The pick, and the numbers behind it
One bag, six stated criteria, and the airline scale that settles the argument.
At the boarding door in Bangkok the limit is written in kilograms, and the number to beat is 7. AirAsia allows two cabin pieces with a combined weight of 7 kg, and the main piece has to come in under 56 x 36 x 23 cm. 5 A 35 L travel pack that weighs 1.77 kg empty has already spent a quarter of that allowance before your first shirt goes in.
That is the moment a one-bag purchase is really about. Everything else, the harness, the pockets, the color, is comfort. The bag either goes through the sizer and over the scale or it goes into the hold with a fee attached.
The Aer Travel Pack 4 35L wins here on stated numbers, at $259.00. Aer publishes 35 L, 21.5 x 13.5 x 9 inches and 3.90 lbs for it, with a suspended laptop pocket that takes a 16-inch machine. 1, 2 Those figures clear Volaris, Avianca and AirAsia, which makes it the most widely legal 35 L bag in this set.
- Capacity. 35 L, the largest volume Aer's travel-pack line offers. 1
- Dimensions against a real limit. Every airline below publishes its own figure; the pack is measured against each one.
- Empty weight. 3.90 lbs, or 1.77 kg, which is the first bite out of a 7 kg cabin cap. 1
- Water resistance in the maker's words. Aer says water-resistant, with a triple polyurethane coating and untaped seams. 7
- Warranty. Lifetime cover on manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship, for the original purchaser with proof of purchase. 3
- Price on a dated day. $259.00 on 25 September 2026, read from Aer's own product page. 1
Six criteria, all of them printed by the companies that make the bags and the airlines that carry them. Every number below comes from a maker's or a carrier's own page on 25 September 2026, and each page is linked at the foot of this article.
Will a 35 L pack clear a budget airline's cabin limit?
Four carriers, four different rules, one pack measured against all of them.
Three of these four airlines let the Travel Pack 4 35L on board; the fourth writes a rule no 28 L bag clears either. Volaris publishes its cabin sizes in inches, so the pack goes in as Aer prints it. Avianca, AirAsia and Lion Air publish centimeters, so the table converts Aer's inches at 2.54 cm to the inch. 9, 4, 5, 6
| Airline | Its published cabin size | Cabin weight rule | Travel Pack 4 35L | Tightest margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volaris (Mexico) | 22.4 x 15.7 x 12.9 in per bag, 2 bags | 22 lbs for both bags together | Clears | 0.9 in of length to spare |
| Avianca (Colombia) | 55 x 35 x 25 cm including wheels and handles | 10 kg for the carry-on | Clears | 0.39 cm of length to spare |
| AirAsia | 56 x 36 x 23 cm for the overhead piece | 7 kg for both pieces together | Clears | 0.14 cm of depth to spare |
| Lion Air | 40 x 30 x 20 cm | 7 kg | Over the limit | 14.61 cm of length over |
The pack is 21.5 x 13.5 x 9 in, which converts to 54.61 x 34.29 x 22.86 cm. Aer's own centimeter figures round to 54.5 x 34 x 23 cm, and its Travel Pack 3 page rounds the same 9-inch depth to 21.5 cm, so the conversion above is the safer number to hold against a sizer. Volaris's allowance applies to its Clean Base and v.club fares; Avianca includes the carry-on on every fare except Basic.

Volaris's rule is the one people misread. It allows two cabin bags, each up to 22.4 x 15.7 x 12.9 in, and then caps the pair at 22 lbs together. Everything you carry counts toward that figure, a handbag and a camera bag included. 9 An empty 3.90 lb pack is 17.7 percent of the allowance on its own, and whatever hangs off your other shoulder comes out of the same 22 lbs.
Viva Aerobus, LATAM and Wingo did not publish a readable baggage page on 25 September 2026, so this page prints figures for none of them. Open each one yourself before you book.
How much gear fits after the empty pack?
Subtract the bag from the airline's cap and you get the number that actually limits your packing list.
The useful figure is the cap minus the bag. Airlines publish a ceiling; a pack spends part of it before you touch it. On AirAsia the Travel Pack 4 35L leaves 5.23 kg for clothes, shoes, a laptop and a charger. On Avianca the same pack leaves 8.23 kg. 5, 4, 1
| Airline | Cabin weight cap | Empty pack | Left for gear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avianca | 10 kg, one carry-on | 1.77 kg | 8.23 kg |
| Volaris | 22 lbs, two bags together | 3.90 lbs | 18.10 lbs |
| AirAsia | 7 kg, two pieces together | 1.77 kg | 5.23 kg |
| Lion Air | 7 kg | 1.77 kg | 5.23 kg |
Aer publishes 3.90 lbs, which converts to 1.769 kg at 0.45359237 kg to the pound; the table rounds to 1.77 kg. Volaris stays in pounds because that is the unit on its own page. The Lion Air row is arithmetic only, since the same pack is already over that carrier's size rule.
Table view: Kilograms left for your gear after the empty pack
| Item | Value (kg) |
|---|---|
| Avianca, 10 kg cap | 8.23 kg |
| Volaris, 22 lbs cap | 8.21 kg |
| AirAsia, 7 kg cap | 5.23 kg |
| Lion Air, 7 kg cap | 5.23 kg |
Take the AirAsia bar as your planning figure. Volaris's 22 lbs converts to 9.98 kg and covers two bags together, so a daypack eats into the same number. Build your packing list against 5.23 kg and every other carrier here becomes easy. Source: 9, 4, 5, 6, 1

This is where a bag's empty weight turns into money. Aer's lightest 35 L pack, the Travel Pack 4 Ultra, saves 5.44 oz over the standard model and costs $50.00 more, about $9.19 an ounce. 11, 1 MMT's guide to the cost of lighter gear runs that sum for a whole kit.
Divers meet the wall earlier than anyone. A regulator and a computer in a 7 kg cabin allowance leave almost nothing for clothes, which is why flying with your own dive gear usually ends in a checked bag and a rental decision.
Is the Aer Travel Pack waterproof?
Aer answers this on its own FAQ page, and the answer is one word away from what most buyers remember.
Aer's word is water-resistant. Its FAQ page states that all of its bags carry a triple polyurethane coating for water resistance, and that water-resistant differs from waterproof because the seams stay untaped. Aer recommends a rain cover or an umbrella for a rain shower. 7
That applies to every model on this page, the sailcloth versions included. Fabric changes how long the outside holds off rain; the seams stay the same. Pack a dry bag for a laptop and a passport if your route runs through a wet season.
One Aer listing goes further than the rest. The Travel Pack 4 X-Pac 35L names YKK waterproof zippers in its own feature list, at $289.00 and 3.75 lbs. 12 Zippers are one seal among many, so read that as a wetter-weather upgrade rather than a promise about the whole bag.
| Fabric | What Aer says about it | Which packs use it | Empty weight at 35 L |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1680D Cordura | Toughest and most abrasion-resistant | Travel Pack 4 35L, Travel Pack 4 28L, Travel Pack 3, Travel Pack 3 Small | 3.90 lbs |
| VX-42 X-Pac | Adds structure and water resistance | Travel Pack 4 X-Pac 35L, Travel Pack 3 X-Pac | 3.75 lbs |
| Ultra400X | Lightest of the three, with the highest strength-to-weight ratio and the most water resistance | Travel Pack 4 Ultra 35L | 3.56 lbs |
Cordura and X-Pac each also come in the older Travel Pack 3 generation at a few ounces more; Ultra400X exists only on the Travel Pack 4 line.
Which Aer travel pack should you buy?
Seven travel packs, two generations, and a $10 step between them at every size.
Aer sells the same bag in two generations and three fabrics, from $229.00 to $309.00. The Travel Pack 4 line is current. Every Travel Pack 3 page Aer still hosts carries a banner pointing at its Travel Pack 4 replacement. 2, 13, 14

| Travel Pack 3 X-Pac | 35 | 21.5 x 13 x 9 | 3.90 | VX-42 X-Pac | 279.00 |
Every model listed fits a 16-inch laptop in a padded, suspended pocket, in Aer's own wording on all seven pages. Prices are Aer's US list prices on the research date. The Travel Pack 3 pages remain live and flag a newer version.
Table view: What the newer generation costs at each size
| Item | Travel Pack 3 (USD) | Travel Pack 4 (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| 35 L Cordura | $249 | $259 |
| 28 L Cordura | $229 | $239 |
| 35 L X-Pac | $279 | $289 |
The step is exactly $10 at all three sizes, and the newer bag is lighter every time: 0.22 lbs at 35 L Cordura, 0.27 lbs at 28 L, 0.15 lbs on X-Pac. Ten dollars for a quarter pound is the cheapest weight on this page. Source: 2, 13, 14, 1, 10, 12
Buy the 35L if you travel for longer than a week. Buy the 28 L version if your torso is short, if you fly carriers with a single small cabin piece, or if a fuller 35 L bag tempts you into exceeding a 7 kg cap. The 28 L Travel Pack 4 weighs 3.52 lbs and lists at $239.00. 10
The laptop pocket decides it for some buyers. All seven packs take a 16-inch machine in a padded, suspended pocket, in Aer's own wording on each product page. 2 If the trip is a working one, price the desk and the data alongside the bag with MMT's remote-work month budget.
What is the best carry-on backpack for travel under $250?
Two other makers publish their numbers. One beats Aer on price and weight, and gives some of it back at the sizer.
Cotopaxi's Allpa 35L undercuts the Aer pick on both price and weight. It lists at $230.00, weighs 2 lb 15 oz (1.33 kg) against the Travel Pack 4 35L's 3.90 lbs, a difference of 0.97 lbs, and carries Cotopaxi's lifetime warranty with repairs through its Guaranteed for Good program. 8, 1
| Bag | Volume (L) | Size | Empty weight (as published) | Price (USD) | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aer Travel Pack 4 35L | 35 | 21.5 x 13.5 x 9 in | 3.90 lbs | 259.00 | Anyone flying Avianca or AirAsia who wants one bag to cover both |
| Cotopaxi Allpa 35L | 35 | 22 x 12 x 10 in | 2 lb 15 oz (1.33 kg) | 230.00 | A lower budget on carriers with roomier sizers, and a 15-inch laptop |
| Cotopaxi Allpa 28L | 28 | 19 x 12 x 9 in | 1.02 kg, or 2 lb 8 oz | 205.00 | A shorter torso, a strict 7 kg cap, or a two-week trip |
| Decathlon Quechua NH Escape 500 32L | 32 | Unverified, see note | Unverified, see note | 89.99 | A first one-bag trip on the smallest possible outlay |
Cotopaxi gives weights in kilograms and Aer in pounds; both are reproduced as published. Cotopaxi's Allpa 28L page prints 2 lb 8 oz and 1.02 kg for the same bag, and those two figures differ by 0.11 kg. The Allpa shell is recycled 840D ballistic ripstop nylon with a PFAS-free finish the page describes as water-resistant, shedding light rain, snow and spills. Decathlon's specification tab stayed shut on 25 September 2026, so its weight and dimensions stay off this page.
The Allpa gives the saving back at the sizer. Cotopaxi publishes 22 x 12 x 10 in, which converts to 55.88 x 30.48 x 25.4 cm. That is 0.88 cm past Avianca's 55 cm length and 2.4 cm past AirAsia's 23 cm depth. 8, 4, 5 On Volaris, where the sizer is 22.4 x 15.7 x 12.9 in, it fits with room in every direction. 9
The Allpa 28L is the cleaner alternate. At 19 x 12 x 9 in, or 48.26 x 30.48 x 22.86 cm, it sits inside Avianca's and AirAsia's rules and costs $205.00. 15, 4, 5 Against Aer's 28 L Travel Pack 4 at $239.00 that saves $34.00 and roughly a pound. Cotopaxi prints two weights for the same bag, 2 lb 8 oz and 1.02 kg, which differ by 0.11 kg, so the saving lands between 1.02 and 1.27 lbs. 15, 10
Decathlon's Quechua NH Escape 500 32L is the budget answer at $89.99, described on Decathlon's own page as carry-on sized with 15 pockets. 16 Its specification tab stayed shut on 25 September 2026, so its weight and dimensions are missing here, and those two figures decide whether a bag clears a sizer. For a first one-bag trip it is still the cheap way to find out whether the format suits you.

The spread across a single category is $219.01, and the highlighted bar is the pick. The cheapest bag here costs $169.01 less than the pick, and the page carries fewer verified numbers about it than about any other bag. Source: 11, 12, 14, 1, 2, 10, 8, 13, 15, 16
What does the lifetime warranty actually cover?
Two makers here promise a lifetime, and both mean the same narrow thing.
Aer's lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects, and stops there. The page says it covers defects in materials or workmanship for the entire lifespan of the product, for the original purchaser with proof of purchase, and transfers only to someone who received the bag as a gift. 3
- Covered: a seam that gives way, a zipper that fails, a buckle that breaks, for as long as you own the bag. 3
- Excluded: normal wear and tear, UV fade, rips, tears, punctures, abrasion and accidental damage. 3
- Proof of purchase matters. Keep the receipt with your travel documents, because the claim needs it years later. 3
- Cotopaxi runs its own version, a lifetime guarantee with repairs under its Guaranteed for Good program, on the Allpa packs above. 8
Read the exclusions as a maintenance list. The damage a travel pack actually collects, a scuff from a conveyor belt or a tear from a luggage rack, sits outside both policies. A lifetime warranty is insurance against a bad batch, and the reason to buy either bag is the numbers above it.
How do you choose your bag in twenty minutes?
Five steps, your own two airlines, and a scale you already own.
Start with your next two flights, then pick the bag. The best pack is the one legal on the carriers you fly most, and the rules on this page span 40 x 30 x 20 cm to 22.4 x 15.7 x 12.9 in. 6, 9
Name your two tightest airlines
Write down the two carriers you fly most often in the next year. Open each one's own baggage page and copy the cabin size and weight figure with the date you read it.
Pick the fabric for your weather
Aer's fabric table above ranks the three. All three carry untaped seams, so add a dry bag either way. 7
Check the price on the day you buy
The ten prices on this page were read on 25 September 2026. Open the maker's page before you pay, and confirm the fare class that comes with your cabin allowance.
One bag also changes what happens after the airport. A 35 L kit means doing laundry on the road, which suits the rhythm of a monthly stay more than a string of two-night hotels. The carriers on this page fly exactly those routes, across Mexico and around Indonesia.
Buy the Travel Pack 4 35L at $259.00 if you want one bag that clears the most doors. Take the Allpa 35L at $230.00 if the money matters more than an AirAsia sizer, the Allpa 28L at $205.00 for a shorter torso, and the Quechua at $89.99 to find out whether one-bag travel suits you at all. 1, 8, 15, 16
Frequently asked questions
Is the Aer Travel Pack the best carry-on backpack for travel?
On the criteria this page can check, yes. The Travel Pack 4 35L at 21.5 x 13.5 x 9 in clears Volaris's 22.4 x 15.7 x 12.9 in sizer, Avianca's 55 x 35 x 25 cm rule and AirAsia's 56 x 36 x 23 cm rule, while carrying 35 L and a 16-inch laptop for $259.00. Lion Air's 40 x 30 x 20 cm rule defeats it, and every other pack here as well. 1, 9, 4, 5, 6
Is the Aer Travel Pack 4 worth $10 more than the Travel Pack 3?
Buy the older bag only at a discount bigger than $10.00. Aer's own pages show the same $10.00 step and a small weight saving at every size, 35 L, 28 L and X-Pac alike, and every Travel Pack 3 page already flags its Travel Pack 4 replacement. 2, 1, 13, 10, 14, 12
Is a 40L travel backpack too big for carry-on?
For the carriers on this page, a 40 L pack is a gamble. Aer's travel-pack line stops at 35 L, and that 35 L bag already fills AirAsia's 23 cm depth to within 0.14 cm. 1, 5 A 40 L bag adds volume in the direction a sizer measures. Osprey's Farpoint 40 was the obvious 40 L candidate here; its own page and its retail listing both refused to open on 25 September 2026, so this page carries no 40 L figures at all.
Which Aer bag is about 35 L and water-resistant?
Four of them: the Travel Pack 4 35L at $259.00 and 3.90 lbs, the Travel Pack 4 X-Pac 35L at $289.00 and 3.75 lbs, the Travel Pack 4 Ultra 35L at $309.00 and 3.56 lbs, and the older Travel Pack 3 at $249.00 and 4.12 lbs. Aer calls all of them water-resistant, with untaped seams; only the X-Pac 35L names YKK waterproof zippers. 1, 12, 11, 2, 7
Does a 35 L pack fit AirAsia's cabin allowance?
The Aer Travel Pack 4 35L does on size, with 1.39 cm of length, 1.71 cm of width and 0.14 cm of depth to spare against 56 x 36 x 23 cm. Weight is the harder test: AirAsia's 7 kg covers two pieces together, and the empty pack takes 1.77 kg, leaving 5.23 kg. Cotopaxi's Allpa 35L goes 2.4 cm over on depth. 5, 1, 8
What is the cheapest bag here that works for one-bag travel?
Decathlon's Quechua NH Escape 500 32L at $89.99, which Decathlon describes as carry-on sized with 15 pockets. Its specification tab failed to open on 25 September 2026, so its weight and dimensions are absent from this page, and both decide whether it clears a sizer. The cheapest fully specified alternate is Cotopaxi's Allpa 28L at $205.00, 19 x 12 x 9 in and 1.02 kg. 16, 15
Should you pay extra for the X-Pac or Ultra version?
Only for a reason you can name. The X-Pac 35L costs $30.00 over the standard pack and adds structure, more water resistance and YKK waterproof zippers. The Ultra 35L's own weight-for-price trade, and the verdict on it, is in the "$9.19 an ounce" callout above. 12, 11, 1, 7
