September 2026 prices from US dive shops for each stage of an Open Water course, from the eLearning to the last training dive, plus the fees that sit between them.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • A complete Open Water course costs $350 to $1,176.44 at the US shops priced here, from The Dive Shop's course in Bountiful, Utah, books and rental gear included, to Undersea Divers' itemized bill in Danvers, Massachusetts. 1, 2, 3
  • Price each stage as its own line. At Undersea Divers, eLearning is $251, the pool weekend $499 and the four ocean dives $385, plus a $39 logbook. 3
  • A referral splits the course between two shops. Finish within 12 months of your last training session; in Key Largo the open-water dives cost $275 at Rainbow Reef and $385 plus tax at Sea Dwellers. 4, 5, 6
  • Ask who issues the card. PADI charges the issuing shop a $95 processing fee, and Sea Dwellers adds it to your bill only when it certifies you. 6
  • Book the flight for at least 18 hours after your last dive. That is the minimum Divers Alert Network (DAN) recommends after multiple dives or multiple days of diving. 7

Prices are for the entry-level Open Water course at US dive shops, in US dollars, as each shop published them on 13 September 2026.

How much does a completed certification cost?

Your course ends in open water: four dives in a place like the kelp forests of Monterey Bay, or Blue Lake near Wendover. 4, 8, 1 Before them come study, by eLearning or in a classroom, and skills practice in a pool. 4 Each stage has its own price, and every shop draws the lines between stages in its own place.

On 13 September 2026, the complete course costs $350 at The Dive Shop in Bountiful, Utah, and $1,176.44 at Undersea Divers in Danvers, Massachusetts. 1, 2, 3 The top price is more than three times the bottom one. 1, 3

Read each bar with what it covers. Undersea's includes its $39 logbook and $2.44 tax line. Aquatic Adventures in Springfield, Virginia, sells both Aquatic courses; the pool-and-lake figure adds the $499 classroom and pool weekend to the $475 lake dives, before the required logbook. The Dive Shop certifies through SDI; the rest are PADI courses. Source: 3, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 1, 2

The gap comes from what each shop bundles and where the dives happen. Olympus Dive Center in Morehead City, North Carolina, puts boat dives inside its price; at The Dive Shop, transport, food and lodging for the open-water dives are yours to add. 12, 1 Undersea Divers bills every stage on its own line, and the next section takes that bill apart. 3

Turn three stages into separate budget lines

Write the course as three lines before you compare anything. PADI's Open Water course runs in three stages: knowledge development, skills in a pool and four open-water dives with an instructor. 4 PADI sells the eLearning for the first stage on its own store, as a separate purchase, for $251. 15, 16

Undersea Divers prints the clearest bill of the shops here, with one line per stage and a separate tax line. 3 Aquatic Adventures in Springfield, Virginia, builds the eLearning into its $499 pool weekend, so its first two stages cost $251 less than the $750 Undersea charges for the same two. 9, 3

Gear included, item by item

Olympus Dive Center supplies the regulator, tank, BCD (the inflatable vest that holds the tank and controls buoyancy), wetsuit and dive computer. You bring the mask, fins, boots, snorkel and gloves. 12 In Key Largo, Rainbow Reef Dive Center publishes a daily rate for every piece. 5

Two shops on opposite coasts show how a blank changes the answer. Aquarius in Monterey lists $651 before eLearning, and Olympus in Morehead City starts its eLearning course at $735. 8, 12 If the Aquarius eLearning add-on comes to more than $84, the Olympus course costs less. 8, 12 For scale, PADI's own store sells Open Water eLearning for $251. 16

PADI tells students to confirm the full price to finish, including certification fees, rental gear and boat dives. 4 Ask each shop for these lines in writing:

  • Training for all three stages, and which stages the price covers 4
  • The certification card, and which shop issues it 6
  • Rental gear by item, and the personal gear you bring 12, 5
  • Boat dives and any site admission, such as the fee at the Crater in Midway, Utah 1
  • The logbook, and any tax line 3
  • Conditions on the price, such as group size or a gear purchase 17, 5

Mark every unanswered line as open and chase the largest first. For dive trips after the course, see how to compare what a dive package includes.

Train near home or on a dive trip

Local training fits the course into weekends near home. Undersea Divers runs its cold-water ocean dives from May to October. 3 Aquatic Adventures dives at Lake Phoenix in Rawlings, Virginia, with entry fees and air fills in its $475 price. 10

Local water sets the gear list. Undersea's cold-water students need a mask, fins, snorkel, hood, boots and gloves, sold together as a $349 package. 3 Its warm-water referral students need just the mask, fins and snorkel. 3

Destination training puts the four dives inside a trip, on the trip's calendar. PADI's referral guide says South America and Southeast Asia tend to cost less for learning to dive than North America, the Caribbean or Australia. 4

Two budgets answer two different questions. If the vacation happens anyway, compare the course fees and the extra diving days. If the course is the reason for the trip, put the flight and the nights on its bill. Our guides to learning to dive at home or abroad and a Koh Tao certification trip price the whole journey.

What does a referral arrangement actually cost?

A referral lets you study and train in the pool at home, then finish on vacation. You take the four open-water dives with a second shop, within 12 months of your last training session. 4 PADI puts that finish at a day and a half. 4

Each half carries its own price. Undersea Divers totals eLearning and the pool weekend at $750 for referral students. 3 Divepoint Scuba in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, charges $300 for class and pool, $200 for the open-water dives alone and $465 for the whole course, so its halves add up to $500, or $35 more than the complete course. 14, 13

Key Largo shops publish their finishing prices, and at Sea Dwellers the total turns on which shop issues your card. 5, 17, 6

Sea Dwellers issues the card$750$385 + $95 + tax$1,230 + tax

Flights, lodging, meals, personal gear and the logbook are extra. Undersea Divers' all-local course costs $1,135 before its $39 logbook and $2.44 tax line, and $1,176.44 with them. 3

Before the logbook and tax, the split and the all-local course land close together: $1,025 to $1,230 against $1,135 for Undersea's eLearning, pool weekend and Massachusetts ocean dives. 3, 5, 6 The split changes where you dive, and the flight and the nights decide what that change costs.

  1. Finish the home half and collect the paperwork

Complete eLearning and the pool, and leave with referral paperwork from your original shop. 4, 6

  2. Get the finishing price in writing

Aquatic Adventures leaves the finishing price to the resort or shop that runs the dives, and PADI tells students to confirm it in advance, with certification fees, rental gear and boat dives included. 10, 4

  3. Pack the documents the finishing shop asks for

Sea Dwellers wants the referral paperwork and a medical questionnaire, both completed within the past 12 months, plus a signed logbook showing your pool sessions and a timing device. 6

  4. Dive the four open-water dives

Island Ventures runs its referral over a day and a half; Sea Dwellers runs four dives over two days. 17, 6

  5. Choose who issues the card

Sea Dwellers adds PADI's $95 processing fee when it certifies you. If your home shop issues the card, ask what it charges before you leave. 6

What if you need extra instruction?

Put a second try in the budget before the first one starts. Sea Dwellers offers referral students a refresher pool session before their open-water dives, at $120 plus tax in a group capped at 8 students. 6 It also sells its checkout dives a day at a time, two dives for $255 plus tax. 6

Those two prices make the reserve. One refresher session and one more day of checkout dives come to $375 plus tax. 6 Keep it apart from the course bill. If the skills click on the first try, the money goes home with you.

Time between stages has a limit too. A referral expires 12 months after your last training session. 4 If a long gap leaves the skills rusty, our dive refresher course budget prices the tune-up.

Teaching quality and group size: how they affect cost

Instructor time is what the price buys. Olympus Dive Center limits its Open Water classes to between 4 and 6 students. 12 Private lessons there start at $785, or $100 more than the group course's starting price of $685. 12

Group size moves referral prices as well. Island Ventures bases its referral price on a party of four and asks smaller or larger groups to call for a firm quote. 17 Younger students cost more at Aquatic Adventures, which adds $100 for ages 10 to 11 because of increased instructor requirements. 9

Put these questions to every shop before you compare the prices:

  • How many students share each instructor in the pool, and in open water?
  • Does the same instructor teach every stage?
  • What does a private session cost if a skill needs more time?
  • Who takes over if your instructor changes, and do the dates hold?

How soon can you fly after the last dive?

Count the hours from your last dive, then book the flight. Divers Alert Network recommends a minimum surface interval of 12 hours before flying after a single no-decompression dive. 7 After multiple dives a day, or multiple days of diving, the minimum is 18 hours. 7

Every finish in this guide involves multiple dives. Sea Dwellers spreads its four checkout dives over two days, and Island Ventures runs its referral over a day and a half. 6, 17

The money sits in the last night. Course prices here cover the diving, so the room after the final dive, dinner and the airport transfer come from your own budget. A spare night lets a weather day move a dive and leaves the flight in place. If you fly with the mask and fins you trained in, diving with your own gear prices the baggage.

Read cancellation terms before you commit

The deposit is small; the late change is where the money goes. The Dive Shop takes a $35 deposit and Divepoint Scuba takes $75. 1, 13 A late change costs $35 at The Dive Shop, $225 at Aquarius and half the tuition at Undersea Divers. 1, 8, 3

Read the dates against your calendar. The free change window at Aquarius closes 30 days before the course starts, so a course tied to a trip needs its dates fixed 30 days out. 8 Pay with a card that leaves a receipt, and keep the written quote, the inclusion list and the shop's emailed answers together.

Once you're certified, the spending turns into dive trips, boats and rentals. What a year of diving costs picks up from there.

Frequently asked questions

How long does scuba certification take?

The pool stage at Undersea Divers is a two-day weekend, and its four ocean dives take two more days. 3 Aquatic Adventures fits all the in-water training into one 3-day weekend at Lake Phoenix for $850, after a required class at the shop earlier that week. 11 On a referral, PADI puts the open-water finish at a day and a half. 4

Do I have to certify through PADI?

Other agencies certify Open Water divers too. The Dive Shop in Bountiful, Utah, teaches its course through Scuba Diving International (SDI) for $350. 1, 2 Rainbow Reef in Key Largo finishes referrals from NAUI, SSI, PDIC and other agencies under the agency you started with, and adds a PADI card if you also pass the PADI final exam. 5 Ask which agency's card you will receive before you compare prices.

Do I need to own my own equipment for certification?

You need personal gear, and you choose whether to buy or rent it. Aquatic Adventures asks students to bring or rent a mask, fins, snorkel and boots, and supplies the wetsuit, BCD, regulator, weights and tanks. 9 Rainbow Reef's referral price includes the BCD and regulator, and you bring or rent the mask, fins and snorkel. 5

What does the certification card cost?

PADI charges the shop that issues your certification a $95 processing fee, known as the PIC fee. 6 Rainbow Reef includes the card in its $275 referral price, and Divepoint Scuba says its $465 complete certification ends with your PADI card, which never expires. 5, 13 Ask your home shop whether its price covers the card when it issues it.

Can buying gear lower the course price?

At Rainbow Reef in Key Largo, yes: the $275 referral course drops to $50 with one of its dive gear packages, and it is free with a larger gear purchase. 5 Undersea Divers prices its cold-water gear package at $349 against a stated $494 retail value, and takes 10% off a mask, fins and snorkel for warm-water referral students. 3 Price the gear on its own first, so the bundle earns its place.

What medical or age requirements does the course have?

Olympus Dive Center takes students from age 12 in its standard course and asks 10- and 11-year-olds to call about its Private Open Water course. 12 Divepoint Scuba enrolls students from age 10. 13 For a referral finish, Sea Dwellers asks for a medical questionnaire completed within the past 12 months. 6 Ask your shop for its medical form before you pay, and take any questions about fitness to dive to a doctor.

Is PADI eLearning cheaper through a dive shop?

PADI's own store sells Open Water eLearning for $251. 16 Aquatic Adventures builds it into its $499 pool weekend and values it at $236, which is $15 below PADI's price. 9, 16 Undersea Divers passes the $251 through and charges a $117 fee if your eLearning names a different shop, so register the shop you will train with before you start. 3
