Dive insurance is sold country by country and region by region. Read each product here as an example of the wording to look for where you live.
What does dive insurance actually cover?
Picture the dive deck after the night dive. Gear is rinsed, logbooks are open, and tomorrow's deep dive is already on the whiteboard. Whether that dive is covered comes down to a few lines in a certificate. On DAN World Australia's Master plan, the “Maximum diving depth for coverage” is “50m”. On its Preferred plan, the same line reads “Unlimited”. 7
DAN World's page lists what its dive accident cover pays for, in these words. 1
- Accident medical expenses: “hyperbaric chamber treatment, physician and hospital charges and emergency transportation by ground, air or marine ambulance.” 1
- A delayed trip home: “airfare, hotels, meals and incidentals if your return travel is delayed due to treatment prescribed by a doctor after a covered diving accident.” 1
- Accidental death and dismemberment: “loss of life or limb resulting from a covered diving accident or named water sport accident while on a trip.” 1
- Permanent and total disability, if you are “permanently unable to return to work due to a covered diving accident or named water sports accident while on a trip.” 1
Dive insurance is easier to price as three budgets. The premium is only the first.
- The price of getting covered: the premium, plus any membership the seller requires. DAN puts it plainly: “DAN membership alone does not provide coverage for costs of a dive accident.” 6
- What stays with you under the wording: deductibles, limits and exclusions. DiveAssure's schedule lists “Accident and Acute illness: $75” and “Cancellation/Curtailment: $50”. 8
- The cash you front while a claim is sorted. DAN's travel protection FAQ sets its direct-payment line at “acute treatments up to $1,000.” Keep a card with room above that line. 10
Then set the cover against what the trip already pays for. What your dive package includes is the place to start, because insurance only earns its price on the gaps.
How much does scuba diving insurance cost per trip?
The prices dive insurers print are annual. DAN World's page prints “Annual coverage starts at US$65/year” and, as a separate line, cover “up to US$250,000”. It adds only that “Coverage and availability varies by region and plan.” DAN World Asia Pacific prints three tiers, and its US$250,000 tier costs US$150. DAN US prices appear after you choose a state or province. DAN Europe and DiveAssure route every plan to “Get a quote”. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
| Tier | Annual premium, USD | Limit, in DAN's words |
|---|---|---|
| DAN World dive accident cover, starting price | from 65 | “varies by region and plan”; the page's ceiling is “up to US$250,000” |
| DAN World Asia Pacific, Domestic Local | 85 | “Up to US$50,000” |
| DAN World Asia Pacific, Worldwide Master | 120 | “Up to US$125,000” |
| DAN World Asia Pacific, Worldwide Preferred | 150 | “Up to US$250,000 PO” (per occurrence) |
| DAN US Master | quote only | “up to $125,000 for dive accidents, which is the total limit over the life of the policy” |
| DAN US Preferred | quote only | “up to $250,000 per claim” |
| DAN US Guardian | quote only | “up to $500,000 per claim” |
DAN US prices appear only after you pick a state or province in DAN's coverage tool. DAN US limits come from DAN's plan comparison dated 25 September 2024, which its current pages still link. The Asia Pacific tiers list ages 8-75.
Premium and limit rise together. In Asia Pacific, US$30 more a year moves you from Master's US$125,000 to Preferred's US$250,000 per occurrence. In Australia, Preferred costs AUD 42 more than Master and doubles the limit, from AUD 150,000 to AUD 300,000. 2, 7
| Line | Master, AUD | Preferred, AUD |
|---|---|---|
| Annual individual membership | 82.50 | 82.50 |
| Dive injury insurance | 66.00 | 108.00 |
| Year's total | 148.50 | 190.50 |
The page states: “The above Dive Injury Insurance plan costs include applicable taxes, duties and administration charges.” Limits: up to AUD 150,000 on Master and up to AUD 300,000 on Preferred. Marsh Pty Ltd arranges the policy and AIG Australia Limited issues it. Page confirmed live on 13 September 2026.
Table view: Where a DAN World Australia Preferred year goes: two lines, AUD 190.50
| Item | Value (AUD) | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred dive injury insurance | 108 AUD | 57% |
| Membership | 82.50 AUD | 43% |
Membership is 43% of the Preferred year and 56% of the Master year (AUD 82.50 of AUD 148.50). A premium quoted on its own leaves that line out. Source: 7
Per trip, divide the year. A DAN World Australia Preferred year, AUD 190.50 with membership, comes to AUD 95.25 a trip if you take two trips, or AUD 63.50 if you take three. Set your own figure beside a single-trip quote. Price the trip itself first with liveaboard and shore diving trip costs. Then price the whole year with yearly diving costs and budget planning. 7
Do you need coverage for dive accidents, travel cancellation, or both?
Two losses, two products. Dive accident insurance pays the treatment bill after a dive. DAN's US page says its cover “Pays 100% of eligible accident medical expenses up to US$500,000.” That ceiling is Guardian's. Master and Preferred stop at US$125,000 and US$250,000. Travel protection pays when a named event stops the trip. DAN's travel protection FAQ gives three examples, in these words, and the plan document for your state holds the full list. 9, 11, 10
- Sickness, Injury and Death: “You become sick or injured, or a non-traveling family member passes away and you are unable to make the trip or must return home early.” 10
- Adverse Weather: “Your flight is canceled due to adverse weather such as hurricane or snowstorm.” 10
- Involuntary Job Loss: “After at least one year of employment you are laid off and can't go on your trip.” 10
Choose by the money at risk. When the trip is cheap to rebook, dive accident cover carries the weight. When a liveaboard is paid months ahead, price travel protection too and read its exclusions. DiveAssure's wording on supplier failure: “Unless specified this insurance does not cover anything caused directly or indirectly through bankruptcy / liquidation of any tour operator, travel agent, and transportation company or accommodation supplier unless specified within the policy.” 8

| Claim type, in the schedule's words | Deductible, USD or share of cost |
|---|---|
| Accident and Acute illness | $75 |
| Baggage Loss/Claims | $100 |
| Cancellation/Curtailment | $50 |
| Cancellation of liveaboard trips | 20% deductible applies to the cost of the liveaboard only |
Maximum Policy Benefits: USD 150,000 on Standard, USD 500,000 on Deluxe and USD 1,000,000 on Elite. DiveAssure prices every tier by quote. The document's dating code is EN/USCFRB-DT/JULY 2026.
Some sellers bundle the two at a printed price. DAN World Asia Pacific states: “Optional travel assistance packages are available with the Master and Preferred dive accident assistance packages only.” The add-on is US$175 a year with Master and US$270 with Preferred. That takes the annual bill to US$295 or US$420. 2
Table view: Two DAN World Asia Pacific tiers, with and without travel assistance, US dollars a year
| Item | Dive accident package (USD) | With travel assistance (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide Master | $120 | $295 |
| Worldwide Preferred | $150 | $420 |
The travel assistance package more than doubles the year's bill on both tiers. Set it against a separate travel protection quote for the same trips before you add it. Source: 2
How dive cover sits beside your wider cover is its own decision: see travel insurance compared to international health insurance.
Eligibility and geography: where your policy applies
Residence decides which product you can buy and which insurer stands behind the brand. DAN US sells membership and dive accident insurance to people with a “principal primary residence in the United States or Canada.” In Canada, DAN's page names a different underwriter: “DAN World Dive Accident Insurance is underwritten by Zurich Insurance Company Ltd (Canadian Branch).” 6, 9
| Product | The wording |
|---|---|
| DAN US dive accident insurance | “Includes coverage for divers age 70 and over” |
| DAN US travel protection | “Travel protection plans are not available for trips to Israel, Ukraine, all destinations in the Middle East, and other high-risk destinations.” |
| DAN World Australia dive injury insurance | “Covers diving accidents & injuries that occur outside the Commonwealth of Australia” |
| DAN World Asia Pacific packages | Ages “8-75”. Local is “Domestic”; Master and Preferred are “Worldwide”. |
| DiveAssure Dive & Travel (USA) | “You must be outside of Your home country of residence for benefits to be in effect.” Diving cover: “Any person between the ages of 8 years and having obtained age 80.” |
| DAN Europe plans | Underwritten by IDA Insurance Limited, “regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority”. |
Each line is quoted from the provider's page or policy document as read on 13 September 2026. DiveAssure's wording comes from its July 2026 description of coverage.

Read the territory line against the whole route, transit stops and side trips included. Near a named exclusion, DAN's travel protection page gives the next step. “Please contact Generali Global Assistance to see if travel protection is available for your trip.” 12
Depth limits and certification: read the diving clause
The deepest dive on your plan needs a clause that reaches it. DAN World Australia caps depth with a number, 50m on Master. DiveAssure sets no depth limit and ties cover to your certification instead. Either way, a claim for a deep dive can turn on your training records. 7, 13
| Provider | Depth wording | What a claim asks for |
|---|---|---|
| DAN World Australia | “Maximum diving depth for coverage”: “50m” on Master, “Unlimited” on Preferred | Depth Conditions, Certified Divers: “In the event of a dive injury insurance claim for a depth beyond 50m, a Member will be required to demonstrate that he/she held an appropriate certification and experience for the dive and was using appropriate breathing gas mixes and equipment during the covered dive or Repetitive Dive Series.” |
| DiveAssure, FAQ | “DiveAssure policies have no depth limit or mixed gas restrictions” | “as long as you follow the protocols and guidelines, and dive according to your certification (see list of Approved Training Agencies), your coverage will be valid.” |
| DiveAssure, policy document | “When participating in diving You must be properly certified or accompanied by a diving professional for the type of diving and depths in which they participate.” | “additional documentation may be required in support of certification, accompaniment (for non-certified) or training including copies of log books, training documents and licenses.” |
The DiveAssure policy document is its July 2026 description of coverage for the USA. The DAN World Australia page is labeled 1 February 2025.
DAN's US overview page prints no depth figure. Ask DAN, in writing, where the certificate sets the depth and gas terms for Master, Preferred and Guardian. 9
A new course for deeper diving is its own budget line. See certification costs separate from insurance.
Emergency evacuation and medical transport: who pays, who decides
On DAN US membership, the transport benefit follows the level you pay for. Regular lists “Emergency Medical Transportation & Travel Assistance Benefits” up to US$150,000. Enhanced lists up to US$500,000 and adds “Global Security Evacuation” and “Search & Rescue Coverage”. 6
| Line on DAN's table | Regular, USD | Enhanced, USD |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Individual Membership | 40 | 75 |
| Annual Family Membership | 60 | 100 |
| Emergency Medical Transportation & Travel Assistance Benefits | Up To 150,000 | Up To 500,000 |
| Global Security Evacuation | Not included | Included |
| Search & Rescue Coverage | Not included | Included |
Not included and Included stand in for the marks on DAN's own comparison table. Membership dues sit apart from dive accident insurance, which is priced by quote.
The step from Regular to Enhanced costs an individual US$35 a year: US$75 against US$40. It raises the listed transport benefit by US$350,000, from US$150,000 to US$500,000. 6
Who decides is a question for the insurer, in writing, before the trip. Get these four answers on paper.
- Who chooses the receiving hospital, and who confirms that transport is medically necessary.
- Whether the assistance line has to approve transport first, and what to do when a call has to wait.
- Which number to call from the boat, and what the operator needs from you on that call.
- How bills above the direct-payment line get paid. DAN's travel protection FAQ sets that line at “acute treatments up to $1,000.” 10
Know one benefit before anyone needs it. DAN's travel protection pays “up to $10,000 in expenses for a companion to visit you if you are traveling alone and are hospitalized for more than 7 days.” 10
Equipment loss and damage: what triggers a claim and what to ask
Read the trigger before the amount. DAN's dive accident insurance describes “Coverage for equipment such as a regulator, BCD, dive computer or fins that are unintentionally lost or damaged as a result of a covered diving accident.” The trigger is the covered diving accident. A regulator that vanishes from a checked bag falls outside that trigger and needs baggage cover. 9
Baggage cover carries its own deductible where a plan includes it: DiveAssure's schedule lists “Baggage Loss/Claims: $100”. The item and total limits sit in each plan's schedule of benefits. Ask for the figure that covers your most expensive piece. 8
- Photograph each item with its serial number, and store the receipts where you can reach them from abroad.
- Write down today's replacement price for the regulator, the computer and any camera housing.
- Ask whether the equipment limit applies per item or per claim.
- Ask whether the plan pays replacement cost or a depreciated value.
- Keep the airline's claim window in your notes beside the insurer's.
Still deciding whether to own the gear at all? Work through the equipment break-even analysis and the baggage costs of flying with your own gear first.
Annual vs trip insurance: when each makes financial sense
Every dive accident price DAN World prints is annual: US$65 to US$150 a year in US dollars, and AUD 66 or AUD 108 in Australia. An annual plan pays off when every trip fits its rules, and each insurer writes its own. DiveAssure's policy document prints them in numbers. 1, 2, 7, 8
- “Maximum trip length for single-trip programs is 180 days.” 8
- “Maximum trip length for multi-trip program is 42 consecutive days (per trip).” 8
- “You should not take out this policy if You are planning to live in a fixed location outside (living abroad versus traveling) Your country of residence.” 8
Several trips abroad, each inside the per-trip cap
Price the annual plan first, then add up the year's single-trip quotes. When the annual premium comes in under that total and its wording covers every trip, the annual plan is the cheaper buy.
One long trip
Set the trip's length against both caps above. A journey longer than the multi-trip cap belongs on a single-trip quote. 8
A move abroad
The living-abroad clause above rules DiveAssure's policy out for a fixed base in another country. Ask insurers in your new home about cover for residents.
A year of mixed trips
List every dive trip and every other activity you plan. Check which of them each plan names, then compare the annual premium with the trip quotes.
How to compare policies and prepare for claims
Put your quotes on one sheet and compare the same event across all of them. The premium is one row. The limit and the deductible for that event come next. Then the depth line, the territory line and the claim deadline.
Ask for the issued certificate
The summary points the way and the certificate governs. Get the document for your country of residence before you pay. 9
Describe the diving you plan
Depths, gases, night and wreck dives, and any work as a guide or instructor. Ask the insurer to name the clause that covers each one.
Line up one event across every quote
For a dive accident, compare the limit, the deductible and the cash you front. For a canceled liveaboard, compare the covered events and the deductible on the liveaboard cost. 8
Set up the claim before you fly
Save the emergency number and the policy number in your phone and with your buddy. Note the deadline too: DAN's travel protection says “Claims must be submitted within one year after a covered loss.” 10
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between DAN membership and dive accident insurance?
They are two purchases. DAN's US page sets the order: “Join DAN first, then add your insurance.” DAN Europe's membership is EUR 27.50 a year. That is US$31.88 at the European Central Bank's rate of US$1.1592 per euro on 11 September 2026. Its page says “It doesn't include an insurance cover.” 9, 14, 15
Does a DAN family membership insure the whole family?
No. Family membership costs US$60 a year on Regular and US$100 on Enhanced. The insurance is bought person by person, in DAN's words: “dive accident insurance must be purchased separately for each member.” 6
What is the difference between a lifetime limit and a per-claim limit?
A lifetime limit is one total for the life of the policy. A per-claim limit applies to each claim. DAN's comparison says “The Master plan covers up to $125,000 for dive accidents, which is the total limit over the life of the policy.” On the other two plans: “Preferred covers up to $250,000 per claim, and Guardian covers up to $500,000 per claim.” 11
Does dive insurance cover a problem I knew about before I bought it?
Not under DiveAssure's wording. Its policy reads: “The Insurer shall not be liable for claims where at the time of taking out this insurance and/or prior to booking each separate trip: You were aware of any medical condition or set of circumstances, which could reasonably be expected to give rise to a claim.” Buy before anything has happened, and ask the insurer whether cover can start once a trip is under way. 8
Will my insurance cover diving with a guide or diving professionally?
Guided diving and paid work are separate questions. DiveAssure's wording is “properly certified or accompanied by a diving professional for the type of diving and depths in which they participate.” For work as a guide or instructor, DAN Europe sells Pro plans. Their liability line reads: “Diving professionals are offered a 4.000.000€ cover for third-party liability.” 8, 4
Does dive accident insurance cover surfing or kayaking on the same trip?
On DAN's US range, one plan names them: “The Guardian plan also covers other water sports such as surfing and kayaking.” For other accidents, DAN's comparison says “Preferred offers $10,000 in coverage for non-dive accidents with a $250 deductible, while Guardian covers up to $30,000 with no deductible.” 11
Is scuba diving insurance the same as regular travel insurance?
DAN sells them as separate products from separate insurers. For residents of US states and DC, National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, Pa. underwrites the dive accident insurance. Generali U.S. Branch underwrites the travel protection. DiveAssure's Dive & Travel schedule carries both, with separate deductibles for accidents, baggage and cancellation. 9, 12, 8
