One island, two different weeks
The first dive boats of the day leave from a dock, and where you sleep decides whose dock it is. Cozumel holds one city. San Miguel de Cozumel had 77,236 residents at the 2010 census, and it carries the ferry terminal, the piers, the restaurants and most of the island's dive shops. South of it, a line of hotels runs along the road to Chankanaab, each with its own pier over the reef. 1, 4
Pick the side first. The nightly rate follows from it, and so does the taxi budget, the airport transfer and how far you haul a wet gear bag. Choose town and you walk to dinner. Choose the south shore and you walk to the boat.
Every figure below comes from a hotel's own rate page, the park's own fee page or the Taxi Union's posted sheet, read on 25 September 2026. 3, 6, 5
How much does each side of Cozumel cost a night?
Six named places on the two sides of the island, three of them with a posted rate, read 25 September 2026.
Town holds the low end, and the gap is about $40 a night before tax. Stingray Villa is an adults-only guest house with four suites in downtown San Miguel, built for diving couples: a dedicated rinse tank, a drying line, a five-minute walk to the sea and fifteen minutes to the ferry terminal. Its direct-booking rate is $89 a night. 2
On the south shore, Casa del Mar Cozumel posts $129 for a basic standard room in low season and $155 for an ocean view, before 21% tax. Its address is Carretera a Chankanaab Km 4, two and a half miles south of downtown, under five minutes from the Paraiso reef. 3
| Where | Named case | Posted rate (USD per night) | With 21% tax (USD) | What it puts you beside |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Miguel town | Stingray Villa, 4 suites, adults only | 89 direct | None posted | 5 minutes on foot to the sea, 15 to the ferry |
| San Miguel town | Casa Mexicana, boutique on the malecon | Widget only | - | Steps from the ferry terminal, restaurants, dive shops |
| San Miguel town | Hacienda San Miguel, 11 studios and suites | Not listed | - | Half a block off the malecon, 4 blocks from the ferry pier |
| South shore | Casa del Mar, standard room, low season | 129 | 156.09 | Its own pier, 2.5 miles south of downtown |
| South shore | Casa del Mar, ocean view, low season | 155 | 187.55 | Same pier, Paraiso reef under 5 minutes away |
| South shore | Fiesta Americana, 102 rooms and 58 suites | Widget only | - | Its own pier at Km 7.5, all-inclusive |
Casa del Mar's posted tables run from 11 April 2026 through 22 September 2027 for the Basic Standard Room and through 22 December 2027 for the Ocean View Room; the tax column multiplies the posted rate by 1.21. Stingray Villa's $89 is its direct-booking rate, and its page states that a direct booking carries no cleaning or platform fee. Stingray Villa's page posts no separate tax line, so the $89 is the figure it advertises. Casa Mexicana and Fiesta Americana price only through a dated booking widget, so this table carries no nightly figure for either. Hacienda San Miguel appears on the municipal tourism office's own directory, which lists rooms and location and omits price.
Table view: Seven nights, posted rates, one named case on each side
| Item | Value (USD) |
|---|---|
| Town guest house, $89 | $623 |
| South shore standard, $129 plus tax | $1,092.63 |
| South shore ocean view, $155 plus tax | $1,312.85 |
The town bar is 89 times 7. The south-shore bars are 129 and 155, each times 1.21, times 7. A standard week on the south shore costs $469.63 more than the same week in town, a 75.4% premium for a shorter walk to the boat. Source: 2, 3
Read the tax line before you compare. Casa del Mar's posted rates exclude 21% tax, so $129 becomes $156.09 and $155 becomes $187.55 a night. Stingray Villa prices 14 nights at $1,246 booked direct against $1,490 through a platform, a $244 difference on the same two weeks. 3, 2
Cozumel dive resort vs town: who picks you up where?
A south-shore hotel pier can put the boat at the end of your own hotel's dock. Salty Endeavors, a Cozumel dive shop, lists more than 20 pier pick-up points around the island. Most are south-shore hotel docks: Casa del Mar, Fiesta Americana, Cozumel Palace, Iberostar, El Cid La Ceiba, El Presidente and the Westin each have their own. Town-side points include Aldora Pier, Fonatur Marina and Caleta Harbor. 4

Sleep at a hotel with its own pier and the walk to the boat is a corridor and a dock. Sleep in town and the same shop collects you at a marina or a shop dock a short walk or ride away. The dive is identical. The morning is what changes. 4
- Pier access has rules, and the hotel writes them. The shop's own page says some piers are free to use while others want a day-use permit or a drink from the bar, and a private owner can decide who lands there. 4
- Hotels with a pier are listed by name. Casa del Mar at Km 4 and Fiesta Americana at Km 7.5 both appear on that pier list, so a diver booked into either can ask for a door pickup. 4, 3, 11
- Town divers get a marina. Aldora Pier, Fonatur Marina and Caleta Harbor serve the town side. Ask your shop which one it uses before you choose a hotel. 4
- A hotel pier and a hotel boat are two different things. Casa del Mar partners with two shops, Cozumel Marine World and MexicanDiver Cozumel, so the pier belongs to the hotel and the boat belongs to the shop. 3
What does a taxi cost between town and the south shore?
The fare sheet is a ladder, and every rung is a hotel. The Cozumel Taxi Union's posted zone rates, approved in 2016 and still displayed, step up with distance south: 75 pesos to the nearest hotels, 95 pesos to Casa del Mar, 120 pesos to Fiesta Americana, 260 pesos to Iberostar. Each fare covers up to four passengers, luggage included. 5
| From downtown to | Fare (MXN) | Fare (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| El Cantil, Palace, Scuba Club, Hotel Cozumel, Caletita | 75 | 4.35 |
| Blue Angel, Villablanca, Casa del Mar, Park Royal, El Cid, International Pier | 95 | 5.51 |
| Money Bar, Landmark, Fiesta Americana | 120 | 6.96 |
| Iberostar | 260 | 15.08 |
| The airport, from a hotel in town | 102 | 5.91 |
| The airport, from a south-zone hotel | 200 to 400 | 11.60 to 23.19 |
Fares are per car for up to four passengers with luggage included. The sheet was approved in 2016 and is reproduced by an island visitor-information site; the union's own rate page was unreachable on the research date. Dollar figures divide each peso fare by 17.2454 pesos to the dollar, the Federal Reserve H.10 rate dated 18 September 2026.
Table view: The taxi ladder south from downtown Cozumel
| Item | Value (MXN) |
|---|---|
| El Cantil, Scuba Club | 75 MXN |
| Casa del Mar, Blue Angel | 95 MXN |
| Fiesta Americana | 120 MXN |
| Iberostar | 260 MXN |
Distance south is the whole price. A hotel at the far end of the strip costs about 3.5 times the fare of one just past town, and the airport run costs two to four times as much once you sleep south of downtown. Source: 5
Two rides a day add up, and the room rate is the bigger line. A return trip between downtown and Casa del Mar at 95 pesos each way is 190 pesos a day, or 1,330 pesos a week: about $77.12. That is what a south-shore week costs to visit town for dinner, on top of the $469.63 room premium. Sleep in town and the ride mostly disappears: dinner is a walk, a dive shop collects you at the marina. 5, 7, 4
Which Cozumel hotels are near the dive shops?
In San Miguel, the water is a few blocks from everything. Casa Mexicana Cozumel sits on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, the seafront road, and its own page puts it steps from the promenade, the ferry terminal, restaurants and dive shops, about 10 minutes from the airport. Hacienda San Miguel, an 11-studio colonial-style hotel, sits half a block off the same road and four blocks from the ferry pier. 9, 10

The town is the island's only city and the only place the mainland ferry lands. That makes it the base for anyone who wants a choice of dinner, a pharmacy, a market and a dive shop on foot. Crossing times and fares sit on the Playa del Carmen to Cozumel ferry page. 1
The airport sits a few kilometers northeast of town. Cozumel International, run by ASUR, handled 712,958 passengers in 2024 and 646,606 in 2025, a fall of 66,352 or 9.3%. A municipal tourism listing puts one downtown hotel 2 km from the terminal. Either way, it is a short ride. 12, 10
What everyone pays, wherever they sleep
The reef charges one price on both sides of the island. Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel takes 225 pesos per person per day, about $13.05 at 17.2454 pesos to the dollar on 18 September 2026. Children under 12, seniors, pensioners, retirees and people with disabilities are exempt. Mexican nationals and foreign residents pay half; students and teaching staff with ID pay a quarter. 6, 7
Most shops fold that fee into the boat price. A two-tank boat dive in Cozumel runs $95 to $135 per person across operators, and Pelagic Ventures prices its trips at $115 with the park fee and tax already inside, so the dock price is the price you pay. MMT's marine park and conservation fees page covers the wider pattern. 8, 6
| What | Price (MXN) | Price (USD) | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cozumel Marine Park entrance | 225 | 13.05 | Per person, per day in the park |
| Seven days of diving in the park | 1,575 | 91.33 | Per person, per week |
| Quintana Roo VISITAX | 293.28 | 17.01 | Once per foreign visitor, per trip |
VISITAX is 2.5 UMA under Article 51-Octies of Quintana Roo's Ley de Derechos; at the 2026 daily UMA of 117.31 pesos that is 293.275 pesos, commonly rounded to 293. The seven-day line multiplies 225 pesos by 7. Dollar figures divide by 17.2454 pesos to the dollar, Federal Reserve H.10 dated 18 September 2026.
One more number travels with you: 911, Mexico's national emergency line, free from any phone and staffed around the clock with bilingual operators. 089 takes anonymous crime tips and 078 reaches roadside help. 15
Whose island this is
Maya is a living language on this island and this coast. Mexico's 2020 census counted 774,755 speakers of Maayat'aan, Yucatec Maya, across the region that takes in Quintana Roo and Cozumel. A visitor's week here runs on a living language and the communities who speak it. 16
The island's own government keeps the hotel list. Cozumel's municipal tourism office publishes a lodging directory, and Hacienda San Miguel, the 11-studio hotel in the lodging table, is listed on it. 10
Who collects a fee is worth asking too. On the reef it is CONANP, the federal park agency, and its own page prints the 225 pesos beside the exemptions and the discounts. At a beach, a cenote or a private pier, someone else is collecting, so ask who takes the money, and carry cash. 6, 4
Does sargassum decide which side to pick?
The seaweed lands on the far side of the island from the hotels. Cozumel's sargassum concentrates on the east coast, where 54 workers clear 6 to 10 tons a day by hand because turtle nests and environmental rules keep machinery off those beaches. The island held a yellow alert on 18 August 2026. San Miguel and both hotel strips face west. 17
West-facing usually means clearer, with exceptions worth knowing. A March 2026 snapshot put El Cielo, a west-side beach, at moderate levels the same weekend other Quintana Roo beaches hit red. Timing changes week by week, and MMT's sargassum season page tracks it. 17, 18
Which one should you book?
Dive two tanks a day for a week and the south-shore pier earns its premium. Dive three days and town wins. The premium is $469.63 for seven nights at the standard rate, and coming into town for dinner adds about $77.12 in taxis on top. The pier buys the early alarm back; the town buys the dinners. 3, 2, 5, 7

With less time: With four nights, stay in town the whole time and take the marina pickup. A 95-peso taxi covers any south-shore dive you booked. 5
- Book town for dinner options, a pharmacy and the ferry on foot. It also holds the cheapest posted rate in this research, $89 direct. 2
- Book the south shore if you dive early and often. A hotel pier turns the morning pickup into a walk down a dock. 4
- Book town if you land late or fly out early. The airport run is 102 pesos from a town hotel and 200 to 400 from the south zone. 5
- Split the week and take both. Four nights in town, three on the pier, one 95-peso taxi in between. 5
Whichever side you pick, the island is one stop in a bigger plan. The Mexico travel guide covers arrival paperwork and the first day, and where to stay in Tulum runs the same comparison on the mainland.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to stay in town or at a Cozumel dive resort?
Town, by a wide margin in this research. A downtown guest house posts $89 a night booked direct, while a south-shore dive hotel posts $129 to $155 before 21% tax, which is $156.09 to $187.55 with it. Seven nights works out at $623 in town against $1,092.63 on the south shore at the standard rate. 2, 3
Will a dive shop pick me up if I stay in San Miguel town?
Yes. One Cozumel shop lists more than 20 pier pick-up points, and the town-side ones include Aldora Pier, Fonatur Marina and Caleta Harbor. The difference is a short walk or ride to a marina instead of a walk down your hotel's own dock. Ask your shop which pier it uses before you book a room. 4
Do I pay the Cozumel marine park fee separately?
Usually it is already in your boat price. The park charges 225 pesos per person per day, about $13.05 at the 18 September 2026 reference rate, and one operator states its $115 two-tank trip includes the park fee and tax. Across operators a two-tank boat dive runs $95 to $135, so ask what sits inside the number. 6, 8, 7
How much is a taxi from downtown Cozumel to the south hotel zone?
Between 75 and 260 pesos, depending on how far south the hotel sits, or about $4.35 to $15.08 at the 18 September 2026 rate. Casa del Mar is 95 pesos, Fiesta Americana 120, Iberostar 260. Each fare covers the car, up to four passengers with luggage, so four divers split one fare and a solo traveller pays the whole of it. 5, 7
How far is Cozumel airport from San Miguel?
A few kilometers northeast. A municipal tourism listing puts one downtown hotel 2 km from the terminal, the only distance an official page prints. The taxi is priced at 102 pesos from a hotel in town and 200 to 400 pesos from the south zone, which tells you more about the ride than the distance does. 10, 5
Why do some Cozumel hotels show no nightly rate here?
Because their own sites price only through a dated booking widget. Casa Mexicana Cozumel and Fiesta Americana Cozumel both describe their rooms and location in plain text and hold the price behind that widget, so this page carries a figure for neither. Aggregator numbers exist; they are quotes to confirm, so they stay off the page. 9, 11
Does sargassum affect which side of Cozumel I should stay on?
Rarely, because the seaweed gathers on the east coast and every hotel option here faces west. Crews clear 6 to 10 tons a day by hand on the eastern beaches, and the island held a yellow alert on 18 August 2026. A March 2026 snapshot did put the west-side beach El Cielo at moderate levels, so check the current reading before you pay for a beach. 17, 18
What language do people speak in Cozumel?
Cozumel sits in Quintana Roo, on a peninsula where Maya people live and work today. Mexico's 2020 census counted 774,755 speakers of Maayat'aan, Yucatec Maya. Menus, place names and the businesses you spend money with carry that. When a beach, a reef or a cenote charges a fee anywhere in the region, ask at the gate who collects it, and carry cash. 16
