What does the Monteverde to La Fortuna transfer cost?
Four named operators, their own published prices, read on 25 September 2026.
The road out of Santa Elena starts dropping and does not stop for three and a half hours. Monteverde sits in cloud at roughly 1,400 metres. La Fortuna sits at 253 metres under a volcano. Between them is Costa Rica's largest lake, and a spread of $74.35 a head between the cheapest and dearest way across it for a party of four. 6, 7, 8, 1, 9
Four named operators sell this leg. Two of them, TBT Costa Rica and Aventuras El Lago, publish identical fares: $33 per person on the 8 a.m. shared departure, $40 on the 2 p.m., and $260 private for up to five people, with taxes and fees already inside the price. 1, 2
Two Weeks in Costa Rica sells four products on this route and quotes every one before 13% tax. Easy Ride charges $45 per person for its taxi-boat-taxi, hotel to hotel, ground transport and boat included, in about three hours. 3, 9, 4, 10
| Option | Operator | Published price (USD) | With 13% tax (USD) | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared jeep-boat-jeep, 8 a.m. | TBT Costa Rica / Aventuras El Lago | 33 per person | included | 3.5 to 4 h |
| Shared jeep-boat-jeep, 2 p.m. | TBT Costa Rica / Aventuras El Lago | 40 per person | included | 3.5 to 4 h |
| Shared taxi-boat-taxi | Easy Ride Costa Rica | 45 per person | not stated | about 3 h |
| Shared shuttle-boat-shuttle, 7:30 a.m. | Two Weeks in Costa Rica | 45 per person | 50.85 per person | about 3.5 h |
| Private jeep-boat-jeep, up to 5 | TBT Costa Rica / Aventuras El Lago | 260 per group | included | about 3.5 h |
| Private shuttle-boat-shuttle, 1 to 20 | Two Weeks in Costa Rica | 380 per group | 429.40 per group | about 3.5 h |
| Private road-only van, 1 to 8 | Two Weeks in Costa Rica | 229 per group | 258.77 per group | about 3.5 h |
| Private road-only van, 9 to 16 | Two Weeks in Costa Rica | 396 per group | 447.48 per group | about 3.5 h |
One way, per person or per group as marked. TBT Costa Rica and Aventuras El Lago state that taxes and fees sit inside their price and charge $28 for each passenger above five on the private service. Two Weeks in Costa Rica prices before 13% tax; the tax column is that arithmetic. Easy Ride's price list names no tax treatment. From 15 December 2026 the road-only van rises from $229 to $256 for 1 to 8 passengers, and from $396 to $435 for 9 to 16 - $289.28 and $491.55 once 13% tax is added.

The private van and private boat figures divide one group price by four. Cheapest and dearest ride the same road, cross the same lake, and take about the same 3.5 hours. What separates them is who else is in the vehicle. Source: 1, 2, 10, 3, 4, 9
Every fare on this page is published in US dollars. Budgeting in colones instead, the Banco Central de Costa Rica's MONEX weighted average on 24 September 2026 was 452.82 colones to the dollar, which puts the $33 shared fare at about 14,943 colones. 11
Is the jeep-boat-jeep worth it?
The boat is the reason to book this one, and it is not a shortcut. Two Weeks in Costa Rica puts its shared boat crossing and its road-only van at about 3.5 hours door to door. The same operator's driving guide gives 3.5 hours for the drive around the lake. Three routes, one clock. 3, 4, 5
What changes is the middle hour. A van runs 20 to 30 minutes from La Fortuna to the Lake Arenal dam - Aventuras El Lago says 20, Two Weeks in Costa Rica allows 30. Passengers walk down a steep path to a covered boat holding 30 to 50 people, canopy overhead, plastic windows that roll down. The crossing takes about an hour. Then a van for the last leg. 3, 2

The lake is a working one. At 85 square kilometres it is the largest in Costa Rica, about 100 metres deep at its deepest. It reached that size in 1979, when the Sangregado Dam went in and put the old towns of Arenal and Tronadora under water. The hydroelectric project here once carried around 70% of the country's electricity and now carries closer to 17%. 8
North of the lake, at San Rafael de Guatuso, the Maleku people hold a demarcated territory of 2,993.5 hectares across three palenques: El Sol, Margarita and Tonjibe. Costa Rica's Supreme Court recognised their full territorial rights over that 1976 demarcation in a 1999 ruling, after the boundary had been illegally cut. Neither the boat route nor the road route passes through it. 13
The boat is also not a premium. No operator on this route sells a shared road-only seat: skip the water and you are buying a private van at $258.77 or driving yourself. Four people pay $132 for the 8 a.m. crossing against $258.77 for the van. The cheap option and the good one are the same option. 1, 2, 4
How long does Monteverde to La Fortuna take?
About 3.5 to 4 hours whichever option you book. The order of the legs changes with the direction.
Going this way, the long leg comes first. Aventuras El Lago puts the road to the lake at about 1 hour 45 minutes from Monteverde and about 20 minutes from La Fortuna. Monteverde sits far back from the shore. Leave at 8 a.m. and you are still in the hills at half past nine. 2
- 01Santa Elena and Monteverde0 nights
Hotel pickup at 8 a.m. From this side the descent to the lake is the slow leg, about 1 hour 45 minutes of curves.
→ Jeep or van to the shore of Lake Arenal - 02Lake Arenal0 nights
A covered boat holding 30 to 50 passengers crosses in about an hour, with luggage loaded on board.
→ Boat across to the Lake Arenal dam side - 03La Fortuna0 nights
About 20 to 30 minutes from the water into town, then door to door at your hotel. Total 3.5 to 4 hours.
→ Jeep or van to your accommodation
With less time: In a hurry or travelling at an odd hour, the same two operators run a private crossing any time from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at $260 for up to five passengers.
The 2 p.m. shared departure lands in La Fortuna between roughly half past five and six, on the operators' own 3.5 to 4 hour range. That is the end of the daylight. Anyone driving on afterwards, or checking in somewhere outside town, should take the morning. 1, 2
Driving it yourself around Lake Arenal
The self-drive route is the shuttle route without the boat. Route 142 runs all the way around Lake Arenal through the town of Nuevo Arenal, paved, about 1.5 hours. At Tilarán it joins Route 145 and then 606: paved out of town, gravel and dirt for a stretch, paved again near Santa Elena, another 1.5 hours. 5

- Fuel is scarce on this road. Along the whole route there are stations in Nuevo Arenal and Tilarán, then nothing until Santa Elena. Fill the tank before you leave either end. 5
- Daylight only. The operator's own advice puts the window at roughly 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are no guardrails, and rain or fog takes the view away. 5
- A 4x4 earns its rental in the rains. Route 145 out of Tilarán is gravel and well travelled. From May to November, expect mud and ruts on it. 5
- The climb is the whole road. La Fortuna sits at 253 metres, Monteverde at roughly 1,330 to 1,400. That is 1,077 to 1,147 vertical metres in three and a half hours, which is why the curves never let up. 7, 6
One-way rental costs more at the Monteverde end. Vamos Rent-A-Car's published table charges $140 to deliver or collect a car in Monteverde against $95 in Arenal or La Fortuna. That is $45 for the same service in two towns four hours apart. Plan the handover where it is cheaper. 14
| Destination | One-way delivery fee (USD) |
|---|---|
| Arenal / La Fortuna | 95 |
| Monteverde | 140 |
Charged per delivery or collection, one way, measured from the nearest Vamos office and added to the daily rental rate. The fee is the same whether the car arrives or leaves.
At what group size does private get cheaper?
Eight, and then by $5.23. Below that the $33 shared departure wins; above it, private buys privacy rather than savings.
Against the $50.85 shared fare, six people do better in the van - $258.77 with tax against $305.10. Against the $33 departure, that same van does not pay until eight. Two Weeks in Costa Rica prices its private road-only van at $229 for one to eight passengers, or $258.77 with 13% tax. Six shared shuttle-boat seats at $45 plus tax come to $305.10. The van saves $46.33 and keeps everyone in one vehicle. 4, 3
| Party size | Shared jeep-boat-jeep at 33 (USD) | Shared shuttle-boat-shuttle at 50.85 (USD) | Private road-only van (USD) | Private shuttle-boat-shuttle (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 66.00 | 101.70 | 258.77 | 429.40 |
| 4 | 132.00 | 203.40 | 258.77 | 429.40 |
| 6 | 198.00 | 305.10 | 258.77 | 429.40 |
| 8 | 264.00 | 406.80 | 258.77 | 429.40 |
| 9 | 297.00 | 457.65 | 447.48 | 429.40 |
The $33 column is TBT Costa Rica's and Aventuras El Lago's 8 a.m. shared fare with taxes already inside. The $50.85 column is Two Weeks in Costa Rica's $45 shared fare plus 13% tax. Both private columns are group prices plus 13% tax and hold flat inside their passenger band; the road-only van moves to its 9 to 16 band, $447.48, at nine passengers. Private jeep-boat-jeep at $260 is left out because it caps at five, then adds $28 a head.
At nine the private boat takes the lead. $429.40 with tax, against $457.65 for nine shared seats from the same operator and $447.48 for the larger van. $28.25 saved and a boat to yourselves, for one to twenty passengers at the same price. 9, 3, 4
The cheapest fare here stays the cheapest for almost everybody. At $33 a head with taxes inside, the 8 a.m. shared jeep-boat-jeep loses only to the private road-only van at eight passengers, and then by $5.23. Under eight people, book seats and spend the difference in La Fortuna. 1, 2, 4
What can you bring on the boat?
The bags go down the path with you. On the shared crossing, luggage is loaded onto the boat, and depending on how many passengers are aboard you may need to help carry your own along the path to the water, which turns slippery. The operator asks for backpacks or bags you can handle yourself. 3
The road-only van is the opposite arrangement. Luggage rides in the back, sized for one large suitcase and one medium carry-on per passenger plus personal items, with a bigger vehicle available on request. Hard cases and a steep path do not mix. Hard cases and a cargo hold are fine. 4
Two conditions worth checking with any operator: Easy Ride adds $20 for each surfboard and takes no pets on its shared shuttles. 10
Is there a cheaper way than the shuttle?
A public bus exists, and it covers half the journey. Transmonteverde runs Monteverde to Tilarán daily at 7 a.m., about three hours, with a return from Tilarán around half past twelve. Tilarán is the junction town where the self-drive route turns off too. 15
The second half is where the trail goes cold. No operator's own page published a schedule or a fare for Tilarán to La Fortuna in September 2026. Ask at the Tilarán terminal when you arrive, and do not build the day around a fare you find in a search summary. 15
Which makes the bus a day, not a saving. Keep the $33 shared fare in reserve and price the extra night against it. MMT's two weeks in Costa Rica cost breakdown does that arithmetic across the rest of the trip. 1
Which one should you book?
What decides it: how many of you there are, what you are carrying, and whether you want the lake. Every option lands in La Fortuna in about the same 3.5 hours, so this is a comfort and money question rather than a time one.
- Two of you with light bags: the 8 a.m. shared jeep-boat-jeep at $33 each, taxes inside. Cheapest named fare on the route, and the hour on the lake is the best part of the day. 1, 2
- A family with suitcases: the private road-only van, $258.77 with tax for up to eight, one large case and one carry-on each, and no path down to the water. 4
- Six to eight travelling together: at eight the private road-only van finally undercuts shared seats, $258.77 against $264. At six or seven, book shared and save $60.77 or $27.77. 4, 1, 2
- Nine or more who want one boat to yourselves: the private shuttle-boat-shuttle at $429.40 with tax, one price for one to twenty. Nine shared seats are $297, so this is $132.40 for privacy, not a saving. 9, 1, 2
- Already holding a rental car: drive Route 142 to Tilarán and 606 into Santa Elena in daylight, fuel up in Nuevo Arenal or Tilarán, and hand the car back in La Fortuna rather than Monteverde to save $45. 5, 14
This leg is one line in a bigger plan. MMT's two-week Costa Rica itinerary puts Monteverde and La Fortuna in order with the Pacific coast, and the Costa Rica travel guide covers arrival, seasons and the rest of the country. Staying past a holiday changes the paperwork, and the Costa Rica digital nomad requirements are where that starts.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the jeep-boat-jeep from Monteverde to La Fortuna?
TBT Costa Rica and Aventuras El Lago both charge $33 per person on the 8 a.m. shared service and $40 on the 2 p.m., with taxes and fees included, or $260 for a private crossing of up to five passengers plus $28 for each extra. Two Weeks in Costa Rica sells its shared shuttle-boat-shuttle at $45 per person plus 13% tax, which is $50.85, and Easy Ride charges $45 per person for the same shape of trip. 1, 2, 3, 10
Is the boat faster than going around the lake?
No. Two Weeks in Costa Rica gives about 3.5 hours door to door for its shared boat crossing and about 3.5 hours for its private road-only van, and the same operator's driving guide gives 3.5 hours for the self-drive around Lake Arenal. The jeep-boat-jeep changes the ride, not the arrival time. 3, 4, 5
Which direction is the slower one?
The road leg is much longer on the Monteverde side. Aventuras El Lago puts it at about 1 hour 45 minutes from Monteverde to the lake against about 20 minutes from La Fortuna, because Monteverde sits far back from the shore. Total door-to-door time still runs 3.5 to 4 hours either way. 2
Can I take big suitcases on the Lake Arenal crossing?
Luggage is loaded onto the boat, and the operator warns that passengers may need to help carry their own bags down a steep path to the water that gets slippery, recommending backpacks or easily handled luggage. With hard cases, book the private road-only van instead: it is sized for one large suitcase and one medium carry-on per passenger, with a larger vehicle on request. 3, 4
When does booking privately cost less than shared seats?
Below eight, shared seats win; the 8 a.m. jeep-boat-jeep at $33 a head is the cheapest named fare on the route until eight passengers, where the van edges it by $5.23. 4, 1, 2
Should I drive Monteverde to La Fortuna myself?
Only in daylight and preferably in a 4x4. Route 142 around the lake is paved and takes about 1.5 hours; Route 145 out of Tilarán turns to gravel and dirt before 606 reaches Santa Elena, another 1.5 hours. Fuel exists in Nuevo Arenal and Tilarán only, there are no guardrails, and the operator's own advice is to drive it between roughly 5:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. 5
Is there a public bus between Monteverde and La Fortuna?
In two legs, and only one of them is documented. Transmonteverde runs Monteverde to Tilarán daily at 7 a.m. in about three hours, with a return around 12:30 p.m. No operator page published the Tilarán to La Fortuna schedule or fare in September 2026, so treat that leg as an unknown to confirm at the terminal. 15
Do these prices change later in 2026?
One of them does, on a date the operator names. Two Weeks in Costa Rica's private road-only van goes from $229 to $256 for one to eight passengers and from $396 to $435 for nine to sixteen on 15 December 2026, which with 13% tax is $289.28 and $491.55. The jeep-boat-jeep fares carry no published change date, so check them before you pay. 4, 1
