El Fogón, Playa del Carmen: which branch and when to go

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.

Four addresses carry the El Fogón name, the trompo at one of them turns until 3 a.m., and nobody publishes a price - so bring pesos and pick your branch by your bedtime.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Four addresses in Playa del Carmen carry the El Fogón name, and two of them share the phone number 984 803 0885. The Centro branch on 30 Avenida Norte keeps the longest day of the four: 14 hours, 1 p.m. to 3 a.m. 1, 2
  • Bring pesos. One review site tags the Constituyentes branch "credit cards accepted", but that tag comes from the site, and a local blog says only that El Fogón is "flexible for payments". Cash settles it. 3, 4
  • The Michelin Guide listed El Fogón as recommended in its 2024 Quintana Roo round, one of 13 recommended restaurants beside three starred and four with Bib Gourmand. Recommended is the lightest of those three marks. 5
  • Between late December and the end of May, walk over around 6 p.m. A host works the door, and the line thickens through dinner in high season. 6, 4
  • Google's listing runs 4.6 from 12,649 reviews, and no menu price is published anywhere. Carry round numbers of pesos: 200 pesos is about USD 11.60 at the 18 September 2026 reference rate. 2, 7

The line at the corner of Avenida 30

A cone of marinated pork turns on a vertical spit, and a host with a list stands at the door. That is El Fogón on the corner of Avenida Constituyentes and Avenida 30, a short walk inland off Quinta Avenida, and the spit is the reason for the list. The kitchen's own trade is tacos al pastor carved off the trompo, with queso fundido and bistec campechano beside them. 8, 9, 4

The crowd is the recommendation. Google's listing for the downtown branch sits at 4.6 from 12,649 reviews, a volume few restaurants in a resort town reach, and El Fogón got there while doing almost no advertising and keeping barely any social media presence. A local blog treats that as deliberate. 2, 4

So the useful questions are logistical. Which of the four addresses do you walk to. How late does the trompo turn. What do you put in your pocket before you leave the room. This page answers those from published listings, and says plainly where the listings disagree.

Which El Fogón branch should you pick?

Four addresses carry the name. Two share a phone number. Three of them sit in walking distance of each other downtown.

El Fogón is a small local chain, and that explains the map pins that seem to fight. A Playa del Carmen tourism blog lists four branded locations: Constituyentes, Centro on 30 Avenida Norte, a second 30 Avenida address at number 354, and one on Quinta Avenida itself. Each keeps its own hours. Two answer the same phone. 1

Two branches answer 984 803 0885, the same number a local directory entry gives for the Constituyentes corner. 1, 9 Google's own listing places El Fogón at the Centro address. 2 No page from the restaurant confirms the list, so treat it as a snapshot of what local listings said, read on 25 September 2026.

The Centro branch runs eight hours longer than the 30 Avenida 354 branch, which opens only at 6 p.m. If you are eating late, Centro is the address to aim for. Other listings give the Constituyentes corner a later closing time than this one does; the table below sets them side by side. Source: 1

Pick by your bedtime and your feet. From the beach end of Quinta Avenida, the Quinta Avenida branch is the shortest walk and the earliest to close, at 22:30. The Constituyentes corner is the one most reviews describe, a few blocks inland. Centro is the one that is still serving when the bars empty. 1

When does El Fogón open and close?

Plan on roughly 1 p.m. until the early hours, and confirm the closing time at the door. Five listings describe the Constituyentes corner, three of them giving the same phone number, and they still disagree about when it closes: midnight, 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. all appear. Google's listing tracks the Centro branch instead, at 3 a.m. No page from the restaurant settles any of it. 1, 3, 9, 4, 6, 2

The opening hour is steady at noon or 1 p.m. The closing hour is the live disagreement: midnight in two listings, 3 a.m. in three, 4 a.m. in one, for addresses that share a phone number. Kitchen hours also move with the season and the crowd.

What are El Fogón's menu prices?

El Fogón publishes no price list, so this page prints none. The restaurant has no reachable website and no working social page, and the one local blog that posts its carta posts it as an image rather than readable text. Everything circulating online, from a per-taco estimate to a per-person band, comes from a blog or a review site. 4, 6, 3

What you can do is arrive with the right cash. On 18 September 2026 the Federal Reserve's reference rate put the peso at 17.2454 to the US dollar, so the round numbers of pesos you will hand over convert as below. Taquería tabs in Playa del Carmen are settled in pesos, and the table is there to tell you what a note is worth as you pull it out. 7

Converted at 17.2454 pesos per dollar and rounded to the cent. A card or an ATM adds its own spread on top of this rate. The table converts banknotes, not a bill: El Fogón publishes no prices, and the figures floating around review sites range from about a dollar and a half for one taco to several hundred pesos a head.

What are tacos al pastor, and where do they come from?

The signature taco of the Riviera Maya's taquerías was born from Lebanese cooking in Puebla. Lebanese families brought spit-roasted lamb to Mexico in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. By the 1920s pork had largely taken the lamb's place. Their Mexican-born children marinated it in adobo and served it on corn tortillas, and the style spread through the 1960s. 10

That history is worth carrying to the counter, because it explains the machine. The trompo is a shawarma spit with a Puebla accent: stacked marinated pork, an open flame at the back, a cook shaving slices off the outside into a tortilla held in one hand. Al pastor is Mexican food from central Mexico, served on a Caribbean coast a thousand kilometres away. 10, 8

What to order at a taquería built on the trompo

Order the al pastor first, and order it by the piece. The dishes below are the ones El Fogón is described as known for, so they are the safe first pass at a menu the restaurant keeps offline. 8

  • Tacos al pastor, carved off the vertical spit. This is the reason the corner has a line, and the dish every listing names first. 8, 4
  • Queso fundido, melted cheese for the table, ordered alongside the tacos rather than instead of them. 8
  • Bistec campechano, the mixed-meat taco that turns an order into a meal. 8
  • Aguas frescas if you are eating early, and the large margaritas if you are eating late. A property company's restaurant page lists both. 8

Is El Fogón the best taquería in Playa del Carmen?

It is the most reviewed, by a distance, and it carries a Michelin mark. Google's listing for the Centro branch shows 4.6 from 12,649 reviews. Read that as volume: 12,649 people in a resort town bothered to leave a review. On volume, El Fogón is the town's taquería of record. 2

The Michelin line needs precision. At a 2024 ceremony the Michelin Guide recognised 20 Quintana Roo restaurants: three with stars, including HA' and Cocina de Autor in Playa del Carmen, four with Bib Gourmand, and 13 as recommended. El Fogón is in that last group of 13. Recommended means the inspectors put it on the list, and that is all it means. 5

Best is your call, and the overflow gives you a second option. A local blog names Don Sirloin, at 25th Avenue and Constituyentes, as where the line goes when El Fogón's door is full. Two taquerías a block apart is a good problem. For the rest of the town's eating, start with MMT's Playa del Carmen guide. 4

How to build the evening around it

Five decisions, in the order they come up. None of them needs a booking, because El Fogón takes none.

  1. Pick the branch by your bedtime

Eating at 7 p.m., any of the four works. Eating at 1 a.m., go to Centro on 30 Avenida Norte, the one listed to 3 a.m. and the one Google's listing tracks. 1, 2

  2. Draw pesos before you walk over

Cards are unconfirmed here, so cash is the plan. Pull enough for the table and a tip; 200 pesos is about USD 11.60 at the 18 September 2026 reference rate. 3, 7

  3. In high season, leave at 6 p.m.

Late December to the end of May is when the line runs longest at dinner, and 6 p.m. is the hour one local blog recommends for getting in quickly. 6

  4. Give your name to the host at the door

A host manages the queue most evenings. If the wait is long, Don Sirloin at 25th and Constituyentes is the block's fallback. 4

  5. Order al pastor, then decide about the margaritas

Start with the trompo tacos, add queso fundido for the table, and keep the rest of the night loose. The Playa del Carmen guide has the bars, the beach clubs and the ferry times. 8

The city the taquería sits in

El Fogón's branches sit a short walk off the street the state calls the heart of the city. Quintana Roo's tourism promotion council describes Quinta Avenida, running parallel to the beach, as the soul of Playa del Carmen, lined with restaurants, shops and entertainment that pull in residents and visitors alike. Step two or three blocks inland and the prices change. 11, 8

This is the Riviera Maya, and the name points at people who live here now. Mexico's 2020 census counted 774,755 speakers of Maayat'aan, Yucatec Maya, in the country, a language spoken today across Campeche and Quintana Roo, including Solidaridad, the municipality that contains Playa del Carmen. Yucatec Maya is spoken in the municipality you are eating in, today, by people who live here. Al pastor, though, travelled here from Puebla. 12, 10

Two practical neighbours to this page. Quintana Roo charges visitors a state tourist tax, and MMT's VISITAX guide covers the price and how to pay it. If the ferry to Cozumel is next on your list, the Cozumel diving budget prices the boats, and Cancún on a budget does the same for the airport end of the coast.

Frequently asked questions

Does El Fogón take credit cards?

Assume cash. The only claims either way come from a review site's amenity tag and a blog's phrase, not from the restaurant, so carry pesos and ask at the counter before you order. 3, 4

How late is El Fogón open?

Late, with a caveat. Listings agree it opens at noon or 1 p.m. and then split on closing: midnight in two, 3 a.m. in three, 4 a.m. in one, for branches that share a phone number. The Centro branch on 30 Avenida Norte is the one most often listed to 3 a.m. Confirm at the door. 1, 3, 9, 2

Does El Fogón have a Michelin star?

No. At a 2024 ceremony the Michelin Guide gave stars to three Quintana Roo restaurants and Bib Gourmand to four, and listed 13 more as recommended. El Fogón is one of the 13 recommended. That is a real mention in the guide, and a lighter one than a star. 5

Do you need a reservation at El Fogón?

There are no bookings. A review site's listing records "no booking" for the Constituyentes branch, and a host works the line at the door instead. 3, 4

Is there parking at El Fogón?

A Playa del Carmen blog reports parking at almost all of El Fogón's locations, and a review site lists parking among the Constituyentes branch's features. Neither says whether it is free. Downtown Playa del Carmen is walkable from most hotels, and on a busy evening the walk is usually faster than the search for a space. 6, 3

Will anyone at El Fogón speak English?

Most likely, yes. A local blog describes the staff as used to guests who speak little or no Spanish. Ordering here is simple in any language: say al pastor, say how many, and point at the trompo. Counting your tacos in Spanish is a good use of the wait at the door. 4

Is El Fogón the same place as El Fogón del May?

No. El Fogón del May is a separately branded, delivery-focused grill with its own phone number, its own review-site listing and a Cancún location, and no source ties it to the al pastor taquería this page covers. Check the phone number and the address against the table above before you follow a map pin. 1

Does El Fogón have a website or an Instagram?

None that works. Two Facebook pages found by search both returned errors on 25 September 2026, no Instagram account surfaced, and a local blog states the taquería barely advertises or posts. A shop domain matching the name now hosts an unrelated gambling site, so ignore it. Everything here comes from third-party listings. 4
