Start with the calendar, not the day of the week
By seven in the morning the water south of San Miguel has already told you what kind of day it is. One white wall of a ship at Puerta Maya, or three, or none. Cozumel is 30 miles long, sits 12 miles off the Yucatán mainland and has one town, so the answer changes the whole island by breakfast. 3
The answer is also published. Quintana Roo's state port authority, APIQROO, runs a live arrival calendar for Cozumel's three cruise terminals. Every ship appears by name with its terminal, its flag, its arrival time and its departure time, flagged Programado, Cancelado or Arribado. The archive runs back to 2010. 1
That calendar is the tool. Everything below is what it showed when MMT read it on 25 September 2026, plus the scale numbers the calendar itself does not total. Use the dates as a worked example and then go read your own.
Which day has the fewest cruise ships in Cozumel?
Four empty Sundays, two six-ship Thursdays and two one-ship weekdays, all from one calendar window.
Four Sundays running carried no cruise arrival at all. Nothing at Punta Langosta, nothing at Puerta Maya, nothing at SSA México on 6, 13, 20 or 27 September 2026. The calendar skips from Saturday to Monday. 1
The weekdays hold the spread. Thursday 10 September 2026 carried six ships, and so did Thursday 24. Monday 14 September carried one, Carnival Breeze at Puerta Maya. Tuesday 15 September carried one, Radiance of the Seas at Punta Langosta. Same island, same month, six times the arrivals. 1
| Date | Ships scheduled | Terminals used |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday 6 September 2026 | 0 | none |
| Thursday 10 September 2026 | 6 | Punta Langosta 2, Puerta Maya 2, SSA México 2 |
| Sunday 13 September 2026 | 0 | none |
| Monday 14 September 2026 | 1 | Puerta Maya |
| Tuesday 15 September 2026 | 1 | Punta Langosta |
| Sunday 20 September 2026 | 0 | none |
| Thursday 24 September 2026 | 6 | all three, an almost identical lineup to the 10th |
| Sunday 27 September 2026 | 0 | none |
APIQROO prints 85 ships for September 2026 on the same page. Count the dates you care about off the calendar's own rows rather than working from the monthly total. 1

Five named dates from one calendar window, not a year-round rule. The gap between a Thursday and a Monday is the whole planning decision. Source: 1
Two Thursdays is two data points. The shape holds in a far busier week, though. Cozumel opened 2026 with 30 ships booked for 5 to 11 January, and regional press reading the same APIQROO calendar named Tuesday through Thursday as the heaviest stretch of it. 6
Sunday is light rather than closed. APIQROO's own November 2021 release announced Le Champlain, Disney Wonder and Crystal Serenity at Punta Langosta on Sunday 21 November, the first Sunday arrivals since tourism restarted after the pandemic. Sundays fill when a season asks them to. 7
How crowded do the ships actually make it?
San Miguel had 84,915 residents at the 2020 census, and one ship can put 6.5 percent of that number ashore in a morning. Symphony of the Seas, which called four times in the September 2026 window (a fifth call falls just outside it, on 2 October), carries 5,518 passengers at double occupancy. Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship afloat, called twice. 3, 8, 2, 9, 1
| Ship | Passengers, double occupancy | Passengers, maximum | Maximum as a share of San Miguel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Icon of the Seas (SSA México, 9 and 30 September) | 5,610 | 7,600 | 9.0% |
| Symphony of the Seas (SSA México, four calls) | 5,518 | 6,680 | 7.9% |
Shares calculated against San Miguel's 84,915 residents: 7,600 / 84,915 = 9.0%, 6,680 / 84,915 = 7.9%. Crew are on top of both passenger figures, 2,350 on Icon and 2,200 on Symphony. Cozumel municipality as a whole had 88,626 residents in 2020.
Year totals put the same point differently. Cozumel took 4,732,250 cruise passengers on 1,300 ship calls in 2025, up 2.3 percent on 2024's 4,623,000 across 1,281 calls. That averages 3,640 people per call and 12,965 a day spread evenly over the year, against a resident population under 90,000. 5, 3

Which terminal matters as much as which day?
Six ships downtown and six ships 5 miles south are different days. Punta Langosta stands in San Miguel itself, an 11-minute walk into town. Puerta Maya and the terminal APIQROO labels SSA México sit together to the south, a 10-minute taxi from the same downtown. 4, 1
| Terminal, as APIQROO names it | Also called | To downtown San Miguel | On site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terminal Punta Langosta | Punta Langosta | 11-minute walk | Quinta Avenida, San Miguel's own shops and restaurants |
| Terminal Puerta Maya | Puerta Maya | About 5 miles, 10-minute taxi | Two-storey mall with more than 50 outlets |
| Terminal SSA México | International Pier, International Cruise Terminal | About 5 miles, 10-minute taxi | Shopping beside Puerta Maya |
The naming mismatch is worth knowing before you cross-reference sources: cruise lines and travel press write 'International Pier' where APIQROO's calendar prints 'Terminal SSA México'. The fourth of Cozumel's five piers, the Fiscal Pier in San Miguel, takes the Playa del Carmen ferry and lands passengers tendered in from ships at anchor. 1, 3
One pattern held across every date read. Every Carnival ship in the window, plus Princess's Regal Princess, used Puerta Maya. Every Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC, Disney and Norwegian ship used Punta Langosta or SSA México. That is what the calendar showed, not a rule anyone publishes, and assignments change by sailing. 1
- A heavy Puerta Maya day loads the coast road and the southern beach clubs. Those passengers start 5 miles from the malecón and most of them take a taxi. 4, 1
- A heavy Punta Langosta day loads the malecón and Quinta Avenida. Eleven minutes on foot and the square is full. 4
- A ship at anchor tenders into the Fiscal Pier, in San Miguel beside the Playa del Carmen ferry dock. Same downtown, different queue. 3
- Read the terminal column, not just the ship count. Six ships spread two-two-two across three piers lands very differently from six at one.
When do the ships actually leave?
The assumption that town empties at six is out of date. Cozumel's mayor, José Luis Chacón, said in February 2026 that some calls this year extend to 10 p.m., which keeps shops and restaurants busy later. Departure time is now as much a planning number as arrival time. 10
The spread on a single day is wide. On Thursday 10 September 2026, Carnival Jubilee was due out of Puerta Maya at 16:00 and Celebrity Beyond out of SSA México at 19:30, a gap of 3.5 hours. Carnival ships across the window mostly left between 15:00 and 17:00; the other lines more often between 16:00 and 19:30. 1
Table view: A six-ship Thursday, hour by hour
| Item | Arrival (ETA) (h) | Departure (ETD) (h) |
|---|---|---|
| Radiance of the Seas, Punta Langosta | 6.25 h | 17 h |
| Symphony of the Seas, SSA México | 6.25 h | 16.75 h |
| Carnival Jubilee, Puerta Maya | 6.50 h | 16 h |
| Enchantment of the Seas, Punta Langosta | 7.25 h | 18 h |
| Regal Princess, Puerta Maya | 7.50 h | 18 h |
| Celebrity Beyond, SSA México | 10 h | 19.50 h |
Five of the six were tied up before eight in the morning. The last one stays until 19:30, which is why a late dinner downtown is not automatically a quiet dinner. Source: 1
Dive-industry writing puts a Cozumel call at 7 to 9 hours, docked by 8 a.m. and away around 5 p.m., leaving passengers a usable 6 to 7 hours ashore. The calendar is sharper than the rule of thumb, and the 3.5-hour gap between those two Thursday departures is exactly what a flat 5 p.m. hides. 11, 1
What the schedule changes for divers
Every dive at Cozumel is a day-boat dive, which puts the entire fleet on one clock. Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park bars vessels above a set size from operating overnight inside its boundaries, so the liveaboard model does not exist here. Boats leave the pier in the morning and come back the same afternoon. 11
On a six-ship Thursday that clock collides with the cruise clock: more boats leaving at once, more divers on the permanent moorings at Palancar and Columbia, more traffic at the dock. On a one-ship Monday the same reefs are the same reefs with a fraction of the boats. 11, 1
| Fee | MXN | USD |
|---|---|---|
| Marine Park fee, per diver per dive day | 217 | 12.58 |
| Quintana Roo cruise passenger right, per cruise passenger | 86.23 | 5.00 |
| Federal Derecho de No Residente, per cruise passenger since 1 August 2026 | 172.45 | 10.00 |
The park fee is collected at the dock before the first dive and funds enforcement, mooring-buoy maintenance and conservation work; every dive site carries a permanent mooring so boats do not anchor on the reef. Some operators fold it into the quoted price, others take it in cash. Conversions use the Federal Reserve H.10 rate of 17.2454 pesos per US dollar on 18 September 2026: 217 / 17.2454 = 12.58, 5 x 17.2454 = 86.23, 10 x 17.2454 = 172.45. The DNR rises to USD 15 on 1 July 2027 and USD 21 on 1 August 2028.

Price the rest of the week with MMT's Cozumel diving budget, and see how park charges compare elsewhere in marine park and conservation fees. For the wider trip, the Mexico travel guide is the place to start.
Is a quiet season the same as a quiet day?
No, and conflating the two is how a September Thursday surprises people. Dive operators describe September and October as the island's quietest months: hurricane season keeps enough travellers away that crowds thin and groups shrink. That describes independent visitors, not ships. 11
The calendar kept running through that quiet season. One to six ships called on most weekdays of the window read on 25 September 2026, including two six-ship Thursdays. A quiet month still has loud days in it. 1
Scale up and the contrast sharpens.
| Month | Ship calls | Average a day |
|---|---|---|
| January 2025 | 161 | 5.2 |
| December 2025 | 162 | 5.2 |
| September 2026 window | see the calendar | zero to six |
Both 2025 months topped the roughly 150 calls each saw in 2024. Eleven ships called at Cozumel for the first time in 2025, among them Star of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and MSC World America. 5
For a shoulder-season trip the other variable is the seaweed, which follows its own calendar entirely. MMT tracks it in the Riviera Maya sargassum season guide.
How do I plan a week around the schedule?
Twenty minutes with the calendar sets the whole week. The work is counting ships per date, reading the terminal column, and then putting the day you care most about on the lightest date you have.
Open the calendar for your month
Go to APIQROO's cruise programming page and select the month you travel. The archive runs back to 2010, so you can also check what the same week looked like last year. 1
Count the ships on each date
Write the number beside each day of your stay. In the window read on 25 September 2026 the range ran from zero to six, which is the difference between an empty malecón and a full one. 1
Put the big day on the lightest date
The dive charter, the Punta Sur trip, the long lunch downtown. In this window that meant a Sunday, a Monday or a Tuesday. 1
Re-check a week out
APIQROO marks entries Cancelado and Arribado as the week moves, and adds ships. The calendar you read three months ago is not the one you land in. 1
- 01Sunday and Monday: San Miguel2 nights
No ship at all was scheduled for Sunday 13 September 2026, and Monday 14 brought one, Carnival Breeze to Puerta Maya, 5 miles south. Downtown, the malecón and the Fiscal Pier are at their emptiest.
→ Ferry from Playa del Carmen into the Fiscal Pier, then walk into town. 1, 3 - 02Tuesday and Wednesday: the dive days2 nights
Tuesday 15 September 2026 showed one ship, Radiance of the Seas at Punta Langosta. Fewest boats competing for the moorings at Palancar and Columbia. Read the Wednesday beside it on your own dates before you commit.
→ Dive boats leave from the main pier and return the same afternoon; no overnight boats operate in the park. 1, 11 - 03Thursday: the six-ship day1 night
Six ships were scheduled for Thursday 10 September 2026, two at each terminal, and six again on Thursday 24. Downtown and the southern beach clubs both take the load, so take the day somewhere else.
→ All three cruise terminals sit on the west coast, so a taxi or rented scooter to the east side puts the day on the other side of the island from every arriving ship. 3, 1
With less time: With two nights, take a Sunday and a Monday and skip the Thursday entirely.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best day to visit Cozumel?
In the calendar window read on 25 September 2026, Sunday: four Sundays running had no scheduled cruise arrival at any terminal. Monday and Tuesday were next best, with one ship each on 14 and 15 September. Thursday was the day to avoid, at six ships. Check your own dates, because the pattern is one window rather than a published rule. 1
How do I find out how many cruise ships are in Cozumel on my date?
Open the live calendar APIQROO publishes at servicios.apiqroo.com.mx/programacion/ and pick your month. It lists each ship by name with its terminal, flag, arrival date and time, departure date and time, and a status of Programado, Cancelado or Arribado. It is continuously updated and searchable back to 2010. 1
Which Cozumel terminal will my ship use?
The calendar prints it beside each ship. Across the whole September 2026 window, every Carnival ship and Princess's Regal Princess used Puerta Maya, while Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC, Disney and Norwegian ships used Punta Langosta or SSA México. APIQROO's SSA México is the terminal other sources call the International Pier. 1, 4
Is September a quiet time to visit Cozumel?
For independent travellers, yes: it's one of the island's quietest months for crowds. For cruise traffic only relatively, since the calendar still showed one to six ships on most weekdays, so a slow month doesn't mean a slow day. 11, 1
Can I dive in Cozumel on a day my ship is in port?
Yes, and the timing is tight rather than impossible. A port call runs 7 to 9 hours and leaves a usable 6 to 7 hours ashore once you allow for being back at the pier about 30 minutes before departure, which suits a two-tank morning. Work from your ship's actual ETD on the calendar, not a generic 5 p.m. 11, 1
Do cruise passengers pay VISITAX in Quintana Roo?
No. Cruise passengers pay a separate state right of USD 5 per person under Article 51-Nonies of Quintana Roo's Ley de Derechos, collected by the cruise line with the ticket, and paying it exempts them from VISITAX. Mexico's federal Derecho de No Residente is a second, separate charge, USD 10 per passenger since 1 August 2026. MMT's VISITAX guide covers the land-arrival version. 12, 13
