Two volcanoes, one coffee belt, an hour from the city
By eight in the morning the road out of San José is climbing through coffee. Rows of green bushes run up the hillside, the air cools a degree every few minutes, and the city drops away behind you. An hour later you are at the rim of an active crater looking down at a pale green acid lake. That is a day trip here, and it costs less than most people put aside for it.
Two volcanoes anchor the choice. Poás sits northwest in Alajuela province, holds the tourism board's Elite sustainability rating across all 83 assessed indicators, and has one of the largest craters in the world. Irazú rises east above Cartago: 3,432 meters, Costa Rica's tallest, five craters, and a mean annual temperature of 5 to 9 degrees Celsius. 1, 14
Between them lies the Central Valley coffee belt, where two farms publish their own tour prices: Hacienda Doka on the road up to Poás, and Café Britt in Heredia. Everything below was read on the providers' and the government's own pages on 25 September 2026, so you can see exactly where the money goes. 11, 13
How do you buy Poás volcano tickets?
One portal, one account, one price set by decree. The gate itself takes nothing.
Every ticket is sold in advance on SINAC's own reservation system, and there is no till at the entrance. Poás and Irazú each appear as separate bookable areas on the portal, and Irazú splits again into its crater sector and the Prusia forest sector. Arriving at the gate with cash ends the day early. 3
Make the account the night before
The reservation system runs on a user account. Set it up at the hotel, with a real connection, instead of in a parking lot at 2,700 meters. 3
Save the confirmation offline
The last stretch of road to each crater climbs hard and the signal thins out. Screenshot the booking before you leave the valley.
| Park | Non-resident (USD) | Resident (CRC) | How it sells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poás Volcano National Park | 15.00 | 1,000 | SINAC portal, in advance |
| Irazú Volcano National Park | 15.00 | 1,000 | SINAC portal; crater and Prusia book apart |
| Guayabo National Monument | 5.00 | 1,000 | SINAC portal, in advance |
Guayabo National Monument, near Turrialba, is the cheapest of the three gates. The resident fee works out at about USD 2.21 at CRC 452.82 to the dollar, the Banco Central de Costa Rica MONEX weighted average for 24 September 2026. 2, 10
Will Poás be open on the day you go?
Poás has closed four times in nine years, twice of them in the last eighteen months. An explosive eruption on the evening of 12 April 2017 closed the park the next day, and it stayed closed until August 2018. The volcano erupted briefly twice more in September 2019. 4
It shut again on 26 March 2025, on the advice of the national emergency commission. By 25 June 2025 the alert had come down from Precaución 3 to Advertencia 2, with fewer eruptions, gases, tremors and ash. The environment ministry held the park closed anyway, to keep visitors and rangers safe. 5
Then the road failed. On 21 January 2026 the transport ministry closed the bridge over the Quebrada Tigre on Route 120, the main way up, over collapse risk. SINAC held the park shut past the bridge's 25 January target and told ticket holders to write to the park. The one alternate route was, in the conservation area's own words, of very high risk. 6
| Closed from | Reason | Back open |
|---|---|---|
| 13 April 2017 | Explosive eruption the evening before, with more at Easter | August 2018 |
| September 2019 | Two brief eruptions | No reopening date published |
| 26 March 2025 | Volcanic activity, on the emergency commission's advice | Held shut past the alert downgrade of 25 June 2025 |
| 21 January 2026 | Collapse risk on the Route 120 access bridge | Listed as bookable on SINAC's portal by 25 September 2026 |
Two separate causes inside twelve months, volcanic activity and then infrastructure, which is the pattern worth planning around.
Treat the booking as a plan and the park's status as the decision. The portal listed Poás as bookable on 25 September 2026. Check it again the evening before you drive, and hold Doka or Cartago in reserve. 3
What does an Irazú volcano tour cost?
A named half-day tour to Irazú costs USD 88 a person, and the gate fee is already inside it. Enter Costa Rica runs it from San José, Alajuela, Heredia or Escazú, with round-trip transport, the SINAC entrance and a bilingual guide. Transport takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way, and the whole outing, Irazú plus the Cartago basilica, runs 5 to 6 hours. 8

The drive looks short on paper. Irazú sits about 31 km above Cartago, and Cartago about 14 km from San José, roughly 45 km from the capital. Altitude is what stretches the clock: 3,432 meters, five craters, and an average of 5 to 9 degrees Celsius through the year. 14
Rain splits by sector. The crater side takes 2,387 mm a year and the Prusia forest side 1,527 mm, and Prusia keeps 16 km of trails for anyone who wants a walk instead of a viewpoint. Pack for cold at the top even when the valley is warm. 14
Which coffee tour near San José is worth the morning?
Two farms publish their own rates. The gap between the cheapest and dearest ticket is almost entirely transport.
Two farms near the capital print their prices, and transport is what separates them. Hacienda Doka sits in Sabanilla de Alajuela, on the road up to Poás, and charges USD 28 for its hour-long Coffee Tour Experience. Café Britt, in Heredia and a short drive from the airport, charges USD 31 for a 90-minute Classic Coffee Tour at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. or 3:15 p.m. 11, 13

| Tour | Tour only (USD) | Plus lunch (USD) | Plus transport (USD) | Plus both (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hacienda Doka, Coffee Tour Experience, about 1 hour | 28 | 43 | sold with lunch only | 99 |
| Café Britt, Classic Coffee Tour, about 90 minutes | 31 | 48 | 56 | 69 |
Child rates: Doka USD 14 for ages 6 to 12, Britt USD 25 for children and students, with under-sixes free at Britt. Residents pay USD 14 for Doka's base tour, and at Britt residents pay USD 25 for the tour alone, USD 47 with transport, USD 41 with lunch, or USD 63 with both - Britt's resident price moves with the add-on, it isn't flat. Adding transport costs USD 56 at Doka and USD 25 at Britt. 11, 13
Doka also sells the volcano. Its Coffee Tour Experience plus Poás Volcano package is USD 132 an adult and USD 122 a child, runs 6 to 7 hours, and includes the hike to the crater and lagoon with an optional walk on to Botos Lagoon. Residents and non-residents pay the same, which is unusual in Costa Rica. That is USD 104 over the plain coffee tour, for the drive, the guide and the day. 12, 11
Britt's location makes its 9 a.m. tour a real option on an arrival day or a departure morning, with the airport minutes away. Doka's location, up the Poás road in Alajuela, makes it the natural pairing with the volcano: one drive instead of two. 13, 11
Tour seat or rental car, priced
A guided day buys the driving, and the driving is most of what you pay for. Enter Costa Rica's Irazú half day is USD 88 a person. Two adults sharing a car pay USD 15 each at the gate plus about USD 11.87 of fuel for the 76 km round trip, which comes to USD 20.93 a head before the car itself. 8, 2, 9, 10
Table view: One day out of San José, per adult
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Doka coffee tour plus Poás volcano | $132 |
| Doka coffee tour, lunch and transport | $99 |
| Irazú and Cartago half-day tour | $88 |
| Café Britt tour, transport and lunch | $69 |
| Café Britt tour and transport | $56 |
| Café Britt tour only | $31 |
| Doka coffee tour only | $28 |
| Irazú gate and fuel, two sharing a car | $20.93 |
Transport is the line that moves the price. The bottom bar leaves out the rental car, the liability cover Costa Rican law puts inside every quote and the deposit hold; every bar above it includes the driving. Source: 12, 11, 8, 13, 2, 9, 10
| Day | Guided (USD) | Own car (USD) | What the number contains |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1, Poás crater and Hacienda Doka | 264.00 | 101.61 | Two Doka packages at USD 132, against two gate fees, two USD 28 coffee tours and USD 15.61 of fuel |
| Day 2, Irazú crater and Cartago | 176.00 | 41.87 | Two half-day tours at USD 88, against two gate fees and USD 11.87 of fuel |
| Two days, two adults | 440.00 | 143.48 | The gap of USD 296.52 is what the car has to beat |
Fuel at CRC 707 a liter, the national regulated price effective 10 September 2026, converted at CRC 452.82 to the dollar. Distances assume a 100 km round trip to Poás and 76 km to Irazú, at a planning figure of 10 liters per 100 km; substitute your own car's consumption. The own-car column leaves out the rental rate, the third-party liability cover Costa Rican law puts inside every quote, and Adobe's refundable damage deposit of USD 1,000, or USD 1,130 with tax. The guided column assumes Doka's USD 132 contains the Poás gate fee; the farm does not say. 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 12
The car earns its keep past the craters. USD 296.52 over two days is the budget the rental rate, the mandatory cover and the deposit hold have to fit inside. It also buys the stops a tour skips: lunch in Poasito, the towns of Fraijanes and San Pedro de Poás, and your own clock coming down the mountain. For one volcano and an early flight the next morning, the USD 88 seat is the simpler buy. 17, 1, 8
MMT prices the car itself in what two weeks in Costa Rica costs, and sets these two days inside the wider route in the 14-day Costa Rica itinerary. The same guided-against-independent question, worked in general, sits in guided vs self-guided costs.
Two days, two directions
Poás is west and Irazú is east, so doing both in one day means crossing the whole valley twice. Split them. The coffee belt sits on the Poás side, so day one carries the farm and day two stays short. 11, 14
- 01Day 1, west to Poás and Sabanilla de Alajuelasame bed in San José nights
The crater and its acid lake in the morning, coffee drying in the afternoon. Doka's combined package covers both for USD 132 an adult, or you drive it for two gate fees and a USD 28 tour. 12, 11, 2
→ About 50 km and 1.5 hours each way up through Alajuela, from a travel guide rather than an official source. 16 - 02Day 2, east to Irazú and Cartagosame bed in San José nights
Costa Rica's highest crater at 3,432 meters, then the basilica down in Cartago. The named half-day tour is USD 88 with the gate fee and a guide inside it. 14, 8
→ About 45 km from San José through Cartago, 1.5 to 2 hours by road on the operator's own timing. 14, 8
With less time: With one day, take Poás and Doka together and leave Irazú for the return trip. With one morning, take coffee: Britt's 9 a.m. start in Heredia puts you back in the city by lunch. 13
Pack for 3,432 meters
San José sits warm and the craters sit cold. Irazú's own mean annual temperature runs 5 to 9 degrees Celsius, and its crater sector takes 2,387 mm of rain a year. The gap between the valley and the rim is the thing people underdress for. 14
- A warm layer and a windproof shell. The average at Irazú runs 5 to 9 degrees Celsius through the year, high above the valley's warmth. 14
- Rain cover. Irazú's crater sector records 2,387 mm a year, against 1,527 mm on the Prusia side. 14
- Your booking, saved offline, with the sector named on it. Irazú's crater and Prusia sell as separate reservations. 3
- Colones for the small purchases, at about CRC 452.82 to the dollar on 24 September 2026. 10
- Shoes for walking, if Prusia is in the plan: 16 km of forest trails sit on the same mountain as the crater. 14
The towns around the rim are the other half of the day. SINAC names Poasito, Fraijanes, Varablanca and San Pedro de Poás as stops worth making near the park, and Poás holds the tourism board's Elite sustainability rating for meeting all 83 assessed indicators. More of the country sits in MMT's Costa Rica guides, and the colón side of a budget in the exchange-rate worksheet. 1
Frequently asked questions
Does the Prusia sector need its own ticket?
Yes. SINAC's portal lists Irazú's crater sector and its Prusia forest sector as two separate bookable areas, so a ticket for one does not cover the other. Book the sector you plan to visit. 3
What happens to my ticket if the park closes?
SINAC moves the date rather than giving the money back. Its portal tells a ticket holder whose park shut for an emergency to email reservaciones.sinac@sinac.go.cr and ask for a new day, and the money stays with the parks when a ticket goes unused. An announcement from the 2018 launch of online ticketing said the ticket could be used at a different national park instead, so ask which applies to your booking. 3, 7
How much is the entrance fee at Poás and Irazú in 2026?
USD 15 a person for non-residents at each volcano, set by national decree, and CRC 1,000 for residents, about USD 2.21 at CRC 452.82 to the dollar on 24 September 2026. Guayabo National Monument, near Turrialba, charges USD 5. 2, 10
Is a coffee tour transport add-on worth paying for?
That depends on whether a car is already parked outside. Café Britt charges USD 25 to add transport to its USD 31 tour, and Doka charges USD 56 to add transport to its USD 43 tour-and-lunch pairing. With your own wheels, both add-ons buy convenience alone. 13, 11
Do Poás and Irazú fit into one day?
They sit on opposite sides of the valley: Poás about 50 km northwest, Irazú about 45 km east through Cartago. Named operators sell each as a half or full day of its own. Two days is the honest plan. 16, 14, 8
Which volcano should I pick with only one morning?
Irazú, if certainty matters: Costa Rica's tallest volcano at 3,432 meters, and the four closures traced on this page since 2017 all belong to Poás. Poás, if the wide crater and its acid lake are the point, and the portal shows the park open on your date. 14, 4, 3
What does a rental car add beyond the daily rate?
Costa Rican law puts third-party liability cover inside every rental. Adobe's own policy covers USD 20,000 of property damage with a USD 1,130 deductible, and USD 100,000 for injury with zero deductible, and the company holds a refundable deposit of USD 1,000, or USD 1,130 with tax, on a credit card. Fuel is a national price: CRC 707 a liter since 10 September 2026. 17, 9
Is there a public bus to Poás?
No transit authority publishes a Poás bus schedule. One travel guide describes a weekend-only chain: TUASA from San José to Alajuela, then COOPETRANSI up to the park, about CRC 1,500 round trip. Confirm it with the operators before you build a day around it. 16
