Carry-on scuba gear: what fits, and what to rent

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

The cabin limits on three real dive routes, what the shops in Cozumel, Amed and Labuan Bajo charge a day, and the point where buying your own beats renting.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The smallest box on the trip sets the bag. Wings Air's ATR flights into Labuan Bajo take a cabin bag of 35 x 30 x 20 cm at 7 kg, against 40 x 30 x 20 cm on the same group's jets and a 56 x 45 x 25 cm industry reference. 1, 2, 3
  • A 35 L travel pack misses that box on every side. The Aer Travel Pack 4 measures 54.5 x 34 x 23 cm empty and weighs 1.77 kg, so on the Labuan Bajo leg it rides in the hold, where propeller-only routes carry zero free checked allowance. 4, 1, 2
  • A full rental set runs $16 to $36 a day across these three legs: $16 at Amed, $20 on one Komodo boat, $30 on Cozumel and on the other Komodo boat, and 620 pesos, about $35.95, at Cozumel's itemized shop. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
  • Two Komodo boats ask every diver to own a computer, then rent one for $10 a day to anyone who turns up without. A Shearwater Peregrine weighs 122 g and costs $580, so it pays for itself on the 58th dive day. 6, 8, 11
  • Rent the heavy things, always. The discontinued Hydros Pro BCD weighs 5.28 kg, which puts the empty pack plus that BCD 0.05 kg over everything Wings Air allows in the cabin, and the 2.54 kg travel BCD Scubapro sells today takes nearly half of what is left. 12, 13, 4, 1

What one bag with dive gear actually means

Three legs, three different boxes. A week in Cozumel off a dive boat, ten days of shore diving at Amed in east Bali, then six nights on a Komodo boat out of Labuan Bajo. One bag for all of it. Dive gear is the easy thing to want and the hard thing to carry, because the last flight of the trip has the tightest cabin rule on the whole ticket. 1, 8

Most travelers picture the industry reference figure: 56 x 45 x 25 cm, about 63 liters of box. Wings Air, which flies the ATR turboprops into Labuan Bajo, allows 35 x 30 x 20 cm at 7 kg, about 21 liters. Everything below answers to that number. 3, 1, 14

So the order here follows the trip. The cabin box first, then the gear that clears it, then what each shop charges to rent the rest. Every price on this page comes from the operator's own page, read on 25 September 2026 and the Scubapro figures on 28 September. 7, 5, 6

How small is the smallest cabin box on your route?

Six published cabin-bag rules on the routes into Cozumel, Bali and Labuan Bajo, read on 25 September 2026.

Volume is the honest way to compare cabin rules, and airlines publish it as three numbers. Multiply them out and the spread is wide: 63 liters at the industry reference, 24 liters on Lion Group's jets, 21 liters on the Wings Air turboprops that serve Labuan Bajo. Same 7 kg of weight, a third of the space. 3, 2, 1

Every box is printed longest side first, so the rows compare. AirAsia publishes its own cabin bag as 56 x 23 x 36 cm, the same box in a different order. Volumes are the three published dimensions multiplied out, a rough guide only, since a soft pack squeezes and a sizer frame holds its shape. AirAsia's 7 kg covers a cabin bag and a personal bag together; its Xtra Carry-On upgrade raises the total to 14 kg with a 10 kg cap on any single bag. Garuda's cabin figures come from a third-party summary of its baggage rules rather than the airline's own page. Confirm them with Garuda before you fly.

One line in the Lion Group help center decides the whole itinerary. A trip that connects onto a Wings Air ATR follows the 35 x 30 x 20 cm box for the entire ticket, whatever airline issued it. Book the jet and the turboprop together and the small rule wins. 1

Weight bites before volume. The Aer Travel Pack 4, the 35 L pack MMT rates first among one-bag backpacks on published fit and weight, is 1.77 kg empty, which leaves 5.23 kg of a 7 kg allowance for everything inside it. 4, 1

The discontinued Hydros Pro BCD weighs 5.28 kg on its own, 0.05 kg past that remainder, and even the 2.54 kg travel BCD Scubapro sells today eats half of what is left. A jacket BCD is out of the cabin on this leg; a travel BCD costs you the clothes. 12, 13

What dive gear to bring, and what to leave

Carry the things that fit your face, your feet and your wrist. Rent the things that fit anyone. That one rule sorts a dive kit faster than any packing list, because the gear that has to match your body is light and the gear that only has to work is heavy. 11, 12

  • Mask. The one item worth its space every time. Renting costs $3 a day at Amed and, bundled with a snorkel, 140 pesos a day from the itemized shop on Cozumel, about $8.12 at 17.2454 pesos to the dollar. A rented skirt that leaks costs you the dive. 5, 9, 10
  • Dive computer. 122 g, 77 x 68 x 25 mm and $580 for a Shearwater Peregrine. Two Komodo boats print the same sentence: dive insurance is mandatory, as is your own personal dive computer. 11, 6, 8
  • Fins. Long, stiff and rentable on every leg here: $3 a day at Amed, 140 pesos on Cozumel, or folded into the full set everywhere else. Leave them home unless you dive on them weekly. 5, 9, 7
  • Wetsuit. A shorty rents for 250 pesos on Cozumel, about $14.50, and a confirmed 3 mm shorty for $10 on the Aurora. Amed's list prints $6 a day and names no style or thickness, so ask. It is the bulkiest thing a one-bag traveler can hand to somebody else. 5, 6, 9, 10
  • BCD and regulator. $6 each a day at Amed, $10 each on the Aurora, 250 pesos each on Cozumel. Together they are most of the weight and most of the volume of a dive kit. 5, 6, 9

The electronics are a rounding error. A 122 g computer is more than 40 times lighter than a 5.28 kg BCD. Put the whole buy-or-rent question on the BCD and the wetsuit, and the small items stop mattering. 11, 12

A year of diving hides this arithmetic inside single trips. MMT's year of diving budget and the break-even worksheet for buying gear run the same sums across a season instead of a week.

What does renting cost in Cozumel and Amed?

Five named dive shops on two islands, priced from their own pages on 25 September 2026.

Cozumel sells two philosophies on one island. One shop charges a single flat rate per diver per day and hands over everything. The other prices every piece in pesos, so you rent a regulator and keep your own mask. A reader who wants one number needs the first; a reader packing light needs the second. 7, 9

The first shop's flat rate covers BCD, regulator, mask, fins, boots, snorkel and wetsuit for one diver for one day. The second shop's 620 peso package covers BCD, regulator, mask and fins on its own dive trips only, and excludes the wetsuit and computer; buying those four pieces separately costs 780 pesos, so the package saves 160 pesos, about $9.28. The peso column is the shop's own price list; the dollar column converts at 17.2454 pesos to the dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for 18 September 2026, and is illustrative. A third shop on the island, Tres Pelicanos, sets out its Scubapro rental range in detail and prints no price at all. 17

Amed is the cheap leg, and it is itemized down to the boots. A full set is $16 a day, a computer $8, a mask $3. A second shop in the same village prints its rentals in rupiah. A third folds the gear into the dive price and charges nothing separate for it. 5, 18, 19

Rupiah prices stay exactly as the shop prints them. The Federal Reserve's weekly reference release publishes no rupiah rate, so a dollar figure here would be invented. Only two of the second shop's own rates are printed here, its full set and its dive computer; ask it for the torch and snorkel rates when you book. The third shop folds full equipment rental into fun-dive prices that run from IDR 850,000 for one shore dive to IDR 1,650,000 for three. The first shop's prices exclude dive and travel insurance.

Ten diving days at Amed with a full set and a computer comes to $240. A flat-rate week on Cozumel is $210 for the set alone. Those two numbers change how a shore-diving base at Amed reads next to the Cozumel diving budget, which adds the boats and the marine park fees on top. 5, 7

What do the Komodo liveaboards charge?

Two boats out of Labuan Bajo print the same requirement, word for word: dive insurance is mandatory, as is your own personal dive computer. Both then rent a computer for $10 a day. Read it as a strong preference with a fallback, and ask the boat which it means before you pay the balance. 6, 8

Owning the computer saves $8 to $10 a day on these lists. Cozumel's flat-rate shop lists no computer rental at all, so it sits outside this comparison. Source: 5, 6, 8

Gear rental sits outside the trip price on both boats. Six nights of a full set plus a computer is $180 on one and $240 on the other, on top of the cabin fare. That is the line most liveaboard quotes leave for later. 6, 8

A boat week and a shore week price differently once gear is inside the total. MMT sets them side by side in liveaboard against shore diving, and the Indonesia travel guide covers the flights that get you to the dock. Both boats require dive insurance, which MMT prices in what a dive policy costs. 6, 8

Should you buy your own computer or rent one?

At $10 a day, a $580 computer pays for itself on the 58th dive day. At Amed's $8 it takes 73 days. At the Cozumel itemized rate of 320 pesos, about $18.56, it takes 32. Count your real dive days over three years and the answer stops being a feeling. 11, 6, 5, 9, 10

Break-even is the purchase price divided by the day rate, rounded up to a whole day. It leaves out the bag space, the airline weight and the servicing that owned kit adds, all of which push the real crossover further out. The BCD priced here is the Go, the travel BCD Scubapro sells on its own store today at $739 and 5.6 lb, or 2.54 kg. The Hydros Pro this page uses for the cabin-weight math is 11.65 lb, or 5.28 kg, and Scubapro no longer sells it. Peso figures convert at 17.2454 pesos to the dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for 18 September 2026.

A BCD is the opposite call. The travel BCD Scubapro sells today is $739, which is 74 dive days at the Komodo rate and 124 at Amed's $6. It weighs 2.54 kg, nearly half the 5.23 kg the empty pack leaves you, so 2.69 kg is left for clothes, a regulator and everything else. Rent the BCD, every trip. 13, 6, 5, 4, 1

The mask is the cheap exception. $3 a day at Amed sounds like nothing until a rental skirt leaks on the third dive of a $210 week. Buy the mask, keep it in the cabin, and rent everything with a hose on it. 5, 7

Mask, fins, computer: packing the carry-on

The bag gets packed twice: once for the long-haul flight, once for the turboprop. The second pack is the one that catches people out, and it happens in a hotel room in Bali the night before the flight to Labuan Bajo. Do it at home first, with scales. 1

  1. Weigh the packed bag before the taxi

Wings Air's cabin box is 35 x 30 x 20 cm at 7 kg, and the Aer Travel Pack 4 uses 1.77 kg of that empty. What is left for gear, clothes and electronics is 5.23 kg. 1, 4

  2. Split the kit into a cabin pile and a hold pile

A dive knife and a spear gun travel in checked bags only, per TSA's own rules, and anything sharp in a checked bag should be sheathed or securely wrapped. The officer at the checkpoint makes the final call on any item. 20, 21

  3. Check the aircraft type on the last leg

An itinerary that connects onto a Wings Air ATR follows the smaller 35 x 30 x 20 cm cabin box for the whole ticket, whatever airline issued it. 1

  4. Budget for the hold on the propeller leg

Lion Group routes served only by propeller aircraft carry zero free checked allowance, against 15 to 20 kg in economy on the jets. The pack goes below on that sector, and it goes below as a paid item. 2

  5. Read your carrier's scuba policy for the long leg

Southwest takes scuba equipment as checked baggage in place of one free piece at no extra charge and waives the oversize fee, with a ceiling of 100 lb and 115 total inches; standard and overweight fees still apply, and air tanks travel empty. 22

Three legs, one bag

Here is the route the numbers on this page came from, laid out as a plan to copy. Swap the destinations and the shape holds: one leg where the shop rents everything, one leg where you rent by the piece, one leg where the boat expects you to arrive equipped. 7, 5, 6

→ The Wings Air ATR into Labuan Bajo takes 35 x 30 x 20 cm at 7 kg in the cabin, and propeller-only routes carry no free hold allowance. 1, 2, 14

With less time: With ten days instead of 23, drop Cozumel and fly straight to Bali. Amed's shore diving needs no boat schedule, and ten days of full kit plus a computer is $240. 5

Twenty-three nights in one bag changes where you sleep, too. Monthly rates beat nightly ones sooner than most travelers expect, and MMT's monthly stays against short bookings has the crossover point. The marine park fees page covers the line most dive budgets miss entirely.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to dive without owning gear?

Shore dive, and rent by the piece rather than by the set. That is the structural choice; the day rates only decide how much it saves you, and the cheapest itemized list on this route is $16 a day at Amed against $30 on a Komodo boat. Lodging, food and boat fees are the rest of the bill, and MMT prices both in Amed for a diving month and the Cozumel diving budget. 5, 8

Do I have to check a dive knife?

Yes. TSA's own rule puts knives in checked bags only, sheathed or securely wrapped, and spear guns get the same answer. The officer at the checkpoint makes the final call on whether any item goes through. 20, 21

Does an airline charge extra for scuba gear?

It depends on the carrier. Southwest accepts scuba equipment as a checked bag in place of one free piece, waives the oversize fee, and caps the gear at 100 lb and 115 total inches, with standard and overweight fees still charged. United and American publish their own scuba baggage terms; read yours before you fly, because the allowance and the fee differ by carrier. MMT prices the wider question in baggage costs for flying with your own gear. 22

Which piece of gear is worth buying first?

The dive computer, then the mask. Two Komodo boats ask every diver to own a computer, and a Shearwater Peregrine is 122 g and 77 x 68 x 25 mm at $580, which costs a one-bag traveler almost nothing in space or weight. Everything with a hose on it stays rented. 6, 8, 11

How many dive days make a computer worth buying?

Do it in two steps. Divide the purchase price by the day rate you will actually face, which the break-even table above already does for a $580 Shearwater Peregrine at the three rates on this route. Then open your logbook and count the dive days you recorded in the last three years, not the ones you meant to. The second number is the one that decides it. 11, 6, 5, 9, 10

Is a wetsuit worth carrying in one bag?

Rarely, and water temperature is what settles it. Write to the shop before you book and ask two things: the water temperature in the month you are coming, and what thicknesses it keeps in your size. A shop that answers both has a suit for you. Renting is cheap anyway, from $6 a day at Amed to 250 pesos on Cozumel, about $14.50, and a suit is the bulkiest thing in a dive kit. 5, 9, 10

What if the dive shop publishes no rental price?

Ask for it in writing before you book the dives. Tres Pelicanos on Cozumel sets out its Scubapro rental range in full and prints no price. Scuba Odessey at Amed prints no rental line because gear sits inside its dive prices, which run from IDR 850,000 for one shore dive to IDR 1,650,000 for three. 17, 19

Will a 35 L travel pack fit the Komodo flight?

In the hold, yes. The Aer Travel Pack 4 measures 54.5 x 34 x 23 cm empty and Wings Air's ATR cabin box is 35 x 30 x 20 cm, so the pack goes below on that leg. Lion Group gives zero free checked allowance on propeller-only routes, so budget the hold fee into the ticket. 4, 1, 2
