveaboard cost per day?

Divide the fare by its nights and keep the basis attached. The Turks & Caicos Explorer II's Lower Deck fare of $3,495 for seven nights works out to $499.29 per person per night, sharing, before its on-board tax and fuel surcharge, transfers and rental gear. 1

What extra fees come on top of a liveaboard fare?

On the three boats priced here, the Explorer II adds its port and hotel tax and fuel surcharge on board, plus flights, airport taxes, transfers, nitrox, rental gear, courses and insurance. Nautilus adds a $35 port fee in cash, $80 per device for internet, rentals, nitrox and crew gratuities. Blackbeard's charges $20 each way for the airport transfer. 1, 5, 4

How much should I budget for equipment rental on each format?

Get each operator's day or week rate in writing: the Explorer II and Nautilus both price rental outside the fare. For scale, Rainbow Reef Dive Center in Key Largo lists a full package of BCD, regulator, mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuit at $35 a day, $14 less than the same pieces rented one by one at $49, and a dive computer at $15 a day. 8, 1, 5

Is a non-diving partner cheaper at a shore resort?

At CoCoView, yes. Non-divers deduct $100 from the listed rate, which makes an Ocean View week in Value Season $1,564 per person sharing, before the 19% tax. Ask any boat whether it sells a non-diver fare before you book a cabin for two. 2

Do longer shore stays cost less per night?

Yes at CoCoView's 14-night price, and no when you add single nights to a week, on its 2026 High Season rates. Fourteen nights in an Ocean View room cost $3,628 per person sharing before tax, or $259.14 a night, against $266.29 a night for the $1,864 seven-night stay. Extra nights were $270 each, more than the week's own nightly rate. Ask for Value Season and 2027 rates for your dates. 2

How long should I wait to fly after a dive week?

DAN recommends a minimum surface interval of 18 hours before flying after multiple dives a day or multiple days of diving, and 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive. Those intervals reduce the risk of decompression sickness without guaranteeing against it, so set the gap in your calendar before you price the flight. 6

Can I fly to Socorro Island instead of sailing?

Nautilus says a direct charter flight to the island's navy airstrip costs a minimum of $10,000 for the flight alone, with pre-payment required if you lack adequate insurance. Its Socorro fares include scheduled group transfers. 5
