What the gold, the jade, the National Museum and a theatre tour cost a visiting adult in September 2026, and the order that works around the Monday closure.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Four tickets, $53.28 for one visiting adult. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum charges ₡8,400, the Jade Museum $16, the National Museum $11 and a National Theatre tour ₡3,500. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Monday sets the order of your two days. The National Museum closes on Mondays. The Gold Museum runs 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and the Jade Museum 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. 3, 6, 2
  • Go to the Jade Museum on a Wednesday. Its published 2-for-1 puts two foreign adults through the door on one $16 ticket, which is $8 each. 2
  • A main course at Isolina in Barrio Escalante runs ₡9,400 to ₡17,400, about $20.76 to $38.43, on a menu the kitchen rebuilds with the season. 7, 5
  • A US passport buys 180 days. Costa Rica put the United States in Group I of the entry directive in force since 17 November 2025, and asks for one day of passport validity at the border. 8

Is San José worth visiting?

The honest case for two days in a capital most itineraries treat as a taxi rank.

Two blocks of Barrio Amón hold more of Costa Rica's story than any beach. A green wooden house with a red roof and a white veranda sits behind an iron fence on the corner of Avenida 9. Around the corner, a house finished in 1896 from metal parts shipped in from France, Belgium and the United States has been home to the Alianza Francesa since 1965. The country declared it heritage in 1997. 9

Most Costa Rica plans give the capital one night and a shuttle out at dawn. The reasoning is fair. The volcanoes and the cloud forest are elsewhere, and most of what the capital is good at sits behind doors rather than on the street. Two days change the arithmetic, because four ticketed places sit inside a short walk of each other and the market has fed the same block since 1880. 10

  • A museum core you can walk. The Gold Museum sits under Plaza de la Cultura, between Avenida Central and Avenida 2 at Calle 5. The Jade Museum stands beside Plaza de la Democracia. The National Museum holds the old Cuartel Bellavista. 6, 2, 3
  • A market with a heritage declaration. The Mercado Central has filled a full block of Avenida Central since 1880, 250 meters northwest of Parque Central, with more than 200 stalls and shops and the counter kitchens Costa Ricans call sodas. 10
  • A theatre you can walk through for ₡3,500. Guided tours run in Spanish and English; the theatre's own page publishes the price but not a schedule or a group-size cap, so ask at the box office. 4
  • A food street with real kitchens. Barrio Escalante keeps Isolina at Calle 33 and Avenida 1, cooking a seasonal menu built on Costa Rican producers. 7

The capital runs cooler than the coast. San José's average temperature stays under 22C, in a usual range of 12C to 28C, which makes it one of the coldest capitals in Central America. Bring a layer for the evening. The beach clothes come out later in the trip. 11

What does two days in San José cost?

Four admissions, read from each venue's own page on 25 September 2026, in both currencies.

Four admissions come to $53.28 for one visiting adult. Costa Rica prices some of its museums in colones and some in dollars, so the table shows both, converted at the Banco Central de Costa Rica's MONEX weighted average of ₡452.82 per US dollar on 24 September 2026. 5

Students and children move the total a long way. The Gold Museum charges ₡6,300 for a foreign student, about $13.91. The National Museum charges $6, the Jade Museum $5, and children aged 6 to 12 pay $2 there. Anybody under 12 walks the theatre tour free. 1, 3, 2, 4, 5

What is open on the day you arrive?

One closure decides everything else: the National Museum shuts on Mondays.

Land on a Monday and the gold, the theatre and the market carry the afternoon. The National Museum is the one place on this page that keeps a closing day, and Monday is it. Land on a Sunday and the museum opens at 9 a.m., with free entry for Costa Rican nationals under conditions its own page marks and leaves unstated. 3, 6, 2, 4

Where should you spend the two nights?

Barrio Amón for the architecture, Barrio Escalante for dinner. Either works.

Barrio Amón is the coffee-boom neighborhood itself, a grid of houses from the 1890s and 1900s that the country has declared heritage one at a time. Barrio Escalante is where dinner is. Two nights in either puts the museum core inside a short ride. MMT's where to stay in San José compares Escalante, Amón and Escazú block by block. 9, 7

ROUTETwo nights in San José, and what each one is for2 nights
  1. 01
    Barrio Amón1 night

You sleep among the houses the coffee trade built. The 1910 house at Avenida 9 and Calle 11 held the US Embassy in 1920, sheltered José Figueres Ferrer around the 1948 revolution and became Costa Rica's national film center in 1973. Its heritage declaration came in 1994. 9

→ From Juan Santamaría (SJO), Easy Ride charges a fixed $49 one way to any hotel in downtown San José, for up to four people. 12
  2. 02
    Barrio Escalante1 night

Calle 33 is the food street. Isolina's mains run ₡9,400 to ₡17,400 and its small plates open at ₡3,700, so dinner scales to the day you have had. Walk home after. 7

→ Move east in the morning, or hold one room for both nights and come over for dinner.

With less time: One night only? Sleep in Barrio Amón and give the single full day to the Plaza de la Cultura block: the Gold Museum at 9:15 a.m., a theatre tour, then the Mercado Central. 6, 4, 10

San José works best as a bookend. Land, take these two days, then go for the cloud forest and the coast, and keep a night here before the flight home. MMT's two-week Costa Rica itinerary lays out that route with the transfer fares, and the two-week cost page prices the rest of the fortnight.

Day one: gold, a theatre and the Mercado Central

Start under Plaza de la Cultura at 9:15 a.m., the minute the Gold Museum opens. The hall belongs to the Museos del Banco Central, and one ₡8,400 ticket also covers the Numismatic Museum and whatever is up in the temporary rooms. 6, 1

  1. 9:15 a.m. Museo del Oro Precolombino

Open 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Sunday. A foreign adult pays ₡8,400, about $18.55, before the service charge the ticketing page lists separately. A foreign student pays ₡6,300. 6, 1, 5

  2. 11 a.m. Eight peoples, on film

The museum built this hall around the cultural diversity of Costa Rica's eight present-day Indigenous peoples, and set aside a small audiovisual room for a documentary of Indigenous testimony on territory, language, family life, schooling and work. Give it the time it asks for. 6

  3. Midday. A theatre tour for ₡3,500

Guided tours run in Spanish and English; the theatre's own page publishes the price but not a schedule or a group-size cap, so ask at the box office. A foreign adult pays ₡3,500, about $7.73. Costa Rican adults pay ₡2,000 with identification and seniors ₡1,500. 4, 5

  4. Afternoon. The Mercado Central

The market fills a block of Avenida Central, 250 meters northwest of Parque Central, with more than 200 stalls, shops and the counter kitchens called sodas. Established in 1880, it carries a cultural heritage declaration for its tradition and identity. 10

  5. Evening. Calle 33, Barrio Escalante

Isolina sits at Calle 33 and Avenida 1. Small plates start at ₡3,700, about $8.17, and the isoburger is ₡9,400, about $20.76. The kitchen builds the menu from Costa Rican producers and changes it with the season. 7, 5

Day two: the National Museum, jade and Barrio Amón

The old Bellavista Barracks is a yellow fort with two round crenellated turrets and a flag over the steps. It opens at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday to Saturday and at 9 a.m. on Sunday, closing at 4:30 p.m. either way. A foreign adult pays $11, a foreign student $6, a Costa Rican adult ₡2,500. 3

  1. 8:30 a.m. Museo Nacional de Costa Rica

Tuesday to Saturday the doors open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 4:30 p.m.; Sunday runs 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum occupies the former Cuartel Bellavista. Its number is +506 2211 5700. 3

  2. 11 a.m. Museo del Jade

Beside Plaza de la Democracia, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. A foreign adult pays $16, a foreign student $5, children aged 6 to 12 pay $2 and under-fives go free. Five permanent halls, and Wednesdays are 2-for-1. 2

  3. Afternoon. Barrio Amón on foot

Begin at Avenida 7 and Calle 5, where the house finished in 1896 from prefabricated metal shipped from France, Belgium and the United States has housed the Alianza Francesa de Costa Rica since 1965. Its heritage declaration came in 1997, and the neighborhood association credits it with starting the street's architectural turn. 9

  4. Later. Avenida 9 and Calle 11

The Victorian house on that corner, built in 1910 by Walter J. Ford, has been the Centro Costarricense de Producción Cinematográfica since 1973: a working film institution, with no general admission. Admire it from the sidewalk. 9

One framing is worth carrying between the two museums. The Gold Museum describes its own hall as a way of making visible the cultural diversity of Costa Rica's eight present-day Indigenous peoples, with the testimony coming from those communities. 6 Among those eight are the Bribri, the Cabécar and the Maleku, all living peoples with their own territories and their own terms for visitors. The gold in a capital city is an introduction.

Where should you eat in Barrio Escalante?

One kitchen on this page publishes its prices, and it earns the walk. Isolina sits at Calle 33 and Avenida 1 and cooks a seasonal menu from Costa Rican producers, which means the dishes below move through the year while the shape of the bill holds. 7

Isolina, Barrio Escalante: published menu prices, 25 September 2026 7, 5
DishColones (CRC)US dollars (USD)
Arracache hashbrown, coconut foam3,700$8.17
Cured steak tartare, bread with pork cracklings and bone marrow9,500$20.98
Isoburger, local wagyu, french fries9,400$20.76
New York steak, shiitake butter, roasted potatoes and enoki mushrooms17,400$38.43
One small plate and the isoburger13,100$28.93

Converted at ₡452.82 per US dollar, the Banco Central's rate for 24 September 2026. Isolina is the one kitchen on Calle 33 publishing a full price list on 25 September 2026; two others checked the same day publish none. 5, 7

Escalante is where San José eats out, and it is the reason a second night in the capital earns its keep. Isolina's own menu names what it cooks and who grows it. Walk the blocks around Calle 33, read the rooms, and pick the one with people in it. 7

How safe is San José for visitors?

Costa Rica carries a Level 2 advisory, exercise increased caution, because of crime. That is the second of the State Department's four steps, it covers the whole country, and the US Embassy in San José displays it on its own site. 13

On 25 November 2025 the embassy issued a country-wide alert naming three patterns that reached foreigners, US citizens among them. Read them as a short list of habits, and the two days stay uneventful. 13

  • Foreign-owned businesses and residences have been targeted by criminal gangs for robbery, break-ins and extortion. 13
  • Foreign residents and travelers have been forced to withdraw large sums of cash from ATMs or to make bank transfers. 13
  • Short-term rentals have been the scene of reported break-ins and armed robberies, at Airbnbs and other rental properties. 13

When should you go, and what will the weather do?

The dry season runs January to April, colder in the hills above the city than down in San José itself. Across the year the rain totals about 2,000mm, and from July to September the city sees something like 25 rainy days a month. Two days of museums hold up in either season, which is part of the capital's argument: the rain has somewhere to put you. 11

San José by season, from the city's climate record 11
SeasonMonthsWhat it doesWhat to pack
Dry seasonJanuary to AprilDaytime highs near 31C, overnight lows near 10C, colder in the hills above the cityA layer for the evening
Rest of the yearHeaviest July to SeptemberAbout 2,000mm of rain a year, with roughly 25 rain days a month from July to SeptemberA rain layer and an indoor plan B

Pack for altitude. San José sits at roughly 1,200 meters, high enough to cool an evening even when the coast is warm. The central canton counts 288,054 residents and the wider metropolitan area runs past 2,600,000, which is why the traffic behaves the way it does. 11

If two days turn into a longer look, MMT's Costa Rica digital nomad stay page sets out the income and insurance evidence that route asks for, and the Costa Rica guides hub collects the rest of the country.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Costa Rica?

A US passport holder enters without a visa and may stay up to 180 calendar days, under the entry directive in force since 17 November 2025 that places the United States in Group I. The passport needs one day of validity at the border, and the authorized stay ends when the passport expires. 8

Is San José worth two days?

Two days if museums, architecture and food are why you travel; one night if the volcanoes and the cloud forest are the point and the capital is just the way in. The ticketed core comes to $53.28 for one visiting adult, and the Mercado Central and Barrio Amón cost nothing to walk. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Which San José museum should I pick if I only have one?

The Museo del Oro Precolombino, at ₡8,400 for a foreign adult. The same ticket covers the Numismatic Museum and the temporary rooms, it opens 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the week, and the museum frames the hall around the cultural diversity of Costa Rica's eight present-day Indigenous peoples. 1, 6

Which day is cheapest for San José museums?

Wednesday, when the Jade Museum's 2-for-1 makes its $16 foreign-adult ticket $8 a head. Beyond that, students pay less at all three museums: ₡6,300 at the Gold Museum, $6 at the National Museum and $5 at the Jade Museum, and children aged 6 to 12 pay $2 at the Jade Museum. 2, 1, 3

Should I pay in colones or dollars in San José?

Both circulate, and the venues split. The Gold Museum and the theatre quote colones; the National Museum and the Jade Museum quote dollars. The Banco Central's MONEX weighted average was ₡452.82 per US dollar on 24 September 2026, so ₡8,400 is about $18.55. Carry colones for the market and the theatre tour. 5, 1, 4, 2, 3

How do I get from SJO airport into San José?

Easy Ride publishes a fixed $49 one way from Juan Santamaría airport to any hotel in downtown San José, for up to four people. 12 Hotel 1492 quotes $35 to Barrio Escalante and 30 minutes from the airport to its own door. Both price the vehicle, not the seat, so they are good value for three or four. MMT's where to stay in San José compares the areas and both transfers.

How much is dinner in Barrio Escalante?

At Isolina, on Calle 33 at Avenida 1, small plates and mains run about $8 to $38, roughly ₡3,700 to ₡17,400, though the kitchen changes the menu with the season, so read that as a range, not a fixed price. 7, 5

Is it safe to walk around San José?

Costa Rica sits at Level 2, exercise increased caution, for crime. The embassy's alert of 25 November 2025 names robbery and extortion aimed at foreign-owned homes and businesses, forced ATM withdrawals and bank transfers, and break-ins and armed robberies at short-term rentals. Keep cash low, keep valuables out of sight, check the identification of anyone claiming to be an official, and report an incident to the OIJ. 13
