Ubud temples: fees, dress code and the water ritual

MORE LIFE. BETTER PLANNED.
The bathing pool and its row of spouts at Pura Tirta Empul, Tampaksiring, Gianyar. Entry to the courtyards costs IDR 75,000; stepping into this water is a separate booking. 1, 2 · Anandajoti · Source · CC BY-SA 4.0

Two temples, one morning, and about USD 7 at the two gates - plus what the water ritual actually costs and what to wear to get in.

THE SHORT VERSION
  • Both temples together cost IDR 125,000 a person, about USD 6.98. Tirta Empul charges a foreign adult 75,000 and Goa Gajah charges 50,000, and Gianyar Regency's own ticket portal prints the same figures the temple and the operators publish. 1, 3, 4
  • The IDR 75,000 ticket at Tirta Empul is a visit-only ticket. It buys the three courtyards and the shrines. Bathing in the holy spring and the guided Melukat ceremony are sold as a separate package. 2
  • A guided Melukat runs IDR 550,000 to 1,485,000 a person, about USD 30.70 to 82.88. The price per head falls by more than half from one traveller to four, at 650,000 each, then climbs at five when the group moves into a van. 5, 4
  • Wear a sarong and a sash, and expect the gate to hand you one. Tirta Empul provides a sarong with the ticket and requires it inside. Goa Gajah gives every visitor a sash at the entrance. 2, 6
  • Go early. Tirta Empul opens at 7 AM, Goa Gajah at 8 AM, and one operator's guided ritual picks guests up at 08:30 to reach the temple by 09:30. 2, 6, 5

Two temples, one morning in Gianyar

Water pours from a row of carved stone spouts into a pool the colour of jade. Moss covers the wall behind them. A stone guardian lies along the rim under a white cloth, and a thatched pavilion catches the light above the far wall. This is Pura Tirta Empul at Tampaksiring, dated to about 962 AD by the histories that record it, and its spring is the head of the Pakerisan River. 7

The other door on this morning is a rock face at Goa Gajah, near Bedulu. Someone cut it into a wide-eyed head with an open mouth, and the way in runs through the mouth. Dutch archaeologists reached the cave in 1923. The bathing pools in front of it stayed under the ground until 1954. 8

Two temples, two small fees, one set of rules to get right. A foreign adult pays IDR 75,000 at Tirta Empul and IDR 50,000 at Goa Gajah, so the pair comes to about USD 6.98 at the September reference rate. The tickets are the small money here. The ritual is where the price moves. 1, 3, 5, 4

What do the Ubud temples cost to enter?

Both gates now have a government price to check against, and the two agree.

Gianyar Regency runs its own ticket portal, and its figures match the ones the sites publish. The portal prices a foreign adult at Tirta Empul at IDR 75,000 and a foreign child at 50,000. It prices Goa Gajah at 50,000 and 25,000. The temple's own page and a named operator's price page carry those same four numbers. 1, 3, 2, 6

Children under 5 go in free at both. Goa Gajah charges Indonesian visitors IDR 30,000 for an adult and 15,000 for a child, asks for a passport at the gate beside the ticket, and takes cash or QRIS; parking there is 5,000 for a car and 2,000 for a motorbike. Tirta Empul's fee has run at this level since 1 January 2025. Converted at Bank Indonesia's JISDOR reference rate of IDR 17,917.00 per US dollar on 25 September 2026. 3, 6, 2, 4

A family of four clears both gates for IDR 400,000, about USD 22.33: two adults and two children aged 5 to 12 pay 250,000 at Tirta Empul and 150,000 at Goa Gajah. Carry small notes for the parking and the offerings. MMT's guide to ATM fees abroad prices the withdrawal itself. 1, 3, 6, 4

What does the Tirta Empul ticket cover?

Three courtyards, one after another. Jaba Pura, Jaba Tengah and Jeroan run from the entrance inward. The middle one holds two pools and 30 showers, grouped under names that include Pengelukatan, Pebersihan, Sudamala and Pancuran Cetik, the poison spout. 7

  • A sarong, handed over with the ticket, and required while you are inside. 2
  • All three courtyards, the shrines, and the terrace above the two bathing pools with their 30 named spouts. 7
  • The spring that feeds the Pakerisan, inside the subak irrigation system UNESCO inscribed in 2012 as one of five components of its Bali property. 7, 9
  • A gate open from 7 AM, which is the hour worth taking. 2

The temple tells its own founding story on its own site. Indra pierced the earth to draw up the water of immortality and revive his troops, after the demon king Mayadenawa poisoned the water around them. That is the account the temple gives. The poison spout in the middle courtyard carries the same story forward. 10, 7

A rest villa built on the hill above the spring for President Sukarno's visit in 1954 still stands, and works today as a guest house. The temple below it is a working one, kept by the customary village around it. 7

How does the Tirta Empul purification work?

One named operator publishes a full rate card for the guided ritual, by group size.

A guided Melukat is a booking, and the price per head depends on how many of you there are. Bali Midori sells the ritual with the entrance ticket inside it and publishes a rate for every group size. Solo, it is IDR 1,485,000. In a group of eleven to thirteen it is 550,000 each. Booking closes 24 hours ahead. 5

  1. 08:30, pickup at the hotel

The operator's sample day opens with a hotel pickup. Bring swimwear, a change of clothes, sandals and cash for offerings. 5

  2. 09:30, arrive at the temple

Tirta Empul is about an hour from Ubud by the operator's own reckoning. The gate itself opens at 7 AM. 5, 2

  3. 10:00, the briefing

A guiding master runs it. The offerings, the sarong and the scarf are already inside the price you paid. 5

  4. 11:00, the ritual

The bathing itself, at the spouts in the middle courtyard. 5

  5. 12:00, a blessing, then the road back

The itinerary sets aside an hour for a temple blessing, then returns at 13:00. 5

Hours differ between the two pages, so plan around the earlier close. The temple's own site gives 7 AM to 6 PM. The operator's page gives 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For a late arrival, treat 5 PM as the last hour that is certain. 2, 5

Goa Gajah ticket: the mouth, the cave and the pools

IDR 50,000 buys the whole site, and the cave is the smallest part of it. Steps drop from the booth to a courtyard. The rock face at the bottom is dense with carved figures around one wide-eyed head, and the doorway runs straight through its open mouth into a small, dark interior. 3, 8

The bathing pools in front of the cave came later to us than the cave did. Archaeologists worked the site from 1923; the fountains and the pool waited until 1954 to be dug out. Seven statues of women holding water pitchers stand along them, for seven holy rivers of India. An earthquake took one of the seven. 8

The carving here holds two traditions at once: a lingam and yoni and a statue of Ganesha above ground, stupas and chattra cut into the rock down by the river. Estimates put the sanctuary somewhere in the 9th to 11th century. 8

The practical shape of a visit: the gate opens at 8 AM and closes at 6 PM, and the site has parking, toilets and food stalls. The operator page that checked these prices with site management recommends a morning for the quiet, and names May and June, then September and October, as the calmest windows inside an April to October dry season. 6

Temple etiquette in Bali: what to wear at the gate

A sarong and a sash, and each temple hands you one of the two. Tirta Empul provides a sarong with the ticket and requires it inside. Goa Gajah's operator page, updated three days before this research, says a sash is given free at the entrance to tie around the waist. At Uluwatu, at the other end of the island, the temple's own site says the same about a sarong and sash. 2, 6, 11

The rules are the temples' own, and the province has written them down as well. Gianyar Regency's tourism portal sets out the Bali Governor's Circular Letter No. 4 of 2023 on foreign visitors: modest, proper attire in sacred areas, and the inner and middle sanctified zones of a temple, the utamaning mandala and the madyaning mandala, kept for worship in traditional Balinese dress. 12

  • Sarong and sash on before you pass the gate. Tirta Empul provides the sarong, Goa Gajah the sash; bring or buy the other if you want both. 2, 6
  • Dress modestly above the waist too. A sarong covers the lower body, and Uluwatu's own guidance asks for modest clothing beyond it. 11
  • Stay clear of the inner and middle courtyards unless you are there to worship in traditional Balinese dress. That is the provincial rule, quoted by the regency. 12
  • Pay in rupiah or by QRIS, carry your passport, and use licensed guides at the sites. All three sit on the circular's own list, and Goa Gajah asks for the passport at the gate. 12, 3
  • Give way to a ceremony in progress. Honouring the sanctity of temples and respecting ceremonies head the province's list of things to do. 12

One dress-code detail sits unresolved. The operator page updated on 23 September 2026 says every visitor at Goa Gajah is given a sash. An older encyclopedia entry says a sarong goes to visitors wearing shorts. Wear long, loose clothes and take whatever the booth hands you. 6, 8

Which temple should you pick with one morning?

Take Tirta Empul for the water and Goa Gajah for the carving. Tirta Empul is the World Heritage one, and the only one of the two selling a guided ritual. Goa Gajah is the shorter stop: a staircase, a courtyard, a mouth in the rock, and pools that lay buried until 1954. 9, 5, 8

Budget a driver for the pair. The operator that sells the ritual puts Tirta Empul about an hour from Ubud and folds the transport into its package. No published page gives a drive time to Goa Gajah, so ask your driver for the run between the two. MMT's Indonesia travel guide covers the arrival side of the trip. 5

If the temple morning is bolted onto a beach week, the Kuta page prices a night in the south. For the rest of a longer stay, MMT prices a shore-diving base at Amed and a working month in Canggu.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Tirta Empul entrance fee?

IDR 75,000 for a foreign adult and IDR 50,000 for a child aged 5 to 12, with under-5s free. The fee has run at that level since 1 January 2025 and was unchanged when the page was read again on 26 September 2026. Gianyar Regency's own ticket portal prints the same two figures. About USD 4.19 at the 17,917 reference rate. 2, 1, 4

Can I bathe in the holy spring on a standard ticket?

No. Bathing is a separate booking that starts at IDR 550,000 a person in a group of eleven to thirteen and runs to 1,485,000 solo, entrance ticket included. 2, 5

What is the Goa Gajah ticket price?

IDR 50,000 for a foreign adult and 25,000 for a foreign child on Gianyar Regency's portal, matched by a tour operator's price page that last checked with site management on 27 December 2025. Indonesian visitors pay 30,000 and 15,000. Cash or QRIS at the booth, passport at the gate, parking 5,000 for a car. 3, 6

What should I wear to a Balinese temple?

A sarong and a sash, over modest clothes. Tirta Empul hands you a sarong with the ticket and requires it. Goa Gajah gives every visitor a sash at the entrance. Uluwatu provides both free with its ticket. Long, loose clothing above the waist finishes the job, since a sarong covers the lower body only. 2, 6, 11

Are there rules about menstruation at Bali's temples?

Yes. Tirta Empul posts the rule on its own page, and it holds across Balinese Hindu temples; the sanctified inner and middle courtyards are the part it applies to. 2, 6, 11, 12

What time do the two temples open?

Tirta Empul at 7 AM and Goa Gajah at 8 AM, both closing at 6 PM on the pages read on 26 September 2026. One operator's page gives Tirta Empul a 5 PM close, so treat that as the safe limit for a late arrival. A guided ritual on that operator's sample day picks up at 08:30 and reaches the temple at 09:30. 2, 6, 5

Is Goa Gajah a UNESCO World Heritage site?

No. UNESCO's 2012 Bali subak inscription lists five components, and Goa Gajah is absent from them, while Tirta Empul sits inside the Pakerisan watershed component. Goa Gajah went onto the tentative list on 19 October 1995 and came off in 2015 along with eleven other Indonesian sites. 9, 8

Do I need cash at the temples?

Bring some. Goa Gajah's page lists cash or QRIS and prices parking at IDR 5,000 for a car and 2,000 for a motorbike, so small notes help. The operator selling the Melukat asks guests to bring cash for offerings on top of the package price. 6, 5
