Where to eat in Playa del Carmen beyond Fifth Avenue

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.
Quinta Avenida, Playa del Carmen. The tourist strip runs about 22 blocks, and the prices in this guide start a few blocks west of it. 1 · Dennis Sylvester Hurd · Source · CC BY 2.0

Seven named kitchens and two public markets a short walk west of Quinta Avenida, priced in pesos on 25 September 2026.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Street tacos run 15 to 35 pesos each at the counters in this guide: 15 at Taquerías el Nero, 20 at Tacos Gómez and El Oasis, 25 to 35 for seafood at Los Aguachiles. Three at 15 pesos is 45 pesos, about USD 2.61 at the reference rate of 18 September 2026. 2, 3, 4
  • One ceviche tostada costs 35 pesos at the Mercado Municipal and 280 pesos at a beach club in Playacar, eight times the price for the same plate. 5
  • A day of eating off the strip lands near 140 pesos, about USD 8.12: a 35-peso market tostada, three 15-peso tacos and a 60-peso roast-chicken package with a drink. 5, 2, 3, 4
  • El Fogón holds the Michelin Guide's 'recommended' listing from 2024, a tier below a Bib Gourmand and below a star, and it opens daily at 1 p.m. 6, 7
  • Budget 100 to 200 pesos a person for a sit-down cocina económica such as Marisol on Calle 1 Sur, where huevos motuleños and barbacoa de res land in that band. 8

Start one block west of Quinta Avenida

Quinta Avenida runs about 22 blocks of restaurants, shops and entertainment parallel to the beach, which Quintana Roo's state tourism board calls the soul of the city. 1, 9 Walk two blocks west and the price drops. At Taquerías el Nero on Benito Juárez the menu is tacos and nothing else - pastor, chorizo, steak, tongue, tripe - at 15 pesos each. 2

The walk is short and the gap in price is wide. The same ceviche tostada costs 35 pesos at the Mercado Municipal, 120 pesos at a palapa on Avenida Constituyentes and 280 pesos at a beach club in Playacar. 5 Eight times the money, one plate. This page prices seven named kitchens off the avenue and the city's two public markets, every figure read on 25 September 2026.

The hours run late. Taquerías el Nero serves from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., Tacos Gómez from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., El Fogón from 1 p.m. to midnight. 2, 7 So eat late, eat standing, and keep the avenue for the walk afterwards. For beaches, cenotes and the Cozumel ferry, MMT's Playa del Carmen guide covers the rest of the city.

Where do locals eat in Playa del Carmen?

Seven kitchens off the strip, each one named with a price by at least one local round-up or by Google review data, with what that price buys and the hours each one keeps.

Three of El Nero's tacos come to 45 pesos, about USD 2.61 at the Federal Reserve rate of 18 September 2026. 2, 4 A review aggregator puts a whole meal there at 100 to 200 pesos a person, which is the same counter with drinks and a bigger appetite. 10

Three-taco totals are arithmetic on the per-taco price in the same row; the three rows priced per person rather than per taco read n/a there. Every price here comes from a round-up blog or a review aggregator; no kitchen in this table publishes its own menu online, though one round-up calls Tacos Gómez a very local place. 2 Los Aguachiles keeps two branches and Asadero El Pollo a second, smaller one on Av. 30 at Av. CTM. 2, 3

El Fogón is the name that draws the line between the two halves of town. The taquería sits on Avenida Constituyentes, opens daily from 1 p.m. to midnight, and cuts its al pastor from a vertical trompo; queso fundido and bistec campechano fill the board. 7 At a 2024 ceremony the Michelin Guide gave three Quintana Roo restaurants a star, four a Bib Gourmand, and thirteen more a 'recommended' listing. El Fogón is in that third group. 6

Seafood has its own map, and it runs along the highway. El Oasis works the Highway 307 access road at Calle 22 for 20 pesos a taco; one local guide calls it the grandfather of seafood tacos in Playa del Carmen and puts the best hour at midday. 3 Los Aguachiles charges 25 to 35 pesos for shrimp, tuna and avocado, from branches on Calle 34 at Avenida 25 and on Constituyentes. 2

For a plate and a chair, the phrase to look for is cocina económica. Marisol, at Calle 1 Sur 220, cooks a menu that changes by the day, and Google reviewers put the bill at 100 to 200 pesos a person. 8 One reviewer's line in Spanish carries it: comida casera abundante, sabroso y a buen precio. Abundant home cooking, tasty, at a good price.

What do cheap eats in Playa del Carmen cost?

Four bands cover almost every meal in town. A food-cost guide updated on 24 September 2026 puts three street tacos at 60 to 120 pesos, a comida corrida at 100 to 150, a mid-range dinner with a drink at 300 to 600, and fine dining at 900 to 1,800 pesos a person. 5 The counters above sit under the bottom band: three tacos at 15 pesos each is 45. 2

A full day of eating off the strip lands near 140 pesos, about USD 8.12. Breakfast is a tostada at the market, lunch is three tacos at the counter, dinner is a roast chicken you build into tacos yourself. Put that day beside one tostada at a beach club and the day wins. A whole day of eating comes to 140 pesos; the beach-club tostada alone is 280. 5 The pattern repeats along this coast: the food follows the address, and so does the bill. MMT priced the same effect up the highway in Cancún on a budget.

The same tostada, three prices

One dish carries the whole argument of this page. A ceviche tostada is 35 pesos at the Mercado Municipal, 120 pesos at a palapa restaurant on Avenida Constituyentes and 280 pesos at a beachfront club in Playacar, according to a food-cost guide updated on 24 September 2026. 5 At 17.2454 pesos to the dollar on 18 September 2026, that is USD 2.03, USD 6.96 and USD 16.24. 4

The middle price is the useful one. A palapa on Constituyentes at 120 pesos comes with a table, a roof and a menu in two languages, and still costs under half the beach club. 5 Spend the beach money once, on the day you want the sand and the service, and eat the other thirteen days at the counters.

Which market should I walk to?

Playa del Carmen has two public markets, and they pull in different directions. The Mercado Municipal sits on Avenida 30 between Calle 74 and Calle 76, a run of individual stalls selling handicrafts and everyday goods to residents and visitors alike. 11 The newer Mercado de playa Nuestra Señora del Carmen, at Avenida 10 and Calle 10, leans the other way: restaurants, a bar, an ice-cream shop, a florist and a fruit-and-vegetable stall on its upper floor. 11

  • Go to the Mercado Municipal for the price. It is the address behind the 35-peso ceviche tostada, the cheapest of the three in this guide. 5, 11
  • Go to the Avenida 10 market for a table. Its upper floor is built around restaurants and a bar, so it suits a sit-down lunch more than a shopping run. 11
  • Check the opening hours on the day. Neither market posts hours online, and no stall publishes prices.

The markets belong to the city, and the city decides who trades in them. Playa del Carmen's municipal government runs its public markets through the Secretaría de Desarrollo Económico y de Atracción de Inversiones and its Dirección de Mercados, which handles vendor concessions, transfers and oversight of stallholders. 12 The fee a stall pays goes to the municipality, so eating at the market keeps the money close to home.

Yucatecan, Sinaloan, and what the peninsula speaks

Marisol's board is a short course in peninsula home cooking, and Asadero El Pollo's is a different one entirely. Marisol, at Calle 1 Sur 220, changes its menu by the day and arrives with tortillas; four dishes turn up most often. 8 Asadero El Pollo cooks in the style of Sinaloa, on the Pacific side of the country, so its roast chicken belongs to a different regional kitchen. 3

  • Caldo de res con verduras
  • Huevos motuleños
  • Mondongo
  • Barbacoa de res

The peninsula is a Maya-speaking region today. Mexico's 2020 census counted 774,755 speakers of Maayat'aan, the Yucatec Maya language, across the peninsula, including Solidaridad, the municipality that holds Playa del Carmen. 13 That is a living language with a federal institute behind it, spoken on the same blocks these kitchens stand on. For regional cooking across the rest of the country, MMT's Mexico travel guide takes it region by region.

A first day of eating, in order

One day, four stops, built around the hours these kitchens keep. El Fogón sits a few blocks off Quinta Avenida, El Oasis is out on the Highway 307 access road, and Tacos Gómez is off the main boulevard on Calle Paseo del Pedregal. 7, 3, 2

  1. Midday, seafood on the 307

El Oasis charges 20 pesos a taco on the Highway 307 access road at Calle 22, and a local guide puts the best hour at midday. 3

  2. Afternoon, walk the market

The Mercado Municipal is on Avenida 30 between Calle 74 and Calle 76. A ceviche tostada there runs 35 pesos. 11, 5

  3. Early evening, build your own tacos

Asadero El Pollo, at Calle 2 and Avenida 20, sells a one-person package of roast chicken with tortillas, pickled onions, rice and salsas plus a drink for 60 pesos, and closes at 6 p.m. 3

  4. Late, the trompo

El Fogón runs to midnight on Avenida Constituyentes and Taquerías el Nero to 1 a.m. on Benito Juárez. Tacos Gómez goes on until 2 a.m. out on Calle Paseo del Pedregal. 7, 2

Add the sit-down meal on day two. Marisol on Calle 1 Sur is the one place in this guide built for lingering, at 100 to 200 pesos a person. 8 Travelling on to Tulum or Valladolid afterwards? MMT compares the ways to get there in Tren Maya vs ADO bus.

Where these prices come from

Every peso on this page comes from someone other than the kitchen charging it. No named taquería, cocina económica or public market in Playa del Carmen publishes its own prices online, checked on 25 September 2026.

So the numbers come from two independent round-up blogs, a review aggregator reading Google review data, one dated food-tour operator's price guide, and the city government's own markets page. 2, 3, 10, 8, 5, 12

  • Two sources where two exist. The per-taco prices at El Nero, Gómez, El Oasis and Los Aguachiles come from two blogs checked against each other, and the per-person ranges come from a separate aggregator. 2, 3, 10
  • Government where it counts. Who runs the markets comes from the municipality itself; the street address comes from a travel blog, because the government page names the department and skips the address. 12, 11
  • One exchange rate, one date. All dollar figures use 17.2454 pesos per US dollar, the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate of 18 September 2026. 4
  • Gaps stay visible. Mercado 30, a newer food market on Avenida 30, kept coming up in searches, and no page for it could be opened, so it stays off the map above.

Read the board before you order. These are small kitchens with handwritten prices that move with the cost of beef and shrimp. Use the figures here to know what a fair price looks like two blocks off the avenue, then pay what the board says. Diving on the same trip? The Cozumel diving budget prices the boats and the park fees.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget for a week of eating in Playa del Carmen?

About 980 pesos, or USD 56.83, for seven days at the same day-to-day pace: a market tostada, three tacos and a roast-chicken package, all off the strip, at the 18 September 2026 reference rate. 5, 2, 3, 4 Swap in a sit-down cocina económica some nights and add 100 to 200 pesos a person, or a mid-range dinner with a drink at 300 to 600. 8, 5

Is Quinta Avenida worth eating on at all?

For a walk and a drink, yes. For value, the arithmetic goes the other way: the same ceviche tostada is 35 pesos at the Mercado Municipal and 280 pesos at a Playacar beach club. 5 The avenue is what the state tourism board calls the soul of the city, and it is priced to match. 9 Eat two blocks west, then walk it.

Does El Fogón have a Michelin star?

El Fogón carries the Michelin Guide's lightest recognition, a 'recommended' listing from a 2024 ceremony. That year three Quintana Roo restaurants took stars and four took a Bib Gourmand; thirteen more, El Fogón among them, took the recommended listing. 6 It opens daily from 1 p.m. to midnight on Avenida Constituyentes. 7

What time do the taco counters open?

Not every one of them says. Los Aguachiles and Marisol post no hours online, and El Oasis is described only by its best hour, midday, rather than a schedule. 3 For the daytime, that leaves Asadero El Pollo, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and El Oasis around midday; everything else on this page runs into the evening or past midnight. 3, 2, 7

What is a cocina económica?

A small sit-down kitchen serving home cooking at a set daily price, the everyday Mexican alternative to a restaurant. Cocina Económica Marisol at Calle 1 Sur 220 is the named example in this guide, with a menu that changes by the day at 100 to 200 pesos a person. 8

Where is the cheapest ceviche in Playa del Carmen?

The Mercado Municipal, on Avenida 30 between Calle 74 and Calle 76, where a ceviche tostada is quoted at 35 pesos, about USD 2.03. 5, 11, 4 The city runs its public markets through its economic development department, which handles the stall concessions. 12

How much is a taco in US dollars?

A 15-peso taco at Taquerías el Nero is about USD 0.87, and a 35-peso seafood taco at Los Aguachiles about USD 2.03, at 17.2454 pesos per dollar on 18 September 2026. 2, 4 Rates move, so treat the dollar column as a guide and the peso price as the real one.
