The other Cancún, across the lagoon
The mainland half of the city runs on peso prices, and almost everything on this page sits within a few blocks of one street.
Avenida Tulum carries the R-1 bus every 10 to 15 minutes, out of the Hotel Zone, past the ADO terminal, on toward El Crucero. Taco counters open onto the sidewalk. Two markets trade a few blocks west. A public park fills with music after dark. This is downtown Cancún, and its prices are printed in pesos. 9
The strip of resorts across the Nichupté Lagoon gets the postcards. It also sets the bill. Cross to the mainland and a plate of food costs what the person beside you pays, which is the whole reason a budget week in Cancún works at all.
Every figure below was read on 25 September 2026: from two restaurants' own menus, the municipal cultural institute, the bus operator's own route map, and the officials who answer for beach access. Where a price is posted, it is here with its source. Where nobody publishes one, this page says so and moves on.
How much does a taco cost in downtown Cancún?
Two named taquerías with real figures, one on its own menu and one from a diner who paid, plus the cochinita place that posts hours and no prices.
Los de Pescado charges 62 pesos for a fish taco, about $3.60, and prints the whole menu on its own site. It started from a wooden cart in Cancún in 2004 and now runs nine branches, one of them on Avenida Tulum downtown. Shrimp costs the same as fish. A marlin pescadilla is the cheapest thing on the board. 2, 3
| Item | MXN | USD at 17.2454 |
|---|---|---|
| Fish taco | 62 | 3.60 |
| Shrimp taco | 62 | 3.60 |
| Marlin pescadilla | 46 | 2.67 |
| Mixed pescadilla | 46 | 2.67 |
| Ceviche tostada | 72 | 4.18 |
| Fish burrito | 86 | 4.99 |
| Shrimp burrito | 105 | 6.09 |
| Agua de horchata, jamaica or tamarindo | 40 | 2.32 |
| Soda | 48 | 2.78 |
| Beer | 54 | 3.13 |
Dollars convert at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate for 18 September 2026. The site lists the downtown branch by street, Avenida Tulum, with no street number; the other Cancún branches are Cumbres, Go Outlet, Avenida Labna, Malecón Américas, Express and Avenida 135. 2, 3
Ten tacos for 200 pesos is the other way to eat on the same avenue. A travel writer paid that at Taquería El Poblano for five al pastor and five chorizo, served build-your-own with the tortillas, meat, onion, cilantro and pineapple in separate dishes. That works out at 20 pesos a taco, about $1.16, and it is one diner's receipt on an undated page, not a posted menu. 11, 3
Table view: What one downtown meal costs
| Item | Value (MXN) |
|---|---|
| Ten tacos to share, Taquería El Poblano | 200 MXN |
| Market lunch plate, Mercado 28, top of the range | 180 MXN |
| Two fish tacos and an agua, Los de Pescado | 164 MXN |
| Market lunch plate, Mercado 28, after bargaining | 120 MXN |
| One fish taco, Los de Pescado | 62 MXN |
| One marlin pescadilla, Los de Pescado | 46 MXN |
The two market figures are the same plate asked at two ends of a bargain. The pescadilla and an agua together come to 86 pesos, the cheapest full sit-down meal on this page. Tips sit outside every figure. Source: 2, 11, 4

One more name worth walking to. El Tatich cooks cochinita pibil and lechón al horno from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., or until the day's pork runs out, at Chilam Balam and Avenida Tecnológico beside the Walmart at Gran Plaza. The site publishes hours and an address and no prices at all, so budget it from the ranges above and ask at the counter. 12
Mercado 28 or Mercado 23: where do locals eat?
Two markets a few blocks apart, one built for visitors and one for the neighborhood, with different rules about price.
Mercado 28 opens daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and expects you to bargain. It is the craft-and-food market visitors are sent to: T-shirts from 100 pesos, embroidered blouses from 250, vanilla from 150, and a lunch plate in the restaurant row at 120 to 180 pesos once the haggling settles. Busiest from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the restaurant row from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. 4
| Market | What it is | Hours | What a meal costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercado 28 | Craft and food market aimed at visitors, a few blocks from Mercado 23 | 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily | Lunch plate MXN 120 to 180 after bargaining, about $6.96 to $10.44 |
| Mercado 23 | The older public market, produce, meat, spices and a food-stall row | Hours not published by any source found | Fixed local prices, lower than Mercado 28; no per-dish figure published |
The Mercado 28 range is a Cancún resident's own figures after bargaining, published 17 July 2026, and the first asking price runs roughly double it. Two independent write-ups of Mercado 23 agree its prices are lower and fixed, and neither prints a peso number for a dish, so none appears here. Dollars at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, Federal Reserve H.10, 18 September 2026. 4, 13, 3
Mercado 23 sits a few blocks away near Avenida Yaxchilán, and it is where the neighborhood shops. Produce, meat and spices at set local prices. A row of food stalls doing lechón tostado, panuchos, salbutes, tacos de cochito, and fish tacos and ceviche off the morning's catch. The local rule of thumb, from a hotel's own guide to the pair: watch where the police, the taxi drivers and the office workers are eating. 13
Those dishes are Yucatec Maya food, cooked and eaten here now, and the cochinita pibil across town at El Tatich comes out of the same kitchen tradition. 13, 12

Which beaches in Cancún are free?
Five named public access points on Boulevard Kukulcán, with the paperwork gap behind them stated plainly.
Playa Delfines, Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, Playa Las Perlas and Playa Marlín are open, free and delimited as public access. The municipal secretary of Ecology and Urban Development said so on the record on 23 October 2025, after the environmental group DMAS warned that Cancún's new urban development program could rezone four of them to tourist-services use. 5
| Beach | Km on Blvd. Kukulcán | Parking | What is there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playa Las Perlas | 2.5 | Not listed | About 3 km from downtown; free playground |
| Playa Langosta | 5 | Free | Beside Plaza La Isla; showers; lifeguards paid by the city |
| Playa Tortugas | 6.5 | Free | The one public beach where permitted operators run jet skis, banana boats and a bungee |
| Playa Marlín | 13 | Not listed | Direct boulevard access across from Plaza Kukulcán |
| Playa Delfines | 17.5 to 18 | Free, 300-plus cars | Municipal restrooms, the lookout, no hotel behind the sand |
Kilometer markers, parking and amenities come from an independent Cancún beach-guide site labeled 2026, not a government page. Where that guide lists no parking for a beach, this table says so. Playa Delfines appears at Km 17.5 on that guide and Km 18 in the city-focused source; both describe the same beach and lookout. 10, 1
Delfines is the one to aim for from downtown. Wide sand, no resort standing behind it, free parking beside the lookout, and municipal restrooms on site. The rest of the Hotel Zone's beaches sit behind a hotel, which is what makes five named public entrances worth writing down. 1, 10
The wider rule is federal. Under Article 27 of Mexico's constitution every beach is national property with free public access, and the beach guide lists PROFEPA's number, 800-776-3372, for a hotel that blocks the way to the water. 10
What does a Cancún bus cost, and which one goes where?
Three fares are on the record, and they belong to different buses in the middle of a system changeover.
Ask which bus you are boarding before you ask what it costs. The legacy R-1 and R-2 city routes and the state's new MOBI corridor run side by side in Cancún right now, with separate fares, separate payment and separate operators. Three dated figures are on the record, and they sit between 9.50 and 15 pesos. 6, 7, 8
| Fare on the record | MXN | USD at 17.2454 | Which bus | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Municipal authorized rate, urban zone | 9.50 | 0.55 | R-1 and R-2 city buses | 23 August 2024 |
| Municipal authorized rate, Hotel Zone | 12 | 0.70 | R-1 and R-2 city buses | 23 August 2024 |
| Charged to riders, press reporting | 12 to 15 | 0.70 to 0.87 | R-1 and R-2 city buses | 25 September 2025 |
| MOBI Ruta 27, general fare | 15 | 0.87 | MOBI Puente Nichupté corridor | 13 September 2026 |
| MOBI Ruta 27, social fare | 10 | 0.58 | Accredited students and seniors | 13 September 2026 |
Quintana Roo's mobility institute put the real per-ride cost at 21 to 24 pesos in September 2025, when a fare and route overhaul was out for consultation with no increase approved. MOBI riders with a disability credential travel free. Turicún, the R-1 and R-2 operator, publishes full route detail and no fare anywhere on its site. Dollars at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, Federal Reserve H.10, 18 September 2026. 6, 7, 8, 9, 3
The MOBI corridor is new build, not a rename of the old routes. Ruta 27 Puente Nichupté runs 64.9 km from Cielo Nuevo in the north of the city to the Hotel Zone across the new Nichupté bridge, through Arco Norte, Avenida Lak'in, José López Portillo, Avenida Nichupté, Avenida Kabah and Boulevard Kukulcán. Sixteen 80-passenger Taruk buses work it from 5:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., every 7 minutes at peak. Free rides ended on 13 September 2026. 8
- Pay MOBI by card or by app. The physical MOBI card costs 35 pesos, about $2.03, sold only at Oxxo, 7-Eleven, Abarrotes Dunosusa and GOmart, and topped up in the same stores or in the app. A contactless bank card works per ride, and one or two trips need no card at all. 15, 3
- Carry small peso notes for the legacy routes. The R-1 and R-2 take cash, with no cards and no dollars. 7
- Take the R-2 for the markets and the R-1 for Avenida Tulum. Turicún's own route list has Ruta 2 running Zona Hotelera to Avenida Kabah and Mercado 28, and Ruta 1 running Zona Hotelera to the ADO terminal, Avenida Tulum and El Crucero, both every 10 to 15 minutes. 9
- Watch the second corridor's start date. MOBI's Kilómetro 0 route was still free on 24 September 2026, with fares starting 28 September 2026. 15
For the intercity half of a Yucatán trip, the choice is a different one: MMT compares the Tren Maya, the ADO bus and a rental car on price and door-to-door time, and the Cancún guide prices the airport runs, the ferries and the state taxes that land before any of this.
An evening at Parque de las Palapas costs nothing to enter
Parque de las Palapas is a public park in the middle of downtown, and walking in is free. It dates from 1974, a central urban park designed by the architect Miguel Valverde, with the original palapas built largely by Isauro Kanxoc. The municipal Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes runs it today, after a renovation under municipal president Ana Paty Peralta that rebuilt the green areas, the street furniture and the play spaces. 16
By day it is a marquesita, an ice cream or a plate of antojitos while children take over the playground. By night the stage works: live music, art performances and community events around the food stalls and craft sellers. What costs money is the food, and each vendor sets their own price. 16
Treat the nearby market range as the reference point. A sit-down lunch plate at Mercado 28 settles at 120 to 180 pesos, and a marlin pescadilla with an agua at Los de Pescado is 86 pesos, about $4.99. A marquesita from a park cart sits below both. 4, 2, 3
A day downtown, priced line by line
One worksheet, every line from a source in this page, so you can swap your own choices into it.
Two bus rides, a market lunch, an afternoon on free sand and a taco dinner: 314 pesos, about $18.21. That is one person, food and transport only, at the fares and prices read on 25 September 2026. Lodging, drinks and any tour sit outside it. 8, 4, 2, 1, 3
| Line | Detail | MXN | USD at 17.2454 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus, two rides | MOBI Ruta 27 general fare, 15 pesos each way | 30 | 1.74 |
| Lunch | Mercado 28 restaurant row, bottom of the bargained range | 120 | 6.96 |
| Beach | Playa Delfines entry and parking | 0 | 0.00 |
| Dinner | Two fish tacos and an agua at Los de Pescado | 164 | 9.51 |
| Day total | One person, food and transport | 314 | 18.21 |
A first MOBI card adds 35 pesos once, about $2.03. Riding the legacy R-1 or R-2 instead moves the transport line to somewhere between 19 and 30 pesos, which is why the fare table above carries three dated figures. Dollars at 17.2454 pesos per dollar, Federal Reserve H.10, 18 September 2026. 15, 6, 7, 3
Ride the R-2 or MOBI Ruta 27 toward Mercado 28
Turicún's Ruta 2 runs Zona Hotelera to Avenida Kabah and Mercado 28, every 10 to 15 minutes, and MOBI's Ruta 27 also runs Avenida Kabah, at the flat 15-peso fare this worksheet uses. Get off for the market's archway entrance, and walk past the pink plaza signed Market 28. 9, 4, 8
Eat in the restaurant row before 1 p.m.
The market runs 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the restaurant section fills between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Bargain: the first plate price you hear is roughly double the fair one, and 120 pesos is the settled bottom of the range. 4
Where should you sleep to keep the week cheap?
Downtown is the cheaper base, and the transport half of that is provable. Two bus rides a day for a week is 210 pesos, about $12.18, at the MOBI general fare. One hotel's own downtown guide prices a Hotel Zone taxi to the center at 200 to 300 pesos, which a single trip spends most of the week's bus budget on. 8, 13, 3
The lodging half stays open. On 25 September 2026 this research found no downtown Cancún hostel or budget hotel publishing its own bookable nightly rate, so price your own dates directly with the property; the gap goes in the box below.
- Check the bus before the bed. A cheap room 40 minutes from a bus route is a taxi habit. Turicún's R-1 and R-2 lists tell you which avenues have service every 10 to 15 minutes. 9
- Budget the beach day as transport, not entry. Five public access points charge nothing, so the only cost of a swim is the ride there and what you eat. 5, 10
- Price the rest of the peninsula the same way. MMT's Mexico travel guide sets out the regional routes, and the Cozumel diving budget prices the island down the coast if a dive day is on the list.
Frequently asked questions
How much money do you need a day in Cancún?
On the worksheet in this page, 314 pesos, about $18.21, covers one person's food and transport downtown: two 15-peso bus rides, a 120-peso market lunch, a free afternoon at Playa Delfines and a 164-peso taco dinner. Lodging, drinks and tours sit on top. 8, 4, 2, 1, 3
Can you eat a full meal in Cancún for under 100 pesos?
Yes. A marlin pescadilla at Los de Pescado is 46 pesos and an agua de horchata is 40, which is 86 pesos together, about $4.99, from the chain's own posted menu. A single fish taco is 62 pesos. 2, 3
Is Mercado 28 or Mercado 23 cheaper?
Mercado 23. It is the older public market where the neighborhood shops, with fixed local prices on produce, meat and prepared food. Mercado 28 is aimed at visitors and expects bargaining, with a lunch plate settling at 120 to 180 pesos. No source found in this research prints a per-dish price for Mercado 23, so use the Mercado 28 range as the upper reference. 13, 4
Is Playa Delfines really free?
Yes. Entry and the parking area beside the lookout are free at kilometer 18 of Boulevard Kukulcán, with municipal restrooms and signage on site, and no hotel standing behind the sand. Langosta, Tortugas, Las Perlas and Marlín are also free and open. 1, 5, 10
Can a hotel stop you walking onto a Cancún beach?
Under Article 27 of Mexico's constitution every beach in the country is national property with free public access. A beach guide lists PROFEPA's reporting line, 800-776-3372, for access that gets blocked. On paper, though, only Playa del Niño, Delfines and Coral held formal public-beach designation as of the October 2025 reporting. 10, 14
How do you get from downtown Cancún to the beach by bus?
The R-1 and R-2 city buses run the length of Boulevard Kukulcán from downtown, every 10 to 15 minutes, with the R-2 also serving Avenida Kabah and Mercado 28. The state's new MOBI Ruta 27 crosses the Nichupté bridge from the north of the city to the Hotel Zone from 5:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. 9, 8
Do you need a MOBI card to ride the bus in Cancún?
Only if you want the card fare. The physical MOBI card is 35 pesos, about $2.03, sold at Oxxo, 7-Eleven, Abarrotes Dunosusa and GOmart. Otherwise pay per ride with a contactless bank card or an e-ticket in the MOBI app. The legacy R-1 and R-2 take cash in pesos. 15, 3, 7
Does Parque de las Palapas charge for entry?
No. It is a municipal public park from 1974, run by Cancún's Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes, with live music, performances and community events at night. The food stalls and craft sellers around it set their own prices. 16
