What a bull shark dive here actually is
At 24 metres the seabed is flat pale sand, and the sharks arrive out of the blue. The site sits about 1 kilometre off Playa del Carmen. A research team took a submersible ultrasound down there in 2023 and confirmed embryos in three free swimming female bull sharks across two 20 minute dives, at that depth, on that sand. 9
Pregnant females spend the last stretch of pregnancy in this water, which is what gives the season its shape. The 2023 paper calls the area a possible gestation ground and critical habitat for that stage of a shark's life. Whether those same animals then travel roughly 360 km south to Chetumal Bay to give birth stays an open question. 9
Two formats sell here, and the choice sets both your price and your paperwork. Observation dives put you on the sand with no bait in the water. Feeding dives hold the group in one place while a guide works with bait, which is how Phantom Divers describes its Encounter dive at 80 feet. The same shop runs a no bait Discovery dive as a 45 minute drift. 3
When is bull shark season in Mexico?
The window every operator publishes, the water temperature behind it, and the months that trade sharks for weather.
All four shops on this page sell the same five months: November to March. Xico Dive Center puts hard dates on it, 1 November through 31 March, and says single sharks turn up outside the season while the scheduled trip runs only inside it. Phantom Divers describes November to March. Scuba Adventours dates the coming season 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027. 1, 3, 2
Temperature is the trigger. Pelagios Kakunja, a shark research group working this site, says the sharks stay in these waters from November to March, when the water drops below 26 degrees C, about 79 F. Warm water in April sends them elsewhere. 4
| Operator | Season on its own page | What the page says about the months |
|---|---|---|
| Xico Dive Center | 1 November to 31 March | Scheduled trip runs in season; single sharks are seen outside it |
| Scuba Adventours | 1 Nov 2026 to 31 Mar 2027 | December, January and February hold the highest numbers |
| Phantom Divers | November to March | Warm water and good visibility across the window |
| Koox Diving | November to March | Best sightings early in the morning |
Dates as published on each shop's own page on 25 September 2026. None of the four pages carried a revision date.

Do you need Advanced Open Water for a shark dive?
The answer follows the format more than the shop. Observation dives commonly open at Open Water. Feeding dives commonly ask for Advanced Open Water, or Open Water backed by 20 to 25 logged dives and recent time in the water. Xico Dive Center screens every diver on certification, recent experience, buoyancy and depth comfort. Phantom Divers adds equalization and air-consumption checks for its feeding-format dive. Scuba Adventours and Koox Diving screen only through their stated certification and logged-dive minimums. 3, 1, 2, 6
| Operator and dive | Certification on the page | Experience and screening |
|---|---|---|
| Phantom Divers, Discovery, 2 dives, no bait | Open Water | No logged dive minimum stated |
| Phantom Divers, Encounter, feeding | Advanced, or Open Water with more than 20 logged dives | Check out dive first if you fall short; steady air use and equalization; dark full wetsuit |
| Xico Dive Center, both formats | Open Water | Check dive at 25 logged dives or fewer; suitability screening above that |
| Scuba Adventours, observation plus reef | Advanced Open Water | Open Water accepted with 25 logged dives and a dive in the last 6 months |
| Koox Diving, reef plus deep shark dive | Advanced Open Water or equivalent | Dives to 20 to 25 m, groups of 2 to 4 |
Requirements as published on each shop's own page on 25 September 2026. Phantom Divers also lists good air consumption, easy equalization and a dark wetsuit with no bright colours for its feeding dive.
Holding Open Water and wanting the feeding dive? The course that unlocks it is Advanced Open Water. PADI's own page counts it in dives instead of money: two required dives, deep and underwater navigation, plus three electives you pick, five in total. Book that first and the shark dive stops hanging on a check out dive. 10
- Buoyancy at depth is the real test. Xico Dive Center runs a check dive for anyone with 25 logged dives or fewer, then screens certification, recent diving, buoyancy and comfort at depth for everyone else. 1
- Recency counts as much as the card. Scuba Adventours asks Open Water divers for a dive inside the last six months alongside the 25 logged dives. 2
- A short course can fix a short logbook. Phantom Divers sells an SSI Shark Observer specialty at 6,900 MXN, about $400 at the Federal Reserve rate for 18 September 2026, built around bull shark diving. 3, 5
How much does a bull shark dive in Playa cost?
Four named shops, the prices on their own pages, and the add ons that move the bill.
2,180 MXN is the floor and 4,420 MXN the ceiling on the standard trips. Both numbers belong to Phantom Divers: the two dive observation trip at the bottom, the feeding dive plus a reef dive at the top, a spread of 2,240 MXN on one shop's list. At the Federal Reserve rate of 17.2454 pesos per dollar for 18 September 2026, that runs about $126 to $256. 3, 5
| Operator and format | Dives | Price as published | About, in USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phantom Divers, Bull Shark Discovery, no bait | 2 | 2,180 MXN | $126 |
| Xico Dive Center, Bull Shark Observation | 2 | 3,000 MXN | $174 |
| Scuba Adventours, observation plus reef | 2 | 3,500 MXN ($209 shown) | $203 |
| Phantom Divers, Bull Shark Encounter, feeding | 1 | 3,560 MXN | $206 |
| Xico Dive Center, Bull Shark Feeding Dive | 1 | 4,000 MXN | $232 |
| Koox Diving, reef plus shark dive from Playa | 2 | $249 | $249 |
| Phantom Divers, Encounter plus reef, feeding | 2 | 4,420 MXN | $256 |
| Phantom Divers, SSI Shark Observer course | course | 6,900 MXN | $400 |
Peso prices convert at the Federal Reserve H.10 noon buying rate of 17.2454 pesos per dollar for 18 September 2026. Koox Diving publishes in dollars, so its two columns match. Xico Dive Center prints its own approximations beside the pesos, about $176 and $235, and Scuba Adventours quotes an indicative $1 to 16.97 MXN, so a card statement lands close to these figures without matching them. Equipment rental adds 440 MXN at Phantom Divers; Koox Diving includes gear.
Table view: What one bull shark trip costs in pesos
| Item | Value (MXN) |
|---|---|
| Phantom, Discovery, 2 dives, no bait | 2,180 MXN |
| Xico, Observation, 2 dives | 3,000 MXN |
| Scuba Adventours, observation plus reef, 2 dives | 3,500 MXN |
| Phantom, Encounter, 1 feeding dive | 3,560 MXN |
| Xico, Feeding Dive, 1 dive | 4,000 MXN |
| Phantom, Encounter plus reef, 2 dives | 4,420 MXN |
Feeding raises the price at both shops that sell the two formats side by side: 1,380 MXN more at Phantom Divers, 1,000 MXN more at Xico Dive Center for one dive instead of two. Koox Diving publishes in dollars only, so it sits outside this chart. Equipment rental is extra at Phantom Divers. Source: 3, 1, 2
Where you sleep moves the fare as well. Koox Diving holds its price at $249 per person leaving from Playa del Carmen and charges $294 from Tulum, Puerto Aventuras or Cancún, a $45 gap for the pickup. Its Cozumel combination, a reef day plus the sharks, runs $429 from Playa and $459 from Tulum. Those prices hold whatever the group size. 6

How the day runs, and what to add to the bill
A shark trip takes half a day, and the shop picks which half. Phantom Divers checks divers in from 8:30 a.m. for the no bait Discovery dive and from 1:30 p.m. for the feeding Encounter. Scuba Adventours leaves at 7:00 a.m. and has you back four hours later. Koox Diving runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Xico Dive Center puts its feeding dive at two and a half to three hours. 3, 2, 6, 1
| Line | MXN | USD at 17.2454 |
|---|---|---|
| Bull Shark Encounter, 1 dive | 3,560 | $206 |
| Rental equipment | 440 | $26 |
| Prime photography spot, one per dive | 3,340 | $194 |
| Dive and gear, without the photo spot | 4,000 | $232 |
Add the photography spot and the same day reaches 7,340 MXN, about $426. Conversions use the Federal Reserve H.10 rate of 17.2454 pesos per dollar for 18 September 2026. Phantom Divers says its reef and water activity conservation fee, in force since 1 January 2020 by the shop's own account, already sits inside the listed price.
Refund terms split by format. Phantom Divers gives no refund on the Discovery dive when the sharks stay away, and a partial refund on the feeding Encounter. Scuba Adventours reschedules a closed port day at no cost and returns the deposit when nothing fits your stay. Ask which rule applies before you pay that deposit, 1,050 MXN, shown by the shop as $62. 3, 2
Where the shark dive fits in a Riviera Maya trip
Winter is the reason to slot this in. The shark window opens as high season fills Fifth Avenue, and those five months are the steadiest on the rest of the coast. One morning on the sand flat leaves the afternoon loose, and every boat on this page is back by 3 p.m. at the latest. 6, 3
- Base yourself in town. The Playa del Carmen guide covers the beaches, the Cozumel ferry and where the al pastor line forms at El Fogón.
- Pair it with Cozumel. Koox Diving sells a Cozumel reef day plus the shark dive for $429 from Playa, and the Cozumel diving budget prices the island on its own terms. 6
- Check the water before you commit a week. Sargassum runs on a different calendar from the sharks, and the sargassum season page has the month by month reports.
- Budget the state's paperwork. Quintana Roo charges visitors a tourist fee; the VISITAX page has the price and how to pay, and the Mexico guide covers entry.
Many cenotes inland are run by the community that owns the land, an ejido or a Maya cooperative, and the price at the gate is theirs to set. The Maya are a contemporary people across this peninsula, with their own governments and their own rules for visitors. Ask at the entrance who runs the site, and pay them directly.
What happens if a dive goes wrong?
Two phone numbers belong in your phone before you board. The SSS recompression chamber sits in Playa del Carmen itself, on 10th Avenue North between 26th and 28th Street North, with a 24 hour diving emergency line. Divers Alert Network staffs its own hotline 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and takes collect calls. 7, 8
Dive insurance sits outside every price on this page. The conservation money is murkier. Phantom Divers says every visitor to water activities on the Playa del Carmen reefs has owed a marine park conservation payment since 1 January 2020, and that its own listed prices include it. It names no collecting authority and no peso amount, and the other three shops say nothing about it. Ask yours what its fee covers, and whether your price already has it. 3
Frequently asked questions
When is the best month to dive with bull sharks in Playa del Carmen?
December, January and February, if shark numbers matter most, since Scuba Adventours puts the highest counts there. Pick November or March if you have one morning and need the boat to sail. 2
Are bull shark dives in Playa del Carmen done from a cage?
No cage appears on any of the four shops' pages. The dives happen in the open on a sand flat at 20 to 25 m, either drifting past with no bait in the water or holding one position while a guide feeds. Certification rules and diver screening do the work a cage would. 2, 3, 6
Is the feeding dive worth the extra money?
At Phantom Divers the feeding dive costs 1,380 MXN more than the no bait Discovery trip. At Xico Dive Center it costs 1,000 MXN more. At both, feeding means one dive instead of two: a fixed position and close range, against a second dive and an easier certification bar. 3, 1
What happens if the port closes on my dive day?
The harbour master closes the port, so no shop can promise a sailing during a December cold front. Scuba Adventours' terms are the most specific of the four: 1,050 MXN deposit, shown by the shop as $62, rescheduled inside your stay or refunded. Leave a spare morning in the week. 2
Can an Open Water diver book a bull shark dive?
Yes, on the observation formats. Xico Dive Center takes Open Water divers for both its trips and adds a check dive at 25 logged dives or fewer. Phantom Divers lists Open Water for the no bait Discovery dive. For a feeding dive, plan on Advanced Open Water, or 20 to 25 logged dives. 1, 3, 2
Should I pay in pesos or dollars?
Pesos are what the shops actually charge. Scuba Adventours says its dollar figures are a guide and bills in pesos at an indicative $1 to 16.97 MXN, with your bank applying its own rate on the day. Xico Dive Center prints dollar approximations beside its peso prices. Compare the peso number. 2, 1
Will I definitely see a shark?
No shop promises it. Phantom Divers gives no refund on the Discovery dive when the sharks stay away, and a partial refund on the feeding Encounter. Koox Diving says four to five sharks per dive are common on its unbaited trips. Xico Dive Center states plainly that sightings depend on the day. 3, 6, 1
