How much does a year of diving cost?

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

A diving year line by line, priced from what dive shops, resorts, airlines and insurers listed in September 2026, with a two-year worksheet to rework with your own numbers.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • A first year of diving costs $3,206.69 in this worksheet, before flights, bags, any tax Buddy Dive adds, island spending and an insurance premium: a Massachusetts Open Water course, a student gear package, a shared low-season shore week on Bonaire with Buddy Dive's weekly rental set, the island's nature fee and DAN membership. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Year two drops to $1,681.25 for the same week, because the $1,176.44 course and the $349 gear package are one-time costs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Rent until you pass 28 diving days, and longer where rental is cheap. At PADI's benchmarks of $1,700 for a budget complete set and $60 a day to rent, buying pays from day 29, or day 31 once you add one regulator service. Rent Buddy Dive's $240 weekly set for 6 diving days a week and it takes 43 days. 6, 7, 3
  • Insurance is three separate purchases. DAN membership, from $40 a year, comes before DAN's dive accident insurance, and trip-cancellation cover is the third: Explorer Ventures tells liveaboard guests to buy their own. 5, 8, 9
  • Leave 18 hours between a week of diving and your flight, DAN's minimum after multiple days of diving, and price that last dry day into the trip. 10

Start with your diving calendar

Six days of unlimited shore diving on Bonaire, a rental vehicle, breakfast every morning and a studio shared with your dive buddy cost $1,361.25 each for a low-season week in 2026. 2 That week is one line of a diving year. The rest of the year adds the course that certifies you, the gear you rent or buy, the memberships and fees that renew, and the flight home.

Buddy Dive's shore package gives you 6 diving days in a week; the Turks & Caicos Explorer II offers up to 5 dives a day, weather permitting, across 7 nights aboard. 2, 9 Count the days in the water, then add the travel days around them.

  1. Mark the dates you can count on

The approved week off, with travel days on either side. This calendar sets the smallest budget to fund.

  2. Add the trips you hope to take

A second trip, a long weekend near the water. Price them, and decide now which goes first if money runs short.

  3. Remove the biggest trip

Price the year again. If the plan needs every trip to happen, keep the big one on flexible terms until its dates are firm.

With the diving calendar set, line it up with the rest of the year's travel in the annual travel budget review. A dive week draws on the same vacation days and the same savings as every other trip.

Annual costs vs. the cost of each dive

Some costs arrive once a year, however often you dive. Memberships, park fees and the service on gear you own sit here, each on its own clock. PADI Club, for one, renews itself every 12 months until you cancel. 11

Everything else rides with the trip. The package, the rental set, the checked bag and the nights around the diving grow with each trip. Per-dive prices help at the margin: 6 boat dives added to Buddy Dive's shore package raise the from-price by $240.00, or $40 a dive. 2 Cost per dive works best looking back, divided by the dives you actually made.

A worked annual cash budget

This worksheet prices one diver's first two years: $3,206.69, then $1,681.25. Both years take the same low-season week on Bonaire. Year one also buys the Open Water course and a student gear package, which drop out of year two. Each line is a published price, read on 13 September 2026. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Year two keeps renting. Rented one by one, the set's BCD, regulator, wetsuit and computer cost $300 for the week, so the $240 set stays the cheaper line for a diver who owns a mask, snorkel and fins. The course figure is the shop's grand total, tax line included. The gap between the years, $1,525.44, is the course plus the gear package. 1, 3

To make it your year, change the lines that differ. Each line below says what to enter, and most name the guide that prices your version.

  • Course: enter 0.00 if you already hold a card, or your shop's grand total. This worksheet takes the most expensive of the six complete courses in scuba certification costs, which also prices finishing a referral in Key Largo. 1
  • Student gear package: keep $349.00 if you train in cold water; Undersea Divers' warm-water referral students need a mask, fins and snorkel. 1
  • Rental set: enter your operator's price for the days you dive. If you buy a set, enter its price in that year and a regulator service every 24 months or 100 dives after; buying vs renting scuba gear works out the payback against six dive operators' rental prices, for a whole set or part of one. 15
  • Shore week: enter your operator's per-person price for your room share, plus tax. Liveaboard vs shore diving costs prices one week for two aboard a liveaboard and at two dive resorts, with what each price leaves out.
  • Nature fee: keep $40.00 for a calendar year of Bonaire trips, or enter your destination's park fee. The dive package comparison sets three dive weeks side by side with the taxes and park fees outside each price. 4
  • DAN membership: keep $40.00, or $60.00 for a family, and add the dive accident premium as a new line. Scuba insurance costs shows which insurers print their premiums and which quote them. 5
  • Flights and bags: add your fares and your airline's bag fees as new lines; the Delta table in the flying section prices a dive bag. 16

Does training belong in your first-year budget?

Yes: in the worksheet above, the course is $1,176.44 of year one's $3,206.69, the second-biggest line. 1 PADI's Open Water Diver course has three parts: knowledge development, confined-water skills in a pool, and 4 open-water dives with an instructor. 17 Undersea Divers in Danvers, Massachusetts prices each part on its own line, and a referral lets you finish the open-water dives with another shop. 1

Name the shop when you buy the eLearning. PADI sells it on its own store for $251.00 and points you to a dive center for the in-water steps. 18, 19 Undersea Divers adds $117 when a student skips naming it or picks another shop. 1 Finishing a referral in Key Largo? Sea Dwellers Dive Center offers an optional refresher pool session first, $120 plus tax, for up to 8 students. 20

All class payments are nonrefundable; the tiers move you into a future class. 1

Coming back after time away is a smaller line. PADI's ReActivate online refresher costs $85.00, and the ReActivated card also needs in-water practice you schedule with a dive professional. 21

Buying vs. renting equipment: the break-even calculation

Divide the price of the gear by the day rate it replaces. PADI's guide puts a budget complete set at around $1,700 and a complete rental set with a wetsuit at around $60 a day. Rent for 28 days and you have spent $1,680; on day 29 renting has cost more than buying. 6

At Buddy Dive, where the worksheet rents, the $240 weekly set comes to $40.00 a diving day over 6 days, so the $1,700 set pays for itself on day 43: year eight at one dive week a year, before any regulator service. 6, 3 Rental spending passes $1,700 on day 18 at Boston SCUBA and on day 101 at Jungle Divers' standard package in Cozumel. 22, 23, 24, 6

Pesos at the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate of 16.8630 per US dollar for 4 September 2026, published 8 September. Day counts use cash prices. PADI's $1,700 set leaves out a tank, weights and a bag; Jungle Divers' standard package covers a BCD, regulator, mask, fins and weight belt. Ask the two US shops what their sets include. 24, 6, 23

Buy the mask first and the regulator last. Most divers buy a mask, fins and snorkel during the Open Water course, PADI says, for $150 to $250, because a mask has to fit. A regulator runs $650 to $800, and PADI's guide makes the case for renting one if you dive once a year or less. Renting also lets you try BCD styles before you commit. 6

Owning adds a service bill. Southern Indiana Scuba charges $40 per regulator stage plus $4.25 in shop supplies per piece, so a first stage and two second stages come to $132.75 before parts. 7 SCUBAPRO recommends a service every 24 months or 100 dives. 15 One service added to the $1,700 set moves the break-even to day 31. 6, 7

How do you compare dive operator quotes?

Put every quote on the same footing: one person, the same room share, tax included. For two people sharing, four published dive weeks run from $1,361.25 to $3,995 per person before tax; the table adds tax where the operator publishes its rate. 2, 26, 27, 9 Six people sharing a 3-bedroom Buddy Dive apartment pay $1,100.92 each in Low Season, and a liveaboard week bundles most meals, tanks and air fills with up to 5 dives a day. 2, 9

CoCoView strongly recommends trip insurance. Explorer Ventures states it is not responsible for airfare or travel costs when a trip is cancelled, interrupted or delayed. 26, 9

Insurance and emergency money: separate concerns

Dive accident insurance, trip-cancellation cover and a cash reserve pay for three different bad days. DAN's dive accident insurance pays 100% of eligible accident medical expenses up to $500,000, includes divers age 70 and over, and is added after you join DAN. 8 Trip costs need their own cover: Explorer Ventures tells guests to buy trip-cancellation insurance to be reimbursed. 9

DAN's lost-equipment benefit covers gear lost or damaged in a covered diving accident. A bag the airline loses is a separate question. DAN's issued policy and certificate govern whenever they conflict with its online summary. 8

  • Trip length: DiveAssure's multi-trip annual plan covers up to 42 consecutive days per trip, and its single-trip plan up to 180 days. 29
  • Age and residence: DiveAssure covers diving from age 8 to 80, once you are outside your home country. 29
  • Exclusions: DiveAssure excludes medical conditions you knew about before buying and, unless the policy specifies otherwise, a travel supplier's bankruptcy. 29

What should you budget for flying after your last dive?

Your last dive sets your earliest flight. DAN recommends at least 12 hours on the surface before flying after a single no-decompression dive, and at least 18 hours after multiple dives a day or multiple days of diving. 10 Buddy Dive's week has room for it: 7 days of vehicle and 6 days of diving. 2

Standard fees for Comfort and Main passengers; an eligible Delta SkyMiles Amex card, Medallion status or active military service makes the first or second bag free. Delta charges excess weight on scuba equipment over 50 lb and turns away bags of 100 lb or more. 16, 30, 31

A dive bag adds $90 round trip as your only checked bag on a Delta flight within the US, or $110 as your second. 16 Whether that beats renting depends on the shop's menu and what its package holds: flying with scuba gear sets Delta's fees against six dive days of rental in Bonaire, Key Largo and Cozumel.

The FAA treats a scuba cylinder as hazardous material from 200 kPa (29 psig) at 68°F; an empty tank is unrestricted, and screeners can require its valve fully open. 32 Delta accepts one dive bag of scuba equipment and an empty tank as checked baggage. 30

Frequently asked questions

Should I include flights in my cost per dive?

Keep two numbers. A full-trip figure with flights, bags and the dry day before you fly shows whether the year is affordable. A diving-only figure compares operators, such as the $40 per boat dive that Buddy Dive's boat-dive package adds over its shore package. 2

What should a new diver buy before the first trip?

The pieces that have to fit. Undersea Divers sells a $349 student gear package for cold-water training dives, which it values at $494 retail. Its warm-water referral students need a mask, fins and snorkel, at 10% off through the shop, and cold-water fins need an adjustable heel strap. 1

Is PADI Club worth it for a returning diver?

Yes, if you would buy the refresher anyway. PADI's membership page lists a free ReActivate online refresher among the club's benefits, and ReActivate alone costs $85.00, more than a year of the club at its full price on either PADI page: $49.95 on the membership page, $54.95 on the blog. You still schedule the in-water practice for the ReActivated card with a dive professional. 11, 21, 12

What happens to my budget if I miss planned dives?

Each dive you make costs more, because the package price stays put. Lose 2 of Buddy Dive's 6 diving days to weather and the $1,361.25 week works out to $340.31 a diving day instead of $226.88, and Buddy Dive refunds no dives skipped by choice or lost to weather. At CoCoView, unused parts of a land package are non-refundable for any reason, weather included. 2, 28, 26

Does Bonaire's nature fee cover two trips in one year?

Yes, when both trips fall in the same calendar year. The fee covers both Bonaire national parks from January to December, and Bonaire's tourism site puts it at $40 per person, free for children up to 12. A December trip and a January trip pay it twice. 14, 4

How do I track spending across currencies and cards?

Record the quoted price and the amount your card was charged. Jungle Divers prices rental in pesos: 285 a day for its standard package, or $16.90 at the Federal Reserve's rate for 4 September 2026. Card prices count too: South Florida Diving Headquarters charges $72.10 by card for its $70.00 cash package. 23, 24, 25
