An island town of 84,519 people, and a ship at the door
Two quiet hours at the start of the day, and what fills the other ten.
The first boat out of Cozumel leaves at 6 a.m., and the first boat out of Playa del Carmen leaves at 7. Both ferry docks sit on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, the waterfront avenue through San Miguel, a short walk apart. Two hours later a cruise ship is alongside. Those two hours are what this page is built around. 7, 10, 1
Cozumel is a working town before it is a port. Mexico's 2020 census counted 88,626 residents in the municipality and 84,519 of them in San Miguel, about 95 percent of the island's people in one grid of streets behind the waterfront. The airport moved 646,606 passengers in 2025, roughly 1,772 a day. 2, 11
This is Maya country in the present tense. Mexico's 2020 census counted 774,755 speakers of Maayat'aan, the Yucatec Maya language, across the peninsula this island belongs to. At the southern tip, a small Maya structure stands inside the state reserve the municipal parks trust runs. 12, 6
Every price below was read on 25 September 2026 from the agency, the park or the operator that collects it. Prices published in dollars appear as USD; peso prices converted for reference carry a $ sign instead. Dollar figures convert at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, the Federal Reserve's H.10 noon buying rate for 18 September 2026. Chankanaab and Punta Sur print dollars on their own pages, so those two stay in dollars. 4, 5, 6
How do you plan around Cozumel's cruise days?
A large ship most days, alongside from about 09:00 to 19:00, and three piers that drop passengers in two different places.
Through September 2026 a large ship was due alongside at 09:00 and away by 19:00 on most dates. MSC World America held that slot on the port calendar week after week, with other named vessels filling the gaps. Ten hours, most days. Before nine and after seven, the island is a different place. 1
Where the ship ties up decides how much of that lands on San Miguel. Punta Langosta sits on the town's own waterfront, within walking distance of downtown. Puerta Maya and the International Pier sit side by side about 2.5 km south, a taxi ride of roughly five minutes, and the largest ships use them. 1
| Pier | Where it sits | To downtown San Miguel | Who docks there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Punta Langosta | On San Miguel's own waterfront | walking distance | Ships taking the downtown berth |
| Puerta Maya | South of town, beside the International Pier | about 2.5 km | Large ships |
| International Pier | South of town, beside Puerta Maya | about 2.5 km | The largest vessels, Royal Caribbean and NCL among them |
Pier geography comes from a cruise-industry reference site. This page carries no 2026 arrival or passenger totals; Quintana Roo's port authority publishes those. 1
The reef park: 225 pesos a day, and no sunscreen
One fee, charged daily, for the reefs CONANP calls among the three most beautiful in the world.
Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park charges 225 pesos per person, per day, about $13.05. Seniors, pensioners, retired visitors, people with disabilities and children under 12 enter free. Students and teachers with a valid credential pay half. Dive shops and boat crews usually collect the fee and pass it to CONANP. 3, 4
The park hugs the island's west and south coast. CONANP's own page puts San Miguel 6 km from the nearest access point and runs the boundary from kilometer 6 of the South Coastal Highway to Punta Chiqueros on the eastern side. Two days in the water cost 450 pesos, because the fee renews daily. 3
CONANP calls this one of the three most beautiful reefs in the world, part of the Great Western Atlantic Reef Belt. Its named attractions are the coral reefs, El Cielo beach and the sunken ship C-53. The splendid toadfish, Sanopus splendidus, lives around Cozumel and nowhere else. 3
| Charge | Adult | Child 4 to 12 | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, CONANP | 225 MXN a day, about USD 13.05 | free under 12 | Reef access for snorkeling, diving and boat trips inside the park boundary |
| Chankanaab Adventure Park | USD 31 | USD 22 | Municipal park on the west coast, inside the reef park boundary |
| Punta Sur Eco Beach Park | USD 25 | USD 17 | State reserve, run by the municipal parks trust, more than 1,000 hectares at the island's south end |
CONANP prices in pesos. Both municipal parks print dollars on their own pages and say prices and exchange rates may vary, so the window total will differ from any conversion. Children under 3 enter both municipal parks free. At 17.2454 pesos per dollar, Federal Reserve H.10, 18 September 2026, USD 31 is about 535 pesos and USD 25 about 431. 3, 5, 6, 4

What are the best things to do in Cozumel?
One day in the water on the west side, one on the road down the east coast, and a charge for each.
Two days on Cozumel divide cleanly: one in the water, one on the east coast road. The reef park covers the first at 225 pesos. Punta Sur, a state reserve of more than 1,000 hectares with a lighthouse museum and a tower for watching crocodiles, sits where the two halves meet, at USD 25 an adult. 3, 6
- Snorkel or dive inside the reef park for 225 pesos a day. El Cielo beach and the sunken C-53 are the park's own named attractions. 3
- Give a morning to Chankanaab, USD 31 an adult. It sits inside the reef park boundary on the west coast, under the same municipal trust as Punta Sur. 5
- Drive the east coast, where the beaches are wild and the water is rougher. This is the side the crews clear by hand, and the side that takes a car or a taxi to reach from any pier. 13, 1
- Walk San Miguel before nine. The town holds 84,519 of the island's 88,626 residents, and both ferry docks stand on its waterfront avenue. 2, 10
- Price the diving on its own. Boats, tanks, nitrox and lodging make a separate budget; MMT works it out in the Cozumel diving budget.
The east coast pays for its emptiness in seaweed. Cozumel's sargassum lands mostly on that side, at the Chumul lookouts and Chen Río, where 54 workers clear 6 to 10 tons a day along up to 700 meters of beach. Turtle nests and environmental rules keep heavy machinery off that sand, so the work is done by hand. The island sat at yellow alert on 18 August 2026. 13
The west side usually runs clearer, and usually is the honest word. On 15 March 2026 a statewide monitoring snapshot put Cozumel's own El Cielo beach at moderate sargassum, alongside beaches in Playa del Carmen and Cancún. MMT tracks the months and the stretches of coast in the sargassum season guide. 14

How do you get to Cozumel without a cruise?
Two ferry operators from Playa del Carmen, about 11 miles of open water, and an airport that moved 646,606 passengers last year.
The crossing from Playa del Carmen covers roughly 11 miles of open Caribbean in 30 to 45 minutes. Ultramar showed 15 departures each way on 25 September 2026, first boat 7 a.m. from Playa del Carmen, last at 9 p.m., with the final return from Cozumel at 8 p.m. Winjet's last boat each way runs about an hour later. 15, 7, 16
| Operator and tier | One way (MXN) | Round trip (MXN) | Sanitation fee (MXN) | One way (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ultramar, Ultraplan | 80 | 160 | 24.37 | 4.64 |
| Ultramar, Premium Plus | 320 | 640 | 24.37 | 18.56 |
| Ultramar, First Class | 380 | 760 | 24.37 | 22.03 |
| Winjet, adult regular from Cozumel | 310 | 645 | 23.46 | 19 as published |
| Winjet, adult regular from Playa del Carmen | 335 | 645 | 23.46 | 21 as published |
Ultramar's dollar column converts at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, Federal Reserve H.10 for 18 September 2026. Winjet prints its own dollar prices, which imply a weaker peso, so those appear as published. Ultramar also lists a Quintana Roo resident fare of 190 pesos and an INAPAM senior fare of 100; Winjet lists a flat 110-peso INAPAM and disability fare. Winjet's sanitation charge applies only to departures from Playa del Carmen. Winjet's round trip is one leg in each direction, 310 plus 335. Both operators say schedules and rates change without notice. 7, 16, 4
Both operators leave Cozumel from Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, Ultramar from Terminal Marítima San Miguel and Winjet from Terminal Marítima Api. In Playa del Carmen they share one building at the foot of Quinta Avenida, which Ultramar calls Terminal Marítima NAVEGA and Winjet lists as 1 Sur y 5ta Avenida. 10
Flying in works too. Cozumel International handled 646,606 passengers in 2025, down 9.3 percent from 712,958 in 2024, a fraction of Cancún's traffic. Most readers land at Cancún, ride down the coast and take the boat. MMT prices that leg in the Playa del Carmen guide and sets the whole region in the Mexico travel guide. 11
Do cruise passengers pay VISITAX?
Two official sources, one carve-out, and a USD 5 charge already inside the cruise fare.
Quintana Roo's law gives cruise passengers their own, smaller charge: USD 5 a head, about 86 pesos, collected by the cruise line when the ticket is bought. Paying it exempts that passenger from VISITAX, the 293-peso right every other foreign visitor owes. Ferry and flight arrivals pay the full amount, about 3.4 times as much. 8, 4
Check which charge your arrival carries
Article 51-Nonies prices the cruise right at USD 5 per person at the itinerary's first Quintana Roo port, effective 1 January 2025, and says its payment exempts the passenger from the VISITAX article. 8
Read the state portal too, because it says something else
The official VISITAX site states the charge is owed by all foreign tourists visiting Quintana Roo regardless of their way of departure, and its FAQ names Cozumel outright. It makes no mention of the cruise carve-out. 9
Pay once, keep the code, and carry it either way
One payment covers the whole visit to the state, separate from every charge and fare on this page, and only visitax.gob.mx should take the money. MMT walks the form in the VISITAX guide. 9
So two official sources, one conflict. The law's text is explicit about the exemption; the tax office's own portal is explicit that the way you arrive changes nothing. A cruise passenger who pays anyway is out about $17. One who skips it on the law's authority may be asked for a code on the way home. Ask your cruise line what the fare covers. 8, 9, 4
A ferry day on Cozumel, priced
One foreign adult, a round-trip boat, the state tax and a day in the reef park.
A day trip from Playa del Carmen with one day in the reef park comes to 1,182.65 pesos, about $68.58, for one foreign adult, on Ultramar's Premium Plus tier. Ultraplan, the cheapest tier, brings the same day to 702.65 pesos, about $40.74. Three of those four lines land the moment you arrive. The fourth, the reef fee, is the one you pay again on a second day. 7, 8, 3, 4
| Line | What it covers | MXN | USD at 17.2454 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultramar ferry, Premium Plus | Round trip, Playa del Carmen to Cozumel and back | 640 | 37.11 |
| Municipal sanitation fee | Charged on top of the Ultramar fare | 24.37 | 1.41 |
| VISITAX | Quintana Roo state right, once a visit | 293.28 | 17.01 |
| Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park | One person, one day inside the reef park | 225 | 13.05 |
| A ferry day | Boat, tax and reef access | 1,182.65 | 68.58 |
Food, taxis, gear and a dive boat sit on top. This total uses Ultramar's Premium Plus tier; Ultraplan, the cheapest tier, would make the same day 702.65 pesos, about $40.74. A cruise passenger swaps the ferry and VISITAX lines for the USD 5 state cruise right already inside the ticket, and still meets the 225-peso reef fee on any snorkel or dive trip. Chankanaab at USD 31 or Punta Sur at USD 25 is a separate charge again. Dollars at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, Federal Reserve H.10, 18 September 2026. 8, 3, 5, 6, 4
Table view: What one adult pays on Cozumel, charge by charge
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Chankanaab park, adult admission | $31 |
| Punta Sur park, adult admission | $25 |
| Ultramar ferry, Premium Plus one way | $18.56 |
| State tax, ferry or flight arrival | $17.01 |
| Reef park, per person per day | $13.05 |
| State charge, cruise arrival | $5 |
The two highlighted bars are one idea charged two ways: a ferry or flight arrival pays the 293-peso state right, a cruise passenger pays USD 5 folded into the fare. Chankanaab and Punta Sur print dollars on their own pages; the other three are peso prices converted at the Federal Reserve's H.10 rate for 18 September 2026. Source: 5, 6, 7, 8, 3, 4
When to come, and what to keep in your phone
Three nights based in town, the seaweed calendar, and the one number that works anywhere in Mexico.
Three nights in San Miguel buy two early mornings in the water and one long day on the east coast. The town gives you the ferry docks, the shops and the plaza within a walk, and hands the middle of each day to the ship without argument. 2, 1

With less time: With one day, take the 7 a.m. boat, pay the reef fee once, and keep the afternoon for the east coast while the ship is still in port. 7, 3, 1
- Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November on NOAA's own dates for 2026, and the historical peak falls from mid-September into October. 18
- Sargassum is an east-coast story most of the year, and a yellow-alert one in August. Cozumel sat at yellow on 18 August 2026, with 6 to 10 tons a day coming off that coast by hand. 13
- The Nortes are the ferry risk, roughly late autumn through early spring. Afternoon sailings run rougher than morning ones. 15, 17
- 911 is the emergency number, free from any phone anywhere in Mexico, 24 hours a day, with bilingual operators. 19
- Treat reef fees as a real budget line. Five days in the water is 1,125 pesos a person. MMT gathers the world's conservation charges in marine park and conservation fees. 3
Cozumel pays back the traveler who works with the ship's timetable instead of against it. 1
Frequently asked questions
How much does a day in Cozumel cost?
On Ultramar's Premium Plus tier, a ferry day trip from Playa del Carmen for one foreign adult came to 1,182.65 pesos on 25 September 2026, about $68.58, once the sanitation fee, VISITAX and a day in the reef park are added to the round trip. The cheapest tier, Ultraplan, brings the same day to 702.65 pesos, about $40.74; the priciest, First Class, adds about 120 pesos to the Premium Plus total. Food, taxis and a dive boat are extra. 7, 8, 3, 4
Do I pay VISITAX if I arrive on a cruise ship?
Quintana Roo's Law of Rights says a cruise passenger pays a USD 5 state right at the itinerary's first port in the state, collected by the cruise line at ticket purchase, and that paying it exempts them from VISITAX. The state's own VISITAX portal says the charge is owed by all foreign tourists regardless of their way of departure and names Cozumel. Ask your cruise line what the fare covers, and carry a code if the answer is vague. 8, 9
What can you do in Cozumel without booking a tour?
Walk San Miguel before the ship arrives, snorkel inside the reef park for 225 pesos a day, take the coast road to Punta Sur for USD 25 an adult, or give a morning to Chankanaab for USD 31. The east coast beaches north of Punta Chiqueros sit outside the marine park. 3, 6, 5
Who collects the 225-peso marine park fee?
CONANP itself does not sell this online: the dive shop or boat operator collects the 225 pesos on the day and passes it to the park, so it should already be itemized in a quoted trip price. If a quote does not mention it, ask before you book, since the fee applies per person, per day, and a two-day trip needs it twice. 3
Can I wear sunscreen in Cozumel's marine park?
No exception is listed for reef-safe or mineral sunscreen: CONANP's own rule is a blanket ban on sunscreen of any kind inside the park, full stop. Wear a long-sleeved rash shirt and a hat instead, and cover exposed skin before you get in the water rather than after. 3
When does the last ferry leave Cozumel?
On 25 September 2026 Ultramar's last sailing from Cozumel left at 8 p.m., with 15 departures each way that day and a 9 p.m. final boat out of Playa del Carmen. Miss it, and Winjet's last boat each way, roughly an hour later, is the fallback; miss both and the wait is until the next morning, so build a buffer into a tight cruise-day or connection rather than cutting the last sailing close. Both operators publish today's schedule and warn that times change without notice, so read the day you travel. 7, 16
When is the best time to visit Cozumel?
Outside the Atlantic hurricane season if you can, which NOAA puts at 1 June to 30 November for 2026, with the historical peak from mid-September into October. Sargassum hits the east coast hardest, with a yellow alert on 18 August 2026. Late autumn through early spring brings the Nortes, the cold-front winds that suspend ferries for hours at a time. 18, 13, 17
Is Cozumel worth visiting without a cruise?
Yes, and the choice is between paying once or paying by the day. A day trip from Playa del Carmen comes to 1,182.65 pesos, about $68.58: a 640-peso round-trip boat, the 24.37-peso sanitation fee, 293.28 pesos of VISITAX and one day in the reef park. Stay the night, and the ferry, the sanitation fee and VISITAX do not repeat: only the 225-peso reef fee does, for each extra day in the water. 7, 3, 8, 4
