Three reserves, one small town
The mist arrives before the trail does. Monteverde sits about 1,400 metres up, averages 18C across the year and takes roughly 3,000 mm of rain and drip. 8 You walk in a fleece here, in the tropics. Moss hangs off every branch. The bird you came for is somewhere inside it.
Three reserves share the town of Santa Elena, and they charge three different prices for the same band of forest. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is the famous one. Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is the quiet one. Curi-Cancha Wildlife Refuge is where the birders go. Most people book the first, and plenty of them would have had a better morning at one of the others.
Nearly everyone drives in on Route 606. From San Jose it is 133 kilometres, or 83 miles, and about 3.5 to 4 hours by Route 27 and the Interamericana. 9 Monteverde usually sits in the middle of a two-week Costa Rica route, two or three nights long. That is why the choice of gate matters more than it looks.
What does each Monteverde reserve charge in 2026?
Adult and child entrance at all three gates, and the age bands where they part company.
The three gates sit within USD 8 of each other. One adult pays USD 21 at Santa Elena, USD 25 at Curi-Cancha and USD 29 for a single circuit at Monteverde. 2, 3, 1 The age bands are where they part company, and they differ enough to move a family's plan by twenty dollars.
| Reserve | Adult (USD) | Child (USD) | Hours | How you walk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve | 21 (senior 65+ 18; student 15) | 11.50, ages 8-12; free under 8 | 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. | Self-guided; tickets sold at the entrance office |
| Curi-Cancha Wildlife Refuge | 25 | 15, ages 5-20 | 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. | Self-guided, plus its own night, natural history and birding tours |
| Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve | 29 per circuit; 87 for all three | 16 per circuit, ages 6-11; free 0-5 | 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. | Self-guided circuits, plus a natural history walk and a night walk |
Parking at Monteverde is USD 5. Santa Elena's figures come from June 2021 reporting because the reserve's own price page is offline, so treat them as the number to check at the gate. 1, 2, 10
Table view: What one adult pays to walk
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Santa Elena, entrance | $21 |
| Curi-Cancha, entrance | $25 |
| Monteverde, one circuit | $29 |
| 100% Aventura, guided bridges | $45 |
| Selvatura Wood Pack, with tax | $75.26 |
| Monteverde, all three circuits | $87 |
Take the gap from the top bar. USD 87 at Monteverde buys four Santa Elena tickets with change left over, and the bridges are priced as an attraction rather than a reserve. Selvatura's bar adds the 13% tax to its posted rate and leaves out the fees its page mentions without naming. Source: 2, 3, 1, 5, 4
Two reserves in a day costs less than two circuits at one. Curi-Cancha plus Santa Elena is USD 46 and gives you two different forests; two Monteverde circuits is USD 58 for one. Both of the cheaper gates open at 7 a.m. and close at 3 p.m., so the double morning works if you are there when the ticket window opens, then move at midday. 3, 2, 1
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve: three circuits, three tickets
The reserve that made this forest famous runs on a cap. Only a set number of walkers are allowed on the trails at one time, a limit the reserve says it sets from its own science. 10 You park at the visitor centre 1.5 kilometres below the forest and ride a free shuttle up, every 15 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., with the last one back down at 4:30 p.m. 1, 10
- Three self-guided circuits: Heart of the Forest, Continental Divide and Essence. The Continental Divide is the long one at 4.1 kilometres and about 2.5 hours, which prices its USD 29 ticket at USD 11.60 an hour on the trail. 10, 1
- More than 400 bird species on the reserve's own count, the resplendent quetzal and the three-wattled bellbird among them. 11
- Over 3,000 plant species, including 450-plus orchids and 800-plus epiphytes, plus all six of Costa Rica's wildcat species. 11
- A 48-hour refund line: cancel at least 48 hours ahead and the reserve refunds in full. 10
Inside the gate there is one hanging bridge, a small waterfall and a viewpoint that reaches both oceans on a clear day. 3 The forest here is old-growth and close-packed, which is the reason the tour groups come and also the reason a quetzal can sit ten metres away for an hour while nobody spots it.
Santa Elena or Monteverde: which reserve should you book?
Santa Elena is the quieter gate, and USD 8 cheaper. Its adult ticket is USD 21 against Monteverde's USD 29 for one circuit, it opens half an hour earlier at 7 a.m., and it sells tickets at the entrance office for self-guided walks. One trail there is built for universal access. 2
The difference shows up in the parking lot. One MyTanFeet visit in 2021 found Santa Elena's lot half full and every car a rental, with the tour shuttles absent, while Monteverde's lot held large shuttles and most people on its trails moved in groups. 2 High season runs December to April, and a separate MyTanFeet report from a March visit found large tour and school groups on Monteverde's trails. 3
| Reserve | Two adults (USD) | One child (USD) | Total (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santa Elena | 42 | 11.50, age 8-12 | 53.50 |
| Curi-Cancha | 50 | 15, age 5-20 | 65.00 |
| Monteverde, one circuit | 58 | 16, age 6-11 | 74.00 |
| Monteverde costs this much more | 16 | 4.50 | 20.50 |
Arithmetic on each reserve's published per-person prices: 21 + 21 + 11.50 at Santa Elena, 25 + 25 + 15 at Curi-Cancha, 29 + 29 + 16 at Monteverde. Monteverde adds USD 5 parking on top. A 13-year-old still pays the child rate at Curi-Cancha and the adult rate at the other two. 2, 3, 1
Book Santa Elena when the day is about walking in cloud without a queue, and Monteverde when you want a named circuit, the cap on numbers and the guided natural history walk. The forest band is the same on both sides of the ridge. The traffic is the difference you are paying for.
Curi-Cancha: where the birders go
USD 25 buys the most open trails of the three and the best odds on a quetzal. Curi-Cancha grew back on former farmland, so it holds secondary forest and stretches of pasture, with shorter and lighter walking than Monteverde's circuits. Around 200 of the 800-plus bird species recorded in Costa Rica turn up here. 3
Resplendent quetzals feed in a big avocado tree beside the Alondra Trail, a short walk from the main entrance, and February to June is their mating season. One writer counted five birds in that tree at once, which is a good morning rather than a schedule. 3 Bring the long lens. Be at the 7 a.m. opening, because the light and the birds both work early.

How much do the Monteverde hanging bridges cost?
Two named operators, their posted rates and what the tax line does to them.
The bridges come bundled, and one adult pays USD 75.26 for the cheapest of those bundles once tax lands. Selvatura Park's Wood Pack pairs its hanging-bridges walk with the Butterfly Garden at a regular rate of USD 66.60, which reaches USD 75.26 with 13% tax, plus fees the page mentions without naming. It runs 2.5 to 3 hours, daily at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the posted rate holds until 15 December 2026. 4
| Option | Posted rate (USD) | With 13% tax (USD) | Length | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selvatura Wood Pack, regular, 19+ | 66.60 | 75.26 | 2.5 to 3 hours | Self-guided; private guide costs extra |
| Selvatura Wood Pack, student, 12-18 | 59.94 | 67.73 | 2.5 to 3 hours | Self-guided |
| Selvatura Wood Pack, child, 4-11 | 46.62 | 52.68 | 2.5 to 3 hours | Self-guided |
| Selvatura Wood Pack, local rate | 59.94 | 67.73 | 2.5 to 3 hours | Self-guided |
| 100% Aventura, Monteverde Hanging Bridge Tour | from 45.00 | tax treatment unstated | About 2 hours | Naturalist guide included |
Selvatura prices the Wood Pack as rate plus 13% tax plus fees, so the tax column is arithmetic on the posted rate and the fees are still to come. The Wood Pack includes the Butterfly Garden; all ten of Selvatura's current packages tie the bridges to at least one other activity. Cancellation at Selvatura: full refund 48 hours ahead, half between 24 and 48 hours, none inside a day. 4, 5

The guided walk is the cheaper way onto a bridge. 100% Aventura sells a standalone two-hour Monteverde Hanging Bridge Tour from USD 45 an adult with a naturalist guide, USD 30.26 less than Selvatura's taxed Wood Pack. 5, 4 The trade is plain: a butterfly garden and your own pace, or a guide who finds the sloth.
One caution on ages. Aventura's page lists 6 and up for the bridges and 4 and up for a different product on the same screen, so phone ahead if a small child is coming. 5
Which Monteverde night tour is worth the money?
USD 45 puts you inside Curi-Cancha after dark with the entrance fee included. MonteTours runs a Curi-Cancha Night Tour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at USD 45 for adults 12 and over and the same USD 45 for children 6 to 11, covering the guide, Curi-Cancha's own entrance and the flashlights. A solo traveller pays USD 100 for those two hours. Transport costs extra. 6
| Night walk | Adult (USD) | Student or child (USD) | Times | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MonteTours Monteverde Night Tour | 35 | 29 student 12-17; 27 child 4-11 | 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., 2 hours | MonteTours' own forest trails |
| MonteTours Curi-Cancha Night Tour | 45; 100 solo | 45, ages 6-11 | 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. | Inside Curi-Cancha, entrance included |
| Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve night walk | unpublished | unpublished | Starts 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. | Inside the reserve; night clients enter at 5:45 p.m. |
MonteTours charges Costa Rican nationals USD 27 at any age on its Monteverde walk and cancels free 24 hours ahead. The Monteverde reserve names its night walk and its start window on its own site but posts no price outside its booking system, so ask at the visitor centre and expect to book on the spot. 7, 10
Two people are the break point on the Curi-Cancha walk. Alone it is USD 100; as a pair it is USD 90 between you, and the group rate holds from there. 6 MonteTours' own Monteverde night walk is USD 35 an adult, twice a night at 6 and 8 p.m., on the operator's trails instead of inside one of the three reserves. Same guide, same torchlight, a different patch of forest. 7
How do you fit all this into two or three days?
One reserve a morning, one walk after dark, and USD 125 covers every gate. A Monteverde circuit at USD 29 with USD 5 parking, Curi-Cancha at USD 25, the Curi-Cancha night walk at USD 45 and Santa Elena at USD 21 add up to USD 125 an adult across three days. Add the guided bridge walk and it is USD 170; swap in Selvatura's taxed Wood Pack and it is USD 200.26. 1, 3, 6, 2, 5, 4
Sleep in Santa Elena town
Route 606 signs point to Santa Elena, and the town serves all three reserves and most of the hotels. From San Jose the drive is 133 kilometres and about 3.5 to 4 hours by Route 27 and the Interamericana. 9
Keep one afternoon for the bridges
Selvatura's Wood Pack departs at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and takes 2.5 to 3 hours, so the 1 p.m. slot pairs cleanly with a 7 a.m. reserve morning. 4
Monteverde sits in the middle of a longer route for almost everyone who comes. The two-week Costa Rica itinerary places it between San Jose and the Pacific coast, the two-week cost page prices the whole fortnight around these gates, and the Costa Rica country guide holds the rest.
Three more pages do the jobs around the edges. SJO or Liberia settles which airport puts you nearer Route 606, guided against self-guided walking works out what a naturalist actually buys you, and the tropics packing list covers the fleece a cloud forest morning asks for.
Frequently asked questions
Which Monteverde reserve is best for a first visit?
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, if you want the named circuits, the capped trail numbers and old-growth forest, at USD 29 a circuit plus USD 5 parking. Choose Santa Elena at USD 21 for a quieter walk, and Curi-Cancha at USD 25 if birds are the point of the morning. 1, 2, 3
Do I need a guide in the Monteverde reserves?
All three sell self-guided entrance, so a guide is an add-on you choose. Santa Elena sells tickets for self-guided walks at its entrance office, Curi-Cancha sells passes alongside its own night, natural history and birding tours, and Monteverde sells its circuits plus a natural history walk and a night walk. 2, 3, 10
What does a child pay at each reserve?
A 13-year-old still pays the child rate at Curi-Cancha, which runs its child band from 5 to 20, but pays the adult rate at Santa Elena, where the child band stops at 12, and at Monteverde, where it stops at 11. The bands are USD 11.50 at Santa Elena (ages 8-12), USD 15 at Curi-Cancha (ages 5-20) and USD 16 at Monteverde (ages 6-11). 2, 3, 1
Is Monteverde crowded in high season?
December to April is the busy window, and it is also the dry season and the easiest driving on Route 606. A writer walking the reserve in March kept meeting large tour and school groups, while Santa Elena's lot on a separate visit held only rental cars. 3, 2, 9
How do I book Curi-Cancha now that its website is down?
Any online listing you find belongs to a third party, since both curicancha.com and curi-cancha.com resolve to a parked GoDaddy page with no reserve content or booking system, checked on 25 September 2026. Go through a tour operator instead, or pay in person at the gate. 12, 6
