Eight dive centres' own September 2026 prices, from a $50 pool evening to a $299 day with two guided reef dives, and the six questions that tell you which quote is the cheap one.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Eight dive centres publish refresher prices from $50 to $299 a person. The spread is scope, not geography: $50 buys an online class and one pool evening in Salt Lake City, $299 buys a Key Largo day with two guided reef dives. 1, 2
  • PADI's ReActivate online program is $85 on PADI's own store, $69 at Atlantic Edge, and folded into Olympus Diving's $175 starting price. Ask each shop which of those you are paying for. 3, 4, 5
  • The online purchase is half a refresher. PADI's store states that a ReActivated card takes in-water practice with a dive professional. 3
  • In Key Largo, $249 a person plus tax buys the refresher and two guided reef dives in one day. Set it against a $50 to $175 pool session at home plus the reef dives you would pay for on the trip anyway. 2, 1, 5
  • Leave at least 12 hours between a single no-decompression dive and a flight, and at least 18 after several. Book the refresher at the front of the trip. 6

This page prices refresher training for a diver who is already certified. Whether you are fit to dive is a question for you and a physician, and the medical forms described below are where that conversation starts.

What's the real refresher cost, not just the course code?

Your last dive was three summers ago and the boat is booked for October. Somewhere between now and then sits an evening in a pool with an instructor, and a price that shops write eight different ways. Two of them: $50 at The Dive Shop in Salt Lake City, $299 for a solo day at Scuba-Fun in Key Largo. Both pages call it a refresher. 1, 2

The gap is scope. The $50 covers online class instruction and one evening in the pool, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The $299 covers a morning pool review, two guided afternoon reef dives, all the rental gear, the boat charter and the site entry fees. One is a skills tune-up. The other is a day of diving with an instructor beside you. 1, 2

So price the whole return and compare like with like. The table sets each centre's own figure against what that figure covers. If a new certification is the other option on your list, how certification training costs work runs the same arithmetic for an Open Water course.

Each figure is the shop's own published price on the research date and changes without notice. Tax appears where the shop states it: Sea Dwellers and Scuba-Fun add sales tax, Atlantic Edge adds Maryland's 10% amusement tax to its two rental kits and leaves the course fee untaxed, and the other five print no tax line. Atlantic Edge, Diver Dan's and Scuba-Fun leave mask, snorkel and fins out of these prices; ask the remaining centres whether theirs include them. Scuba-Fun's page carries its prices as of June 2026 and still showed them on 22 September 2026. 7, 2, 4

The two orange bars are the only prices here that include open-water dives. Every other bar buys pool time. Olympus Diving's $175 is a starting price with the ReActivate code inside it; the six cheaper bars leave that code out, at $69 to $85 where the shop sells it. Source: 1, 8, 7, 4, 9, 10, 5, 2

Is online learning the whole refresher, or do you need water time too?

The online program is the cheap half, and the pool is where a refresher finishes. PADI's own store states that a ReActivated card takes in-water practice with a dive professional. Its checklist, last updated on 30 March 2026, splits the course in two: knowledge development you complete online, and an in-water session to review your skills. 3, 11

PADI prices the online half at $85 on its own store, the figure shown there on 13 September 2026. SSI takes a different shape. Its Scuba Skills Update sells materials as a Digital Kit, and SSI states that a kit is training materials only, with the training centre charging tuition, water time and certification on top, at prices that vary by location. 3, 12

On 20 September 2026, SSI's site showed that kit at a UK price of GBP 4.15 including tax. At the Federal Reserve's reference rate of 1.3524 US dollars per pound on 11 September 2026, GBP 4.15 works out to about $5.61. Materials are the small line. The instructor's hours are the large one. 12, 13

SSI names four things a centre bills, singly or as a package. Copy them into your own sheet and ask every shop to fill them in. One number that hides all four tells you very little. 12

  • Training materials, or the digital kit that replaces them.
  • Tuition for academics and in-water training, which is the instructor's hours.
  • Open-water training dives, where the course includes any.
  • Certification, which is the card and the record that comes with it.

What actually happens during the booked appointment?

A two-hour booking is rarely two hours underwater. It holds the drive to the pool, the forms, the gear fitting and the briefing. PADI puts ReActivate at under a day: a few hours online, then about half a day in the water. SSI suggests 2 to 3 hours for its Scuba Skills Update and states there is no fixed course duration, so a diver spends the time where the skills need it. 11, 12

Shops schedule it around work. The Dive Shop runs its pool evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Ocean Enterprises books 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for its three-hour Scuba Review. Undersea Divers runs 1.5 hours. Ask which of those minutes you spend in the water. 1, 8, 10

Agency figures come from PADI's and SSI's own course pages; the shop rows come from each shop's published schedule. A session that runs long at SSI's centres is the agency's stated design rather than an overrun. 12

Tell the shop three things before it quotes: the date of your last dive, how many dives you had logged before the break, and what you plan to dive next. Scuba-Fun writes its own rule from exactly that. Nothing required inside 12 months. A personal dive guide on the first trip between one and two years. A refresher required past two years. 2

Price the equipment you will actually use

Full gear means a different bundle at every counter. Atlantic Edge's $149 course includes tanks and weights and rents the rest in two kits at $49 each: a personal pool set of mask, snorkel and fins, and a refresher kit of BCD, regulator and shorty wetsuit. Maryland's 10% amusement tax lands on those two rental lines and leaves the course fee alone. 4

Diver Dan's runs the other way. Its refresher includes a two-piece 7 mm wetsuit, hood, regulator with dive computer, weight belt and weights, BCD and aluminium tanks, leaving mask, snorkel, fins, boots and gloves to you. Scuba-Fun includes all rental gear in its day and rents mask, snorkel and fins for $15. 9, 2

The four items a pool session needs, BCD at $12, regulator at $15, wetsuit at $12 and the mask-fins-snorkel set at $10, come to $49 a day on this list, against $35 for the full package. PADI's own gear guide puts a complete set with a wetsuit at about $60 a day or $100 a weekend, so Rainbow Reef's $35 package comes in about $25 under PADI's day figure. 16, 17

Gear that slept in a box needs a look before it needs a budget. SCUBAPRO recommends its regulators be serviced by a trained technician every 24 months or 100 dives, so a SCUBAPRO regulator stored for more than two years is due. Southern Indiana Scuba's posted list charges $40 for a first stage, $40 for each second stage and $30 plus parts for a computer, with $4.25 of shop supplies per regulator item. 18, 19

Service prices are one shop's posted list, read 13 September 2026; new prices are the ranges in PADI's gear guide. 19, 17

A full regulator system is one first stage plus a primary and an octopus second stage. Servicing wins on those numbers. Then leave it out of the shop-against-shop comparison, because you owe it either way. 19, 17

If the answer keeps coming back to replacement instead, buying vs renting scuba gear runs the break-even across a season of diving.

What does a complete local refresher budget look like?

Diver Dan's prints its refresher the way a budget should be written. The course is a $50 store registration fee plus a $100 instructor fee, which is $150 for two weeknight sessions, one in the classroom and one in the pool, rental gear included. Add the PADI ReActivate online program at $85 and the total is $235. 9, 3

Both columns buy online or classroom learning, an instructor-led pool session, and a BCD, regulator, wetsuit, tanks and weights; only Atlantic Edge's column also rents mask, snorkel and fins. Diver Dan's includes its rentals and prints no tax line; Atlantic Edge rents gear in two kits and prints Maryland's tax on them. Mask, snorkel and fins stay with you at Diver Dan's and arrive in the $49 pool set at Atlantic Edge. Neither total holds transport or a second session. 9, 4

Atlantic Edge lands higher because its gear rents by the kit and Maryland taxes those kits. Its $149 course plus two $49 kits plus $9.80 of tax makes a gear-inclusive course of $256.80. Add its discounted $69 online program and the total is $325.80, which is $90.80 above Diver Dan's. Bring your own mask, snorkel and fins, as Diver Dan's requires, and Atlantic Edge comes to $271.90, $36.90 above Diver Dan's. 4

Watch when the money leaves, as well as how much. The Dive Shop's online class codes lock once issued, while the pool evening still moves. Undersea Divers takes payment that is non-refundable from the start. A low total with an early locked payment gives you less room than a higher total you can reschedule around work. 1, 10

Should you refresh at home or at your dive destination?

Key Largo answers this twice, on the same reef. Sea Dwellers sells an optional pool session to its referral students at $120 plus tax, capped at 8 students. Scuba-Fun sells a full day at $249 plus tax a person for two or more, or $299 plus tax for a solo student with one-on-one instruction. 7, 2

Scuba-Fun's day opens with a pool review and puts two guided afternoon reef dives after it, with all rental gear, the boat charter and the site entry fees inside the price. Tax, lunch and the tip sit outside it. 2

Of the two, Scuba-Fun's day is the one its own page sells to certified divers; Sea Dwellers' $120 session belongs to its referral course. 2, 7

At home the pool sessions in the first table run $50 to $175 and end at the pool. The destination day adds the reef: two guided dives, the boat charter and the site entry fees. 1, 5, 2

Home prices come from the first table and carry its tax notes. Scuba-Fun rents mask, snorkel and fins for $15 on top of either day. 2

A refresher at home buys something else too: time. A leaking regulator found in a pool in September leaves weeks to fix it. The same leak found on a Key Largo morning competes with the boat schedule. Weigh that against the flight, because carrying your own gear adds bags, and baggage costs and gear transport prices that side of it.

Either way, the refresher is one line in a bigger year. The annual diving budget page sets it beside the trips, the gear and the insurance.

What about medical forms and flying after diving?

Two pieces of paper travel with every refresher, and one of them can add a doctor's appointment. SSI's required-forms list for the Scuba Skills Update includes a Diver Medical Statement and Questionnaire, or a physician's approval to dive where that is required. Its liability release carries one stated jurisdictional exception, marked as not applicable within the European Union. 12

The form has a name. The RSTC Medical Statement, the participant record used across the agencies of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council, is what an instructor hands a diver whose answers call for a physician's review. It asks about heart disease, a current cold or congestion, epilepsy, asthma and blood pressure. Fill it in early, because one yes can mean a clinic visit before a non-refundable booking. 20

A refresher that puts you in open water on the last morning reshapes the flight, the hotel night or both. Book it at the front of the trip. If the paperwork sends you to a clinic, check what your scuba insurance already covers before you pay for anything twice.

Send one specification to every centre

Two shops compare only when they answered the same question. Write the brief once and send it to every centre on your list.

  1. State your diving

Your certifying agency and level, roughly how many dives you have logged, the date of your last one, and what you plan to dive next. Scuba-Fun's rule turns on that last date: a refresher is required past two years. 2

  2. Ask for the four line items

Materials or digital kit, tuition for academics and in-water training, open-water dives, and certification. SSI names those four, so ask every shop to price them whether or not it bundles them. 12

  3. Name the gear you need

Sizes, exposure protection and a dive computer, itemized. Atlantic Edge rents a pool set and a refresher kit at $49 each plus 10% Maryland tax, Diver Dan's includes its rentals, and Scuba-Fun rents mask, snorkel and fins at $15. 4, 9, 2

  4. Price the second session before you need it

Ask what another pool evening costs with gear and facility access, and put it in the quote as a separate conditional line. SSI's course carries no fixed duration, so a second session is a normal line to price. 12

  5. Get the change terms in writing

Ask when the online code locks, when the tuition locks, and what a weather cancellation does to any boat add-on. Those three deadlines differ by shop and by product.

  6. Ask about the affiliation fee

Undersea Divers charges $40 if you buy the ReActivate code without naming it as your affiliated dive shop. Buy the code through the shop that will run your pool session, or ask first. 10

Ask every other centre on your list for the same three lines in writing before you pay. 10

When two answers come back, read the service before the price. Scuba-Fun's $299 solo day and $249 shared day buy different attention for a $50 difference, and either can be the right call. If a package rather than a course is the next question, how to compare dive packages takes it from here. 2

Frequently asked questions

Is the online refresher price the whole course price?

It is one line of it. PADI's ReActivate online program was $85 on PADI's own store on 13 September 2026, and the same page states that a ReActivated card takes in-water practice with a dive professional on top. Shops price that water time from $50 to $299. 3, 1, 2

Does time away mean I have to certify again?

No. Scuba-Fun states in its own FAQ that PADI, SDI, SSI and NAUI certifications never expire, and that a refresher rebuilds muscle memory and confidence instead of re-certifying. Its own rule runs on time away: nothing required inside 12 months, a personal dive guide between one and two years, and a refresher past two years. 2

How long does a scuba refresher actually take?

PADI puts it at under a day; SSI suggests 2 to 3 hours with no fixed duration. Shops schedule 1.5 hours at Undersea Divers, three hours at Ocean Enterprises and at The Dive Shop, and a full day at Scuba-Fun. 11, 12, 10, 8, 1, 2

Is a private refresher worth the extra money?

Price the difference first. Scuba-Fun charges $299 for a solo student with one-on-one instruction against $249 a person for two or more, a $50 premium. Where shops publish class sizes, Olympus Diving caps its ReActivate at 4 to 6 students. 2, 5

Should I buy equipment before the refresher?

Rent for the session and decide afterwards. PADI's gear guide puts a full rental set with a wetsuit at about $60 a day or $100 a weekend, against $650 to $800 for a new regulator and $250 to $400 for a dive computer. A refresher is the cheapest place to learn what fits you. 17

Can I book the refresher the day before I fly home?

Put it at the front of the trip instead. DAN's minimums are 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive and 18 after several. A refresher on the last morning puts the flight home behind that clock. 6

How deep does a refresher session go?

Shallow, by design. SSI sets a maximum training depth of 5 m / 15 ft for its Scuba Skills Update, which is confined-water depth. PADI sets a minimum age of 10 for ReActivate; Olympus Diving sets 12 for its own session and caps it at 4 to 6 students. Depth comes back on the open-water dives shops sell alongside the session, like Scuba-Fun's two guided reef dives. 12, 11, 5, 2

What is included in a refresher price?

Water time and an instructor, then it splits. Olympus Diving's $175 starting price includes instruction, the ReActivate code, pool, gear and certification fees. Atlantic Edge's $149 includes tanks and weights and rents the rest. Undersea Divers' $160 buys a 1.5-hour pool session and leaves the $85 online program to PADI.com. 5, 4, 10
