Where to eat in San José, Costa Rica: Barrio Escalante, priced

Menu prices read off the restaurants' own pages on 25 September 2026, the two charges Costa Rican law adds to every table bill, and an honest gap where the casado price should be.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The one Escalante menu published online runs CRC 9,400 to CRC 17,400 for a main course, about $20.76 to $38.43 at the central bank's 24 September 2026 rate. Small plates at Isolina start at CRC 3,700. 1, 2
  • Two charges land on every table bill. A 10 percent service charge, set in law since 1972, then 13 percent sales tax. On a CRC 10,000 plate that is CRC 12,430 to pay. Some menus have already put both inside the price; where a menu is silent, add about a quarter. 3, 4
  • The top of the range sits in Barrio Amón, next door: an eight-course tasting menu at CRC 66,000 a person, CRC 98,000 with a wine pairing, tax and service inside the price. 5, 2
  • No soda in the neighborhood publishes a casado price online, so read the board and ask before you sit. Escalante's cheapest published plate is CRC 3,700, about $8.17, which is the ceiling to carry into a soda. 1, 2
  • The CDC posted a hepatitis A outbreak notice for Costa Rica on 18 September 2026, most cases in San José province, at Level 1. Open its page before you travel. 6

Where to eat in San José: start in Barrio Escalante

Calle 33 is where San José goes out to eat. The street is thick with bars and places to eat, from vegan cafes to brewpubs, all of it inside walking distance of the downtown sights. 7 Around that one strip the blocks go quiet fast: Barrio Escalante and neighboring Los Yoses are upper-middle-class streets of older, larger houses. 8

The eating is dense enough that hotels give directions by it. Hotel 1492 tells guests the Centro Gastronómico La Luz, a group of restaurants and lounge bars, sits about 50 meters from its door. 9 An apartment-suite property on the same streets sells the barrio as San José's hub for gastronomy, art and urban life. 10

This guide prices that. Two kitchens in and beside the neighborhood publish their own menus, and those figures carry everything below. Costa Rican law then adds two charges to the sticker.

Sodas, the small family lunch counters that feed the city on a weekday, are the cheap end, and they are also the hardest prices in the country to pin down. If San José is one stop in a longer loop, the two-week Costa Rica itinerary says how many nights to hold here.

What does a casado cost in a San José soda?

The budget benchmark for the whole country, and the one price this guide leaves blank.

A casado is the plate every Costa Rican budget starts from. Rice, black beans, fried plantain, a cabbage salad with lemon and salt, an egg, and chicken or beef cooked with onion. Sodas serve it at midday and price it on a board by the register, which is exactly why it stays off the internet.

Every soda checked in central San José on 25 September 2026 lives online only inside TripAdvisor, Uber Eats or Facebook, and all three shut the door: a 403, a bot challenge, a login wall. Search snippets throw colón figures around freely. The colón figures floating in search results have nothing behind them, so the casado price stays blank here and you get it the way Costa Ricans do - off the board, or by asking.

The verified prices still give you a ceiling. The cheapest single plate on Isolina's own menu, an arracache hashbrown, is CRC 3,700, about $8.17. A soda casado sits under that, which makes CRC 3,700 the number to carry in and a signal to ask the price when the board is blank. 1, 2

  • Ask the price of the casado del día before you sit. The protein changes by the day and the figure often lives on a chalk board instead of a printed menu.
  • Expect the 10 percent service charge. Table service in a soda carries it by law, itemized on the bill as Servicio 10%. 3
  • Pay in colones. The central bank's wholesale rate on 24 September 2026 was CRC 452.82 to the dollar, and any dollar price quoted across a counter will sit wider than that. 2

Which Barrio Escalante restaurants are worth the walk?

Five names anchor the neighborhood, and one of them publishes its prices. El Financiero ranked Barrio Escalante's restaurants on 9 July 2026 from Tripadvisor listings with 50 reviews or more. Its picks include Cafeoteca on Avenida 5, a coffee bar pouring more than 15 coffees from eight growing regions. 11

Doma Escalante is on the same list, a farm-to-table kitchen in a historic house on the El Farolito roundabout, sharing its building with a fashion atelier, a florist and Latin American art. 11

Olio, 200 meters north of Bagelmans on Calle 33, is the oldest restaurant still working in Escalante, a Mediterranean tapas pub and wine bar. 11 Isolina, at Calle 33 and Avenida 1, posts a full menu with figures on it, which makes it the one address here you can budget to the colón before you walk in. 1

Doma Escalante and Olio's own domains failed on 25 September 2026 (a Wix reconnect page and a DNS failure); Cafeoteca's own domain was not checked this session, so no price is attached to any of the three names. Isolina's figures below are read from its own menu page.

Isolina's menu is the neighborhood's price list. Small plates run CRC 3,700 to CRC 10,200. Main courses run CRC 9,400 for the cheapest to CRC 17,400 for a New York steak. One small plate and one main come to CRC 13,100 at the bottom of the menu and CRC 27,600 at the top: about $28.93 and $60.95. 1, 2

Dollar figures convert at the Banco Central de Costa Rica MONEX weighted-average rate, CRC 452.82 per US dollar on 24 September 2026. That is a wholesale rate; a card or a cash exchange will land wider. Isolina's menu page carries no date and says nothing about tax or service, so ask whether the two charges in the next section are already inside these figures. Two weeks of meals adds up: the two-week Costa Rica cost breakdown sets food beside transport and rooms.

Why is the bill higher than the menu price?

Two charges land on every table bill in Costa Rica, and both are law. A 1972 statute, reformed on 21 December 2012, requires restaurants, bars, sodas and similar places with table service to add 10 percent to each table's bill, calculated before sales tax and itemized as Servicio 10%. The same law bars the employer from keeping any of it for breakage or house costs. 3 Sales tax, 13 percent, then applies to the meal. 4

Run the two in order on a round number and the arithmetic is plain. A CRC 10,000 plate picks up CRC 1,000 of service, which makes CRC 11,000, then CRC 1,430 of tax, for CRC 12,430 to pay. That is about $27.45 against $22.08 for the sticker, and 24.3 percent added. 3, 4, 2

Illustrative arithmetic on two real rates, run on a round CRC 10,000 to keep the steps visible. The law calculates the 10 percent before sales tax; the order in which a given restaurant applies the tax to that sum is worth a glance at your receipt. The combined 24.3 percent is this guide's multiplication of the two rates, not a figure a Costa Rican authority publishes.

Some menus have already done this for you. Restaurante Silvestre states on its own carta that its prices are in colones and include both the 13 percent sales tax and the 10 percent service. 5 Where a menu says nothing either way, treat the sticker as pre-charge and add about a quarter in your head.

The high end sits in Barrio Amón

The priciest menu this guide could open in San José is in Barrio Amón, not Escalante. Avenida 11 at Calle 3A, number 955: a walk or a short ride from Escalante, a different neighborhood, with its own streets of century-old coffee-boom houses. Roundups file it under Escalante. The map files it under Amón. 5

The kitchen serves one eight-course tasting menu, Optica, at CRC 66,000 a person, about $145.75. An alcohol-free pairing adds CRC 16,000, about $35.33. Either of the two wine pairings adds CRC 32,000, about $70.67. Two people on the menu with a wine pairing each come to CRC 196,000, about $432.84, with tax and service already inside the figure. 5, 2

Whether eight courses are worth $145 a head is yours to decide. What the number fixes is the top of the range. A city where a plate costs $8 and an evening costs $216 is a city you can eat well in on whatever budget you bring. 1, 5

Check the kitchen is still there

San José's restaurant listings age badly, and the aggregators have stopped noticing. Frommer's and TripAdvisor still place Al Mercat on Avenue 13 in Barrio Escalante. It moved around 2022 to Copey de Dota, a mountain village roughly two hours from the city, where a Costa Rican food blog covering the village describes it working. 13

The restaurants' own sites are in worse shape. Of six Escalante-area domains opened on 25 September 2026, two answered with real content. One timed out, one failed at DNS, one returned a Wix reconnect page and one served a suspended-account screen. Four minutes of checking saves a taxi.

  1. Search the name with the neighborhood, then read the date

A ranking from July 2026 beats a roundup with no date on it. El Financiero's list is dated 9 July 2026 and says what it was built from. 11

  2. Open the restaurant's own page

A dead domain, a suspended account or a Wix reconnect notice is your answer. Four of the six Escalante-area sites tried for this guide showed one of those.

  3. Check this week's posts

An account posting this week is the cheapest proof a kitchen is open. Opening hours on an aggregator are a guess with a timestamp.

  4. Have the hotel desk call ahead

A front desk books a table in Spanish faster than you will. Hotel 1492 sends guests 50 meters to the Centro Gastronómico La Luz, which is a short list to work through on a first night. 9

Two nights of eating, priced

Split the city by neighborhood and the money sorts itself. One night on Calle 33 at Escalante prices, one night on the tasting menu in Amón, coffee in between. The figures below are the published menu prices, converted at the 24 September 2026 rate. 1, 5, 2

With less time: With one night, keep Escalante and spend the tasting-menu money on three more plates and a bottle.

Two people eating the cheapest Isolina pair together spend CRC 26,200, about $57.86, before the service charge and tax - CRC 13,100 each. The same two ordering the priciest pair together spend CRC 55,200, about $121.90 - CRC 27,600 each. One tasting menu for two with wine is CRC 196,000, about $432.84, charges included. The Costa Rica travel hub collects the rest of these guides. 1, 5, 2

Is it safe to eat in San José right now?

One dated notice belongs in your planning. On 18 September 2026 the CDC added a hepatitis A outbreak notice for Costa Rica at Level 1, Practice Usual Precautions, with most cases reported in San José province. That was a week old when this guide was researched. 6

Past the notice, the ordinary rules hold. Eat where the lunch crowd is. Pay in colones. Keep the receipt, because the Servicio 10% line on it is the law working and anything above it is yours to decide. 3 Staying longer than a holiday? The Costa Rica digital nomad requirements guide covers the income evidence and insurance a longer stay asks for.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget for food in San José?

Build it from plates you can see priced. One small plate and one main at Isolina is CRC 13,100 to CRC 27,600, about $28.93 to $60.95, before the service charge and tax. Coffee, a soda lunch and drinks sit on top. No soda in the neighborhood publishes its casado price, so leave room for it and read the board at the counter. 1, 2

Is Barrio Escalante expensive?

Its published main courses run CRC 9,400 to CRC 17,400, about $20.76 to $38.43, and the two legal charges add 24.3 percent where a menu has left them out. Escalante is a residential neighborhood of older, larger houses whose main street turned into a dining strip, so it prices like a city district and walks like a quiet one. 1, 8, 7

Do I tip in Costa Rica?

A 10 percent service charge is already on the bill by law, itemized as Servicio 10%, calculated on the table's total before sales tax, and the employer may keep none of it. Anything above that is voluntary and yours to judge. 3

What is a soda, and what is a casado?

A soda is a small, usually family-run lunch counter serving Costa Rican plates. The casado is its standard: rice, black beans, fried plantain, cabbage salad, an egg and a protein, served at midday. Prices live on a board by the register, which is why they rarely reach the internet.

Is Al Mercat still in Barrio Escalante?

It moved. Travel sites still list it on Avenue 13 in the neighborhood, and it relocated around 2022 to Copey de Dota, a mountain village roughly two hours from San José. Its own site timed out on 25 September 2026, so treat the move as well corroborated and the address as one to confirm before driving. 13

Which Barrio Escalante restaurants publish their prices?

One of the five named here. Isolina posts a full menu with figures on it. Cafeoteca, Doma Escalante and Olio come from a dated local ranking with no prices attached. Two of the three - Doma Escalante and Olio - have known domain failures (a Wix reconnect page and a DNS failure); Cafeoteca's own domain was not checked this session. 1, 11

Which exchange rate should I use for colones?

The Banco Central de Costa Rica's MONEX weighted average, CRC 452.82 per US dollar on 24 September 2026, is what this guide converts at. It is a wholesale rate, so a cash exchange or a card will land wider. The Federal Reserve's H.10 release covers 23 currencies and the colón is absent from it, which is why the central bank's own page is the one to read. 2, 12
