Cozumel snorkeling from shore: beaches, fees and when to take a boat

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

September 2026 prices from the parks, beach clubs and operators themselves, the fee every swimmer owes, and a worksheet for one day in the water.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • The marine park charges 225 Mexican pesos a person a day, about USD 13.05, and it applies to everyone who enters the water, snorkelers included. Three island operators charge it, two in pesos and one in dollars. 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Chankanaab is the walk-in option with a posted price: USD 31 for an adult, USD 22 for a child aged 4 to 12, free under 3, open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A snorkel set is USD 15 for the day. 5
  • A chair on the sand at Playa Palancar is USD 25, reserved a day ahead, with check-in before 11:00 a.m. Add the park fee and the day is USD 38.05. 6, 4
  • Colombia, Palancar and the El Cielo sandbar are boat water. A 4-hour trip with Cozumel Snorkel Center starts at 1,000 pesos, about USD 57.99, which makes the boat day roughly USD 33 dearer than a chair on the sand at Playa Palancar. 7, 4
  • Sunscreen of every kind is banned inside the park. Operators hand you the workaround: wear a rash guard and stay 1.5 meters off the coral. 2

The reef starts a short swim out

At Dzul-Ha the coral sits a few steps off the sand, and the fish show up before you have your mask on. Cozumel's headline reefs lie offshore in deep water, on a drift built for dive boats. The shallow ones lie close enough for an afternoon, a rented mask and a beach chair. 8, 9

This page prices that version of the island: the beaches you walk into, the fee every swimmer owes, and the day a boat earns its money. Every figure below was read on the operator's own page on 25 September 2026, in the currency that page prints.

One line catches most first-timers out. The marine park bills per person, per day, and a snorkeler pays the same as a diver with two tanks. MMT follows that charge across the world's dive destinations in marine park and conservation fees. 3, 1

How much is the Cozumel marine park fee?

Three named operators on the island, one figure, collected in cash at check-in. The government's own page is a decade stale.

The fee is 225 Mexican pesos a person a day, about USD 13.05 at 17.2454 pesos to the dollar. The shop in the table below that quotes pesos collects it in cash at check-in, on the park authority's behalf. Sand Dollar Sports prints USD 13 and dates the rise to 1 January 2026. 1, 2, 4

Cozumel Snorkel Center answers the question snorkelers actually have. Its own help page puts the daily charge on every single person who enters the water, and says it sits outside the base ticket price. You pay at check-in and wear a dated wristband for the day. 3

Peso figures converted at 17.2454 pesos per US dollar, the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate for 18 September 2026: 225 pesos is USD 13.05. The charge repeats every day you swim and sits on top of any trip or admission price.

The legal text behind it names Cozumel's reef zones and settles who owes the money. CONANP's Article 198 page lists Arrecifes Maracaibo, Punta Sur, El Islote and Chunchaka'ab, and puts the payment duty on the permit holder running the trip. Swim without one and the duty falls on you: la obligación del pago será de cada individuo. 10

That page carries a gap worth knowing. It was last revised on 2 March 2017 and prints no current peso amount for the tier that covers Cozumel, and the government's main page on the park could not be checked. The live figure here is what three operators collect today. 10, 1, 3

Where can you snorkel Cozumel from shore?

Four west-side spots with a reef inside swimming range. Two post a price; two ask you at the door.

The island's sheltered side is the shore-snorkel side, and it runs south from town along the Carretera Costera Sur. Chankanaab has a gate and a posted price. Playa Palancar sells a chair. Money Bar at Dzul-Ha and the Villa Blanca shallows off Tikila Beach Bar are places you walk up to and ask. 5, 6, 8, 9

Access prices as printed on each operator's own site on 25 September 2026. The 225-peso park fee is extra on every line. Money Bar's site publishes no entrance charge and no gear rate; the Villa Blanca depths come from PADI's own dive-site page, which lists moray eels, stingrays, parrotfish and eagle rays there.

Money Bar is the picture most people have of shore snorkeling here: reef in a few steps, gear on site or your own, loungers on a sun deck. What its site leaves out is the money. Treat the entry price and the rental rate as questions for the door. 8

The Villa Blanca shallows reward a swimmer with a little range. PADI's dive-site page puts the reef 5 to 10 minutes out from the beach, starting at 6 meters and dropping to 11, which keeps it inside snorkel viewing. Divers using the same water pay the same daily fee. 9, 3

How much does Chankanaab cost?

USD 31 for an adult, USD 22 for a child aged 4 to 12, free under 3. Chankanaab is run by Cozumel's own parks trust, and admission alone covers parking, bathrooms, dressing rooms, showers, hammocks, beach chairs, a life vest and the inlet swimming area, plus the tropical garden above the water. 5

The add-ons are priced plainly too. A snorkel set, meaning mask, fins and a safety vest, is USD 15 for the day, out at 9:00 a.m. and back by 3:45 p.m. A shore dive from the beach is USD 45 with a certification and USD 65 without, booked at one of four dive shops on the sand, over sunken statues under 6 meters. 5

Hours decide the plan. The park opens Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., which leaves Sunday for Palancar, Dzul-Ha or a boat. Arrive near opening: the park closes at 4:00 p.m., so an 8:00 a.m. start is the longest day in the water the gate allows. 5

What one day in the water adds up to

Six versions of the same day, per person, with the park fee shown as its own line every time.

A shore day with your own mask is the park fee and a beach: USD 13.05 plus whatever the club charges. Chankanaab with rented gear is USD 59.05. The 4-hour boat to the famous reefs is USD 71.03 with the fee included, USD 57.99 above the cheapest shore day. 5, 6, 7, 4

The park fee is the same 13.05 inside every bar. The boat moves the total most, then the gate, then the gear. A traveler with a mask in the bag and a week on the island saves most by owning the gear and paying only the fee. Source: 5, 6, 7, 1, 4

Two habits keep the total down. Bring your own mask and fins, which turns USD 15 a day into one packed kilogram. And swim on fewer, longer days: the fee repeats daily, so four half-hearted mornings cost the same in fees as four full ones. MMT prices the tank version of this island in the Cozumel diving budget. 5, 3

When is a boat trip worth it?

Colombia, Palancar and the El Cielo sandbar are boat water, and no swim from the beach reaches them. Cozumel Snorkel Center runs its own 4-hour trip to all three from 1,000 pesos, about USD 57.99, and a 4-hour catamaran turtle tour from 1,200 pesos, about USD 69.58. 7, 4

Playa Palancar is where the two halves of this page meet. A day pass is USD 25 for a lounge chair and umbrella, food and drink extra, reserved 24 hours ahead with check-in before 11:00 a.m. at Km 19.5 of the Carretera Costera Sur. The club sits about 10 minutes from those reefs and sells the boat as an add-on. 6

  • Take the boat for the named reefs. Colombia, Palancar and El Cielo are the water in the photographs, and a 4-hour trip from 1,000 pesos is the price of entry. 7
  • Take the boat for the fee to be handled. An operator collects the 225 pesos at check-in and hands you the wristband, which settles the paperwork a solo swimmer has to sort out alone. 3, 10
  • Stay on shore for repeat days. Four shore mornings at Palancar cost USD 152.20 all in; four boat mornings cost USD 284.12. The reef at your feet gets better the second time you look at it. 6, 7, 4
  • Stay on shore with children in tow. Chankanaab bundles bathrooms, showers, chairs, a life vest and shallow inlet water with its ticket, and a child aged 4 to 12 is USD 22. 5

Book only boats and guides authorized by CONANP. That rule comes from the park's own visitor regulations, published in full by a Cozumel dive shop, and it is the cheapest piece of due diligence on the island. Ask to see the permit before you pay a deposit. 2

The rules that govern the reef

Sunscreen of every kind is banned inside the park, and the fix is a rash guard. Sand Dollar Sports publishes CONANP's nine visitor rules in full and recommends a long-sleeved top instead of lotion. Reef-safe labels on a bottle make no difference to this rule. 2

  1. Keep 1.5 meters of clear water between you and the reef.
  2. Leave the marine life to feed itself.
  3. Hire boats and guides authorized by CONANP.
  4. Anchoring is prohibited anywhere in the park.
  5. Hands, fins and knees stay off the coral.
  6. Every type of sunscreen is prohibited, to protect the corals.
  7. Watch the marine life without disturbing it.
  8. Fishing is prohibited.
  9. Gloves, knives and spear rods stay on land. 2

Dzul-Ha, Chankanaab and Chunchaka'ab are Maya names in daily use. CONANP's own statute lists Chunchaka'ab among the protected Cozumel zones, beside Punta Sur and El Islote, and the beaches carry names like Dzul-Ha and Chankanaab. Maya is spoken across the peninsula today, in the communities that live and work along this coast. 10

A rash guard earns its place twice over. It holds off the sun through a two-hour swim, and it keeps the coral safe from the one thing every reef rule is written about: a visitor drifting closer than they meant to. 2

When should you plan the swim?

Boat plans and storm season overlap. The National Hurricane Center puts the Atlantic season from 1 June to 30 November, peaking on 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Shore days survive a windy morning; boats to Colombia and El Cielo are the trips that get cancelled. 11

Sargassum on Cozumel is lopsided in the snorkeler's favor. The island's eastern coast takes the seaweed, where 54 workers clear 6 to 10 tons a day by hand because turtle nests rule out machinery. The west-facing hotel zone, where every beach on this page sits, is the calmer side. 12

Calmer has exceptions with dates on them. On 15 March 2026, statewide monitoring put Cozumel's own El Cielo at moderate sargassum the same weekend other Quintana Roo coasts hit a red alert. MMT tracks the season week by week in sargassum in the Riviera Maya. 13

A first morning without a tour

Five moves put you in the water by 9:00 a.m. with the fee paid and the gear sorted. This is the order that works for a visitor arriving by ferry with a mask in the bag. 5, 3

  1. Draw pesos the night before

The park fee is 225 pesos a person a day in cash, about USD 13.05, and it repeats every day you swim. Two people for four days is 1,800 pesos. 1, 4

  2. Pick the coast, then the gate

Chankanaab opens Monday to Saturday at 8:00 a.m. for USD 31, and Playa Palancar takes reservations 24 hours ahead for a USD 25 chair, with check-in before 11:00 a.m. Sunday belongs to Palancar or Dzul-Ha. 5, 6

  3. Sort out the fee for a shore swim

An operator collects the fee for its own customers, and the statute puts the duty on the individual swimming without one. Ask a dive shop or the park window how to pay it before you swim. 10, 3

  4. Dress for the ban on sunscreen

Pull on a rash guard at the hotel. Every type of sunscreen is prohibited in the park, and the shops on the beach recommend long sleeves. 2

  5. Swim out slowly and count your distance

Off Tikila Beach Bar the reef sits 5 to 10 minutes out at 6 meters, dropping to 11. Hold 1.5 meters of clear water over the coral and turn back with air in your lungs. 9, 2

Two lines of admin sit outside the water and catch people out. Quintana Roo bills a visitor tax, which MMT covers in the VISITAX guide, and the crossing from the mainland runs on a published timetable in the Playa del Carmen to Cozumel ferry page. The island fits a wider route in MMT's Mexico guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does snorkeling in Cozumel cost without a tour?

From USD 13.05 a day if you own your mask, up to USD 82.63 for the catamaran. The day-by-day worksheet above prices six versions. 1, 7, 4

Do snorkelers pay the Cozumel marine park fee?

Yes. Cozumel Snorkel Center's own help page puts the daily charge on every single person who enters the water, and prices it at 225 pesos or about USD 13 as of June 2026. Two dive shops on the island collect the same fee from their own customers, one quoting pesos and one quoting dollars. 3, 1, 2

What is the Cozumel marine park bracelet?

It is the dated wristband an operator issues when you pay the daily park fee at check-in, payable in cash or by card. It covers that day in the water. Swim on a second day and you pay the 225 pesos again. 3, 1

Who collects the fee if you snorkel alone from a beach?

CONANP's own statute puts the payment duty on the permit holder running a nautical-recreational service, and shifts it to the individual when no permit holder is involved. No operator or government page publishes a way for a lone shore snorkeler to pay, and no source names a booth or a ranger check. Ask a dive shop or the park window before you swim. 10

How much is admission to Chankanaab?

USD 31 for an adult and USD 22 for a child aged 4 to 12, with under-3s free. The park is closed on Sundays, and its own page never says whether that price already includes the 225-peso marine park fee or adds it on top. 5

Can you snorkel Palancar reef from the beach?

Palancar is boat water. Playa Palancar Beach Club sits about 10 minutes away by boat and sells the trip as an add-on to its USD 25 day pass, and Cozumel Snorkel Center prices a 4-hour run to Colombia, Palancar and El Cielo from 1,000 pesos. From the sand you get the beach, the chair and shallow water. 6, 7

Can you wear sunscreen in Cozumel's marine park?

The park's visitor rules prohibit every type of sunscreen to protect the corals, and the operators publishing those rules recommend a rash guard instead. The same list asks for 1.5 meters of distance from the reef and rules out gloves, knives and spear rods. 2

When is the best time to snorkel Cozumel?

Outside mid-August to mid-October if a boat matters to you: the National Hurricane Center puts most Atlantic storm activity in that window, with the peak on 10 September. Sargassum lands mainly on the island's east coast, away from these west-side beaches, though El Cielo read moderate on 15 March 2026. 11, 12, 13
