A 22-block avenue with the beach at the end
What the town is shaped like, and how fast it got that way.
Quinta Avenida starts a block back from the sand and runs about 22 blocks north, Calle 3 Sur to around 40th Street, shops and restaurants the whole way. Quintana Roo's state tourism board calls it the heart of the city. The stretch near the ferry pier is cheap and touristy. Around 12th Street it turns to nightlife. North of Constituyentes Avenue the trees come back and the prices climb. 11, 1
Walk south and the avenue ends at Parque Fundadores, the beachfront plaza by Juárez Avenue, built on one of the original fishing-village sites. Ultramar's Cozumel terminal stands at the same corner, on Av. Benito Juárez. That single corner is why the town works as a base: boats, beach and the main street all inside one walk. 1, 2

The speed of the place is worth holding in mind. At the end of 1992 this was a town of 10,594 residents with 500 hotel rooms in operation. The state legislature made it a municipality on 28 July 1993. By the 2020 census the municipality of Solidaridad counted 333,800 people, about 31.5 times the 1992 town (333,800 divided by 10,594). 12, 13
The ground under the avenue is a Maya place with a Maya name. Before the Spanish conquest of 1526 the settlement here was Xaman Ha, inside the cacicazgo of Ecab, the Maya jurisdiction that also held Tulum, Cobá, Tancah and Pole. Families displaced by the Caste War of 1847 to 1901 moved in from communities across the peninsula. 12
Maya is spoken here today. Mexico's 2020 census counted 774,755 speakers of Maayat'aan nationwide, 22,198 of them living in Solidaridad, about 6.65 percent of the municipality. Tseltal and Ch'ol speakers, largely families from Chiapas, live here too. The ruins down this coast are ancestral sites of communities with their own towns, cooperatives and visitor rules. 14, 13
How do you get to Playa del Carmen?
Cancún airport is the door for most trips. Three ways down the coast, priced on 25 September 2026.
The bus is the simple answer. ADO runs direct from Cancún to Playa del Carmen in about 1 hour 20 minutes, from 124 pesos, about $7.19, with departures every 15 to 30 minutes and services straight out of airport Terminals 2, 3 and 4. The train is faster and dearer, and it needs a shuttle at each end. 15, 16, 3
| Leg | Fare (MXN) | Fare (USD) | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADO bus, Cancún to Playa del Carmen | from 124 | 7.19 | About 1 hour 20 minutes, every 15 to 30 minutes, direct from airport Terminals 2, 3 and 4 |
| Tren Maya, Cancún to Playa del Carmen, international class | 197 | 11.42 | 46 to 52 minutes; national class 148, Quintana Roo resident 99, local, student and INAPAM 74 |
| Tren Maya Conecta shuttle | 55 | 3.19 | Station to the city center, Cancún airport, Plaza Las Américas and the Hotel Zone |
| ADO bus, Playa del Carmen to Tulum | 90 to 136 | 5.22 to 7.89 | Live fares quoted on the operator's own site for travel that day |
ADO's Cancún fare is its published starting price and rises at peak hours and on holidays. The Tren Maya fares are the figures announced when the Cancún to Playa del Carmen segment resumed on 15 August 2026, reported by press quoting the operator, because the official ticket seller blocked every request. The Tulum fares are live quotes for 25 September 2026, so treat them as a range. Dollars at the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate of 17.2454 pesos per dollar, 18 September 2026. 15, 16, 17, 3
Coming from the airport itself, MMT's Cancún travel guide prices the terminal buses and the taxis, and Tren Maya against the ADO bus and a rental car works through which one suits a two-week loop. 15, 16
Get pesos, in small notes
Buses, ticket windows and taquerías run on cash pesos. MMT's guide to ATM fees abroad covers what the withdrawal itself costs before you compare exchange counters.
Put data on the phone
Airalo's Mexico eSIM prices 10 GB over 30 days at $26.00 and 30 days of unlimited data at $62.00, which is enough to hold a map on Highway 307 and a ferry ticket on the phone. 18

What does the ferry to Cozumel cost?
One operator, one crossing, five prices on the same board.
Ultramar sells the same crossing at 80 pesos and at 380. Its cheapest tier, Ultraplan, is 80 pesos one way, about $4.64. First Class is 380, about $22.03, which is 4.75 times the Ultraplan fare for the same water. Baggage up to 25 kg travels free on every tier. 2, 3
| Fare tier | One way (MXN) | Round trip (MXN) | Round trip (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultraplan | 80 | 160 | 9.28 |
| INAPAM, senior cardholders | 100 | 200 | 11.60 |
| Quintana Roo resident | 190 | 380 | 22.03 |
| Premium Plus | 320 | 640 | 37.11 |
| First Class | 380 | 760 | 44.07 |
A municipal environmental sanitation fee of 24.37 pesos, about $1.41, is charged separately. Boats run roughly every 30 to 90 minutes from about 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in both directions. Tickets are sold without refunds and stay valid for six months from purchase on any available sailing. Dollars at the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate of 17.2454 pesos per dollar, 18 September 2026. 2, 3

Ultramar asks passengers to reach the terminal 30 minutes before departure, and the ticket is sold without refunds, so the half hour is worth keeping. Most people cross for the reef. A two-tank boat dive on the island runs 95 to 135 USD, and one operator prices its trips at 115 USD with the marine park fee and tax already inside. 2, 20
MMT's Cozumel diving budget prices a full day on the water, and marine park and conservation fees explains the charge that sits inside or outside a dive quote. Ask your operator which of the two it is before you pay at the dock. 20
Where can you swim in a cenote within 30 minutes?
Two parks on Highway 307, one with a full price board and one with none.
The nearest named cenotes are 20 to 25 minutes south on Highway 307, out past Xpu-Ha. Kantún-Chí publishes its whole board: four packages, each with a regular rate and cheaper tiers for advance foreign bookings, Mexican adults and Quintana Roo residents. The cheapest ticket on it is 425 pesos and the dearest is 1,785, a spread of 4.2 times. 7
| Package | What it includes | Regular (MXN) | Foreign advance booking (MXN) | Mexican adult (MXN) | Quintana Roo resident (MXN) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Travesías | Four self-guided cenotes plus a life jacket | 775 | 699 | 629 | 425 |
| Aguas Mágicas | Five guided cenotes with food | 1,229 | not published | not published | not published |
| Gruta Travesía | Guided underground river plus four unguided cenotes | 1,465 | not published | not published | not published |
| Grutaventura | Guided cave river, five guided cenotes, food and gear | 1,785 | 1,609 | 1,429 | 905 |
The park marks its board subject to change without notice. Children pay the adult rate from age 11 or 1.40 m in height, and the senior INAPAM rate matches the Quintana Roo resident tier on some packages. In dollars at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, 18 September 2026: the 775-peso ticket is about $44.94, the 425-peso resident tier about $24.64, and Grutaventura runs from about $52.48 to $103.51. 7, 3
Chikín-Já, the other park on this stretch, translates its name as water of the west. Its own site describes a cenote with snorkeling and diving, plus zip lines, bikes and a Maya ceremony among the paid activities, and it publishes no admission price; the activities page was down on 25 September 2026. Ask for the rate, and ask who leads the ceremony and which community they belong to. 21
Which tier are you buying?
The price of almost everything here depends on a tier you choose at the window, plus two charges you have no say in.
Read the bottom of the board before the top. The ferry, the train and the cenote gate all sell the same day at several prices, and the cheapest line is sometimes open to anyone and sometimes reserved for residents. Knowing which of the two you are looking at is the single biggest saving on this page. 2, 16, 7
Table view: The same day out, two tiers apart
| Item | Cheapest (MXN) | Top rate (MXN) |
|---|---|---|
| Cozumel ferry, one way | 80 MXN | 380 MXN |
| Tren Maya from Cancún, one way | 74 MXN | 197 MXN |
| Kantún-Chí, four self-guided cenotes | 425 MXN | 775 MXN |
| Kantún-Chí, cave river and five cenotes | 905 MXN | 1,785 MXN |
The left dot is the cheapest line on the board, the right one the top rate. On the ferry the cheap tier is Ultraplan, sold to anyone who asks for it. On the train and at the cenote park the low end is a resident or local fare, so a foreign visitor pays at or near the right-hand dot. That is the difference worth learning at the window. Source: 2, 16, 7
Two charges sit outside all of that. They are set by governments, they apply per person, and they arrive before you see the beach. Both peso figures below come from secondary reporting, because the official portals publish the rule and leave the amount off the readable page. 4, 6
- VISITAX, a reported 283 pesos, about $16.41. Quintana Roo's state tax on foreign tourists, set under Article 51 octies of the state's Law of Rights and payable only through the official portal at visitax.gob.mx. Copycat .com sites overcharge for the same receipt. 4, 5, 3
- The FMM entry permit, a reported 983 pesos, about $57.00. Mexico's federal tourist form for stays up to 180 days, waived at 7 days or less, and usually already folded into an air ticket as a Mexican tourism tax line. 6, 3
- Together, 1,266 pesos a person, about $73.41 (983 plus 283). For two adults that is 2,532 pesos before a single taco, so put it in the trip budget rather than the holiday. 5, 6, 3
- The ferry's sanitation fee, 24.37 pesos, about $1.41. Municipal, charged separately from the fare on every Ultramar ticket. 2, 3
El Fogón and the streets behind the avenue
The taquería people come here for, and where it actually is.
El Fogón sits a few blocks off Quinta Avenida on Avenida Constituyentes, and opens at 1 p.m. It runs until midnight, every day. The order people come for is tacos al pastor, carved off a vertical trompo, with queso fundido and bistec campechano alongside, aguas frescas cold on the counter and margaritas served large. 8
The distinction is real and worth stating precisely. A local news account of the Michelin Guide's 2024 Quintana Roo round lists three restaurants in the state with stars, two of them in Playa del Carmen, four with a Bib Gourmand, and thirteen more as recommended. El Fogón is on that third list. Recommended is a lighter mark than a star. 9
The wider point about eating here is the geography. Quinta Avenida is the promenade, priced like one. One street back, on Avenida 10, Avenida 15 and Constituyentes, the same evening costs less. MMT's Mexico travel guide sets the region's food against the rest of the country. 11
When should you go? Sargassum and storms
Two calendars decide what the water looks like, and they overlap in autumn.
Playa del Carmen led Quintana Roo for sargassum in 2026. By 18 September the city had 42,942 tonnes collected for the year against 30,454 in the municipality that holds Cancún, a lead of 12,488 tonnes. Its answer has been barriers: 2,600 meters of them at the start of the year, 5 kilometers as of early September, roughly 1.92 times as much, from Playa Cisne to Punta Esmeralda. 10
In September 2026 the Navy was studying about 10 kilometers more. Seaweed lands unevenly, so one stretch of sand can be thick with it while the next is clear, and the picture shifts within a day. The state runs a four-color signal for exactly that reason. Read it the morning you plan a beach day. 10, 22
- Green. No sargassum or very little. The beach is in its best state. 22
- Yellow. Moderate arrival. Swimming is fine, with algae possible along the waterline. 22
- Orange. Abundant arrival, with visible strips of algae on the sand and in the water. 22
- Red. Excessive arrival covering the shore and the water near it. Pick another beach that day. 22
Where to sleep, priced by tier
Three real properties at three price points, read on 25 September 2026.
A bed here runs from $11 a night to an all-inclusive suite averaging $1,250. Sayab Hostel sits on Calle 6 Norte, two blocks from the old center of town, and the two all-inclusive resorts below price a different sort of trip along the same coast. Rates at the top two tiers move with your dates, so read them as anchors for a budget. 24, 25, 26
| Tier | Property | Price (USD) | What the price is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Sayab Hostel, Calle 6 Norte between Av. 15 and Av. 20 | 11.00 to 12.50 a bed | Eight-bed and six-bed dorms; a quadruple private room with bathroom is 48.00, all before the environmental tax |
| Mid-range | Riu Palace Riviera Maya, all-inclusive | from 238 a night | A starting rate on a booking aggregator; the property adds 32.57 pesos per room per night in environmental sanitation tax at the desk |
| Luxury | Grand Velas Riviera Maya, all-inclusive | 1,250 average, from 720 | An aggregator's stated average nightly price, with its lowest observed deal |
The hostel figures come from its own booking site. The Riu Palace and Grand Velas figures come from booking aggregators, because both properties' own reservation pages blocked the request or published no static nightly rate. Treat the top two as illustrative and price your own dates. 24, 25, 26
Area matters more than tier for how the trip feels. South of Constituyentes puts the ferry, the plaza and the busiest stretch of the avenue at the door. North of it, the street quiets down and the walk to the pier gets longer. If the bill is set in pesos and earned in dollars, MMT's exchange-rate worksheet tests what a 10 percent move does to it. 1
Three nights, and where each one goes
What three nights buys without a rental car, and what to drop if you have one or two.
Three nights covers the avenue, the island and a cenote morning without a rental car. The bus brings you in, the ferry handles the island, and the cenote park is 20 to 25 minutes south on Highway 307. 15, 2, 7
- 01Playa del Carmen, south of Constituyentes2 nights
Quinta Avenida, Parque Fundadores and the beach at the end of it, with El Fogón on Avenida Constituyentes from 1 p.m. and the cheaper streets a block back from the promenade. 1, 8
→ ADO from Cancún, from 124 pesos, about 1 hour 20 minutes to the Terminal Turística. 15 - 02
- 03
With less time: With one night, keep the cenote morning and El Fogón at 1 p.m., and leave Cozumel for a trip with a dive day in it. With five, add Tulum: ADO quoted 90 to 136 pesos for the run south on 25 September 2026. 17, 7, 8
Book the ferry tier and the cenote package before you go. Both boards change, and the resident and advance-booking lines on them are the ones that move a day's cost most. 2, 7
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay VISITAX and the FMM separately for Playa del Carmen?
Yes. They are two charges from two governments. VISITAX is Quintana Roo's state tax on foreign tourists, paid only at visitax.gob.mx and reported at 283 pesos, about $16.41. The FMM is Mexico's federal entry permit for stays up to 180 days, reported at 983 pesos, about $57.00, and usually already on an air ticket. Together they come to 1,266 pesos a person. 4, 5, 6, 3
Which Cozumel ferry tier should I buy?
Ultraplan, at 80 pesos one way, if the seat is all you want. The board also carries INAPAM at 100, a Quintana Roo resident fare at 190, Premium Plus at 320 and First Class at 380, so the same crossing spans 4.75 times in price. Two adults on a round trip keep 1,200 pesos by taking Ultraplan over First Class. 2, 3
How early should I get to the Playa del Carmen ferry terminal?
Thirty minutes before departure, which is what Ultramar asks for. The terminal, Terminal Marítima NAVEGA, is on Av. Benito Juárez at the foot of Quinta Avenida. Tickets are sold without refunds but stay valid for six months from purchase on any available sailing, so an early arrival costs you little if plans move. 2
Are the cenotes near Playa del Carmen run by Maya communities?
The two nearest named parks, Kantún-Chí and Chikín-Já, are private operations, and neither is documented as an ejido or a community cooperative. Further into the peninsula, community-run cenotes are common, and the fee stays with the ejido that manages the site. Ask at the ticket window who collects the money, because the answer changes from cenote to cenote. 7, 21
How much is a cenote day from Playa del Carmen?
At Kantún-Chí, 775 pesos on the regular rate for four self-guided cenotes, about $44.94, falling to 699 for a foreign visitor who books ahead and 425 for a Quintana Roo resident. The guided cave package is 1,785. Chikín-Já, on the same stretch of Highway 307, publishes no admission price on its own site, so ask before you travel. 7, 21, 3
Is El Fogón worth walking off Fifth Avenue for?
For tacos al pastor, yes, and the walk is short: Avenida Constituyentes, a few blocks back from the promenade, open 1 p.m. to midnight daily. A local news account of the Michelin Guide's 2024 Quintana Roo round has it on the recommended list. Check the address the day you go, because a second El Fogón on Avenida 30 appears in other listings. 8, 9
Will sargassum spoil the beach?
Some weeks of the year, on some stretches. Playa del Carmen collected 42,942 tonnes in 2026 to 18 September, the highest total of any city in the state, and it has 5 kilometers of barrier in the water. Arrivals land unevenly and shift within a day, so read the state's four-color signal the morning you plan a beach day and move along the coast if it reads red. 10, 22
Is Playa del Carmen worth it, or should I base in Tulum or Cancún?
Yes, if one walkable corner is what you want. Quinta Avenida ends at Parque Fundadores, where the beach, the Cozumel ferry terminal and the main street all meet, and neither Tulum nor Cancún puts those three that close together. The Cozumel crossing starts at 80 pesos on Ultraplan, Kantún-Chí's cenotes are 20 to 25 minutes south, and Tulum is a 90-to-136-peso ADO ride away if you want a second base instead. The trade-off is honest: Playa del Carmen led the state for sargassum in 2026, so check the season and the four-color signal before you pick this base over the others. 1, 2, 7, 17, 10
Is the Tren Maya better than the bus from Cancún?
It is faster on paper, 46 to 52 minutes against about 1 hour 20 minutes, and it costs more: 197 pesos in international class against an ADO fare from 124. The station also sits outside town, which adds a 55-peso Conecta shuttle at each end. For a first arrival with luggage, the bus that leaves from inside the airport terminal usually wins. 16, 15
Should I budget in pesos or dollars?
Pesos. The ferry, the train, the cenote gate and the taquería all set prices in pesos, and cash in small notes moves fastest. Every dollar figure on this page is a conversion at the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate of 17.2454 pesos per dollar on 18 September 2026, so check the rate on your own dates before you plan around it. 3
